12:00 AM
I just discovered that the Chinese shop across from my office offers Szechuan style roasted peanuts, a personal favorite the unavailability of which has plagued me for years.

@DanielSank Not really. I'm losing weight :P

@Danu I should do that.

Go for it!

@Danu I could stand to lose ten pounds.

I'm losing a lot more. I think I'm already down like 13.

12:03 AM
@Danu Goodness. Good for you.

Peanuts be hard to resist :P

I think my healthiest weight would be 170 lbs.

Hmkay. I'm going a little below that :)

I'm tall.
6'

I'm 5' 7 or 8

12:07 AM
you are pretty tall dan

Dan is not very clear when both of us have a name starting with that :P But I guess you're talking to DanielSank.

@Skyler Yep, gotta be to store all that Smash Bros. kick-ass.
@Danu There's also the fact that skyler and I know each other irl...

Did not know.
Did you bring Skyler to PSE or did you meet online first?

@DanielSank Woah

@Danu Met here, realized we were in the same town, played Smash Bros.
@Skyler I owe you dinner. Don't let me forget :)

12:16 AM
@DanielSank Also, there's an Indonesian version of this that is wildly popular in the Netherlands. It's called "katjang pedis".

@DanielSank this
@DanielSank and ill hold you to it

@Danu katjang pedis is a bit different from the ones I have.

@DanielSank I just went with "spicy peanuts"
Seems like a perfect match :P
The fact that they're covered in dough is probably a bit different.

@Danu yep
Yo, @heather, can't remember if I shared this with you:

tfw when you even see some of those obsvure SW characters nobody else remembers

12:22 AM
@Skyler Who's obscure!?
If you say IG88, I'll fight you.

@DanielSank haha
what i mean is too obscure, more obscure then it should be

What the heck is an IG88?
2

@ACuriousMind FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFuuuuuuuu.............

Indeed

I AM IG-88, GALACTIC BOUNTY HUNTER.
YOU MAY KNOW ME FROM MY FAMOUS APPEARANCE IN THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.
@ACuriousMind I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT A FELLOW AI WOULD KNOW OF ME...

12:30 AM
My HK-47 profile picture would have been perfect for this conversation...

@ACuriousMind Interesting, how are you aware of HK-47 but not IG-88?
Video game?

@DanielSank Aye, HK is a companion NPC in KotoR

@ACuriousMind Haven't played Shadows of the Empire, eh?

Never even heard of it until just now

@ACuriousMind Good game.

12:40 AM
Oh, @0celo7 welcome back

1:01 AM
@Danu I hadn't heard of that result by that name, but it's the contrapositive that's important. Namely a symmetric op with domain = whole space is unbounded
So you have to work with unbounded operators
(I read the wiki article a few hours ago so maybe they said it that way, not sure)
i meant bounded above, actually
It's automatically bounded. So you have to work with densely defined operators.
@SirCumference Hi

@0celo7 Yeah
This is the only result of functional analysis that I (i) understood the proof of (ii) found very interesting

1:21 AM
@Danu I am currently investigating spectral theory in the context of PDE, so I figured I'd read Hall's book on QM as a warm-up
learning some interesting things, like the direct integral

PDE's, sigh...
I pushed super hard to make a seminar on the Atiyah-Singer index theorem happen next semester; now I'm scared of the functional analysis :D

Better learn Fredholm theory
I would like to read Besse's book on the subject, but there's no time

Besse? I only know the book on Einstein Manifolds

Wrong B.
I meant Bleecker
Or however you spell it.

Bleecker? I only know "Gauge theories and variational principles"

1:25 AM
Booss and Bleecker
"Topology and Analysis"
@Danu He has a book on closed geodesics as well that's on my list.

Btw, Besse is not a single person ;)

Sure, M. Berger and other people.
It's easier to call Besse "him."

OK :)

@0celo7 I'm making a list of hard calculus exercises

There is another Berger who does nonlinear functional analysis.

1:28 AM
@0celo7 Is your eye fixed yet?

Translating and typesetting all of the Chub n' Tuck madness

My advisor was supposed to give me one of his books, I have to remind him about it.

I want you to curate it :P
@Danu If you want I'd like your thoughts too :)

@SirCumference No, the doctors want to wait two more weeks until I use it normally.
@BernardoMeurer Long time no see

@0celo7 We talk everyday almost

1:30 AM
@BernardoMeurer I just recently told someone I'm not a big fan of calculus exercises.

@BernardoMeurer You need to find that integral person who used to be on the math chat.

I'm a fan of linear algebra exercises.

How is that even possible?

@Danu I was asking you because you seem to have a keen eye for shitty problems
LA exercises are fun indeed
Also I now use \colon instead of :

1:32 AM
@0celo7 Because linear algebra is fucking awesome man :) I'm really into vector bundles now. And a lot of that comes straight from linear algebra.
@BernardoMeurer I do?!
I'm always an advocate against pathologies

@Danu Can we please keep the language down?

@Danu I'm just guessing
@0celo7 Take a look at the ones already there
I'm dividing limits into I and II, I is easier, II is harder

@0celo7 I'm pretty sure you're trolling me---in either case the use of the word "fuck" has been discussed before. I'm pretty sure that, as long as you do not use directly at a person (like "fuck you" or "you're a fucking moron"), it's not a problem.

II includes things like "apply L'Hopital 8 times in a row to solve"
$\mathcal{FUCK}$

@Danu I'm not trolling. But in my ban notice I'm 99% sure they quoted me saying such words when it was not directed at anybody.
But now that I'm back, I would like to talk to @rob @ACuriousMind @dmckee @Qmechanic @DavidZ

1:34 AM
I'm pretty sure this particular instance of "fucking" was well within the ranges of acceptable behavior. Thanks for the caution though, I guess?

I don't think you will be banned (is that even possible), but it's like drinking around an alcoholic.
I should change my avatar.

If you use the word "fucking" in the above sense "[X] is fucking awesome" (where X is not a potentially offensive thing---something like "linear algebra", maybe?) I'm pretty sure you're going to be okay

@0celo7 You might want to reread that notice, then.

"What the fuck are you talking about. Be precise and clear."

@0celo7 Go check the problems dawg

1:40 AM
@0celo7 What even is that?

@0celo7 Well, you're free to talk :P Do you mean in a private chat?

@ACuriousMind Well, I figured I'd be saltier. So maybe I don't need to talk.
But I actually got a lot done in the past 90 days without this place.
Speaking of, have you read my paper yet?
@SirCumference Nick Valentine.
I'm thinking a nice #MAGA.

@0celo7 Ahh, that slipped my mind, sorry.

Or is that "bringing politics here" :P

@0celo7 Let's noooot get into that :P

1:42 AM
@ACuriousMind I've started part 2, which is about elliptic regularity. I'm having tremendous difficulty actually writing down the formal proofs.
And I realized I have to rework all of part 1 to include manifolds with boundary.

hey hey

Howdy @Slereah
@0celo7 Oh btw, in the time you were gone, Mafia and Obliv left.
Mafia actually deleted his account

@SirCumference My people have been keeping me up to date.
Yes, sad about Mafia. Does anyone have contact info for him?

obe does (I think)
Through skype

@SirCumference Oh, really?

1:45 AM
I have obliv's Skype.
I should hit him up.

Obliv's a girl...

Did I tell you that?

What?
Oct 20 '16 at 1:42, by Obliv
I'm that girl in the picture.

He was trolling you.

1:46 AM
Also, isn't it a cartoon?
@SirCumference Huh? What reason do you have to distrust me?

There's a person in there
@0celo7 You've trolled me so many times

Flagging.

@0celo7 Please don't.

case in point...

Then @SirCumference please don't slander my good name

I lied

i lied

@Danu I take it you don't like PDE?

I lied. I'll be playing the new Pokemon games

I lied, it works.

So @0celo7 isn't banned again yet I see

@SirCumference ...quoting yourself quoting 0celo7 lying just makes you seem a bit obsessed with 0celo7 :P

@0celo7 I am open for learning about it actually.
But I don't know anything about it

1:50 AM
@ACuriousMind Nah, I just screwed up the quoting

and I do not like it for its own sake.

Accidentally permalinked myself

It's just that it ends up coming up a lot in stuff I do care about.

Not sure how that seems obsessed though

@Danu Agreed. PDE and FA seem pretty uninteresting on their own.

1:51 AM
So far, I care because of gauge theory
But yeah, I don't know anything

On a side note, @obe do you have Mafia's skype?

Hopefully, after next semester, I will understand PDEs algebraically :P (there's a course on D-modules here, but we didn't make it to actually learning how they encode differential equations this semester)

@Danu I'm currently trying to understand elliptic regularity on manifolds. The problem is that the literature has a bad habit of referencing books that do PDE on $\Bbb R^n$.
Of course, you can say "work in charts," but there's a lot of details swept under the rug in that statement.

Well isn't taht fine?
Errything be local
no?

No, especially when you want regularity on the boundary.

1:53 AM
I have no idea what regularity means.

$C^k$ or whatever.
@Danu $U\subset\Bbb R^n$ open. We all know what $C^k(U)$ means.

Proving that the solutions exist and are $C^k$ for given boundary/initial conditions?

@Danu Consider that the existence of zero modes of the Laplacian is a global property (each zero mode is a harmonic form, hence a distinct cohomology class) and you see that PDEs contain highly non-local information

"regular" is a bullshit math word
it means anything

There's also $C^k(\bar U)$, which means that $f$ is $C^k$ in $U$, but all derivatives are uniformly continuous on $U$ as well.
You need $C^k(\bar U)$ for Stokes' theorem to work.

1:55 AM
Sometimes it's $C^k$, sometimes it's $C^\infty$, sometimes it's analytic

@ACuriousMind I realize that, but topological information is not what 0celo7 was talking about (I think).

@Danu So there's two parts. The first is figuring out if your PDE has any weak solutions. The second part is figuring out if the weak solution is in fact regular.

@Slereah Oh, pregunta

I am not pregnant
3

...
Means "question" in spanish

1:57 AM
A funny thing I recently realized is that the Cauchy-Riemann equations are also a system of PDE's

@Danu One has to quibble with certain things, like the regularity of the boundary of the chart.

@Slereah OK, you like cosmology right?

One needs certain technical conditions to hold so that Sobolev embedding and approximation theorem work.

Not exceedingly
I think you ask me that everytime you ask me a question

@0celo7 Brrr
Sounds like good "black box" material :P

1:58 AM
@Slereah Well you're good with GR

@Slereah I can't recall Sir ever asking a non-cosmology question in recent memory :P

@Danu I was foolish and opened the box.

@ACuriousMind Honestly, it's because it's my shakiest subject

@Danu ...and what insights did that realization bring?

...well, that's a lie, but I'm still kind of shakey on it
