12:00 AM
What this means is that I'd get the picture of how to teach that subject (and perhaps learn things as well), without the issues that would arise from putting me in front of the class and teaching, having never taught before and the students (supposedly) get help from someone who deals with things similar to this on a regular basis

can someone freeze this chatroom? It's not needed, and I'd rather the discussion there stopped.

@heather If it's offensive or something, you could flag it?
anyway, I'm off to bed - night!

the most offensive thing already was flagged and the flag was approved by myself just now, which brought the whole thing to my attention.
@Mithrandir24601 good night =)

Q: interpretation of the wavefunction in terms of classical harmonic oscillators

vznthe following paragraph from the book The Meaning of Quantum Theory, Jim Baggott, Oxford University Press, 1992 p26 leads me to this question. consider N ("independently interacting") particles with 3N coordinates x,y,z in space. the quantum wavefunction is expressed in terms of (a superposition ...

2:13 AM
I just wrote a question but
It's so short and I feel like I may not have added enough to prevent it from getting flagged as just piss-poor
any tips >_>

in Discussion between Reddevil and Alfred Centauri, 58 mins ago, by Alfred Centauri
To be sure, the removed comment is memorialized on my profile page (either you get it or you don't). @heather, quick question: did the obvious fact that reddevil blatantly lied to the community give you pause - any pause at all? This is important.

3:06 AM
Hi, everybody.

3:21 AM
@DanielSank really quite in the bar tonight - must be the new one on the corner with the 10^500 for one happy string hour special

@0celo7 Again changed your name? What's going on? O_o

@heather I like the basic idea of forming study groups but formalizing / advertising it on the main site is harmful as we can't guarantee the attendance of students/teachers. Such study groups have already been formed. Not once, but many times.

@Blue what?

Anonymous
@0celo7 Wasn't it 0celone7 or something yesterday?

Sid
No. It was 0celo7 yesterday too.
I think it was changed after he changed his avatar

@BalarkaSen Is the Schaum series good for Complex Analysis?

I love that book.
It's where I learnt basics of complex analysis

Anonymous
Thanks for the feedback. I'm ordering it on Amazon then

We are having four different math professors teaching 4 different topics. Difficult to cope up :P

you know, there are some unironically good engineering textbooks on mathematical topics
Schuam is basically for engineers but I like the content a lot.
Piskunov is also for engineers but it's an absolute Russian classic

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen Really?

4:48 AM
yeah

Anonymous
It's not mentioned anywhere on it

Oh, not officially
I am not sure if I like any of the intro complex analysis textbooks mathematicians actually use out there

Ah, makes sense

@Blue what are they teaching

@BalarkaSen Complex Analysis, Real Analysis (Multivariable), Vector Calculus and Differential Calculus

But well, if I only read the minimal stuff that they teach in class I could get away easily. But I want to do them well.

I see, OK.
I need to run to school now; I'll talk later.

Biya!

Sid
@BalarkaSen your school is at 10:30 AM?
that's too late IMO

More concerned about the fact that it's Saturday.

Sid
Oh, Saturday is a working day around these parts
(For schools, that is)

Anonymous
5:06 AM
@DawoodibnKareem In some Indian schools, Saturday is a working day. In my school Saturday used to be considered a holiday though.

Anonymous
If I am not wrong, Friday and Saturday is considered as the weekend in the Arab world.

Q: Question about the physical meaning of tensors: why are they used in physics?

StarBucKI know that tensors are object we use in general relativity to describe phenomenon. They have the property to have the same expression in various coordinates systems. For example if I take : $\partial_{x_i} A_{j} - \partial_{x_j} A_i$ it is a tensor because if I change the system of coordinates ...

@Blue That's true, but if I am not wrong, India is not in the Arab world. Unless that pesky Continental Drift has kicked in again.

Anonymous
@DawoodibnKareem What? When did I say that "India is in the Arab world" ?

Anonymous
In India Sunday was/is always a holiday

Sid
5:37 AM
Well, India is geographically closer to the Arab world anyway

Anonymous
@Sid That means nothing. "closer" w.r.t what?

Sid
Europe/Americas/Australia, etc.

Anonymous
USA is "close" to Russia. But their culture and geography is a lot different.

Anonymous
@Sid OK.

Anonymous
5:45 AM
@Sid Actually you should remove Europe from that list. Several European countries are closer to Arab countries than India. Turkey is thought to be the "bridge" by some.

Sid
By Europe, I mean anything West from Germany. :P

Anonymous
@Sid Doesn't make sense.

Sid
What doesn't?
Turkey is geographically and even culturally to some extent close to the Arab world

Anonymous
Defining only the countries lying to the West of Germany as Europe.

Sid
It's not strictly that.

Anonymous
5:49 AM
OK.

Sid
But to be honest, many of the European countries don't really make any headlines nor are they viewed to be world powers or something like that
Only Germany and UK and oerhaps, France are seen as world oowers

Anonymous
@Sid What's your point?

Sid
Only Germany and UK and oerhaps, France are seen as world powers

Anonymous
Some countries being a world power has nothing to do with how Europe is defined.

Sid
The point is, even if you define Europe as all countries West of Germany, no one will bat an eye simply because the rest of the countries "don't matter much" to the world

Anonymous
5:54 AM
@Sid I don't agree. I will surely bat an eye.

Anonymous
By doing that you're even leaving out Russia

Anonymous
Now saying that Russia isn't a world power.....

Anonymous
lol

Sid
Russia can be argued to be in Asia simply because a vast stretch of its landmass goes through Asia

Anonymous
That's open to debate.

Anonymous
5:56 AM
I'd say European Russia to be pedantic.

Sid
Russia is culturally close to Europe but geographically in Asia

Anonymous
@Sid If we argue by population density, then European Russia wins with 77% of total Russian population.

Sid
Heh, population density changes with time. It's not a constant.

Anonymous
@Sid Nothing is constant.

Anonymous
We are talking w.r.t the present moment.

Sid
6:01 AM
I wouldn't say it matters much. If tomorrow someone says, Russia is in Asia, I don't think anyone will care about it

@Sid Some Russians will.

Anonymous
@Sid That's based on unfounded assumptions. If that happens I claim that it will be followed by a deadly war.

Anonymous
Russians wouldn't like to be associated with Asia and only Asia.

Anonymous
Don't forget about our very own Jammu & Kashmir

@Blue Well, they're in Asia.

Sid
6:04 AM
@Blue what's with them?

Anonymous
@DawoodibnKareem I don't know if you know. But India and Pakistan have fought so many indirect wars over that piece of land.

@Blue I was aware.

Anonymous
And, Kashmir doesn't want to be associated with either of them.

The vast majority of the population of Moscow, St Petersburg, and a bunch of other large Russian cities see themselves as exclusively Europeans. They won't take kindly to being told they've become Asian overnight.

Anonymous
Exactly ^

Sid
6:06 AM
It's basically that. "A piece of land". But neither side wants to give that up. Simply because it is a rich source of water. The most scarce commodity in South Asia

@LeakyNun That's it! Thanks :-) The express code matches as well.

@JohnRennie no problem

I'm amazed you actually managed to decode the bar code.
That is dedication over and above the call of duty!! :-)

@JohnRennie it isn't that hard really, but I didn't think that I would need to resort to reading the bar code
out of all the available info given
but the barcode is the least corruptible :P
@JohnRennie well I also enjoyed the process of the decryption

It never occurred to me that the info might be in the bar code. That's something to make a mental note of next time!

6:15 AM
otherwise I wouldn't have done it :P
and I learnt something new
(namely, how to decode barcode)

And it is in warranty for another year yet. Result!! :-)

7:23 AM
I fell from my cycle yesterday. Later last night, I stood in the general compartment of the train here for about an hour and a half to reach at around 8 PM.

@Kaumudi.H that's a shame. The weekend is supposed to be all about chilling and recharging your batteries. What's up?
@Kaumudi.H rush hour trains I guess. You OK now though?

user228700
Hence, my body is aching terribly this morning.

wow sorry to hear that

user228700
@Kenshin Yup! :-)

user228700
7:24 AM
@JohnRennie My body aches in the places it got hit during the fall :-(

How did you come off the bike? Drunk again? :-)

user228700
Hehe :-) I had placed my record books on the backseat of my cycle on my way to the ATM. On my way there, I felt around for them books and had a few moments of panic when I couldn't find them there.

user228700
In the midst of this, my cycle hit the pavement, I lost balance and fell hard onto some rocks and dirt.

Ouch! :-(

user228700
Indeed :-( My leg's a bit swollen and both my palms have scars on them. Not too bad though; I could've been crushed by a bus or something!

user228700

@Kenshin Nope. Why dya ask?

user228700
7:29 AM
@JohnR: How's your Saturday going?

@Kaumudi.H I have a headache

Also, I have a very elementary physics confusion:

This might be related to the amount I had to drink last night :-)

@AlexKChen pls ask on physics.qandaexchange.com

user228700
@JohnRennie Ah :-( Due to what, exactly? Do you have sinus problems?

user228700
7:30 AM
@JohnRennie AH :-) Fun night?

@Kenshin It's more trivial than you think.

@JohnRennie make sure u get enough water mate
u didn't drink much on Friday?
@AlexKChen ask away broseph

When you push a wall, why it doesn't move ?

cos u don't push hard enough

@Kaumudi.H it was good fun. An old friend has just split from his wife and moved back to Chester, so we've been meeting up for lads' evenings in the pub to talk about manly things.

7:31 AM
@AlexKChen do you even lift bro?

@AlexKChen suppose you and the wall were floating in space and you push the wall.

user228700
@JohnRennie Oh, ah, I see.

@JohnRennie what about picking up the chicks that's what he needs

@AlexKChen Both you and the wall move, but you weigh much less than the wall does, so you move a lot and the wall only moves a little.

@JohnRennie it's not about the wall's weight tho, it's more about the wall's attachments to other structures such as the ground and roof etc.

7:34 AM
@AlexKChen but now consider what happens when you push on a wall on the Earth's surface. The wall is attached to the Earth, so basically you're pushing on the whole Earth. And the Earth weighs much, much more than you do.

it's a combination of the weight of all the structures (wall and everything attached to it) as well as the strength of the connections between each structure
@JohnRennie but if you can overcome the strength fo the attachment between the wall and the Earth, you can make the wall move without having to push the earth

@Kaumudi.H it's a holiday on Monday in the UK, so it's a three day weekend.

user228700
Ah, same! :-)

user228700
What do you have a holiday for?

user228700
7:37 AM
Ah, I see.

I've never been entirely sure why we have a holdiay at the end of August, but I'm not complaining :-)

user228700
Hehe, OK :-)

It's a holiday on Monday in India as well?

Who complains about holidays? lol :D

@JohnRennie I guess no

user228700
7:37 AM
I'm not too sure about the rest of India but certainly so in Kerala.

@Kaumudi.H Cool :-) So are you going back early on Monday as planned or will you go back on Tuesday?

@Blue people who need the bank
in the days of the great depression, bank holidays were declared to stop people withdrawing their money

user228700
@JohnRennie No, no, they're having a program to celebrate Onam in my hostel on Monday.

Anonymous
For one day I think people can manage without banks

user228700

Yeah, there might be an emergency or something. But I'm excluding that.

@Kaumudi.H It might be a chance to socialise a bit. Get to know your fellow inmates ...

@Kaumudi.H Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. I do hope you heal soon.

user228700

@Kaumudi.H :-)

user228700

@DawoodibnKareem Thanks :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie Thought you weren't getting one!

user228700
@DawoodibnKareem: How are you?

@Kaumudi.H I saw another OnePlus 3 on eBay so I've bought that.

@Kaumudi.H I'm still fighting my way in through the wrapping ...

user228700
Haha, OK :-)

7:49 AM
@Kaumudi.H Really happy, thanks for asking. My contract has been renewed, so I now have work until the end of the year.

user228700
Ooh, nice! :-) Congrats!! What sort of work do you do?

@Kaumudi.H it looks good. There's a scuff on one corner, but otherwise it looks perfect.

Oops sorry @JohnRennie net connection was lost, now back.

Anonymous
You are a freelancer I guess (?) @DawoodibnKareem

user228700
@JohnRennie A scuff?

7:51 AM

user228700
Hmm, OK, thanks!

My thinking in a nutshell:

@JohnRennie OK, so what happens I push really hard when the wall breaks from the contact with the earth ?
And what happens, when I push hard so that it don't move or break completely, but halfway through breaking ?

Anonymous
@AlexKChen If the wall gets separated from the ground then it is much easier to push it (if it doesn't fall down i.e. :P)

Anonymous
You might want to learn the conditions of toppling

7:57 AM
@AlexKChen perhaps we need to be precise about what you are asking.

Okay, I mean standing on earth, when I push the nearest wall I can see, I don't understand how Newton's Law applies to that.
I mean, the wall has a finite (but very big) mass, so it must acclerate - albeit very very slowly, right ?

@AlexKChen The wall is attached to the ground, so in effect you're pushing on the whole planet Earth.

So my turn, albeit very very slowly, is slowing down the rotation of the earth :O ?

@AlexKChen Yes, but only if you also aren't attached to the Earth e.g. if you're on roller skates so you slide away when you push on the wall.
If you're standing on the ground and your feet don't slip then nothing moves.

Okay, and what happens when I bring a very strong freely movable vehicle (eg bulldozer) and break the wall ?

8:03 AM
@Blue Yes, I am a freelance Java programmer. My current contract is for my country's government, working for the department that drafts and publishes laws.

12:24 PM
@AlfredCentauri sure, it gave me pause, but regardless of whether or not he/she lied, your comment was way beyond the realm of acceptable.
There were things wrong with both sides of the conversation.

12:44 PM
@heather to be sure, you apologized profusely to an unabashed liar that, I'm quite certain, could see you coming from a mile away.

@AlfredCentauri look, I don't know what you're getting at here, but you told someone to "go to hell". That's not okay.
You can't make some sort of "oh, he was a liar" excuse for that.
I apologized because heck, that's incredibly insulting and demeaning.
no matter what happened.

@heather I told the (red)devil to go home. Perhaps that's to subtle for some.

Break it up, guys.

@AlfredCentauri, ::snorts:: please do not tell me you didn't understand the connotations of what you said.
that's nonsense.

Q: A call for volunteers - "study group" coordinators and advisors

heatherYou may have read my meta post Discussion groups to assist those self-studying or enrolled students (if you haven't, you probably should, though a quick summary is provided below). Again, this idea grew out of the idea of a "MSE University" but it is not that, so please keep an open mind. So, ...

no, sorry, registering is a poor word choice. right now, we're just getting a list of interested volunteers/students.

@Mithrandir24601 See e.g. meta.stackexchange.com/a/286182/263383 - the bar is much higher than for any other post, but outright rude and offensive material is usually not okay.
If you think you see such a profile, raise a moderator attention flag on one of the user's post.
@Blue We do.

@ACuriousMind OK, that's useful, thanks

1:46 PM
Ok @ACuriousMind, how do I get on first name basis with ppl

@0celo7 I think it is generally thought that the older one/the one in the higher position should offer that.

@ACuriousMind well they don't in America

Well, I have no idea how society is supposed to work in America :P

@ACuriousMind I have an open set $\Omega$ in $\Bbb R^2$, and I'm looking at the graph of a smooth function $u:\bar\Omega\to\Bbb R$. So this surface lives in the cylinder $\bar\Omega\times\Bbb R$. I want to compare this with other surfaces in the cylinder that agree with $\Gamma(u)$ on the boundary.
The claim is that $\Gamma(u)$ is homologous to any such surface, but is this true even if they intersect in the interior?
Note that I want to use Stokes, so the interpolating chain needs to have some kind of regularity.
I think I got the end result I wanted by a different method, but I'm still wondering if this is true.

Sorry, quite literally no brain resources to spare right now

1:53 PM
@ACuriousMind please revisit when you're not hungover
I'd like to know the answer

Not hungover, busy. I'll be hungover tomorrow :P

@JohnRennie I need to open some sketchy links in my legal book buying journey
