who pings @heather's in 2017

?
apparently you =P

urrrrrrrrgggggggg
yes

who let's the dogs out in 2017?
:P

12:23 AM
@heather are you considering entering the junior breakthrough prize next year?

yeah, possibly.

:-D
you could get tons of ideas off this network
what do you think^ @dmckee?

12:44 AM
honestly fuck that it's lame
@heather i remember there was an intel science fair or something
when i was in high school
you should participate in that it's more serious i'd say

yeah, i am going to.
i've been working on my project ::rubs hands evilly::

nice i like bad girls
i mean that in a socially acceptable way
i'm not THAT weird

perhaps, "devious" is better?

replacing which word?

bad

12:49 AM
i don't think that's any better
are you skull?

who?

the old woman

i can totally respect that
it's better than other old people* baking cookies, kniting scarves and playing bingo all day.

yeah, the Putnam is legiondary
along with math 55
CS 50 is getting really popular

1 hour later…
2:46 AM
@ACuriousMind i have a physics question

3:00 AM
@ooolb What? For the physics chat room? Is that kosher? Aren't you suppose to ask about programming, cooking, pure math, music, or travel in here?

you be the judge
alright
if enrico fermie is doing a fermie problem is it a fermi problem or is it fermie's problem?
2
anyone?
@SirCumference

3:47 AM
The kappa effect or perceptual time dilation is a temporal perceptual illusion that can arise when observers judge the elapsed time between sensory stimuli applied sequentially at different locations. In perceiving a sequence of consecutive stimuli, subjects tend to overestimate the elapsed time between two successive stimuli when the distance between the stimuli is sufficiently large, and to underestimate the elapsed time when the distance is sufficiently small. == In different sensory modalities == The kappa effect can occur with visual (e.g., flashes of light), auditory (e.g., tones), or tactile...

4:07 AM
It would be "a fermi problem," regardless of who is doing it.
You could talk about Fermi's problem solving method.

What's with the e
how did his name grow a e in 2 places but not the middle

typo
no ie

hmmm

4:26 AM
oh my fock
is there no e in fermi?
dammit i said fermie because i was calling my friend a degenerate because he's a fermie (play on normie) and i got used to it
fml @mods fix it

lol

yeah, the i before e combo is instinctive :-)

I think that only applies if you know there's both letters in there, like friend vs freind
but you wouldn't do e.g. fiend for find

i think they meant ending in ie
i believe that

hmmm
doesn't seem like all that many words end in ie, more in y or ies
candy <-> candies but presumably no candie

4:35 AM
@enumaris link me a song that will make me feel something

no thanks i don't need toilet paper
a REAL song

please
i'm done with kpop forever
i had a friend who listened to it
and he helped me paint my apartment blue but only on the condition that he played his songs on loudspeaker so he doesn't get bored
focking k pop for 7 hours almost decided to kms
but i let it slide

4:42 AM
@enumaris your memes are low level
you lost my respect
13 year old
:p

hmmm

@enumaris link me your favourite song
no memes
or i'm going to sleep

dunno if I have a favorite star
song*

english please
well idk if it would cool if there were lyrics too

4:58 AM
uh...
I only listen to English songs on the radio
so I don't really remember them

what is this circa 2005?

Most of the time if I listen on spotify or youtube it's Cpop lol

hmmm
do you know aimer?

no

search aimer - dareka umi wo
think you'll like it

5:01 AM
ok

5:30 AM
What's up with the chemical engineers making so much more money?
Lifetime earnings by college degree. Strike it rich at chemical engineering, or go for the stable living wage of nursing? Overall, the medians for all degrees aren't as far apart as one might expect.
...than the median.

Sid
6:21 AM
Computer Science has a lower median than Electrical and Chemical Engineering?
If that is for the US, then the US is doomed

Chemical should be first because of oil

6:54 AM
when I went back my alma mater to visit my professor, he said an adult should be responsible for self.
but I think even adults can't completely respond for self. Adults depend on vocations to support themselves. You can only respond for yourself only if there is some vocation offerers who can give you the vocation you can undertake.

9:47 AM
Hi, everyone :-)

@Kaumudi.H Morning

@Kaumudi.H Morning

@Kaumudi.H Morning
Well it's actually lunchtime. Although it's still quite dark outside.

10:09 AM
it's dinner time. It has been sundown.

@CaptainBohemian you in a South-East Asia time zone?

It's 5:12am here :P

it never ocuurs that it's still dark in lunch time here. The sun always rises before 6: 30 am.

Sunset will be at 15:18 here. That would be a bit early for dinner time.

10:14 AM
It's snowing here in the GMT time zone - snowing like it means it too!

@Loong that sound so absurd. the sun never sets before 5 pm.

Well, if I would drive north to Utsjoki, the next sunrise would be on 16 January.
sunrise 12:01, sunset 12:42 then
Hm, I would need different winter tyres there.

that should be close to the Arctic.

We're getting about 8 hours of daylight right now, which is about as bad as it gets given the solstice is only a week or so away.

No snow in London, it looks like quite a bright day.

10:25 AM
See that map? Sunshine to the East of Chester and sunshine to the West of Chester. And over Chester? Snow!

@JohnRennie We get less than 6 hours here now, and the Sun doesn't higher than 6°.

10:39 AM
It never snows here, but rains too much. I prefer sun-abundant places.

@MoziburUllah are you in London at the moment?
For some reason I'd got the idea you were based in the US.
(ah, yes, your profile does say London - oh well)

i heard London is a sun-scarce place.

@CaptainBohemian no, the South-East of the UK is fairly dry. It tends to be the West side that gets all the rain.
I spent six years in Cambridge, which is just North of London, and that was pretty dry.

10:55 AM
maybe it's Scotland which is sun-scarce.

@CaptainBohemian the West of Scotland has a very, very wet climate.

11:10 AM
@JohnRennie: I am actually in London - North London.

My aunt used to live in Finchley. Anywhere near there?

Not far from there - I'm in Wood Green - I can walk to Finchly in half an hour; actually more like forty-five...
How about you - you were once in Leeds?

Ah, yes, I know Wood Green. Or at least I used to but that was several decades ago.

@CaptainBohemian: well, its sunny in London today; but it is cold.
@JohnRennie: I doubt things have much changed from then ;).

I used to go to Leeds quite often when I worked for Unilever because one of the Unilever companies, Elida Faberge, had a factory there.

11:16 AM
Ah, ok; I went to school there.

To be honest the bit of Leeds around the factory is all industrial units and not particularly scenic.

user228700
@JohnR: My uncle stole the scooter :-/

Leeds is pretty industrial...

@Kaumudi.H that's so mean :-)

user228700
To be fair, it was only because my little cousin brother was absolutely dying of boredom and needed going out :-)

11:18 AM
@MoziburUllah I don't know how cold you count as cold. it's 16 C here and I feel it somewhat cold. Last night the temperature dropped to 13 C, the coldest since the summer was gone.

@Kaumudi.H You have a pushbike at your grans don't you?

user228700
No! Whatever gave you that idea?

... not sure.
I had some vague memory of when you were on holiday there and you said something about cycling to the forest or mountains or something?

user228700
:-P Well, I may have told you about the time I went riding around on one here.

user228700
:-) Yes, you remember correctly. That's not mine, that belongs to a worker who used to be employed by my granddad.

11:20 AM
@CaptainBohemian: I'm not sure of the temperature here; but whatever it is, it feels cold. I've just been for a brisk walk in the park and thats warmed me up. Still, its better off inside where one can just jack up the heating.

@Kaumudi.H and presumably no longer available?

user228700
Yes, correct.

I guess you'll just have to veg out on the couch and watch TV :-)
We could install Linux on your laptop ...

user228700
No, I am tired of T.V! Been watching it for about 3 hours now yeesh!

user228700
@JohnRennie Yes, yes, we should do that. How about after your lunch?

11:23 AM
@Kaumudi.H actually we can't. You'll need the spare SSD and a 1.5GB Linux install image.
Even if you have the spare SSD to hand your gran's broadband probably isn't up to downloading the Linux ISO.

user228700
Ah :-/

user228700
Well, then we'll need to wait until after 18th, when I'll be back home.

Installing Linux isn't that exciting anyway ...

user228700
:-)

Surf YouTube?

user228700
11:25 AM
No, I want to make something!

user228700
I am completely sick of consuming!

user228700
(Well, except food. Food is always welcome to be consumed)

Make some gulab jamun?

user228700
:-) A perfect combination, eh? First, I'd make it and then I'd consume it! :-D

user228700
Alas, I couldn't possibly do that at my gran's...

11:28 AM
When's the next meal? Presumably dinner, and therefore hours away ...

user228700
I haven't had my lunch yet, actually.

user228700
When I go out though, I might buy something small to eat. And then, of course, yes, dry dosas for dinner.

Isn't it 5 p.m. where you are?

user228700
Yes :-P

That's a late lunch!

user228700
11:29 AM
You know why I don't want to have lunch :-P

Ah, yes, gran's cooking ...

user228700
:-)

user228700
Agggh, I want to make something!!!

user228700
(Not food)

Configure a Google Drive backup?

user228700
11:32 AM
Not software either ('cause I still suck at Python-gonna practice during my winter break!). I don't know what, that's the trouble.

Hmm, I don't know how to make anything that isn't food or software ...
Go for a run?

user228700
@JohnRennie You already suggest I do this! Plus, it's not making anything at all!

user228700
@JohnRennie A drive, in half an hour, when my uncle comes back :-)

That's not too bad, if you can get the scooter when your uncle's back
Scoot into town and buy some gulab jamun :-)

user228700
:-)

user228700
11:35 AM
I might! Actually, I'm thinking of buying some bread, cheese and tomatoes to make sandwiches for an early dinner!! :-D

Make sure to play Born to be Wild on your phone as you're on the scooter.

user228700
Not loading :-/

Hmm, not available in India?

user228700
No, no, the hotspot on my phone is pretty slow...

"Born to Be Wild" is a song first performed by the band Steppenwolf, written by Mars Bonfire. The song is often invoked in both popular and counter culture to denote a biker appearance or attitude. It is sometimes described as the first heavy metal song, and the second verse lyric "heavy metal thunder" marks the first use of this term in rock music (although not as a description of a musical style). == Composition == "Born to Be Wild" was written by Mars Bonfire (who also wrote several other songs for Steppenwolf) as a ballad. Bonfire was previously a member of the Sparrows, the predecessor band...

> The song is often invoked in both popular and counter culture to denote a biker appearance or attitude.

user228700
Ah :-)

The video I've linked is the song in the film Easy Rider, which is a cult biker movie.

user228700
Ah, I see :-)

(it's actually a pretty dull film)

Yeah, I found it dull; I never understood its cult appeal...
I like the song though...

12:24 PM
Mornin

@Slereah evenin!

Please, you're in the UK
Evening will be for our indian friends

Guten tag.

@Slereah nup. I'm actually in China at the minute :)

Are you selling our precious physics secrets to the communists

12:32 PM
@Slereah ha! No, I'm at a conference, listening to lots of talks

on what topic

In Beijing?

@Slereah trapped quantum systems, so trapped ions, atoms and photonics, although I am a little confused as to why 'photonics' = 'trapped system'

Maybe they're trapping them into black holes

@MoziburUllah near Guangzhou

12:35 PM
Isn't that the region where all ebay sellers of knock offs are?

@Slereah if they are, I've yet to hear that talk yet :P
@Slereah erm... No idea... It's right next to Hong Kong

1:18 PM

@mavavilj: Hi!
Ooops, wromg place...

2:01 PM
@ACuriousMind ::rips hair out:: Shoen and Yau reference a Cheng and Yau paper 6 times and none of what they say is in there is actually there

hi
i've got a (more than "a") question about current flowing inside an open circuit, connected to a closed cutcuit
here is a circuit, a closed circuit with a dc voltage source connected to two open wires
my question is, why isn't current divided into i_x and i_y and why doesn't some of it flow (and stuck) in wire at point "a" ?
because, as I know, a charged wire (the wire in which there is a resistor in photo) has more potential than an uncharged wire (the one with point "a" on it) so current might want to flow in it (from higher potential to less)
why doesn't it happen?

Is there something missing on the RHS? There seems to be a big gap which stops it from forming a closed circuit.

what?
no it's full
the photo's ok it's just too close to the frame!!
it's an open circuit in there, the RHS!

2:16 PM
@parvin suppose we redraw your circuit as:
i.e. we put a capacitor where the break in your wire is.

I’m scared of circuits

When you first turn on the power we will get a transient current i_x while the capacitor is charging.
@parvin OK so far?

Are you guys working off the same textbook?!

ok @JohnRennie

And the size of the transient current will depend on how big the capacitance is. A big capacitor will hold a lot of charge so we get a high transient current.

2:19 PM
yes, ok...?

Now imagine making the capacitor smaller and smaller, so the transient current gets smaller and smaller.
Your open circuit is effectively the limit of making the capacitor really tiny.
So in your circuit when we turn on the power there will indeed be a transient current i_x, but it will be very small indeed and flow for only a very short time.

i see!

@JohnRennie fortran :<

so, is it correct to say there would be a little bit of waste of charge because of the wire? @JohnRennie
are the little amount of i_x stuck inside the wire or does it flow back?

Yes. Even a piece of wire has some non-zero capacitance. That is called its self capacitance.

2:24 PM
thank you !

But self capacitance is generally very very small.

I see.

@0celo7 That sounds familiar :)

@0celo7 you have my sympathy!

Any idea what a "Courant number" is?
oh it's in the notes, nvm

3:51 PM
@Sid Why? I guess it is just demand-supply...

@Blue I think there might also be an effect that a larger proportion of computer scientists stay in academia than of the engineers

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind "larger proportion of computer scientists". Yup! Completely opposite of what happens in the developing countries(they need more software engineers)! Here almost every CS student goes into industry.

Well, to be fair I have no data, it's just a hunch

Urgh
I can't find anything in that paper
How does a reference like that get past reviewers?
I am thinking that there is a collection of "well known" facts that no one actually knows
2

lol
like the "aether" was?

4:04 PM
@user685252 Not physics
I don't trust anything in physics
unless you've done all the experiments from scratch, you can't say you're a physicist
and you're just reporting stuff that may or may not be completely wrong

Sid
@Blue Computers are the future! If CS guys don't earn enough, it shouldn't be too good for the country as a whole

Anonymous
@Sid That is nonsense.

Sid
(Obviously. I wasn't serious back there either)

Anonymous
Also it's not like they're not earning enough. We're just looking at the relative pay scales

Anonymous
It's easier to get a software job from other fields. But a person trained only in CS will find it difficult to transition to other industries

4:16 PM
There are zero people doing something else instead of CS because of pay

Anonymous
@0celo7 Proof?

4:45 PM
@0celo7 "The pure mathematician who wants to set up all of his work with absolute accuracy is not likely to get very far in physics"

uhm
0celo is shitposting lol
but your quote is dumb too

yeah, some "dummy" said it...

@Blue left to the reader

lol

what is going on here
