@Danu Hell if I know.

@KyleKanos imgur?

SO was on screen SGDQ
@Danu You don't know imgur?

But what does it have to do with it
Your SO is a speedrunner?

@Danu Oh, people post Louis CK quotes on imgur all the time and people in the comments section discuss about how he's changed their opinion on life & how he's always right and dumb stuff like that
@Danu No, SO = Stack Overflow

1:17 PM
@KyleKanos Hahaha, nice

@Danu How does the scenario in that article not violate the non-splitting theorem? That theorem has nothing to do with thermodynamics.

@KyleKanos oh...
That he offends you kind of makes me sigh though
@0celo7 Check yo' assumptions?
(I haven't read either in detail so I wouldn't know)

Well, this exam was an exercise in "I'll throw out some words and hope it looks as if I know what I'm talking about" :D

You shouldn't take a person who says "white people are the worst" seriously.
@ACuriousMind What was asked?

@ACuriousMind QFT/10
@0celo7 ...but he's right ;)

1:21 PM
the answer was QFT

@0celo7 everything from Crank-Nicholson schemes, Metropolis algorithms, lattice gauge theory, fermion doubling to Monte-Carlo autocorrelations, real-time scalar fields and the Ising model

@ACuriousMind I recognize some of those words...

And only vague questions like "Discuss this" or "Scetch possible solutions"
I wrote pages without a single actual formula, I feel dirty.

pages
I can't write pages

Stupid question: What does this mean: "The element $\alpha=x+(h)\in K[x]/(h)$ is clearly a root of $h$ in $K[x]/(h)$"? (here $h$ is the principal ideal generated by the irreducible ponynomial $h$ of degree $n$)

1:25 PM
You people write too much
@Danu Putting "stupid question" on there is just mean to those of us who haven't heard of...any of that

@ACuriousMind something to cheer you up i.imgur.com/OwuRI8Y.jpg

@Danu it means that h(x) is zero...which is tautological since dividing h out precisely means setting h(x) to zero identically.
@0celo7 D'awww :)

@Danu What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target.
I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot.

@ACuriousMind Confusingly tautological (not unlike tautological bundles over Grassman manifolds)

1:29 PM
The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit.
If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.
Geez that's long...
@Danu wow

@0celo7 next time pliz just post "What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know [etc]" lol

@Danu yes, but it's the way you get roots when you have none. I take it you're reading about field extensions?

...or "[insert gorilla warfare copypasta]"
@ACuriousMind Yeah

@Danu that doesn't have the same effect

@0celo7 The second option is better because it preserves the essential LOL moment in the thing.

1:32 PM
@ACuriousMind So that Oblivion Gate took forever.
@Danu I think the punch line is the last sentence.
But the chat post limit kinda ruins it.

@0celo7 Naw, it's just a repeat of what he says before :P

@Danu ctrl + F shows "kiddo" only once...

@0celo7 Yeah, duh.
But the same message is repeated about 5 times :P

@Danu I found field extensions...Not all that interesting, although the results about solvable polynomials are nice

@Danu I think "kiddo" is the punchline.

1:35 PM
I think you have a weird idea of what a punchline is :P

yo momma a punch line

@0celo7 Imma punch yo momma's line

@Danu What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know [etc]

@ACuriousMind Yeah, I really like these abstract setups of things like quotienting out prime principal ideals and stuff but then when it comes to concretizing I'm kinda meh... The most beautiful result in the entire book is the (numerous incarnations of) the Homomorphism Theorem, IMO.
Also, I don't care about polynomials :P

I have a ferocious lion who can rek you
although I did clip his claws the other day...give him a week to return to fighting condition

1:39 PM
@Danu Then you would like category theory ;)

@ACuriousMind So now you have time to do whatever?

@ACuriousMind exactly, which is why I'm working towards that goal over the coming 2 years

@0celo7 No :/ There's a bug in my Polyakov loop, I have to go bug hunting over the weekend

still?
maybe you should read Straumann, maybe he has something on QCD loops

I do like this a lot

1:42 PM
It seems the zeroes I get are not the correct result

I would hope one can do the same thing with quartic roots to get $\mathbb{H}$... maybe? Although the noncommutative structure is something you probably [read: definitely] won't get haha

So I have to revisit the Monte-Carlo sweep, and see if it does what it should
@Danu C is algebraically closed, you can't non-transcendentally extend it further

@ACuriousMind Right...

@ACuriousMind I just checked and I have 15GB worth of mods in Skyrim.

Hm
Is it reasonable to have a field solution that only depends on time

1:46 PM
No wonder it has a hard time launching :D

phi(x) = f(t)
Seems weird
Field value varies in time but not space

@Slereah that's kinda bad if your space is not compact, I think

Inflaton, guys? lol

Yeah, I guess it gives it infinite energy
Well it is a solution of the quartic interaction
$\partial^2 \phi+\phi^3= 0$

@Slereah please use mathjax in chat

1:48 PM
$\partial^2 \phi + \lambda \phi^3 = 0$

Right

I got a solution that just kinda oscillate as a giant block
Can I use it or is it somewhat pathological

@Slereah $\nabla \phi=0$ is a standard requirement when solving the eqn of motion for the inflaton
I don't see a big problem with it, as long as you're interested in energy densities and stuff mainly

Yeah
Good to know
I will still try to find a more reasonable solution, but it's good to know I can still use it

We kind of expect dark energy to be of this type anyways, and nobody really cares about finite total energy

1:54 PM
::mumbles something about square-integrability and well-tempered distributions::

It's not a quantum field

:: farts ::

It's just a classical field

Alright, then it's okay ;)
@Danu u wot m8

@Danu that smell... gosh! :D

1:59 PM
It's an acquired taste @gonenc

Good that my phone doesn't have olfactoric capacities yet

That is a problem with field things

@Danu I don't think so :D :P

Sometimes whether a paper is QFT or CFT is a bit ambiguous when it starts

@Danu why did you feel the urge to write that? :D

2:02 PM
@gonenc The truth must be heard.
@Slereah Lol

you think it's CFT, then suddenly
"And this is the propagator"
Oh okay

@Danu lol if you say so :D

2:25 PM
I wonder if there is any relationship between the amount of water in my bathtub and the temperature of my coffee. Generally, most people say these have nothing to do with each other. But if I define the variable Y to be the product of the amount of water in my bathtub with the temperature of my coffee, then I have $Y=QT$, where $Q$ is the amount of water in my bathtub and $T$ is the temperature of my coffee. So judging from this formula, I think that the temperature of my coffee should be inversely proportional to the amount of water in my bathtub. — WillO Jul 16 at 13:05
uber-duplicate should be a thing.

3:01 PM
@alarge and @DanielSank do you know any video players for linux with good bookmark support?
vlc has some bookmark support but they vanish upon closing the video file
banshee's bookmarks don't vanish but it takes a lot of effort with mouse to set them -no hotkeys for bookmarks-

What do you mean bookmark support?
Like saving a particular point in the video?
If that is the case, then SMPlayer has that feature

@KyleKanos ok I have a full opera file and just want to mark the arias etc. without the intermediate conversation
@KyleKanos exactly
@KyleKanos I forgot you were using linux too :D

@DominicMichaelis hi
@KyleKanos I'll check it

Actually I'm wrong, SMPlayer doesn't have it (cf. this forum posting)
But the top suggests that KMPlayer does have that feature

3:11 PM
@KyleKanos which is a windows software?

Should be available on PC & Linux: kmplayer.com
And apparently mobile as well

@KyleKanos checking that now

I got some confusion with Plancks law (that for radiation) because of in the german wikipedia version, there is a \frac{1}{c^3} term in it and in the english one a \frac{1}{c^2} term. In our lecture (as the script says at least) we had a \frac{1}{c^3} term too, but in the solutions somehow he multplies with the speed of light

@KyleKanos this is some bugged up player

Actually maybe it is Windows only :/
The DL page has only a setup.exe file

3:15 PM
@KyleKanos I tried simply sudo apt-get install kmplayer
which not so surprisingly worked

Yeah, it's either something different or an older version

but it is not to be used at its current state
@KyleKanos there is a workaround in vlc
which is to save it as playlist and play it
but it is a not-so-pretty workaround

@DominicMichaelis Seems that B (on the EN page) isn't U (on the DE page)
The boxed equations at the bottom of the DE page give the same relation as top of the EN page

@KyleKanos do you have the link to that bow mod?

@DominicMichaelis btw you can use $\LaTeX$ in the chat room upon installing the chatjax extension

3:19 PM
Aforementioned ChatJax extension can be found here: meta.math.stackexchange.com/questions/1088/…

Is that mod OP?

I didn't think so
It just levels out the damage dealt by arrows so that they're more useful

@KyleKanos oh thanks, I hope this explains my confusion.

@DominicMichaelis Looking back at the EN page, it says that U=4pi*B/c, which would give you the difference between the two: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
@0celo7 Though it could be OP if you get 100 Agility, 100 Sneak & 100 Marksman

@0celo7 Er ... I know you two are just messing around, but if we let this kind of language go unremarked we risk having it used as a president by users who are either malicious or insensitive to the distinction.

3:34 PM
ok

*precedent

@dmckee is it ok to censor them like f*ck?
^that was a hell of a typo :D

IMO: there's about 10 different words to use instead of each of the canonical 7 dirty words

@KyleKanos tits really?

That one caught your eye and not piss?

3:37 PM
^^

@KyleKanos piss too I didn't read the list just barely scrolled down to see what is on the list
but piss shouldn't be on the list either imho

My point remains though: you don't have to use the "dirty words" when you have many other words that mean the same thing

mh why exactly is the energy emitted the product of energy density and the speed of light?

@KyleKanos I only use them to emphasize something eg I #insert dirty word# hate calculating riemann tensor by hand

@KyleKanos I have over 4,000 gold. Can I buy a house with that?

3:41 PM
what else could I use for emphasis except for italic or bold or both?

@0celo7 Yes
Of course, just joining the Dark Brotherhood would allow you access to their secret hideout and a free bed

that's a damn shack
I have a bed from the mage guild

I only played Skyrim

I need a chest
I could just start experimenting with alchemy...
there are also DLC houses

You can get a house + chest for 2400 in the Imperial City

3:43 PM
cool beans

House for 2k and House Storage Area for 400

I'll check that out as soon as I finish looting Kvatch

Internet says after joining the guild, raid the house of everything and sell it
Most notably the books
And do the Arena sidequest

the house?

Yes, the Mages Guild house, for example

3:49 PM
why would I do that

For money

unless that stuff respawns I won't do it

Well you can do item duplication: uesp.net/wiki/…

@KyleKanos if you play on the computer you always can use the console ...

or I could console in money

3:51 PM
One way is cheating, the other is abusing game mechanics

stream is up

exploiting is cheating isn't it ?

No, exploiting isn't cheating

@KyleKanos Yeah. That. Spelling is my third biggest weakness. Right after coffee and chocolate.

3:55 PM
@DominicMichaelis Though I could possibly agree with the statement in context of online gaming (i.e., pvp)

@KyleKanos where on earth Nirn is this house

What house?
The Mages' Guild house?

@KyleKanos I used the console in skyrim i think after my first 300 hours gaming :D

@KyleKanos the shack in the imperial city

@0celo7 Waterfront district

3:56 PM
ty

@DominicMichaelis Never used the console for any of the TES games (which is really just 3 & 4 for me)

@gonenc I'm not even saying never use those words.
Some grownups spar at each other a lot and that's fine.

@Kyle well I hoped it would help agains Karstaag, because he wasn't onehit (I played daggers with 30 * bonus damage from hidden) and everything which isn't onehit is nearly impossible to kill :D

Just don't let it overwhelm the feeling that this place is safe for outsiders and inhabitted by professionals and those that will be.

thought i could make a poison for him but he was immune to it :D

3:58 PM
I'd argue that your tactics would need improving.

christ the imperial city is huge
@KyleKanos Karstaag on Legendary difficulty is crazy insanely hard.
One hit kill even if you've hit the armor cap.

@0celo7 yes i didn't manage him, i need to change difficulty

Seriously, hang out in the hotel bar during a APS conference and you'll hear lots of shop talk and the occasional rassing of buddies from grad school.
You're also at risk of paying US$16 for a shot of decent single malt if they hold it in the #(*&%$# downtown Hilton like they did this April.
What's up with that?
US$250 a night for rooms and they don't even have free WiFi!

@KyleKanos I found the house, how the heck do I buy it?

@0celo7 and my char was level 90 +

4:02 PM
Again, one-hit-kill strategies are not good ones

@DominicMichaelis the only way I could beat him was to use the fortify restoration potion chain glitch
@KyleKanos I mean he will OHKO you

@0celo7 Office of Imperial Commerce

wtf this place is huge
which district?

on the second hardest difficulty he was onehit ...

Market District

4:03 PM
thanks

I really should install Skyrim again :D

you should
it's pretty great

yeah steam says i played it for 516 hours ... :D
but mages really suck in the endgame

did you get SkyRe?

4:10 PM
@KyleKanos "I don't trust you enough to talk about that"
wtf I can't buy the house

You probably just need to make her happy

yeah I had to bribe her

@0celo7 nope not yet

@Danu I get thoughts like these at most questions of that user. He's getting this stuff from actual papers and the like, though, so not his fault. I tried to "translate" some of the questions into proper group theory (so I could answer them), but I almost always hit something I can't really understand because the terminology is alien to me or I can't make mathematical sense of it. :/

sneaking was kind of exploit at all ^^

4:19 PM
cool have the house and the storage
how the heck does alchemy work in this game...

Mortar & pestle

what do the other things do
retort, alembic, calcinator

Nothing really
Well, they can improve the quality of the items made, but not significantly enough for purposes of selling the items

does that happen automatically?
I can't find a way to use them explicitly

IDK, I'm reading now
> [Retort & Alembic] don't work any different that any other alchemical items. You only need to have them in your inventory to get the effects they offer. The resort will improve positive effects, the alembic reduces negative effects, and the calcinator increases all effects. Note, the alembic has no effect when poisons so there is no need to drop it every time you want to make a poison.

4:32 PM
> Tom and Maddie stick to beers as promised. At some point, Tom sees her quietly slip into a room with several other people. Worried, he follows her and sees several people cutting lines of coke.

So if you've got them in your inventory whilst your alchemizing, it'll work. But the M&P are the only things you really need

please just kill me
@KyleKanos I have all of them

Suggestions to making money are finding items that have Restore Fatigue as first effect & make Quick Restore potions
You can even go to an innkeeper, buy their food that does that, make it in front of them, then sell it to them
For profit

quick restore?
> Q: It's safe to mix drugs as long as you control the amount you take.
Whatever happened to don't do drugs??

@gonenc Not a clue. Ain't nobody got time for that.

And remember to sell each potion one at a time so that you gain Mercantile

waaaaat
one at a time?
@KyleKanos "quick restore" is not on that page

Yeah, I may be reading the internets wrong

@KyleKanos learn to read
???
why is maybe an answer?

5:07 PM
@KyleKanos so what is quick restore

@gonenc thought I might clarify that: the problem is not the words, it's the (seemingly) aggressive tone. So censoring words doesn't change anything.

@0celo7 It's a potion that restores fatigue

@KyleKanos I'll work on that later
> Correct. In 2014, e-cigarette use surpassed traditional cigarette use amongst 8th, 10th, and 12th graders.
Why would you smoke...
I love how the 11th graders still like the traditional stuff.

5:25 PM
@0celo7 Probably for the same reasons teenagers drink or do drugs (among other things)
Peer pressure and, if considered separately, familial influence

Is it possible to smoke cigarettes and not get addicted?

Probably not due to the nicotine

Apparently nicotine is more addictive than heroin

obe
5:47 PM
@KyleKanos Some people smoke every few months only, how?

Probably because there's no hard rule about "how many before one is addicted"
Some people smoke 1 pack a day, some people 1 cigarette a day, still others 2+ packs a day

People actually use triggering?
