The next person who publishes a paper with massive, important, indecipherable, and unreferenced assumptions: I will steal the coffee machine in your lab.

@David cool, I like the plan :) I read most of the chat session, but I found something missing: have the SE folks addressed the need for a temporary [TP] and [astro] tag for retagging purposes? We do not want to just copy over the existing tags, we already have tag bloat. And [untagged] is plain annoying. We can remove the temptags as we retag a question.
Also: will there be any way to do the retagging without flooding the main page? Or should we just forget about our main page for a few days? (tell everyone to sort by newest if they want to skip the retagged ones) It seems that the actual merge shall be silent, but the retagging should be as well.
I really don't like the idea of doing a five-posts-a-day retag format :/

7:46 AM
@Manishearth Grace Note said that they will be able to transfer all questions over without flooding the main page (which happens with regular migrations too), and they may be able to add a tag to all migrated questions. But there is still no support for retagging without bumping the question.

8:20 AM
@David so we should just go on a reckless retagging spree? Or do you have any other ideas? :/

8:30 AM
As things stand now, we'll have to fix tags manually.
I can ask about getting the temporary ability to retag questions without bumping them, but the answer will probably be "no," and in any case the amount of work that will be involved will be a lot no matter what we do.

@David yeah, that's gonna be a no--I think I already asked Shog for it. Oh well :/

Just had an idea for an Astro chatroom name-- "Cygnus A" ^.^ Too bad they're going bonk in a few days :/

12:43 PM
Heads up: I've tagged all the site merger meta questions as so that we can find them easily.
Bit early, but I thought that there's no harm in asking this as well:

Q: Change name/faq to Physics&Astro?

Manishearth Related: If it's possible, do we want to expand the scope of this site to include astronomy? Related chat : http://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/71/conversation/site-merging-chat-event It seems that we have decided to take all Astro questions, including observational astro (though we...

Maybe we could have four poll-type answers: Change name, dont change name, change faq, dont change faq ;-)
I decided to ask it now rather than later since we have quite a bit of meta-activity due to the merger atm, once the merger is finished then our meta will probably revert to its ghost town state :(
@Grace (extremely late arrival--out of town at the time of the event) What is SE doing about this? :

Q: Keeping links to the closed sites

Piotr MigdalIs there any way to keep links from the closed sites, so they can redirect to the migrated questions? See here for the migration of the recently-closed sites. The problem is with links on external sites, so not to have them pointing to a dead site. When it comes to theoreticalphysics.SE, we us...

@Manishearth We've actually already been talking with ArXiv about this in an email exchange. We're working to get that all wrapped up

2:08 PM
@Grace I'm not talking about ArXiv (though that's another important point).. I'm talking about normal links. For example, astronomy.se/questions/1337/why-do-stars-appear-colored should redirect to physics.se/questions/133742/why-do-stars-appear-colored or something of the sort. All migration redirects should work this way, not just migrations caused by the salvation.
hunts for real example
So don't kill the domain name and all, and keep a bare-bones redirect system in place.

Q: How are merges with other SEs executed?

WarrickThere's currently a lot of talk about Physics.SE absorbing ThPhys.SE and Astro.SE. How is this carried out? Who decides, and where, on what policy is to be executed? Once it's decided, where, how and when is it carried out? Is there a top-down decision or is there a "suggestions box" of some so...

We'll also be working on that internally, I imagine, since we have to clean up our own links internally

3:28 PM
@Grace thanks! Could you post an official "yes" out there or should I do it?
(linking to your above message of course)

I'll post

@Grace great, thanks!

A: Keeping links to the closed sites

Grace NoteOn the topic of ArXiv specifically - we (well, Geoff Dalgas, specifically) have already contacted the people at ArXiv about this, and gotten a positive response. We will be working together with them to handle all of the link fixes there. Additionally, we'll be temporarily supporting redirects f...

@Grace hmm, I don't like the 6months thingy, but it's practical...
So i support it :)
(was rather concerned about the lack of response on that question)

Well, if there's still tons of traffic to the links, it'll last for longer than 6 months

/me secretly prepares a script that will keep up traffic

Q: What do you need to know about the upcoming mass migration?

David ZaslavskyIf you're reading this, you've probably heard that the Theoretical Physics and Astronomy sites, among others, will be shutting down this week. Since these two sites have a large overlap in scope with Physics, we are going to be "adopting" the entire content of both TP and Astro. Over the past wee...

it's rather quiet for having 7 people in here
I will be off but anyone who has last-minute comments about the migration, leave them here
