10:00 PM
@IceLord I'm pretty sure @JohnRennie is the face of physics.SE to much more people ;)

user218912
my first experience with this site was ACM downvoting my first question and commenting about how it's low quality.

@ACuriousMind And qmechanic! "Possible duplicate of ___" is the thing many new users first see :)

"$\bullet$ is the Schwartz multiplication in $\mathcal{D}' (\Omega)$"

@NeuroFuzzy Right!

I thought there was no Schwartz multiplication

10:01 PM
Having your tags edited by Qmechanic is probably the first rite of passage

That's literally the point of the impossibility theorem

user218912
idk about you guys but I didn't know about Qmechanic or JR until later. I only saw ACM everywhere.

user218912
this is about 5 months before I came to the chat.

Well technically it's $^\star D'$
I guess it's possible

user218912
that googly eyed skull profile image. lol

10:02 PM
Ah, Morte. Good times.

user218912
btw @ACuriousMind you never had a blue profile image :(

Planescape was breddy good

user218912
you don't like blue?

@IceLord I'm not picking the pictures for the colours, but for the characters in them
I guess it just so happened they rarely have a blue colour scheme

user218912
@ACuriousMind well... do you know any blue characters? XD

10:05 PM
@IceLord Aside from Liara the Asari from Mass Effect I struggle to think of any

I have a crush on Liara
@ACuriousMind link me the place to vote and I'll vote for you.

user218912
@ACuriousMind that should definitely be your next profile image.

user218912
it looks suitable.

@0celo7 1. You can't vote yet. 2. I have faith you'll find that on your own.
@IceLord I don't like her as a character, though.

user218912
:(

user218912
10:06 PM
@ACuriousMind did you play persona 3 ever?

I don't care enough to vote unless someone sends me the link.

@0celo7 Then maybe it's better you don't vote :P

Maybe.
I'm too much of a nihilist to care about petty things like site policy.
And the fact that I don't know any physics or use the main site.
Oh my god
am I really a nihilist

@0celo7 You are

How do I fix it

10:12 PM
@0celo7 Start caring about things & people I guess
Or perhaps that's not it
Find meaning in the things you do
there

I care about certain people and things

But do you see meaning in what you do & the things around you?

user218912
@0celo7 I added you on skype, I forgot my old acc details.

No
@IceLord I don't use Skype

@0celo7 Then find it & quit being a nihilist

10:14 PM
Can't log in any more
@BernardMeurer how??

or don't, being a nihilist is fine

user218912
oh well.

@Slereah ponies for everybody!

@NeuroFuzzy Vermin Supreme 2016

@BernardMeurer I'm scared that I'm a hardcore misanthrope

10:16 PM
@0celo7 You seem to be fairly misanthrope

How do I tell for sure?

@0celo7 Do you despise people?

user218912
look at yourself in a mirror

Some people very deeply.

user218912
hope that's not me :o

10:18 PM
@IceLord Not right now, no.

user218912
because I ask some pretty dumb questions.

user218912
okay :D

@BernardMeurer Why do you keep saying "Vermin Supreme"?
@0celo7 I think if you're scared of that, you're not a hardcore misanthrope

@ACuriousMind He's a troll 3rd part candidate in the US.
His platform is ponies for everyone.
@ACuriousMind Maybe more curious. I'm too much of a nihilist to be actually scared of it.
Oh my god what is wrong with me

@0celo7 That much I gathered from my use of the Almighty Google, but I'm not sure why @BernardMeurer keeps bringing him up

user218912
10:20 PM
@Slereah what was the image of a sparkly cat you posted a few months ago?

user218912
can you post it again plz.

Look at Slereath's comment
his campaing

@ACuriousMind Because he has hilarious claims for being elected

@NeuroFuzzy Exaclty

Like "ponies for everyone" <- hard line stance

10:23 PM
@NeuroFuzzy Why do I have you on Skype? :p

@BernardMeurer I despise people with overly large backpacks
Stupid stuff like that

@BernardMeurer IDK, boredom probably!

What does the convolution operator do
$\star : D'(\Omega) \times D(\Omega) \to E(\Omega)$
Is it the same as the usual convolution?
Hm, I suppose it is

@Slereah Honestly, whom here do you expect to know that? :D
I'd wager no one has read the things you're reading

Do the convolutions of distributions and test functions always give smooth functions?
You never know

10:38 PM
@Slereah I think in general it will only give a distribution.

Oh my god
He's not even using hyperreal numbers, he's using some fancier set based on them
fugg

@ACuriousMind Too busy to stay and chat, but saw the nominations thing and you have my vote sir. I think you would make an excellent moderator :)

Huh @ACuriousMind I thought we can mollify distributions by convolution

@StanShunpike Why, thank you!

@Slereah Maybe read Rudin and Evans before doing whatever you're doing.

10:41 PM
@0celo7 Hmmm
You might be right

whom

@Slereah Rudin Analysis, Rudin Functional analysis, Evans PDE.
You clearly don't know enough basic mathematics for whatever you're reading.

We'll see

Says the man who doesn't know what a logarithm is

10:42 PM
I'm not reading PhD level QFT.

@0celo7 Btw I proved that the square root exists

continuous log:
discontinuous log

@BernardMeurer how?

Dangit, embed you stupid image!
Sorry, I just made that joke on my complex analysis homework and had to make it again.

Are you taking geometry yet?

10:45 PM
@0celo7 This will be long

@NeuroFuzzy I think making that joke is almost obligatory :)

Ok that was Way gayer than I thought it would be.

$$\text{Archimedean Property}\\ \text{for }a>0, b\in\mathbb{R}\\ \exists {n\in\mathbb{N}} s.t. na>b$$

Write properly please
If you are typing, no logical quantifiers!!!

Never

10:48 PM
@BernardMeurer I think 0celo7 wishes that you communicate in complete natural sentences instead of mathematical shorthand

@ACuriousMind Got it

Yes pls

There is an $n$ in the naturals such that, for $b,a\in\mathbb{R}$ and $a>0$ the product of $n$ and $a$ is larger than $b$
Make sense?

No, you can write n in N
And you don't have to write the product of

$\textrm{0celot} \in \mathfrak{fusspots}$

10:50 PM
:/
Okay

@BernardMeurer Uh I'll teach you one day

Do you want proof of that corollary?

Not now. Later you can show me and I'll show you how to correctly write it, deal?

@0celo7 $\forall_{x\neq\ \text{0celo7}}, \heartsuit x$

@0celo7 Deal
I'll go back to chemistry then

10:52 PM
PhD quantum mechanics you mean
@NeuroFuzzy you're lucky I'm on a phone and can't parse that in my head.

@0celo7 Lol, yep

I suspect heartsuit isn't nice.
@NeuroFuzzy what does that even mean
who writes $\forall_x$
it's $\forall x$
@Slereah Robinson?

Non-standard analysis by Robinson

seems crack-potty

Not really

11:12 PM
@0celo7 I think $\forall_x$ looks way nicer haha

@NeuroFuzzy Wat. Literally never seen it
Then again most books I have don't write it

Then you don't have any books worth reading

Let's do $\forall_x^{\in A}$ for maximal notational confusion :P

Oh
I remember
The best paper
By Schonfinkel
He tried to derive the most compact logical notation possible
First replacing all logical operators with Schaeffer's stroke
Then using reverse Polish notation
then including quantifiers in the operator
He used $|^x$ as $f(x) |^x g(x) \equiv \forall x. \neg (f(x) \wedge g(x))$
Then since every proposition used the same operator and only the order mattered, he rewrote everything as logical combinators
And so he wrote all of first order logic using only three symbols

Q: What are specific qualities that you need to be a moderator?

heatherI am asking this for two reasons - one, so I can see how to vote; i.e., what is important, and two, to just see what I need to do to get to this level of "helpfulness" (not necessarily being moderator) to the physics.SE community. What specific qualities do moderators need? I.e., how much time s...

@Slereah But...why? :D

It was the 20's
It was still back when people thought that having the smallest logical system would have some sort of use

@0celo7 Huh, you didn't nominate yourself for moderator?

@Slereah I guess they then realized that size doesn't matter?

Heyoooo
That was the era of Turing tarpits

11:35 PM
@ACuriousMind for emperor!

The quantum scale: one of the few cases where size doesn't matter

@SirCumference huh, why would you expect that?

@ACuriousMind He's got the rep

I have found a rule of thumb that basically you cannot have a decent turing equivalent system without five Things

@DanielSank You misspelt "janitor" ;)

11:36 PM
Logical combinators need three symbols and two transformation rules
OISC need three symbols and have two branching cases

@ACuriousMind Oh come on.

The 2-3 state machine has it right in the name
The smallest version of Brainfuck that will work has about 5 symbols
etc

But yeah, when my friends ask me "how small is an electron", I reply "Have you ever heard the phrase, 'size doesn't matter?' Quantum mechanics takes it literally."
Also good luck @ACuriousMind

@DanielSank I couldn't think of a cleverer reply :P
@SirCumference Thanks, although I'd be perfectly happy to not get elected if certain other people step forward.

Halp
It's too late to read about ultrafilters

11:42 PM
@ACuriousMind Dang man, you're epitomizing a proper moderator

@SirCumference Don't care enough.
@SirCumference Don't be silly.

@0celo7 But you worked to get the rep, didn't you?

He's playing the system, just like Washington did.
@SirCumference I haven't answered any questions in months
I don't think someone who actively despises physics should be a moderator of a physics forum

@0celo7 I defer to your knowledge of American history
Never really cared so much about history

@0celo7 Obligatory remark: This isn't a forum.

11:45 PM
@0celo7 I don't think moderating the site and removing the garbage has to do with liking physics
It's the same reason you hang around in the chat

@ACuriousMind Ah, of course not.

@SirCumference But why would you do it if you didn't really like physics or use the site?

@ACuriousMind You like the community?
Willing to help, I guess

I defer to my topology prof, who suggested the Math Stack Exchange and Math Overflow forums for help with my compact open problem

hating the site and hating physics don't seem the same to me

11:49 PM
@SirCumference Possible, but I'm not sure that's the case for the self-professed misanthrope @0celo7 :P
@0celo7 And did you post a question there yet?

Self-possessed? What does that mean?
@ACuriousMind No, I figured it out the old-fashioned way.

Regardless, I'm okay with whoever wins this election. The U.S. election, on the other hand, is making me feel worse and worse.

Went to the library and got every book on topology I could.
I have part 1 of 9 solved.

@0celo7 Read that word again

Did you edit it?

11:51 PM
Nope

Hmm.
I swear it said possessed a second ago.

Although you being possessed might explain a few things

What does that mean?
Crap. Linear algebra on my analysis homework
@ACuriousMind halp

@0celo7 Still no idea how you can dislike physics

@0celo7 You'll have to be a bit more specific what you need help with

11:55 PM
@ACuriousMind I don't accept AoC and I think I need a basis on the Banach space

Oh dear

my prof thinks me rejecting AoC is annoying

Well, I'm not going to support your anti-choice position, either
Just convert to the Church of AoC and do your homework.

@SirCumference it's pointless and nonrigorous

11:58 PM
an activity must have one of those two to be worth anything

"Linear Algebra Abridged is generated from Linear Algebra Done Right (third edition) by excluding all proofs, examples, and exercises, along with most comments. Learning linear algebra without proofs, examples, and exercises is probably impossible."

user218912
@0celo7 pointless, really?

If you can do Riemannian geometry you can do that

no probably not @bolbteppa
Linear algebra is so conceptually difficult

@0celo7 How is it pointless? The reason we have buildings or electronics is thanks to physics

11:59 PM
Not that kind of physics

What is hard about linear algebra

that kind of physics is "engineering" according to the VTC menu, btw
