12:10 AM
@Phase What question?
@SirCumference lol
@SirCumference GR. He likes GR :P

@ACuriousMind But the only application for GR is astrophysics...

@SirCumference Who said anything about applications?

@ACuriousMind Well then it's just math, not physics...

As an analogy, the main application for number theory is cryptography - that doesn't mean all number theorists like cryptography.
@SirCumference It's close to math, sure. What's the problem?

@ACuriousMind I dunno, it surprised me that he was studying physics (IIRC) instead of math, considering he seems more interested in the maths rather than the study of the universe

12:22 AM
@SirCumference Once again, you recall wrongly.
He's studying nuclear engineering and math, noth physics.

@ACuriousMind Common trend of mine, I guess
@ACuriousMind But why study GR specifically if you aren't interested in how the universe works? It's like taking a Physics class that incorporates calculus, instead of taking calculus
He could've just studied the math necessary for GR

@SirCumference Where did "interest in how the universe works" so suddenly come from?

@ACuriousMind Well, GR describes how a universe works, does it not?

@ACuriousMind pls, Courant
I'm assuming the t is silent

@SirCumference Only if you really want to condense it down to a soundbite that doesn't actually mean anything :P

12:33 AM
@ACuriousMind All right, what else could GR be good for?

@0ßelö7 Am I French?! No idea how that's pronounced

@ACuriousMind Well, whom should I ask
@SirCumference you're the only one demanding it be good for anything

@0ßelö7 Wiktionary, for instance :P

and that's a very loose "good", I don't think understanding astrophysics does me any good either

@0ßelö7 I mean, saying "I study GR for the math" seems analogous to "I study newtonian mechanics for the math"

12:35 AM
@ACuriousMind that's the German one
@SirCumference that's reasonable too. Lots of math has come from trying to understand the Laplace equation and the many-body problem

@0ßelö7 ...it has the IPA of the French as wellas a sound bite

the IPA is helpful, can't get the soundbite to play

@SirCumference You seem to have this weird idea where one can only study physical theories "for the math" or "for an application". Why can one not just study them for their own sake?

@0ßelö7 How could you use the many-body problem if you're not analyzing physical bodies?

@0ßelö7 In case you want to learn these languages, I recommend Assimil as the best course. Book with CDs.

12:37 AM
@ACuriousMind after some deliberations, I have decided that i.gyazo.com/bcb7b1567fb099e68c94518bb15c41d8.png is the least offensive to all involved. Those who like physics will understand it and those who don't won't be offended by a physicist proof
@SirCumference what

@Jasper I think he's just trying to pronounce a mathematician's name, not learn the language :P

@ACuriousMind I am translating a French book and multiple French papers. Knowing French would be helpful.

@ACuriousMind I've never met someone who studies physics but isn't interested in physics...

@SirCumference I'm not disinterested in physics

@0ßelö7 Let me give you the link to the product then...

12:39 AM
@SirCumference You have a very narrow idea of what constitutes "interest in physics".

@0ßelö7 How are we defining physics? I always thought it refers to the study of the physical universe.

That is one book and one MP3 CD.

@SirCumference idk, can you coherently state your objection pls

@0ßelö7 ??
I was just wondering what part of physics you're interested in

@ACuriousMind If I send you 10 slides, can you please give an estimate of how long you think it would take me to get through them?
In my mind 1 minute, but I know that a 600 slide presentation would not fit in one hour
So something is wrong there

12:44 AM
@0ßelö7 To do that, we need to make many assumptions.

@0ßelö7 Sure, but it will be wildly off ;) The best way to judge the length of the presentation is to do a test run

But that's what physicists do, make assumptions to make approximations. =D

@Jasper none of us are physicists

@0ßelö7 ACM is, isn't he?

@ACuriousMind says he is, but c'mon

12:46 AM
@0ßelö7 I think A Curious Mind is. =D

JR is

JR is a chemist

@SirCumference I seem to exist in limbo between mathematics and physics :P

@ACuriousMind I thought you were in industrial physics?

I watched the movie A Beautiful Mind, and now there is a mod called A Curious Mind. My friend suggested I call myself A Dirty Mind, LOL.

12:47 AM
@ACuriousMind talking to a wall, a rubber duck, my cat via facetime, or some poor human?

@0ßelö7 dmckee?

@SirCumference are you high?
2

@SirCumference What is it with you and thinking I'm in industry? We had this exact same conservation a few days ago.
Sep 1 at 12:54, by Sir Cumference
@ACuriousMind I thought you were in industry all this time...

@SirCumference he's not here right now

@ACuriousMind Wow...I think I might be losing it

12:47 AM
@ACuriousMind Maybe you can do a double major? =D

@0ßelö7 He's in the chat now, just not active

he is afk

@0ßelö7 Ok, Slereah?

@0ßelö7 Poor human or rubber duck works best for me

The guys in the TeX chat room love ducks.
They even wrote a TeX package for drawing ducks

12:52 AM
@SirCumference You certainly seem to have a sub-par long term memory for what the people in this chat are doing with their lives :P
Which could just mean you don't care about us :'(

rekt

@ACuriousMind Perhaps it's a bit concerning...

I still don't know why he decided to attack me

@ACuriousMind I do care about you, @ACM
All right, I'm too tired to think properly

Ah, there it is - you really should sleep more

12:54 AM
@ACuriousMind I try. It just doesn't come ;-;
It's starting to affect me in classes

@ACuriousMind czech emale

@ACuriousMind I think your pic makes you look very fierce. =D

@SirCumference Insomnia? If it's really affecting you to the point of making you too tired to think you should perhaps see a physician (not a physicist :P) about that

@0ßelö7 I need to copy your spelling.

@ACuriousMind says the vampire...
@ACuriousMind Did you understand my encoded message?

12:56 AM
@0ßelö7 My sleep cycle is just shifted, not shortened :P

My sleep is completely random.

@ACuriousMind I've been thinking about doing that, though I dunno what a physicist could really do
@0ßelö7 I thought he was a robot?

a vampire robot

Robot brain is less damagable than human brain.

@0ßelö7 'fraid not. How much of this stuff is supposed to be new to the audience, and how much a reminder?

12:59 AM
@ACuriousMind You didn't understand "check email"?

@0ßelö7 Oh, that
I didn't consider that "encoded" :P
I've already opened the mail

what did you consider encoded then???

I thought the encoded message was in the email. =D

@0ßelö7 I had no idea, so I said I didn't understand the encoded message!

oh

1:01 AM
czech emale is certainly coding theory, but not cryptography. =D

@ACuriousMind slides 1 and 2 should be familiar to everyone studying math, but past that, who knows
I'd wager my advisor has seen this before, but the new profs said they hadn't seen the construction

@0ßelö7 Can I ask what you are presenting on?

@Jasper the old 1953 construction of heat kernels on closed manifolds
with some of the proofs rescued from obscure 1950s journals and 1970s french books

Ah, no wonder useful to learn French.

@0ßelö7 I think you might get by with a minute each for the first two slides then, but should plan on doing 2-3 for the following ones
Maybe 5 if the audience is prone to asking questions, that's difficult to predict

1:05 AM
@0ßelö7 Anyway, would it be better if you just write on the board? I dunno.

@Jasper doubtful

I really hate slides. =D

@ACuriousMind does it look good though? No obvious stupid stuff?
@Jasper why?
I hate whiteboards. I'm a giant and can only reach the top half of them

@0ßelö7 I hate whiteboards. I love blackboards. I hate slides. Reason? I am old-fashioned.

@0ßelö7 Nothing that would be obviously stupid to me, no

1:10 AM
@ACuriousMind Is "Physicist Proof" derogatory?

@0ßelö7 It is just a little humorous to me. =D

@0ßelö7 Not unless in the way you say it "physicist" drips with disdain ;)
2

@ACuriousMind no, I think physicist proofs are neat
@ACuriousMind If I have a group $\Gamma$ acting on my manifold in a nice way, and I write the group action from the left, should I write the orbit space as $\Gamma\\ M$ or just $M/\Gamma$
holy shit what is that

@0ßelö7 You typed `\\`, which is a line break
Unless it is actually relevant at some point that the action/quotient is from the left, I'd just write $M/\Gamma$:

Ok
@ACuriousMind what did I want to type?

1:23 AM
@0ßelö7 \backslash

Oh :P

2:11 AM
Ya know, it gets so boring on SE that sometimes I look forward to bad questions
Know what I mean?
Just ones that are so bad, they're kind of funny

2 hours later…
4:17 AM
@0ßelö7 I'm a physical chemist. We're like ordinary chemists but with more muscles.

@JohnRennie Thank goodness you're finally here!
I have a question for you,

Morning :-)

Good morning john :)
In the British monarchy, if the king only has a daughter, how come her husband is not the king once she becomes Queen?

Her husband becomes the consort or something like that

4:22 AM
I have a question too
Is England your city?

And the Crown passes to the oldest child, independent of sex? Or the male comes first?
@BalarkaSen Lol

@BernardoMeurer The law has actually just changed. It used to be the eldest son unless there were no sons in which case it went to the eldest daughter. Now it's the eldest child.

I see
Dope

Though since Charles had two sons and William's two eldest are sons it won't make any difference for another generation yet.
@BalarkaSen am I missing a dank meme here? :-)

@JohnRennie I did recommend you to watch the music video of "It's Everyday Bro"

4:27 AM
You think Charles will ever get the Crown? Elizabeth is a darn highlander
@JohnRennie You're missing the dankest of memes

That's three minutes and forty seconds of my life that I'll never get back

But after that England will be your city

You know it's Nick Crompton and my collars stay poppin - absolute masterpieces of poetic genius

@JohnRennie This is if you wan't to see all the dank memes in that video

I'll make a note in my diary to watch that if the opportunity arises e.g. if I'm seriously constipated or get a life sentence in prison.

4:36 AM
@Bernardo This is underrated man
It upsets me how underrated it is

@BalarkaSen the Russian lady is scary

what did she say

She was in a meeting and I apologized for interrupting but the dude just stormed out and she told me to come in and sit
I told her who I was and then she said not to ask my question then even though I said it would be quick
Then we spent 10 minutes trying to schedule a meeting

lol

I tried to asked my question but she refused every time.

4:41 AM
oh lord

She doesn't understand the concept of being in class
Then she got mad at me because she thought I was trying to interrupt the meeting but really I was just telling her that I literally have class from 9 to 3:30 on MWF
Then she called the dude who left to figure out where he was but he just went to the bathroom
So now I have a meeting on Wednesday during the representation theory class
🤷🏻‍♂️
Complete shitshow

I am sure this little Russian experience is a good autobiography material

Oh fuck. It's actually scheduled during the analysis seminar
Looooool
@BalarkaSen I also offered to just email it to her but she said she wouldn't read it

lol why
that's nuts

"No time"
You saw the question. Literally three lines
Should be a yes/no and a book name. I know it's true, I just can't find the proof
The elliptic counterpart is ridiculously hard to prove
I don't think the hyperbolic case will be easy
But it should be well known
Night

4:52 AM
Now running Firefox 57
Looks great

1 hour later…
5:57 AM
Hi, everyone :-)

Morning. Shouldn't you be doing assignments? :-)

I should :-)
Soon. Before that, I must visit that office to collect my drivers' license.
@BernardoMeurer Aw, man, I said I was sorry! :-(
@SirCumference WHAT IS THIS?! x'D

@Kaumudi.H I can't help but poking fun at you :P

:-)
That picture, sheesh! x'D
@JohnR: Did you see my comments about the picture that you made last night?

@Kaumudi.H Yes :-) Though I think Sir Cumference's picture was better :-)

6:03 AM
I only saw his picture a few minutes ago and I'm afraid I agree!
I wonder how you and Balarka emerged in the picture!

It only occurred to me to put you on a motorbike at the last minute, so I was rushing to do it before you quit for the day.
So I did a pretty rough job of it.

Ah x'D It was still better than anything I could've achieved!

The wonders of Photoshop :-)
It's easy to do, though you might have better things to do with your time!

@JohnRennie As it happens, I do, haha :-) Even though I haven't started doing them assignments yet, I am currently doing something even more important than that! Attempting to figure out which book to read next.

Use GIMP for a FOSS solution!
@JohnRennie Firefox 57 is just amazing

6:08 AM
@BernardoMeurer I guess browsers don't amaze me that much these days

Are you running Chrome/Chromium?

I use Chrome because it works pretty well most of the time. I'm sure Firefox works pretty well most of the time as well.

Just look at this magnificent pile:

Download Firefox Nightly and give it a try
Look at CPU and memory usage

I couldn't be more excited!!

6:09 AM
I use IE 11 at work for various compatibility reasons, and that works pretty well most of the time too.

@Kaumudi.H Get Zizek's In Defense of Lost Causes

You don't want to read anything by Ayn Rand - trust me on this.
It is pretentious crap.

@BernardoMeurer I will look it up, thanks!

Or do I mean sententious? Probably both.

@JohnRennie Do you care to elaborate, please? _/\_

6:10 AM
@JohnRennie Try it, really, give it a shot
It's amazeballs
Written with R U S T

Round about the beginning of the 20th century there was a surge of interest in (misunderstanding) Nietzsche's work.
You got lots of people writing books that were basically about how to be an ubermensch.
Ayn Rand falls neatly into that genre.

Ayn Rand is the untermensch

I have no idea what Ayn Rand was like personally, but her books are a very poor guide for living your life.

Right, right. I have encountered this argument many, many times. Like I said before, I'm only reading it so that I will have read it, and understood (or, perhaps failed to understand) what the hype is about.

If you're going to read one Ayn Rand book I would have guessed Atlas Shrugged is her most popular book.

6:15 AM
Read Schopenhauer and Wittgenstein
Instead of wasting your time with Ayn Rand

@JohnRennie Ah, yes, unfortunately, my sister could only get her hands on this one.

@BernardoMeurer actually Nietzsche is well worth reading.

@JohnRennie Oh? (I didn't think that you'd read any book not belonging to the SF genre :-)

Though I find philosophy books to be generally pretty dull.

@JohnRennie I'm yet to devote time to read Nietzsche, I have a queue of signed Zizek books that need reading

6:19 AM
@Kaumudi.H Given how much time you'll spend reading textbooks over the next few years SF is a pretty good way of relaxing :-)

As well as Stalin and Hitler's biographies
I find it hard to enjoy fiction

@JohnRennie :-) Hmm.

Also, I'm currently reading Descartes meditations, which consumes quite a lot of time

@Kaumudi.H When I was a student reading SF was my way of chilling after overheating my brain trying to understand quantum mechanics :-)

Right, right :-)

6:20 AM
Since they require reading on meditation, and then proceding to meditate over what you've read for a whole day, only to read the next meditation the day after

Oh, BTW, I am going to reward your work, @Sir by posting the picture that you made as my status on WhatsApp to announce (to those who might care) that I have acquired my license, at last!

I'm currently reading:
And I'm really enjoying it, even though it is unlikely to make any great contributions to the advancement of literature.

But, to be honest, I quite like the Meditations, although the degree of skepticism Descartes uses is borderline counterproductive, and yields to some useless deadlocks. Also, his religiousness leads to some unsatisfying answers on the lines of "because God"

@BernardoMeurer The last sentence of your comment has me suddenly quite demotivated to try to read it at any point.
@JohnRennie An American ghost story, hmm. Cool! :-)

@Kaumudi.H That will be the case with any philosopher of his time, it's ignorant to mark them as useless for it. There is a lot of meaningful discussion in Descartes Meditations, and his search for an unshakeable basis for science is very interesting

6:25 AM
@Kaumudi.H it's a really interesting idea. The conflict between a ghost hunter and a ghost who doesn't want to be hunted.

@BernardoMeurer Oh, no, I haven't marked them useless, only that this puts me off a little.

And it's nicely written. The characters are plausible and there aren't any plot holes (so far0

An unshakable basis for science-I s'pose I must read it to understand.

@Kaumudi.H Ah, well, it should put you off; I'd be disappointed if it didn't
@Kaumudi.H Yes, you must. Read Meditations 1, 2, and 3 to have a good idea of it
and you don't need to do it in the intended way (one a day, meditating over it after reading, Aquinas style), you can just read it like normal articles

I have this pile to finish before I move on to others!

6:28 AM
Although I must say I quite like going to the beach and reading Descartes :)

@BernardoMeurer :-) That doesn't sound half bad, actually.
@JohnRennie Nice :-) Yes, that does seem interesting.

@Kaumudi.H is that your headphone adaptor at the left of the photo? It's still working then?

Yes, and yes! :-) Huzzah!

@JohnRennie Buy me a good DAC :P

@BernardoMeurer I thought you'd bought one yourself, not a few months ago...

6:32 AM
@Kaumudi.H A DAC? Not me

Huh, who was it, then?

@BernardoMeurer If I send you a DAC American customs will intercept it and bang on a large import duty :-(

@JohnRennie That is true :(
I'm sad that I left Europe without having had a chance to go see you

I note that Dragonfly Black's are pretty cheap on eBay at the moment ...

@Bernardo: Didn't you buy this one?

6:34 AM
@Kaumudi.H No, I was considering

Ah.

@JohnRennie As much as I'd like a good DAC with Linux support, I have a more pressing issue at the moment. The carpal tunnel syndrome that is developing on my left wrist has become a major nuisance to my work
Meaning I need a good, ergonomic keyboard
Because right now, after a few hours of work, it hurts so much that two painkillers make it barely manageable

Ouch :-(

I wan't to get an Ergodox or variation thereof
With heavy-weight keys like the Cherry MX Greens

6:53 AM
@BernardoMeurer Do you have experience with Arduino or Raspberry Pi. I'm thinking about how to go about learning it. I need to control sending and receiving wave pulses using it (especially UDP) for a certain project.

Anonymous
BTW Hi!

Anonymous
How's life in your new college?

@Blue I have experience with both. A lot with Arduino, medium with RPi

Anonymous
@BernardoMeurer Cool. Any advice on how to get started?

If you want to mess with UDP an RPi might be better suited due to already having networking. Although with it the task will probably boil down to some linux networking tool. An Arduino with a networking shield might be more raw, and probably harder to do, but most likely a lot more fun
Buy an Arduino starter kit with an Arduino Uno, and get cracking with projects. O'Reilly has a book "Arduino Cookbook" which is well regarded
Of course my general recommendation is that you just find something you are interested in doing, set it as your goal and try doing it, learning what you need in the process

6:57 AM
@blue why do you need an RPi to play with UDP? Just use your laptop.

@Blue Pretty good, I only do GE classes this term though, which makes my life quite boring. I'm taking a job soon though which will probably make things quite active once again
@JohnRennie I'm guessing he needs some form of embedded solution

Anonymous
I see. Does this coursera.org/specializations/iot look like a good start (in terms of theory) ? And yeah...I guess I need to buy a basic Arduino kit from Amazon or something

@Blue speaking of which, you need to give me you address so I can post the disk on Monday. Have you got a Facebook account?

Anonymous
@JohnRennie I'm not on Facebook currently. Can we talk over mail?

@Blue Sure, that seems nice
@Blue I hope you mean email

6:59 AM
@BernardoMeurer lol

Done!

I'm sending you a mail. Just a few minutes

@JohnRennie I have a story you might find funny
My friend is currently interning at a bank in Rio. It's a smaller bank that grew a lot a while ago and is now starting to stablish itself. They mostly focus on operating inside the favelas, where generally banking service is subpar
They needed a developer to work on their Blockchain and ICO, and so he recommended me to join their team
I had an interview a few days ago over Skype with their CEO and some other people.
I am now the CTO and my friend's boss

@BernardoMeurer Wut?

pissed ?

Have you ever taken a piss in Bangladesh
Urinated

I've never been to Bangladesh.

lol

7:11 AM
Shit man
Go piss there
It seems fairly close
I've literally went to France just to piss
The only time I've been in France was to piss there

Anonymous
@BernardoMeurer Doesn't seem like a very exciting reason to visit Bangladesh

Anonymous
:P

Anonymous
Do you have any grudge against those two countries?

Oh, I don't have a blacklist, no. I just have a whitelist, and everyone else deserves to be pissed on
As it happens neither France not Bangladesh are whitelisted

Anonymous
Well, I don't have USA on my white list. :P

7:14 AM
Come and piss here, you can sleep on my living room if you shower at least once a day

Anonymous
@BernardoMeurer Oh, that reminds me that I was consider a transfer in my 2nd or 3rd year of UG. If I get into an UC we might meet. :P

Are you rich?

@Blue yes, I've got the address. I'll let you knew when I've posted the disk. I'll include a USB key with the Win10 install image I use, just in case the weird Start button thing is related to your install image.

Anonymous
@BernardoMeurer Poor as hell

Then an UC is out of reach; they offer no aid whatsoever

7:16 AM
@BernardoMeurer rich students don't use E5410 laptops :-)

@BernardoMeurer That sounds bad. Then I need to look for some other college

@JohnRennie I wouldn't say I'm poor, and I use a similar laptop. The thing is I just don't get money from my parents apart for food :P
@Blue All Ivy League schools give a lot of aid, alas they are extremely competitive

@BernardoMeurer Trying to maintain a good profile in college just for that. lol

Anonymous
@JohnRennie Thanks :)

That sounds great

@BernardoMeurer your laptop is a lot better than Blue's!

Colleges here like Indians, so you're in a good position :P
@JohnRennie My laptop is amazing
Although the performance per Kg is not :P
But Hardware support on Linux is flawless, which is what I truly care about

As it happens my niece has just phoned. The screen on her laptop has broken. Exactly how and why it broke remains mysterious. Oh well, I'll dig another laptop out of the pile for her.

7:21 AM
Being your niece must be amazing
"Uncle John, I need another laptop"
Gets a laptop
Well, to be fair
Pretty much everyone on the h-bar that needed a laptop got one too

She's a major non-nerd. She isn't interested in laptops or phones as long as they work. Quite disappointing really.

So we're all John's nieces?
@JohnRennie You clearly failed her
Take me as your rightful heir
Let us rule together

I'll update my will to leave you all my semi-working laptops.

YES
I will finally have a bunch of machines to run distcc and compile things quickly
and move over to Gentoo
Blimey, having moved to America is destroying me
My alcohol consumption hasn't been this low since I was 15
I'm down to less than one bottle a week
This is against human rights

7:55 AM
@JohnRennie My plan was to use Arduino/Raspberry Pi to create a home automation system for Wireless Charging. I need to detect the location of a device and send directed energy packets. I'll probably need to buy a lot of sensors, antenna and other stuff though. The main problem would be the physics part....i.e. preventing energy loss and generating enough power of atleast 0.01W. (Phones need around 1W) I might use capacitors to store energy. But I haven't worked out that plan as yet.

Anonymous
The latest design was made my UW Washington. But they used Wifi to charge devices and it generated a meagre $10^{-6}$ W at 2.4 GHz.

Anonymous
I will probably not couple it with a WiFi source, so that I can send more energy.

@Blue That seems like an ambitious project

Anonymous
@BernardoMeurer Ya. It's gonna take time. But I'll try my best. I'm lucky that a physics professor at my university is willing to help me out and lend his lab for experimental purpose. :)
