12:00 AM
The idea of multiple universes just seems metaphysically extravagant
Out of dBB I like being able to have a consistent picture/visualization of particles interacting in spacetime
But I’m not sure whether that should be taken as a literal description or just convenient mathematics
(Plus, what works in non-relativistic QM is not necessarily a good strategy for QFT)
@G.Bergeron and then there is, as you say, the niggling doubt that any of this actually matters

@Semiclassical I actually think it does! But I'm aware it gets into philosophy.
I suggest you look at Rovelli's paper on the matter.

My own expectation is that, when it comes to the actual results of experiments, such questions are indeed metaphysical and not physical
I don’t use that as an epithet, mind. I’m not allergic to metaphysical concerns

@Semiclassical I agree

But their significance is not “what will the results of my experiments be” but rather what questions and intuitions influence you when constructing experiments in the first place

12:53 AM
@Semiclassical Or cooking up new theories

1:38 AM
lol the tag edit

2:06 AM
@G.Bergeron right. Of course, one still needs such theory to be consistent with what physics we already know. (Hence why I find it hard to be sanguine about “new revolutions” in the absence of experimental evidence.)

vzn
likes interpretations as much in physics as in literature... think they are/ evoke the hidden 9/10ths of the ~iceberg o_O
@G.Bergeron he seems to mainly espouse or have nearly invented relational QM...? iirc slereah said he liked it

@BalarkaSen like my normie response??? ^

user228700
Hello, everyone :-)

Hello Kaumudi. How's the study going?

user228700
It's...going :-)

user228700
I'm so sorry that I never got back to you in that room you made for us. In the end, we decided to submit what little we'd done till then, and got off the hook easily enough.

Why are you apologising? It makes no difference to me.
I am simply a resource that you are able to use, if you choose to. A book doesn't get offended if you don't read it. The Internet doesn't sulk if you don't google.

user228700
4:24 AM
@DawoodibnKareem Yes, but I felt like a bit of a moron for having disappeared for two weeks without notice!

user228700
@DawoodibnKareem Haha, you're right, but still.

It's OK. I figured that you were working hard, and that if you needed me, you'd be in touch.

user228700
Thanks :-)

user228700
Oh, @JohnR: Are you around? I didn't respond to you in Hangouts, because I figured that it would be days until you saw it anyway, so I'd come here someday, instead.

I haven't seen him today. It's still a bit early for him I think.

user228700
4:26 AM
He seems to be here. Must be working.

user228700
Anyway, @DawoodibnKareem: How've you been?

I've been good, actually. Quite busy with work, and finding other ways to fill in my time too.
I haven't hung around in these chat rooms terribly much.

user228700
@DawoodibnKareem Cool! :-)

@KaumudiH Morning :-)

I was fortunate to have noticed your "hello" today,

user228700
4:27 AM
Haha, I see.

user228700
@JohnRennie Morning! :-) Long time!

@KaumudiH yes, my Hangouts notifications are a bit hit and miss

user228700
It's a persistent problem with the app, I believe. The same thing has happened to many of my friends.

@KaumudiH I lose track of time these days :-)

user228700
:-) You're back home, no?

4:28 AM
How are the exams going? Finished yet?
Yes, I got back a couple of weeks ago

user228700
@JohnRennie No! They haven't even started! x'D They're due to start this Friday, and will go up to the 28th of next month!

user228700
@JohnRennie Cool :-)

eek! :-(
@KaumudiH I was quite relieved to find the house was still there :-)

@JohnRennie Does your house sometimes go missing when you visit your mother?

@DawoodibnKareem so far no :-)
But I always feel a bit uneasy leaving the house unoccupied for such a long time - nearly two months.
We had a very cold spell in March, and I could have returned to find the pipes burst and the house flooded.

4:32 AM
Does Chester really get cold enough to burst pipes?

In the end all I found was a monumental pile of junk mail inside the door. And I mean a huuuuge pile!
@DawoodibnKareem it got down to about -10C

@JohnRennie I have no idea whether that's cold enough or not.
@JohnRennie Ah, yes, the traditional British letterbox-in-the-front-door. Far better than actual detached letterboxes out at the gate, like we have in my country.

I left the heating set to come on between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. (the coldest time of day). Without that the pipes would almost certainly have frozen.
@DawoodibnKareem at least this way there isn't an overflowing mailbox advertising to everyone that the house is empty and prime for burglary.
@KaumudiH how is the exam prep going? Are you feeling OK about them?

@JohnRennie Well exactly. Here, if one is going on holiday for a long period, one must ask a friend or a neighbour to clear one's letterbox at regular intervals.

A: What is the $n$ in the formula in Solid Mechanics?

akhmeteli"different values of n represent different modes of buckling" (http://emweb.unl.edu/NEGAHBAN/Em325/21-Buckling%20of%20columns/Buckling%20of%20columns.htm )

^^ A link-only answer? Or is that obvious to people who aren't me?

5:33 AM
@eulB 'twas a good meme
"Well, I take it your formula did not arrive by fax from Heaven." @EmilioPisanty that's probably the greatest thing I have seen this week

6:32 AM
Well, physics would probably be a good deal easier if the angels did send us the occasional fax.

@PrathyushPoduval how was Hong Kong?

Why did you correct your spelling just as I was about to make a snide remark about a giant asafoetida-eating ape?

:-)

I have the impression people from UK like to correct others' English.

6:49 AM
I have the impression you think I'm from UK.

@JohnRennie Quite nice! The return flight made me very tired and sleepy
I had to catch about 3 flights throughout the night.

@PrathyushPoduval Food OK? No disgusting fish sauces? :-)

But the food was, much better than expected
@JohnRennie Ha ha nope, no fish sauces
there was a buddha monastary in lantau islands
the lunch served there was fantastic

Sid
@PrathyushPoduval You went to Hong Kong?
Educational tour?

There was a completely different type of Bun, which was sweet
@Sid Nope, personal

6:53 AM
I come across a lot of notations of dimension in Wikipedia, Hausdorff dimension, box-counting dimension, packing dimension, inductive dimension, Minkowski dimension, etc. I am so confused.

Along with lemon tofu, and very large mushrooms
@Sid returned yesterday
@JohnRennie I will be leaving again day after tomorrow for an olympiad camp for 20days. This time, I know that the food will be bad :P

Do you want to look at the Linux problem before you go?

Yeah, I was thinking about today evening, about 11 am GMT?

Slightly earlier would be better. I'm going to a book club meeting at midday BST so that's 11a.m. GMT.
It should only take 10 minutes.

Okay, what about now?

Sid
6:57 AM
@JohnRennie I am sure he meant 11AM BST. :P

I'll have to search where I've kept that pendrive :P

Now is good. boot up Linux and open a terminal.
You don't need the pen drive.

Oh okay
wait I'll boot into it
@JohnRennie which key do I press again to get the boot order (I entered the BIOS by mistake :P)

F9?

Oh okay, I pressed F10

7:01 AM
But don't you get the boot menu allowing you to select Linux or Windowes?
F9 is for booting from installation media

Nope, it boots into Windows by default. To get the boot options, I had to press some key which I forgot

Press and hold C during the boot? Or possibly the shift key?

F9 it is
I’m bioting into ubuntu

When you've got the terminal open you need to run: lshw -C network
The aim is to see if the Wireless interface is listed

Shit turns out restarting solved the problem

7:07 AM
Huh? The wireless is working now?
Well that was an easy fix :-)

I sent that message from ubuntu
But it’s horrible slow

:-) I wish all network problems were that easy to fix.

There’s a message still waiting to be sent from the ubuntu machine
@JohnRennie haha that’d make your job much easier I presume? :P
test

Click the wifi logo and see if you get the menu like this:

Lemme check the speed of thr connection, it seems very slow
@JohnRennie the connection is legit very slow
@JohnRennie yup I do

7:09 AM
If you click Edit connections you can see the connection details:

Yup, after that?

What you could do is delete the wifi connection.
Then go back to the wifi menu and your home network should show in the list. Clicking it will reconnect to it.
Actually, check your home network shows in the wifi list first.

Yeah it does
Trying reconnection

I wasjust thinking that disconnecting and reconnecting might help ...
... or it might make no difference.

It’s still shows very poor range

7:12 AM
What's the signal strength like in Windows?

Full
3/4 bars
It connected now, with 2 bars

OK, I guess it must be something to do with the Linux wifi driver. I'm afraid I'm out of my depth there. You'd have to ask on the Ubuntu Stack Exchange.
But at least it works. So you should be able to install and use the software you wanted.

Okay
Yeah it should
@JohnRennie this connection speed reminds me of the dark ages

You could always use a network cable while you're installing the software, if it's a big download.

It’s been loading the h bar since that past 5 min or so
@JohnRennie the Ethernet cable did look fine

7:16 AM
Maybe reboot again and seeif that helps?

... if it's the same network card

@JohnRennie Now I don’t see any of wifi network to connect to :P

@JohnRennie it says I have no wlan0

7:23 AM
What does lshw -C network show?

You must have mistyped the command. Try typing just lshw. Expand the terminal to increase its height so you can see all the output.
Remember Linux commands are case sensitive. It must be an uppercase C.

Yeah I wrote it exactly
Just lshw gives me a very long list of things

Ok, so try:
lshw -C network

The first line has a warning, asking me to try it as a superuser

7:33 AM
You can ignore the warning
Does thelist show a wireless interface?

OK, so the wireless interface is there
If you click the wifi logo are any wireless networks shown?

Nope
It’s gone now

It looks as if the RTL8723BE wifi card is problematic in Linux :-(

7:49 AM
Oh sad
I’m feeling very sleepy now, I’ll look over it today evening
Any possible fixes?

There are some fixes in the links I posted.

okay i'll go through it

@Slereah Hell yes.

I should do an evil playthrough of Planescape someday
I wonder if it changes much

@PrathyushPoduval alterntively I have a spare USB WiFi adapter that you'd be welcome to. I've just tested it on Ubuntu 16.04 and it works fine.

8:30 AM
Book 2 is finally here

9:07 AM
@BalarkaSen what?

Well, I take it your formula did not arrive by fax from Heaven. Who "gave you" that information? Reference your sources! — Emilio Pisanty Sep 2 '13 at 14:04

Did I say that at some point? Did I link to it? Recently?
@ACuriousMind ah
The number of five-year-old posts to my name is pretty scary
@ACuriousMind @BalarkaSen oh god, and it's a The Da Vinci Code quote too.

Hahaha

But yeah, I remember being annoyed with OP on that one

You remember being annoyed with the OP on a 5-year-old random PSE question?
Or did you just read what you wrote and you can tell from your own tone that you were annoyed?

9:21 AM
Well
More of the second, probably
But I don't know that you can clearly separate the two

Probably not, memory is a strange thing

Why is S positive here?

Coming to physics chat with the parent account on physics deleted for sockpuppetry. That's a bold move.

Hello please have a look at my question:
0
Q: How does a rigid body constiting of two particles rotate?

Alex K ChenSuppose you have an axis $O$, and two masses $m_1$ and $m_2$, which are joined to $O$ by a rod of $r_1$ and $r_2$, and $m_1, m_2$ are joined by $r$ (rods are maseless and rigid). Now, $\angle m_1Om_2 = \phi$, and you push $m_1$ by tangential force $F_1^T$. They're shown in the picture. Now, as ...

12:27 PM
@JohnRennie Oh thanks, but I think I'd buy one. It's very cheap anyways. Which one should I buy?

1:21 PM
@JohnRennie It seems the computer clock problem blue was talking about has happened to me too
in windows
It randomly went GMT (Though time zone still showed +5:30 UTC), but i was able to change it back

2:38 PM
@Slereah the new proof of the PMT has too many holes

2:54 PM
@0celo7 Singularities are holes
It makes sense

the thing I'm stuck on now is pretty stupid -- I can't show that the main operator is actually continuous
they give an incorrect proof

If I wanted someone to sanity check my work, would I ask it here or as a question on main Physics?
Also, Hi! I'm new.

we don't check work on the main site

@Green Welcome! If it's really just about checking your work, then it would be off-topic on main, but feel free to ask here - if someone wants to/can help you with it, they will.

@ACuriousMind Thanks.

3:14 PM
@JohnR: Oops, I'm sorry I disappeared before! My laptop died, and I had (have) much studying to do!

user228700
To answer your question: yeah, I feel OK about most of them, except Chemistry. I'm real worried about Chem.

If the weather in the UK is like it is here, I suspect John is currently melting due to an early summer outbreak ;)

user228700
Hey! Is it that hot there?

Well, it's ~25°C here in Germany and not a single cloud in sight, which feels rather unusual for mid-April

user228700
What's it usually like at this time?

3:17 PM
Rainy and hovering around 15°C would feel like a normal April

user228700
Ah, wow.

Then again, the first week was unusually cold, so maybe it averages out ;P
I went from my winter jacket straight to not needing a jacket at all when going outside

user228700
Haha, OK :-) April is usually nice and toasty around these parts.

Mr Eliot disagrees

user228700
Oh, hey, man! :-)

user228700
3:25 PM
How's it going? Are your exams over?

Which exams
The admissions are in like 3 weeks

user228700
@BalarkaSen Boards.

user228700
Or did you let me know that they're over, and I forgot, and I feel like a doofus...

user228700
@BalarkaSen Ah, cool. Good luck! :-)

The German weather has 3 states: too cold, too hot and rainy. It switches between them without transient. This mid-apr is very special.

3:38 PM
Hello, bumping my question:
1
Q: How does a rigid body constiting of two particles rotate?

Alex K ChenSuppose you have an axis $O$, and two masses $m_1$ and $m_2$, which are joined to $O$ by a rod of $r_1$ and $r_2$, and $m_1, m_2$ are joined by $r$ (rods are maseless and rigid). Now, $\angle m_1Om_2 = \phi$, and you push $m_1$ by tangential force $F_1^T$. They're shown in the picture. Now, as ...

@AlexKChen Please don't do that - if you think the question is of particular interest to someone here, ping them with it, but don't simply post your question to draw attention, especially not periodically. Our site is not meant to deliver answers in real-time and you need to be a little patient.

@KaumudiH Oh they're over

user228700
Cool :-) I hope they were fine.

Physics was not very good, but surprisingly chemistry compensated for that.

user228700
Ooh, interesting.

3:48 PM
@peterh pfft. Come to England where we can get all that (and more!) within the space of half an hour, if you pick the right day :P

@0celo7 depends on what you're sucking at or on

Turns out we do have a physical infinity, and the reason why a lot of things gone wrong:
Speculation in market systems
This and the increase in liquidity due to central bank lending, lead to capital and money being increase potentially without limit, such that it may no longer in correspondance to the actual amount of resources that is there
The result: bubbles

5:39 PM
Please let me know whats wrong in defining a centre of charge analogous to centre of mass?
One of my classmates was getting the right results today by using "center of charge" trick. (trick: because nothing is mentioned in any book about centre of charge)

5:51 PM
what is "center of charge" how is it defined?

6:15 PM
[Random]
It occured to me that malicious companies are actually functioning like a heat engine
In the absence of suitable regulation, whenever a malicious company is taxed or penalised, it can easily transfer that cost to the consumers
and then maintain profit
This is very similar to heat flowing downhill from a heat sink, except when the hot bath "dries out" the flow stops

tl;dr: You may use a center of charge exactly analogous to a center of mass, there's nothing "wrong" with it at all.

which is very different from the thermodynamic analogue where if there is no temperature gradient, the heat flow stops
so... what is the financial analogue to entropy...

@Secret $\dfrac{\sum Q_ix_i}{\sum Q_i}$ (Please ping while replying to me ...or else I dont get to know.)
@ACuriousMind Oh okay, consider a triangle with charges 2q at top and q and q at other two vertices.
How many dipoles do you think exist @ACuriousMind?
(On-topic (= related to centre of charge))

@Abcd I don't understand the question.

@ACuriousMind Give me a minute

6:25 PM
Take all the time you want, I'm not in a hurry here ;P

Question: Find net dipole of this system of charges. Charges are placed at vertices of equilateral triangle.
Teacher's approach: 2q = q + q, one dipole due to -q and one +q, another dipole due to another -q and and another - q . Finally take the components and do all that easy stuff.
Classmates' approach: Found the centre of charge of the two --qs and then easily found the net dipole
@ACuriousMind Teacher's approach doesn't look good to me. (Both of them got same answer)
Like, how can you break 2q into q and q that way

@Abcd Well, there is no difference between a "single" charge at a point and two charges of half the charge at the same point.

another +q*
@ACuriousMind But each +q has two dipoles with each -q . SO there should be total of $4$ dipoles. That's my concern.

Oh, if they didn't consider all these four, then that definitely sounds sketchy to me

@Secret My classmates told me that lone pair delocalisation only is free mesomeric effect. Do you think a molecular orbital for charge delocalisation will be formed between the sp hybrid orbital of O and the p orbital of that carbocation?
@ACuriousMind Yes, that's what I was worried about too.

vzn
6:39 PM
@Secret there is some new research in this area in econophysics about company linkages/ interdependences/ brittleness wrt networks, but not nec wrt "malicious" companies... also wealth inequality has been related to temperature/ heat distribution etc.

@Abcd I don't think the sp2 lone pair orbital is in the correct orientation to overlap with the vacant p orbital of the carbon

@Secret Its sp3 I guess.
2 sigma bonds + 2 lone pairs = sp3
@Secret there can be a sort of hyperconjugation don't you think?

@Abcd well, it is sort of possible as arrow pushing will suggest, but O is quite electronegative, thus I don't expect a stablisation of C+ by O will be improtant.
(but again, I cannot be sure without a calculation)
The name sounds very misleading though, as mesomeric effect requires a conjugated system, and a hyperconjugation between O and single bonded C+ is not conjugated

@Secret you aren't considering the "free" behind mesomeric effect.
that free might be having some significance

that's a terminology not used anywhere in the literature, nevertheless
I never heard of it before this chat

vzn
7:24 PM
@Secret strange coincidence just ran into this, hes the creator of the bell video extremefinitism.com/background ... it sounds bizarre but there is a concept in math "ultrafinitism"... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultrafinitism maybe not coincdentally hes a "staunch atheist"...

7:49 PM
@JohnRennie got another pot of gulasch going

8:31 PM
hmm, has arxix changed their author search recently

@Semiclassical yeah I noticed it this morning

i'm not exactly pleased with it yet

::realizes he hasn't been on arXiv in months::

@ACuriousMind How are you doing research?

@0celo7 I'm not?

8:36 PM
lol

Well, that was a brief conversation :P

to follow in the spirit of the starboard, it was a real quantum leap of a conversation

@ACuriousMind well if you're not doing research what is there to talk about
can you prove this bilinear form is bounded?

@0celo7 non-research physics, food, video games, beer, books, life and all the rest?

I'm making a giant pot of gulash right now
It's going to be amazing

8:45 PM
"giant" as in people coming over or as in "my food for the next three days"?
Or simply as "an American portion"? :P

food for the next 3 days
I'm not spending this much for beef that other people would eat :P

Sid
@0celo7 your food will get spoiled...

it'd better be amazing, then :P

@Sid refrigerators exist here
@Semiclassical it is amazing
just tasted it
great balance of flavors

I guess the question is whether it'll remain amazing by the end of the three days. But you're the one who's in a position to assess that.

8:48 PM
it gets better over time
the flavors mature

Sid
@0celo7 I curse you for talking about food when I am hungry. :P

Yeah, Gulasch leftovers are pretty good

you get these delicious fuzzy balls after a few days

Uhhh...the "fuzzy" stuff is mold ;P

if you're really lucky you can get some of this
gonna have it with some pasta and sour cream
goooooood stuff
@ACuriousMind Did you get Far Cry 5?

8:52 PM
@0celo7 Nope - would've had to get Windows again for that and it didn't look that amazing

get Windows again?
say it ain't so
you don't play games any more?

I'm currently eagerly awaiting Pillars of Eternity 2 which will be released early in May
@0celo7 Sure I do - but after semi-voluntarily switching to Linux, I discovered most of the stuff I want to play also runs on Linux these days
Around 2/3rds of my Steam library run natively, and some of the rest runs just fine under Wine

semi-voluntarily?
I've been thinking about replaying TW3, but it hasn't even been a year since the first time

@0celo7 Did you forget about the whole ordeal where I upgraded my RAM and thereby mysteriously destroyed my Windows installation or did you just not catch it when I talked about it here?

@ACuriousMind I remember your RAM going kaput but why would that break Windows

9:05 PM
The RAM is fine, but Windows refused to start (both with the new and the old one)
No idea what happened there

@ACuriousMind I had a similar sounding problem on an old laptop of mine - apparently it was something wrong with the motherboard. Doesn't help at all, but you're the only other person I've heard of who's had a similar problem

In any case, since I didn't have a Windows install on hand I just installed Debian and it's been running fine ever since

Huh
Here’s the stuff, doesn’t look as good in picture form as irl gyazo.com/a1c53c2c98826314cd3ba13d3181134a

Yeah...I hope that tastes much better than it looks ;)
@Mithrandir24601 Hm. Well, since I haven't noticed any problems since them I kinda doubt it's a hardware problem, but I guess I will never know
One of these days I'll have to get a new motherboard and graphics card anyway, but currently all those crypto miners are hogging the cards :P

@ACuriousMind It was also the only problem I ever had on mine as well (except for the screen breaking when a suitcase fell on it, which I don't really count)

9:26 PM
@Mithrandir24601 Well, shared sorrow is half a sorrow, I guess ;P

@ACuriousMind I would agree, but I since got a new laptop ;)

But I'm not really mourning the loss of my Windows - as I said, most things work just fine and I'm getting familiar with terminals again

@ACuriousMind Yeah, I didn't mourn it either - Linux is nice :)

Gross

9:42 PM
