12:00 AM
The moment she starts singing, I have to pause lol

I see, interesting

Did you like Ulver's non-metal stuff?

I am about a quarter through Shadows of The Sun. I like it so far!

:) It's good stuff
'Ulver' means wolves in Norwegian. They're a Norwegian band too

yeah
there's a crapload of norwegian slash swedish slash dutch metal bands man
metal of various flavors

12:10 AM
haha yeah. French too, actually. They had/have a very experimental group of black metal bands. Their tricks are now being followed by others (like Iceland, USA)
Oh I have a cute French band. Non-metal. See if you like it

Oh speaking of, I was meaning to ask you if you like Deafheaven

I did, a bit, back when I was a bit into their genre (blackgaze)
Do you like them?

I haven't listened to much
I have Sunbather on my list

Hm, I don't really recall how that (or any of their) album sounded like. Before that, maybe you should look at Alcest
The frontrunners in blackgaze

Gotcha

12:14 AM
Last night dream is very intense: It is a world where New York and the rest of the northern hemisphere is only a few km away from australia. Mutually Assured Destruction has started by Kim Jong Un as the first nuclear missile (red casting, two sectioned) was fired into New York, with the US retalitated as nuclear missiles were fired to prescribed locations. Behind our house in australia is the nigeria falls.
Eventually it was hit by a nuclear missile and the expanding pyroclastic flow from the explosion roast us alive
The scene is then repeated 3 more times starting with me waking up from my house, and I only woke up slowly after I and my family were being roasted the 3rd time

@Avantgarde lol french
can't understand that shit

Oh sure :P
This is the Alcest song you need
No black metal or shrieks. Just clean vocals.
with a really nice atmosphere

Listening.
I like atmospheric metal

and yes they're French too
Sung in French though!
@Secret what a dream

Language is mostly secondary to me if I'm listening to metal

12:19 AM
:P No growling/shrieking here, however

Yeah I can see that
I sonically quite like this
and i'm like 3 minutes in

@Avantgarde (I hate French pronunciations though. Thick accent or nothing, comrade)

@BalarkaSen I know nothing about it anyway.

me neither!

12:24 AM
Comrade? Communism <3

i was making a commie joke

oh no
are we ironically or unironically loving communism

lol that Dawkins bit

Marx debunked Dawkins years ago

@BalarkaSen If I know that $Z(t)= \sum_{j\ge 1}\exp(-a_j t)$ for $t>0$, don't know what the $a_j$'s are, but I do know $Z(j)$, how can I extract them?

@0ßelö7 Is the bold "Discuss $\kappa \leq 0$" on page 15 supposed to be there or is it a note to yourself?

@ACuriousMind note to myself.
I don't know if I want to talk about $\kappa\le 0$ because that's noncompact

@0ßelö7 vOv

1:05 AM
@ACuriousMind Do you run Firefox nightly?

@BernardoMeurer No

@ACuriousMind What's your main browser?

Firefox

Stable?
(55 ?)

Yup, any reason I should use nightly?

1:07 AM
Yeah, Nightly is currently on 57, which implements their new design and, most importantly, all their new technology
It is MUCH faster, more responsive, and lowers memory usage
I used Stable, moved to Beta a little while ago, and then to Nightly now and it's amazing

I have enough memory, but speed does sound tempting. Any known downsides?

>lower memory usage
just download more RAM

@ACuriousMind So far no issues whatsoever. I have over 40 tabs open, and playing video, and it all works well
CPU usage is drastically lower too
The new looks are awesome
Firefox Nightly, uBlock, Privacy Badger, Smart HTTPS = Perfection

@BernardoMeurer I have 80 tabs open in Chrome
I have 10 videos playing
why would I use anything else?

@0ßelö7 Because in Firefox that won't destroy your computer
You're always out of memory

1:15 AM
I have plenty left

lol, 14 GB used

6.48 GB of used SWAP
Holy fuck

what is wrong with that
I have an SSD

Swap is SLOW

1:17 AM
it seems pretty fast to me

Try Firefox Nightly out
Give it a shot

@BernardoMeurer does it sync my chrome bookmarks?

I have Firefox on my phone too with Firefox Sync and it works really well
Yeah, when you install you can import your bookmarks

I don't like the Firefox UI
did they fix it?

Yes, on 57

1:19 AM
@ACuriousMind So I take it you don't have any more comments?

Nightly has the new UI

Wait, astronomy is defined as the study of the universe beyond Earth, right?

oh not this again

@0ßelö7 Just bear with me

@0ßelö7 Nope (I have to admit I only glossed over all the formulae, though)

1:20 AM
So why do some people not consider cosmology a branch of astronomy again?

@ACuriousMind The formulae aren't really important except for the one with the Euler characteristic. Did you think that theorem was neat?
@SirCumference Because one is better than the other.

@0ßelö7 Yeah I agree, but still

@SirCumference Oh, then why are you trying to be an astronomer?

@0ßelö7 Well, I consider cosmologists to be astronomers...

So you are trying to do cosmology?

1:22 AM
Probably that or stellar astrophysics.

what other astrophysics is there

@SirCumference Because they want cosmology to be distinct from investigation of individual stars or stellar formation. Don't obsess over such categories - they are arbitrary lines drawn in the sand to begin with.

@0ßelö7 Er, planetary, galactic, etc.
@ACuriousMind Astronomy isn't merely about stars :P

vzn
@mathvc_ try this one or drop by other chat room for more suggestions (have more recent refs too) amazon.com/Speakable-Unspeakable-Quantum-Mechanics-Philosophy/… chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/9446/theory-salon

@SirCumference Guess what? I don't care. :P

1:24 AM
@ACuriousMind D:

Dun Dun DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN

You wanna call cosmology astronomy? Be my guest. You wanna fight to the death to not have cosmology be astronomy? Also fine with me. What does it matter?

@ACuriousMind All I asked was why many people consider it a separate branch...

@JaimeGallego Wait, what about S h o g?
@SirCumference who cares

Do physicists discuss metaphysics just like mathematicians discuss metamathematics?

1:26 AM
@0ßelö7 I'm curious enough...

@SirCumference The obvious answer is because they consider it suitably distinct from the rest of astronomy. Again, what does it matter?

@Jasper I know quite a few mathematicians and I've never heard any of them say that phrase.

Physicists often like to avoid discussing metaphysics

@ACuriousMind Jeez louise, it was a simple curiosity

@0ßelö7 Hmm OK, to me Buddhism is sort of like metaphysics. =D

1:28 AM
I think 99% of mathematicians dislike set theory
3
why did that get 2 stars?

@0ßelö7 I think maybe they dislike logic more than set theory.

@Jasper You realize that "metaphysics" has an established meaning that is not like what metamathematics means in relation to mathematics, right?

@ACuriousMind Yeah, maybe. I came here to find out more from great minds like you. =D

@Jasper Buddhism - like most religions - is metaphysics, at least in the parts where it makes claims about the fundamental nature of reality.

Oh come on ACM
let's not

1:30 AM
Hmm OK. Interestingly, Buddha did talk about universe expansion and contraction centuries ago.

@Jasper What I mean is that "metamathematics" means, very broadly, "reasoning about systems of mathematics". But "metaphysics" does not mean "reasoning about systems of physics"

@Jasper I don't think we even know about logic
What is there to logic beyond positive/negative/contrapositive, etc.
I don't want to know!
But I know there's a horrible world of set theory and Jech's 700 page book is their Satanic bible

Instead, "metaphysics" usually denotes asking (and answering) questions which more or less by definition are impossible to answer through physics alone, or which make no sense at all within the framework of physics

@0ßelö7 Before you study that book you need another one to bridge the gap.

I will never study that book
I see absolutely no reason
I dislike set theory more than physics

1:33 AM
@Avantgarde Yes I saw that video on the French R as well.

I am literally shaking right now I hate set theory so much

Metaphysics is one branch of phhilosophy. It concerns questions related to the nature of concepts, knowledge, and reality
They are all incredibly hard to give a satisfactory answer, and beyond the reach of most physics

@ACuriousMind Where would I see an equation like $\Delta u+hg=u^{p-1}$ in physics?
people call it a nonlinear schroedinger equation for some reason

Never seen that. Have you googled "nonlinear Schrödinger equation"? :P

@0ßelö7 I would think that the five major branches of logic are proof theory, model theory, set theory, computability theory, and axiomatic number theory.

1:39 AM
In theoretical physics, the (one-dimensional) nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is a nonlinear variation of the Schrödinger equation. It is a classical field equation whose principal applications are to the propagation of light in nonlinear optical fibers and planar waveguides and to Bose-Einstein condensates confined to highly anisotropic cigar-shaped traps, in the mean-field regime. Additionally, the equation appears in the studies of small-amplitude gravity waves on the surface of deep inviscid (zero-viscosity) water; the Langmuir waves in hot plasmas; the propagation of plane-diffracted...
huh
@ACuriousMind you're a genie

@0ßelö7 You look more like the genie in your green suit. =D

nonlinear optics, ew

@0ßelö7 I don't live in a lamp nor do I fulfill wishes

@ACuriousMind is that not the word for genius in your language

It is
But since you didn't capitalize it I didn't think you meant the German word :P

1:43 AM
Esoterics and most things related to woo are often focused on the nature of reality portion of metaphysics,. However there is basically no way to tell whether they are correct because they are not testable (e.g. the notions of reality in buddhism and kabbalah) or does not even make sense (most woo)

@Secret What is woo???

Pretty much another name for pseudoscience

WTF LOL

I am ok with coexisting with pseudoscience as long people knows it is pseudoscience not science

It seems to me that mostly nonscientists talk about pseudoscience, so I don't really listen to them because they don't know what they are talking. =D

1:46 AM
While I am a chemist, my mind is a superposition of many areas of knowledge
or I know a llllitttle bit of everything

What's up with the starring, people?

Sorry, it's just me. I star everything I find funny. =D
But at least the starred things here are not as bad as those that are starred in the math room. =D

@Jasper That tends to flood the starboard rather quickly here, we're a witty bunch :P

Esoterics is an interesting thing in its own rights as long it is not conflated with science. Like poety and other things, it provides you a mindset for extremely creative ideas that a purely structural mindset is hard to provide.
Whereas religion gives meaning to things, and a sense of peace

@BernardoMeurer Wait...you can't even legally drink over there yet, right?

1:58 AM
@ACuriousMind correct

@BernardoMeurer What do you use to block ads etc on nightly? NoScript is not compatible and AdBlock is claimed to be a corrupted file.
Also, Vimperator isn't compatible either. :/

@ACuriousMind what are you talking about

@0ßelö7 I'm trying the nightly build of Firefox as he recommended, but it seems many extensions are not compatible with their new structure

2:16 AM
@ACuriousMind Any idea what the "boundary renormalization group equation" is

@0ßelö7 nope, sorry

@ACuriousMind Why do string theory papers seem like walls of text with random equations mixed in

what is string theory anyway

algebraic geometry masquerading as physics
@ACuriousMind apparently certain curvature flows I'm interested in have applications in string theory

@0ßelö7 Because that's sometimes what they are :P
@0ßelö7 Sometimes it seems everything has an application there

2:23 AM
@ACuriousMind You know that phenomenon they use to track people forging books? The frequency of 1s as the first number?

@0ßelö7 Zipf's law, yes

@ACuriousMind I get the same feeling from string theory papers. They're math, just...off somehow.
Like someone trying to fake math :P
@ACuriousMind Ah, the reason is that RG flow is just Ricci flow for strings, and MCF is just Ricci flow for hypersurfaces. So if you're looking at "boundaries" which are hypersurfaces, RG flow becomes MCF.
But I would imagine the math is completely different because RG flow should be on a Lorentzian manifold.

If I knew anything about RG flow that might make sense :P

@ACuriousMind When I got to RG flow in Zee I knew I wasn't cut out to be a physicist. Too much math.

Let $X = \bigcup_{n \in \Bbb{N}}X_n$, where $X_n$ is defined as the span of the nth set of hamel basis $\{x_n\}$ of $V$. Since by BCT $X \subset V$, where $V$ is a normed space, is there a name for the space $V-X$?
One thing I am interested is how going from countable to uncountable will allow the span to reach $V-X$

2:32 AM
BCT?

Baire Category theorem

2:49 AM
@ACuriousMind I use uBlock
it's really resource efficient
uBlock, Privacy Badger and Smart HTTPS is my combo
You use vim bindings on your browser?

ACM is literally a robot
he links his browser to his mind

@BernardoMeurer I'm not running this on a potato :P
@BernardoMeurer Yes, I've grown used to it

@ACuriousMind Performance and efficiency is about saving energy :P

@ACuriousMind don't you only have a 660?

@0ßelö7 If my adblocker uses my GPU, something is wrong.

2:54 AM
Lol

hmm

3:36 AM
@BernardoMeurer Smart HTTPS? Is that any better than HTTPS Everywhere?

It's the same, but the extension is Firefox 57 compatible
i.e. it's newer

HTTPS Everywhere hasn't been updated in ages

Should it be? I thought it already did its job

The three mushroom clouds seen in last night dream

3:48 AM
@Secret Honest question, what is the secret that your name refers to?

@SirCumference That question kinda answers itself
2
:P
@Avantgarde There's a fairly recent post-rock album "In Silence We Yearn" out there which seems to be pretty good. You might like it; I can't tell if there's sonically anything new happening as I don't know the post-rock genre, but I definitely like it.

@SirCumference Well, the name is the reflection that I like to learn about secrets of many things

user228700
4:26 AM
@Sir: Hey! :-) Are you around?

@Kaumudi.H Yep :)
How're things?

user228700
Things are A-OK :-)

user228700
And for you?

Got a cold, but otherwise things are good

user228700
Ah :-( I hope you get well soon! How are your profs. this semester?

4:29 AM
@Kaumudi.H Pretty good, though some are a bit fast. Yours?

user228700
Ohh. Mine are just OK; none of us are expected to come to depend on any of them so they swagger into class and do their thing, for the sake of doing the thing, y'know?

user228700
I Googled that and it seems highly dubious a method to employ in some subjects :-/ That sucks, man.

(removed since some people here are profs, don't wanna insult em)

user228700
That, erm, OK, I see.

user228700
Say, what's ur campus like?

4:35 AM
Actually I realized that made no sense to do.
Dear lord I need sleep

user228700
@SirCumference x'D Yes, exactly.

user228700
@SirCumference Is your sleep schedule effed up, still?

@Kaumudi.H Pretty small actually. Food here is meh, and every building looks the same, but otherwise it's kinda pretty
@Kaumudi.H Yeah. I haven't gotten more than 3 hours of sleep (per night) for the last few days
At this point I'm just gonna go to a doctor

user228700
Wtf, man...

@SirCumference @Kaumudi.H The variant of inquiry-based learning one encounters in math and related subjects is called the Moore method
@SirCumference Very good decision

user228700
4:37 AM
@ACuriousMind I see, thanks!

user228700
@SirCumference Oh, buildingS, in plural! This instantly make it a far better campus than mine! :-P

@Kaumudi.H ...your university is a single building? oO

user228700
@ACuriousMind I'm afraid so. A 5-storey building. My "campus" does have a stationery shop, a canteen and a few bakeries outside the entrance but it's not closed off, the area.

user228700
@SirCumference Is it that you are unable to fall asleep or that you're doing other things in that time?

@Kaumudi.H Wait, so are there dorms?
@Kaumudi.H The former. I've been trying to keep a good sleep schedule and balancing my work, so ideally I should have 8 hours a night to sleep.
But the more I try, the less I can actually fall asleep.

4:41 AM
@Kaumudi.H Is that a giant building or do you just have very few students?

user228700
@SirCumference Ah, yes, there is another building, the men's hostel, situated directly behind the main one but there is no hostel for women run by the institution (govt.); I live at a branch of the YMCA a few hundred meters away from the main building.

user228700
@ACuriousMind We have around 1500 students-would that be very few? :-P

user228700
@SirCumference Oh, man :-( OK, yes, do visit the doctor.

@Kaumudi.H My freshman class is ~3,000...

@Kaumudi.H Yes, I would consider that very few, Heidelberg has 30000 :P

4:44 AM
@ACuriousMind Sigh, checked your profile

user228700
Haha, yes, we don't have very many students at all, then, as compared to standards :-P

@SirCumference I guess that's at least closer to the truth than me being an industrial physicist :P

user228700
x'D

@ACuriousMind Dear lord, my memory is concerning :/

user228700
@SirCumference Dude, get that doctor's appointment.

4:45 AM
@ACuriousMind how are you still up
or did you already sleep

@Kaumudi.H I'll have to wait until Monday

user228700
@ACu: Oh, my God, is this really a building inside your campus:

user228700

user228700
?

@Kaumudi.H THAT'S SO PRETTY

user228700
4:47 AM
@SirCumference None of them are working during the weekend? Wtf?

user228700
@SirCumference Exactly!

God I'm used to flat red brick walls

user228700
This is my "campus":

@0ßelö7 I woke up yesterday at 4pm, trying to normalize my sleep schedule :P

user228700

4:48 AM
@ACuriousMind you have a job or something?

@Kaumudi.H That seems to be the university library

user228700
Wow.

is it a long building?
our library has 7 stories
not very nice looking

It's not "on campus" though, the old university buildings are scattered all throughout the old town

@Kaumudi.H that looks like a hospital

user228700
4:49 AM
:'-( Our library is inside the building pictured above.

Consider a zero potential energy level above the earth. Which object has greater potential energy- the one with $-mgh$ or the one with $+mgh$ potential energy? It's not from a book, it's my question. (i.e. the one at a height $h$ below the reference level or the one at a height $h$ above the reference level)

user228700
@ACuriousMind Oh, wow.

@ACuriousMind I have math paralysis, what should I do

user228700
GAH.

The prettiest campus I've ever seen was UC Berkeley

4:52 AM
@SirCumference communist [redcated]

@0ßelö7 Play a vidya game

This picture covers a small portion of the campus

user228700
@ACuriousMind I understand what you meant but I think you should know that Vidya is a common name hereabouts :-P

Vidyā or Vidhya means "correct knowledge" or "clarity" in several South Asian languages such as Sanskrit, Pali & Sinhala. Vidyā is also a popular Indian unisex given name. The Indonesian transliteration of the name is Widya. In Hinduism, it is frequently used as an honorific implying the Puranic conception of knowledge and learning. The opposite of vidyā is avidyā (ignorance or misinformation). Vidya is an epithet of the Hindu goddess Sarasvati, consort of Brahma (according to Hindu beliefs). She has superior spiritual feminine energy—the Param Prakriti—which purifies, empowers, and uplifts the...

@Abcd What do you think? When you say "greater", why is it not obvious that the one with the larger value has the, well, larger potential energy? Is this a trick question?

4:54 AM
@ACuriousMind there is something seriously wrong

@Kaumudi.H I'm sure many Vidyas will also be happy if you play with them

@0ßelö7 I've figured it out. The marching and whatever was some joke/meme among the freshman class

@Kaumudi.H responded to a message of yours that I cannot see

What.

IT JUST REFRESHED
are you controlling my computer

4:55 AM
Yes.
2

@ACuriousMind But why does the one with larger value have larger potential energy? No, it's not a trick question.

@ACuriousMind Robot hackers

@ACuriousMind I am watching netflix, which is probably a part of the issue

Or perhaps ACM is really 0celo's computer

@SirCumference Nah, just a feature you get at 50k SE reputation :P

4:55 AM
and for some reason I can't prove the divergence theorem, gah

@SirCumference Yes, I made him build a gaming machine so I could think faster

@Kaumudi.H So, how's the rest? Food, students, etc.?

@Abcd I don't understand. When you're asking which energy is larger, the positive number is obviously larger than the negative number - that's how positive and negative numbers work, right? What's the issue?

only using 9GB

@ACuriousMind Is it possible to relate this result to work done/required
