@Cows But will you tell the person of the apposite sex that you're meeting field theory after you say good night?

@dmckee Did you click the link I sent you?

To y-combinator? Yeah. But the tab is still sitting there. I haven't done anything with it yet.

@dmckee Here's how I use it:
1. Think of a stack you might want to work with (C, Rust, Python, Linux for me)
2. Write a paragraph explaining how you're good with those for the emails you'll send. Just copy/paste it later, changing company names, job names, etc.
3. grep for those keywords on the page, find the jobs you're interested, copy/paste the posts on a txt document
4. Start sending emails to everyone
Always mention you found them on hackernews, it makes them like you

@BernardoMeurer what did you get on that philosophy essay

@0celo7 She's still reading it

looool

She said it's too complex, so she needed extra time to grade it

@BernardoMeurer do you regret writing a tome?
or a manifesto, rather

Nah, I like what I created, I think the result was rather cool
And I learned a lot in the process too
I don't care what grade I get

very zen

@0celo7 It's a surefire way to fail miserably academically and be depressed :)

once long ago wrote 10pg philosophy of AI essay when teacher said 3 was sufficient, got A anyway, teacher said "this is too long for this class"

@vzn I did a similar thing, except I wrote 22 pages and the expected length was 5
And my theme wasn't AI :P

vzn
@BernardoMeurer lol not too different if you cited Turing. bet you will get A but maybe go easier next time :P

Honestly I'm surprised it wasn't rejected

1:26 AM
@0celo7 I told her I was writing a lot, she said she didn't mind

vzn
@0celo7 lol rejections are with journal submissions, not undergraduate classes, esp philosophy ones :P
@0celo7 ps what do you know about zen anyway? (hint: it tends to be about [power of] brevity sometimes) :P

I would like to know the community's opinion on how to deal with this question:
0
Q: Is Absolute Zero Possible?

Daniel TurczynskyjThermal energy is the energy an object due to the motion of it's molecules. This means as long as an objects molecules have kinetic energy, it will not reach absolute zero. Does that mean if there was a complete vacuum, it would be at absolute zero inside the vacuum because there is no molecules,...

The accepted answer is wrong.
..and the question is now closed as a duplicate. I am tempted to flag the whole thing for deletion since it serves no purpose other than to perpetuate misunderstandings about vacuum fluctuations.
(voted to close, but still interested in opinions)

@DanielSank Burn it to the ground

It's a pity that the newbies keep getting misguided by JD who shows no improvement at all and continues posting nonsense.

Yes I am rather concerned by JD's affect on those who don't know better than to believe incorrect content that sounds right if you don't know better.
Hey @JohnDuffield, based on something you wrote on the main site, I gather that you have a common misunderstanding about zero point energy. I'd be interested in attempting to help you understand some of the nuances, if you're interested.
In particular, zero point energy does not preclude a system from being at zero temperature.
I just noticed something interesting.
When I am ignorant on a point of physics, I'll generally avoid putting forth any opinion on that point. I might say "I think maybe {...} because {...} but I'm not sure".
Generally, the average non-physicist will say "I don't know physics".
On the other hand, there are occasionally people who insist that they understand physics well, but really know very little with any reasonable level of accuracy. Why do these folks exist?
What motivates the state of known a tiny bit of the subject, enough to construct sentences that kind of sound legit to a n00b, but not enough to know that you don't actually know what you're talking about?

4:37 AM
@Blue Hi ! What should be y strategy for maths for advanced ?

Anonymous
@DanielSank Well, I doubt he realizes the multilevels of misconceptions he has about physics. Trying to correct him is like going down a rabbit hole since every alternate sentence he speaks is wrong. And that is what happens when one directly jumps to Einstein's papers without understanding basic physics.

@Blue That's kind of my point.
Consider a binary tree where each node is a logical point of physics.

Anonymous
@Tanuj Practice lots of past papers I guess

A discussion can be thought to be such a tree. At each node, we pose a yes/no question and decide where to go next.
What is the probability that an uninformed individual will hit five wrong turns in a row?

Depends what probability distribution they're drawing from.

4:41 AM
It's (1/2)^5 = 1/32.
So, if I talking with an unbiased, ignorant person, it's unlikely that they'll argue against reason five points in a row.
Despite this, there are people who seems to argue against reason all the time.
This is clearly not an unbiased random walk down the tree.
It almost seems the individual wants to argue, or wants to believe that everyone else is wrong. There is some prior motive in that person's mind that affects how they engage in scientific reasoning and discussion.

This seems very unlikely to go anywhere useful, if I'm honest.

Now here's a point: if someone comes to this site with that motivation, are they conforming to site policies?
@Semiclassical I think it's very important. The question of how to deal with entities that consistently produce misinformation wrapped up to be appealing to newbies is important.
2

I'll note that I disagree pretty much entirely with JD's statements on physics (he has historical points I agree with at times). But a conversation that starts from the standpoint of "you're wrong, stop it" is not intended as a dialogue.

@Semiclassical I'm not talking about JD. Several users have done what I'm talking about.
I am interested in two general questions:

Ah, I missed the transition.

4:47 AM
@Blue Definitely , but where to study the theory and other conceptual questions from ? What book do you suggest ?

Anonymous
@Tanuj Just revise whatever you studied in the past 2 years. Not much time left to read new books

1) Is it possible to objectively identify {unwillingness to discuss science in good faith}?
2) Is unwillingness to discuss science in good faith a precluding factor to contributing to this site?

@Blue ok. Also , I have a doubt rest mass of photon is 0 . Does everything moving at the speed of light have 0 rest mass ?

@Tanuj there's not a lot of things to compare photons with in that regard

Let me put this another way: We know that we don't like SPAM posts. For example, a post on the main site that advertises my chocolate cookies is deleted as SPAM. Is posting nonscientific nonsense that sounds like science also SPAM?
Perhaps none of this matters and wrong answers should be handled case-by-case, but when wrong answers that sound right to n00bs show up, I get nervous (especially when they get upvotes and accepted), particularly when repeatedly produced by the same person.

4:52 AM
(by which I mean, the photon stands alone when it comes to particles moving at the speed of light)

Anonymous
@Tanuj Yes, rest mass of a photon is 0. Which other particle do you think travels at the speed of light?

((ignoring QFT aspects / virtual particles because that's not helpful))

@Blue no other , yeah. Basically all EM waves constitute photons , right ?

more like the reverse.

@JohnRennie Hi :) Good morning
@Semiclassical yeah my bad

My main activity re: questions has been on the Math SE (and even that's not been in a while), so I'm sitting out the conversation.

@Tanuj Actually I think neutrinos come close, but not sure if they're considered to have rest mass zero. As far as I remember, they had found an error bound for the mass.

They're not believed to be massless, no.
Flavor oscillations and all that.

Anonymous
@Semiclassical Makes sense

4:59 AM
Lots of websites wrongly claim that neutrinos have a 0 rest mass.

For a good number of calculations you might as well treat them as though they have zero mass, just to make the math easier. But that's an approximation, not an exact statement.

Anonymous
Experimenting with them is a tough job anyway :P

Ah, yes, true.

Hello, everyone :-)

Yeah. I've actually been to two neutrino detectors (both in MN---the UMN has a definite connection to neutrino physics). First one was in a former underground mine, and the detector was big. The second was the new installation they were completing at the time, and it was way bigger :)
That's the new one

As the Soudan Iron Mine, it has been designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark. == History == In the late 19th century, prospectors searching for gold in northern Minnesota discovered extremely rich veins of hematite at this site, often containing more than 65% iron. It's been less than a month I believe

oh okay...... he could get rich with what he's been doing here

Plus, speaking as someone who was debating him pretty vociferously, he does have a grasp of some historical subtleties that get glossed over. (I disagree with how he interprets those subtleties and seeks to apply them, but he's not creating quotes out of nowhere.)

deepak chopra is solidly new age crap

@PrathyushPoduval Yeah I know him, funny to listen to his nonsense tho

he may misuse QM as a sideshow, but his main goal isn't to convince you that he's right about physics
it's to sell stuff to people who don't know better

5:44 AM
@SirCumference lol yeah

@Semiclassical yes it is
@JohnRennie I believe I've found out why my keyboard had kept malfunctioning

@PrathyushPoduval aha, what was it?

JD is frustrating, but DC is contemptible
I'm probably already past the Be Nice threshold, though, so I'll leave it at that.

@JohnRennie during one of the "episodes", I went here keyboardtester.com/tester.html, and saw for a moment that the page up key was fired (just once). Subsequently, that key stopped working (And the problem stopped too). Now, the problem slightly started again, and when I tested it the pg up key also was working. I tried manually using that key and it causes the same effects (cursor, scroll) I've seen. So my diagnosis is that the page up keeps randomly firing :P
@SirCumference ha ha I've seen that

5:48 AM
Do you get the problem in Linux? If so it must be a dodgy key, which would make it a warranty issue.

oh okay, I'll check it out
the thing is it happens randomly
and idk what triggers it
@JohnRennie should I install a keylogging software to furthur investigate the issue?

@PrathyushPoduval I don't think keylogging software would help.

@PrathyushPoduval You need to uninstall the malware first
Remove Windows

So how're your guys' lives?

@JohnRennie hmm okay, why not?
@BernardoMeurer lol i do have linux

5:52 AM
It sounds like the key is sticking and generating rogue signals.

@PrathyushPoduval Use Linux instead, and Linux alone

@BernardoMeurer Please...stop using malware to refer to software not intended to harm the user

@BernardoMeurer Linux didn't configure the WLAN card properly. Maybe you could help, but after the exam season :-)

@SirCumference As far as I'm concerned infringing on the users' freedoms is harming the user

@BernardoMeurer Oh give me a break :P

5:53 AM
@JohnRennie Hmm, that's a rare issue these days

That's not the same thing and you know it

@SirCumference I'm not joking. Running Windows is akin to torture

@BernardoMeurer What

@BernardoMeurer I have seen it happen with this build of Ubuntu. As I recall @Kaumudi got the same problem.

@BernardoMeurer I like the UI for windows, and all the softwares. But there were some softwares available only for linux and macos, due to which I installed it

5:55 AM
@JohnRennie Ubuntu is just a piece of shit, by god
@SirCumference You heard me

@BernardoMeurer Torturing what exactly?

@PrathyushPoduval It's very easy to move to a Linux-only workflow!
@SirCumference No. In the same way that being tortured infringes on your inalienable human rights, running Windows also infringes on your inalienable rights as a user
Sure, you may chose to do it anyway, and by doing so not claim your rights, but that doesn't make it less of an infringement

"Infringing on inalienable human rights" doesn't equate Windows with torture, come on man
Take it down a notch

What rights are you talking about?
I've never been hindered by windows

@PrathyushPoduval Something about Windows not making its source code public
Idk really

5:58 AM
whats wrong about that?

@SirCumference I'm not "equating", I'm relating. You need to improve your reading comprehension
@PrathyushPoduval It infringes on your rights

how? what rights?

@BernardoMeurer "You need to improve your reading comprehension"

Ffs dude, no need to be so hostile

5:59 AM
@PrathyushPoduval Watch that :)

These arguments are good fun as long as it all remains good natured - a room owner speaks.

lemme see...

@SirCumference Bernardo isn't being hostile
It's a well worn and basically entertaining argument that we trot out when we're bored :-)

^ I meant what I said. If you think "akin" means "equal" there's nothing I can do

"akin" means "related to" doesn't it?

6:01 AM
I mean, let's be real. That's like me analogizing some misdemeanor with the Holocaust...

@JohnRennie Usually it's meant as "sharing a characteristic with" or "analogous"
And also
I’d just like to interject for moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNUcorelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of i

Sid
@JohnRennie akin means similar, no?

@BernardoMeurer so the problem is.... the software's the thing controlling the computer and not the user?

@BernardoMeurer :: John loses the will to live ::

@JohnRennie :)

6:02 AM
Aren't we the one telling the software what to do?

@PrathyushPoduval Keep watching until the end, this is crucial :)

oh okay

The problem is that you are not in control of the software that rules your life, and that's not right. All software must be free, so that society itself can be free
(Free as in freedom, not as in free beer)

I'm just saying you're a bit too passionate about this at times @BernardoMeurer. Repeatedly interjecting conversations with "Windows is malware" is a bit odd

I see myself as doing the same thing
Saving my friends from malware

6:05 AM
That pushes the boundaries of good taste

Fair enough :P

1 message moved to trash

I'll quit it

@SirCumference I have some sympathy with Bernardo's position.
For example with W10 MS are changing a lot of the management interfaces and I really hate the new versions.

Sure, I do too. But I'm merely pointing out how claiming these software are "malware" is misleading at face value.

6:07 AM
But I have no way to go back to the old interfaces as they are simply no longer there. So if I want to use W10 (and I do) I have to go along with what MS do.

@SirCumference Did you even bother to read on why I call it malware?

@BernardoMeurer The wall of text up there?

@SirCumference yes, but Bernardo is just using hyperbolae to make a point, which is a pretty standard tactic in debates.

@SirCumference No, that was an old joke about Linux vs GNU

@JohnRennie Sure, although I'm not really sure what the debate is

6:09 AM
@SirCumference "Malware is the name for a program designed to mistreat its users"
IMHO Windows fits that description

@SirCumference it's kind of a religion I guess :-)

mal·ware ˈmalwer/
noun
software that is intended to damage or disable computers and computer systems.
Windows does not fit any definition that I can find of malware. Even if you go by your subjective definition, you should be clearer lest you confuse others

@SirCumference "The term "malware" only refers to software that is made for malicious purposes and works against users' expectations"
Windows consistently works against users' expectations, IMO
I think it's malware

Again, I'm not going to convince you otherwise. But you should be clearer when you point that out

Maybe if you watched the video I posted instead of complaining about something you know very little about you'd see the point

6:13 AM
@BernardoMeurer I don't need to watch a video to know Windows isn't malware

@SirCumference Oh, okay, I'll say "For a given definition of malware, Windows is malware" from now on, that's obviously an extremely reasonable thing

You don't need to be a weatherman to know which way the wind blows, dude

@SirCumference False analogy if I've ever seen one
You think determining whether something is or isn't malware is as easy as determining which way the wind blows?

@BernardoMeurer "For my definition of malware (most software, apparently), Windows is malware" may work better

It very obviously isn't

6:14 AM
@BernardoMeurer I watched the video, and can agree with your position. But I think calling all the software companies as money mongering overlords is a bit harsh. Propeitary software is propeitary because people have spent their entire day trying to develop it, and do need to survive. If it were released as free, then all their hardwork and time would go down the drain.

@PrathyushPoduval That's not necessarily true, take a look at RedHat :)
And a myriad of other free-software companies
Canonical, comma.ai, and others

@BernardoMeurer Perhaps not, but the vast majority of people will disagree when you say "Windows is malware" at face value. Not everyone has watched the tedious video

The people that maintain the Wine project too
@SirCumference Oh, sorry, I didn't realize that if most people disagree with it it's wrong, my bad
I missed that great argument

@BernardoMeurer I'm not really understanding how the company works. I'm in their website and it looks very confusing

That's not what I said, I'm once again saying you need to be clearer than just saying "your software is malware"
Would "You shouldn't be using Windows because etc." not be clearer?

6:18 AM
@PrathyushPoduval Most Free Software companies work like this:
1. Software is free
2. Support is paid
3. You want a specific feature? Cool, do it yourself or pay us to do it

Oh okay

@SirCumference You shouldn't be using Windows because it's malware
I don't see the problem

so they'll make all the software you want for free?
I wonder if that's profitable

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree

@PrathyushPoduval Well, no
They'll make the software for people who are willing to pay for support and features want, Free (as in freedom)
You can use it as you wish, but if you want support, or you want some feature that it doesn't yet have: pay

6:21 AM
but they make the software for free?

The software itself is free: yes

Anonymous
Well, that type of a business model would have greater probability of being a loss rather than profit. If I were starting a software business I'd be more likely to follow the Microsoft model. Running an open-source software MNC isn't easy.

But the deal is, even with paid software like Windows or w/e, most of the money comes from support cost of corporate/enterprise clients

how do they make the software? What "Base" features do they integrate into the software? (I ask this because of the extra feature thing)

@Blue Microsoft has largely abandoned their own model because it's antiquated, BTW
c.f. the recent restructuring
@PrathyushPoduval That's a project-dependent engineering problem

6:23 AM
hmm okay

Anonymous
6:34 AM
@BernardoMeurer Yes, I agree their model had become outdated. I personally didn't like certain things like having to go to a shop to buy an upgrade disc, which was their previous policy. Even then I notice that that their (established 43 years ago) revenue in 2017 was 30x more than RedHat (which was established 23 years ago). There's a reason why Microsoft is one of the most profitable business in the world, at least as of now. I can't say what will happen in the future

Anonymous
The other option is to go the Google/Facebook way, and make open source softwares and sell "users" instead.

Anonymous
Which is even more profitable

It's good that you believe in "free" as in "freedom", but that model just isn't very profitable.

Deadpool is a 2016 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, distributed by 20th Century Fox. It is the eighth installment of the X-Men film series. The film was directed by Tim Miller from a screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and stars Ryan Reynolds in the title role alongside Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, Brianna Hildebrand, and Stefan Kapičić. In Deadpool, Wade Wilson hunts the man who gave him mutant abilities, but also a scarred physical appearance, as the antihero Deadpool. Development of a Deadpool film starring Reynolds...
