10:00 AM
@JohnRennie Oh, really? Hmm, okay, what dyou guys eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner? (And I mean normal people who include vegetables in their diet -__-)

Some people have dinner around 8 p.m. while others have their meal immediately after work around 5 p.m. The earlier meal is often described as tea.

user228700
Oh, wtf, five? How do they not feel hungry later on?

@Kaumudi.H Don't know.
Personally I eat a big lunch around 3 p.m. then I don't eat again apart from maybe some fruit or other snack.

user228700
No dinner?!?!

user228700
Wow, that's impressive.

10:02 AM
I eat so much for lunch that it takes me until the next morning to feel hungry again.

What kind of weirdo stars a paper on wavefront sets

user228700
@JohnRennie x'D Omg, I see.

The meals that you've posted pictures of would just be a starter for me :-)
But I eat around the usual 2,500 Calories per day. I just eat it in one big meal instead of spreading it out over several meals.

user228700
Ah, I see :-) Hey, when does it start snowing over there? (On a hiatus from studying for a bit, (just today lol :-P) and am very curious to know)

>2,500 Calories per day.
You'll never make it

10:06 AM
@Kaumudi.H It depends where you are in the UK. The city I live in, Chester, is very close to the Atlantic coast so it's warmed by the sea and it hardly ever snows here. In the north of Scotland or in high areas like the Peak District it has already snowed.
In general England doesn't get a lot of snow. In winter the average temperature usually stays slightly above zero.

Same here
Then again I'm basically next to England

@Slereah in La Belle France?

Right next to the channel!

user228700
Oh man, it doesn't snow? Okay. I've never been to a place where it snows :-( Is it truly beautiful and magical and u know...everything?

I could be in Dunkerk in like 30 minutes

10:08 AM
When you're a child snow is just great. When you're middle aged it's just a pain.

user228700
I see...dang it.

I live about half an hours drive from the Welsh hills and it's nice to go walking there in the snow. But that's when I can come home after I've got bored with snow :-)
When it snows in Chester the snow gets trodden into half melted slush and mixed up with dirt from the roads. So it's dirty and wet and generally a pain.

user228700
Man, you have gots to quit bragging! You know what's half an hour (well, depends on the traffic) away from my house?

Well Chester is a lot smaller than Chennai.

10:12 AM
My brother lives in London, and half an hour just takes him to ... more London.

user228700
:-P

user116211
Well, irony, one can say, it's cloudy here with forecast of drizzle; it's chilly too; no sun.

@Kaumudi.H That doesn't sound the sort of river you'd want to go swimming in ...

user228700
> "The river is narrow, placid, slow and meandering. The river is primarily fed by discharge from tank and water bodies and has seen a steady drop in freshwater over the years, a primary reason for its present-day condition."

user228700
> "This has, eventually, made the river, in its 18-km-long stretch in the central district, a stinking cesspool."

10:13 AM
I'm not sure being near the country is a bragging things
Only people who don't live in the country really think the country is nice

user228700
@JohnRennie Exactly!

user228700
@Slereah Yeah, I was wondering about that. Why, tho?

But you wouldn't want to swim in it because it's flipping cold!

user116211
@JohnRennie It's looking the classic Medieval river! Any one will fall in love with it.

10:14 AM
The grass is always greener etc

user228700
@JohnRennie: Chester can be classified as "country"?

I wouldn't mind living in the country but it's mostly because I never leave my house and I hate people

user116211
@Slereah huh!

Living in the city is a pretty noisy mess
I'm right next to a university

@Kaumudi.H Chester is a market town.

10:16 AM
Those fucks wake me up at 4 AM

user116211
@Slereah WTH ;/

not to mention the many sirens

It's not country but it's only five miles from edge to edge so the country is a few minutes drive away.

user116211
You should file a complaint.

user228700
@JohnRennie Okay. So do you ever get tired of...just, too much nature?

10:18 AM
It's a university, what can I do
There's a neverending supply of young people

@Kaumudi.H I grew up in a tiny village in the country called Wookey Hole. It's great when you're a child, but when you get to your late teens it suddenly dawns on you that there's absolutely nothing to do.

user116211
@JohnRennie Sounds thrilling.

For anything interesting you have to go 20 miles to the nearest big cities like Bath or Bristol, and there are no buses in the evening. So if you don't drive you're stuck.

user116211
English city/town names are friggin' awesome.

Or you WALK
Lazy youth

10:20 AM
@Slereah 20 miles?

user228700
Omg, that place looks so so beautiful! :'-)

user228700
(Yeah, I need to go places after these friggin' exams!)

@Kaumudi.H it's great if you're a child or a pensioner. It's rubbish for anyone in between.

user228700
But of course, yes, the "there's nothing to do" thing can definitely get annoying, I guess.

@JohnRennie Barely two days of walk!

user228700
10:22 AM
I go here for my summer vacations...well, used to:

And you need to be a rich pensioner because there are no buses and taxis fares are appallingly high. £15 for a round trip to the nearest town, Wells, which is 1.5 miles away.

user116211
@Slereah Can you? I remember a German WW2 soldier walking all across the Siberia. Horror.

user228700
And I would be done within 2 days. Going from the city to stay in a place like that for two months is paralyzing, to say the least. Well, it used to be amazing when I was smaller and there were a lot more trees to climb...

I don't think the english countryside is like Siberia

10:24 AM
@Kaumudi.H Exactly. When you're a child it's great.

user116211
@Slereah yes, point.

My thesis advisor was from Russia
maybe he would know

user116211
Siberia is a killer frost.

user228700
@JohnRennie I imagine u spent all that time studying so u could go to Cambridge eh? :-P

I hear it is quite chilly

user116211
10:26 AM
indeed

@Kaumudi.H there was nothing else to do! :-)

he just read the ingredients on his toothpaste every day
He had nothing else to read

@Kaumudi.H maybe you should go to Chelakkara to revise :-)

user228700
Say, this place Wookey hole, has it been featured in famous books? I feel like I've heard the name before...

user116211
He played lots of games too and used punch cards, he mentioned earlier.

user228700
10:29 AM
@JohnRennie God, no. I feel like dying when I go there.

user228700
@MAFIA36790 Punch cards?

Maybe you heard it in Star Wars
The Wookie hole

@Kaumudi.H It's a popular tourist destination because there's a large and spectacular cave there. Various TV series have filmed in the cave. There was a Doctor Who episode filmed there. Maybe you're thinking of that.
@Slereah that's a bit below the belt

user228700
@JohnRennie Ohh, I see! Yeah, maybe...

user228700
Omg, what? That cave, wow...

10:32 AM
I spent a summer working as a guide taking tours round the caves.

user116211
@JohnRennie, guess what...

user116211
I got the Elementary Hat!

@MAFIA36790 Cool :-)

user116211
:)

user116211
I will now find Napoleon of Crime ;)

user228700
10:33 AM
@JohnRennie What, really?!

user228700
How did u get to do s'thing like that?!

user116211
@JohnRennie JohnR, the more I hear about you, the more I'm becoming a fan; you should write a book on your adventures.

helloo

user228700
@MAFIA36790 Ikr?! @JohnRennie: God, u're cool.

what a bunch of dorks

user228700
10:35 AM
Heyya @Kenshin :-)

Lot's of people worked as guides in the caves. It isn't any great claim to fame. The pay was rubbish and after the first few days it was pretty boring!

well you are just guiding a bunch of rocks
not very thrilling

They used to get students to do it the holidays because we were desperate for money and would do anything

user116211
@Slereah, did you do anything thrilling?

user228700
@JohnRennie Ah, I see.

10:37 AM
I once blew up a washing machine with friends
3
It was quite thrilling

You have explosive friends?

user228700
How did u do it?

user228700
@JohnRennie No. Stop. Please.

user116211
@Slereah O.o

No, but they had explosives in their possession

user116211
10:38 AM
don't tell me you used TNT for that.

No
Just flash powder

user116211
good

TNT sux

user228700
10:39 AM
@Kenshin: I hope u mean the company.

of course

user228700
:-D

"Delova rana´s really produced only in the Czech Republic and always only from fresh chemical compositions!"
To be fair their explosives are kind of shit and some don't work, but the ones that do
hard to find better stuff in western europe

user116211
@Slereah Lumo might use it often.

user116211
BTW, didn't check his blog for long.

user228700
10:41 AM
Hey, @Kenshin: Did u hear? It might arrive today!

noway

Lumo's fine

dats awesom

He's not a crank
He's just a giant dick

user228700
It is! Either today or tomorrow. :-D

user228700
10:43 AM
...probably tomorrow tho. @JohnRennie: It's still sitting at the depot.

does ur family hvae a car @Kaumudi.H

user116211
The Reference Frame has an all new wallpaper!! Lubos is celebrating Christmas!!

user116211
And again, that commie Bohm's exorcism ;/

user228700
@Kenshin Yep, a black santro.

"Both the pilot wave theory and the many worlds are irrational and both of them ultimately contradict important and well-established facts about the physical world. Both of them are motivated by the champions' attachment to "realism" – a euphemism for the observer-independent i.e. classical physics. If I had to choose, I would choose the Bohmists as the much worse physicists among the two. They're in a much deeper denial of modern physics."
Still a grinch though

10:47 AM
cool so u can get the depot
do drive it Kaumu
what age do u get your licence in india

user228700
@Kenshin Sadly, 18.

wow that's old

user116211
> You know, one may divide those confused (and/or bigoted) people's efforts to deviate from quantum mechanics as formulated in Copenhagen into two levels:
Dissatisfaction with the philosophical conceptual "words" that Heisenberg, Bohr, Pauli, Dirac, Wigner, von Neumann, and others have been teaching us
Disagreement with some universal properties of the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics

user228700
Why would I need to drive tho? I could always go by bus/train.

oh k i idn't know
I hate bus

user116211
10:49 AM
And some political talks, hmm.

user228700
But I don't think that's happening. My parents will ask me to quit jumping around and wait for it. A train ride would be nice tho...

user228700
But "unsafe" for women to go alone. Sigh.

oh that's a shame

user228700
Yeah. Lots of construction workers on the train...kinda scary sometimes.

r construction workers baddies?

user228700
10:52 AM
Sometimes, yeah. I mean, they stare. A lot. So, yeah, that's scary.

@Kenshin violence against women is an issue in some parts of India.

oh that's no good

user116211
@JohnRennie yes, because we are not ruled by commies yet.

what do you mean @MAFIA36790

@MAFIA36790 Last time I looked the UK wasn't ruled by commies and violence against women is relatively rare here.

user116211
10:55 AM
Seriously speaking, it's because they are not aware. I think the crime will be extricated only by means of spreading education.

user116211
There are laws; but do those criminals care?

user228700
It's mostly because of the, um, well, this is me opening a can of worms but just to be clear, the government is only half responsible. It's mostly because in most illiterate families, women are not given an ounce of respect.

Get the Queen back in charge of India, I say

user228700
The husband doesn't treat the wife in the proper way, the kids learn from that, etc...

user228700
@Slereah Wasn't any better then. We just had a lot of other issues eclipsing these everyday happenings.

user116211
10:57 AM
@Slereah BTW, did you see Putin not giving a helping hand to the Queen a little while ago? He is just a badass.

I believe that is just being rude

why does the Queen need a helping hand?

Poor diplomatic skills will not serve him well when he is in trouble

user116211
Putin doesn't need help from anyone.

user116211
He is The Man.

10:59 AM
@MAFIA36790 to be fair, there is a strict rule that you don't touch the Queen.
Not even if you're premier of Russia.

user116211
@JohnRennie Huh!

He's leading a corrupt country with poor military

Not even her husband can

I'm guessing he might not get his ways at all opportunities
@JohnRennie is it actually enforced
I recall Michelle Obama doing it

What's with the hate against Russia

11:00 AM
I hope I don't get flamed for this, but I think Putin is one of the better leaders around at the moment.

WTF

user116211
@Slereah Well, he promised to end Daesh all by his force.

In pretty much every area where he and the West have disagreed he has been proven right.

Promises are cheap
Also domestically he is not very good

@Slereah I don't think that's true.

user116211
11:01 AM
@Slereah We can't know much of the domestic affairs.

Can't we

@JohnRennie So do you think Putin is right about Trump too?

user116211
Might be the West Media spices the news up.

user116211
@Kenshin Trump is actually an ordinary Republican, nothing else.

Russia is in a mess as a result of its history. No one man can change that. Putin is trying to keep a lid on things and I think he's doing pretty well. In 50 years Russians will look back on Putin as one of the men who formed modern Russia.

11:02 AM
@MAFIA36790 he's a billionaire and he's unique in many ways
all republicans aren't equal mate

user116211
Putin is also helping the Assad Regime to fight the anti-govt and Daesh forces.

I hope I don't get flamed for this but I think Kim Jong Un is the greatest leader at the moment

user116211
The Fat Kim?

that's not nice

user116211
Yeh, he is the commie left after Castro.

11:04 AM
to judge him by his adipose levle

@MAFIA36790 Look what happened in Syria. The West encouraged the rebels and now we have millions dead or displaced and a fanatical Islamic state that has killed people in the West and in Russia.

@JohnRennie the West needs to encourage the rebels
the West needs power in the middle east because we depend on oil

@Kenshin that's easy for you to say when it's not you or your family doing the dying.

imagine your life without crude oil or natural gas @JohnRennie

user116211
@JohnRennie indeed

11:07 AM
@JohnRennie if we give up oil, western families would die
because our hospital system and transportation system all depend on oil
If there was no transportation, how many days before New York runs out of food and millions die?

There is still loads of oil available. Stirring up a shitstorm in Syria has not affected oil availability in any significant way. The whole episode has been unremittingly bad for everyone.

about 3 days

But this is getting a bit heated for the PSE chat room so I suggest we return to talking about physics.

ok

user116211
#changetopic

11:09 AM
@JohnRennie what is the best alternate source of energy for if we could no longer use crude oil or natural gas

user116211
What's your plan for Christmas @JohnRennie?

@MAFIA36790 I'm driving down to Wookey Hole (!) to visit my mother. She's 84 and doesn't get out much these days so I spend the Christmas holiday with her.

user116211
@JohnRennie so nice :))) I'm a fan.

how sweet

My mother is not a sweet old lady. She is, to use the vernacular, full of piss and vinegar :-) But she enjoys the company.

user228700
11:24 AM
So this place will be relatively empty on the 25th...

yes that day is christmas
we go and visit family then

user228700
Right. Sounds nice :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie: I called them again :-P (Hey, don't judge me, it's my mom's birthday and we gots to go out in the evening)

@Kaumudi.H :-) And ?

user228700
This time, the person asked if I knew the name of the person with whom I (well, my dad) had spoken with in the afternoon.

11:32 AM
why does that matter

user228700
Apparently, once we confirm that the money is ready, a mail will be sent to the delivery department and then they will send it.

@Kaumudi.H Ah, so it was a good thing you phoned. So I take it you've confirmed the money is ready and waiting?

user228700
Now they didn't tell my father any of this and my father is dozing so I dunno the name of that person so that this person can confirm if the mail was sent but he jotted down my dad's number and told me that he'd give me a call if he receives a reply from the delivery dept.

why ar ethy so disorganised
John should demand his delivery fee back

@Kaumudi.H I'm guessing that waking your father up wouldn't be a good move given that he is paying :-)

user228700
11:35 AM
@JohnRennie Yes, this is the 2nd time we've confirmed that the money is ready. Hopefully, the delivery dept. actually sees the mail and they get things going.

user228700
@JohnRennie I think my mom's paying :-P

@Kaumudi.H she'll be wanting to use the laptop in return :-)

@JohnRennie why did the flag comment disappear?

user228700
@Kenshin God, Ikr? I wonder if the mail had been sent in the afternoon. Mostly not, since it's still just sitting there.

@JohnRennie she has a laptop already
for work

user228700
11:37 AM
@JohnRennie She has been joking about that :-P

@Kaumudi.H should I send another laptop for your mother?

user228700
@Kenshin But it's like...dying. Every second.

user228700
@JohnRennie x'D After all this nonsense? No, thanks!

@Kenshin do you mean the star board? If so I cancelled the stars on the more politically charged posts.

I see

11:38 AM
And will continue to do so.
Politics and chat rooms are a poor mixture

how come, politics can be rational

@Kaumudi.H but surely it would be fun to do this all over again? :-)

@JohnRennie can you pls send me headphones as a gift
in particular Bose wireless Noise Cancellation oens if you have them

user228700
@JohnRennie NOPE! :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie: Dang, I've turned u into a hardware store :-P

user116211
11:42 AM
@Kenshin BOSE are bit expensive; but it worths the price.

yeah it's a tough decision

Good old Bose

cos it's $500 for the ones I like

I was always a fan of Sennheiser in my youth

He made the Bose Einstein statistics
And now he makes headphones
Keep shooting for the stars

11:43 AM
yeah I do want to support the bloke
for al lhis physics contributions

user116211
@Slereah That Bose was a professor of Calcutta and Dhaka University; the headphone guy was an acoustic engineer from Cambridge.

I am aware
It was a jest

@MAFIA36790 you ruined the jest ;p

user116211
runs away

user228700
Hey, @Kenshin: What advice would u give to ur 18 year-old self? Just general stuff-maybe two/three lines? @JohnRennie: You?

11:44 AM
@Kaumudi.H probably, just keep doing what you're doing

user228700
Like, u'll tell him "Keep doing what u're doing"? That's not at all helpful! How am I to know what u were doing at 18?!

user116211
Hello @loong!

I thought I was giving me advice tho

@MAFIA36790 hi!

@Kaumudi.H actually this pretty much nails it:

user116211
11:46 AM
Did you check Mart's new pic, @loong?

user228700
@Kenshin Well, yeah, but Idk what u were doing at 18, man!

I was doing my degree

user116211
I was bit amazed ;P

@MAFIA36790 Is it new?

@Kaumudi.H I know what advice to give

user116211
11:48 AM
I don't know; but he's changed.

user228700
@JohnRennie What? Just "Wear sunscreen"? I've never worn sunscreen once in my whole life. Apart from super rich people who spend literal hours taking care of their skin, nobody wears sunscreen here :-P

user228700
@Kenshin What is it?

@Kaumudi.H my advice to myself would be do what you enjoy and are good at and never worry about what the community thinks one "ought" or should do

user228700
@JohnRennie Dammit. Sorry. Reading :-P

user228700
11:50 AM
@Kenshin Okay, yeah, that's pretty great.

@Kaumudi.H I'd also recommend sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB. Because UVA rays cause the majority of human skin ageing

@Kenshin I'd guess that most Tamils have enough melanin to block the uv ...

@JohnRennie I don't know if they block UVA though
UVB causes sunburn
but UVA causes slow long term damage that results in ageing
but maybe the melanin blocks both, I'd have to research it

user228700
@JohnRennie I'm not a Tamilian!!! :-P

user228700
Hey, @JohnRennie: I've not finished listening to it (but omg, thanks sharing!) but I was wondering. "Do something that scares u everyday".

11:54 AM
@Kaumudi.H don't do it
it's stupid

@Kaumudi.H Keralans too.

user228700
Really? I mean, a) That's incredibly difficult to do in that u'd have to go out of ur way to do scary things everyday and b) Is it really that...valuable? I mean, everyday?

user228700
@Kenshin What is? Doing scary Shtuff every day?

@Kaumudi.H don't do it. Be reasonable, don't succomb to these fads and silly ideas they include in click bait articles

@Kaumudi.H :-) I think he means that challenges are good i.e. doing what you're not sure you can accomplish stretches you and makes you a better person.
I wouldn't recommend playing Russian roulette every day :-)

user116211
11:57 AM
Just two words:

user116211
Be Chuck Norris.

user228700
@JohnRennie Right...

user228700
@Kenshin Yeah, no, don't worry, I'll think things through :-P

For example a challenge might be learning about Gibb's free energy. That's scary :-)

user228700
Boy, you couldn't be more correct! :-D

11:57 AM
@Kaumudi.H what's the purpose of doing something scary? There is none. It's pointless, maybe adrenaline junkies might like it and that's ok because then they're doing what they enjoy, but otherwise it's pointless.

My next challenge is to learn quantum field theory, and that's very scary!

user116211
@JohnRennie Ah! You changed your profile bio too!

@JohnRennie have no fear just approach it step by step
I'm sure you'll easily be able to grasp it
you have all the foundations
should be easy for you

user228700
@Kenshin Well, I sort of agree with @JohnR in that if the scary stuff is not just for a crazy adrenaline high, it can be really valuable to get to know parts of urself u thought never even existed...

user116211
Was your thesis digitised by the University itself @JohnRennie?
