@Obliv : see tex.stackexchange.com/a/115065. To test it, find a LaTeX expression on PSE, right click on it, then show text as MathMMLcode. Then copy the code into say notepad, insert the a first line <?xml version="1.0"?>, then copy all lines and paste it into your word document. The result is a Word equation.

@JohnDuffield What are we trying to accomplish here?
Bending Microsoft software to our will?

I found a mathematical shadow of myself in this OP
5
Q: How can I improve my problem solving abilities so that I stop missing the obvious?

BendyToothI'm a generally good math problem solver. I get decent scores on contests, top of my class in math courses, and have a pretty wide array of knowledge from which to relate concepts in order to solve problems in unique ways. But I have a defect; I never see the "best" way to solve a problem. I kno...

@DanielSank I thought it was the other way around: Microsoft uses software to bend our wills!

::puts on tinfoil hat::

4:03 PM
@DanielSank : copy LaTeX equations into Word.

@JohnDuffield How about tex2png?
Although generally I find trying to overcome Word's enormous shortcomings through these various workarounds to be a huge waste of time.

However my case is complicated by free associations/memory correlations. There exists cases of overthinking when a memory correlation was triggered when I tried to use a toolbox

...but I'm biased probably. I'm working on a blog post about how to make LaTeX very nice to use.
almost done.

However it has been many years, and I do have become more stable in problem solving, this I don't really need to worry about much

@DanielSank If TeX was easy to use the TeX Stack Exchange wouldn't have 120,000 questions!

@JohnRennie TeX SE save my time ocassioanally especially when I want to type some weird accents on top of the variables I am using
you know how there are many maths symbols with weird things on top of them

@ACuriousMind I've always thought it was a bit unfair how everyone gripes about Microsoft but they're happy not just to bend over but even to apply the vaseline themselves for Apple.

@DanielSank : personally I don't want to create an image.

@JohnRennie I'm not a fan of Apple either :P

4:11 PM
@Secret if you're writing equations then TeX is unparalleled. MS do have an equation editor, but it's a pale shadow of what you can do with TeX. But the vast majority of Word users don't have to write equations, or at most only simple equations.
MS are in the business to make money. If they concentrated their attention on the small and largely impoverished group that constitutes physicists they wouldn't make any money.

LaTex is awesome in writing equations. Back in my honours thesis I typed it all up in latex because it is the field's standard practice, while for most other chemsitry fields, they will use word instead
However, when it comes to adjusting where to put figures, the code can make it a bit notrivial to workwith
I often use a hybrid approach when writing documents full of equations: 1. Latex for the equations and msot of the layout, and other software to create the figures
However this will mean whenever there's a mistake in the picture, I will need to edit it and save them into the files again to update them

4:27 PM
@Secret Memory correlations is an interesting middle ground that lies between my analytical thinking mode and my flow based artistic thinking mode (which only just recently that I start to try to comprehend it). It is similar to analytical thinking because how it works can be summarised into one rule that is "A is similar to B" thus it has its own logic, but at the same time, the associations are highly unpredictable similar to the resulting artwork obtained from nonanalytical thinking modes.

@Secret that's somewhat intentional, I think. The idea (not that I'm claiming this is true) is that LaTeX knows better than you just how to arrange the figures to make the document look good.

I tend to prefer a drag drop when it comes to adjusting figures, it is much easier than having to fiddle with so many parameters

I tend to prefer fiddling with nothing whatsoever. Which is what LaTeX allows me to do ;-)
And it works out well enough.

By the way, the previous discussions about thermodynamics, stat mech and entropy have helped me to clarified enough misconceptions about entropy that this 2 years old pet theory like idea of mine is now finally put to rest and sent back to where it belong: Scifantasy land

@JohnRennie What?

4:33 PM
@0celo7 Feeling sore are we? :-) $80 for a PSU eh?

@JohnRennie Nope, replaced for free.

... under the warranty this time. But next time?

3 year warranty.
@JohnRennie So no, I still don't understand your Vaseline comment
Vaseline is so...unromantic. And messy.

I don't wish to get banned so I'm going to put this behind me.
No, hang on I didn't mean ...
DON'T FLAG ME!

Someone flagged you?

4:38 PM
@0celo7 attempt at a silly joke

@0celo7 do you have the proof of the vanishing derivatives of H yet?

@Secret No, did you read the actual proof of the theorem?
I'm not convinced you have.

what is the name of that theorem?

You're asking about something in the problem statement, not the proof.
Fundamental lemma of calculus of variations? Not sure.

ok let me have a look now that I have the name of it

4:44 PM
I'll check Evans when I get it for a proof. But I'm busy right now. In class
Evans should be here by tomorrow evening according to the postal service

@JohnRennie hi , sorry it may seem silly but do you have an idea what it may mean at the beginning of a book:
TEXT FLY... :s

Q: Can there be rate of change of force or rate of rate of change of force?

chirag bansalIs there a rate of change force? I know that net force is rate of change of momentum or mass *acceleration. But is there rate of change of force or (mass * jerk) ? or Rate of rate of change of force(mass *jounce) How to relate them to the physical world? Is it even physically possible?...

Probably because a momentum analogue of jerk and acceleration does noth have nice symmetry or conservation or is redundant because most EOM are second order

@2physics I have no idea I'm afraid. Some technical term to do with the way the book has been typeset?

thanks, I don't know.. leave it, I was just curious
thought maybe it's sth important that they have mentioned at the first pages this way:

thanks; but doesn't make sense about this pdf file. ..

I need to ask 0celo7 again later, cause fundamental lemma of calculus of variations covers the properties of f and g when they integrate to zero with any compactly supported smooth functions. But it is not the theorem that explains why when the derivatives are bounded, they will integrate to zero with any $\varphi$ function and its derivatives

5:33 PM
@Secret The thing you keep asking me about is certainly false, there's more to it that you're not reading correctly / saying.
Judging by your conversations with @ACuriousMind I'm inclined to believe it's he former.

user218912
@0celo7 no I don't, why is it like that?

user218912
I thought it was a typo

user218912
is it because complex conjugate?

user218912
since it's acting on the bra

Ah I see where I got wrong: I overlooked that Eqt 19 is part of theorem 22.10 which is why I completely not noticed it was proved on the next slide
now that I am aware the proof exists, I can now read it in more detail
Bleh, balme my absent mindness

5:47 PM
@IceLord yes
@Secret I only said that about 5 times.

I have no idea why I read this as
yesterday, by 0celo7
I posted the proof right after
I (will) posted the proof right after (the class)

I must be having some kind of () going on in my thinking
Looks like next time I should read a sentence twice to ensure I am actually reading the same thing

@JohnRennie meanwhile, using equations in Word is damn near impossible

6:12 PM
@DanielSank Doesn't word support MathMM or whatever?
Idk the name of it

6:24 PM
@BernardMeurer MathML?
Mathematical Markup Language (MathML) is a mathematical markup language, an application of XML for describing mathematical notations and capturing both its structure and content. It aims at integrating mathematical formulae into World Wide Web pages and other documents. It is part of HTML5 and an ISO standard ISO/IEC DIS 40314 since 2015. == History == MathML 1 was released as a W3C recommendation in April 1998 as the first XML language to be recommended by the W3C. Version 1.01 of the format was released in July 1999 and version 2.0 appeared in February 2001. In October 2003, the second edition...

There we go, exactly that, thanks John
Word has MathML support
although MathML, in my opinion, is shit
like most XML extensions
in fact most standards made by W3C are shit

You're in a cheerful mood :-)

Well, okay, I'm being unfair :p
W3C is alright
SGML & it's evil babies are what's horrible
@JohnRennie I'm always in the right mood to hate on web stuff

WYSIWYG Is arguably the worst acronym ever
Or abbreviation, w/e

6:40 PM
@BernardMeurer do you need a cookie?

@DanielSank I need a good frying pan

Sounds like a problem with a simple solution...

@DanielSank You going to explain that modularity stuff?

Trade money for frying pan.

I'd be moderately interested in that.

6:41 PM
@Danu Yes.
Very nearly done.
I figured out how to make it all very easy.

Okay.
All modularity I have so far is

@DanielSank And what do I trade to get the money to trade for the frying pan?
I just failed HARD at frying an egg

\input{part of the document} haha

@BernardMeurer Work.
@Danu heh. See my blog post.

@DanielSank Lol, we've been through this before

6:42 PM
I start with that, and show how it fails ;)

Works well enough for my purposes, to be honest.

No one wants a freshman

@DanielSank ??
It's just the same as actually having the code there

@Danu Just wait for the post.

How can it "fail"?
It's nothing amazing but I don't see what "fail" is supposed to even mean here :P

6:43 PM
@Danu Just wait for the post.

@Danu Quit asking for spoilers dude

@Danu I am providing downloadable minimal working examples for each section of the post.
It will all be clear soon enough.

I'm also curious to see what you are using modularity for: I like the idea, but now that I think about it I don't really need it right now. Do you have a lot of data/plots/figures or something?

@Danu I like to write short articles on various topics as I figure them out.
Then came thesis time and I needed to include those articles as appendices.

Appendices, okay

6:45 PM
This revealed many problems with \input.
Aha! But not just appendices. What if I want to use an article I've written as a chapter in my thesis? What if I want to use an article I've written as a section of another article?
etc.
LaTeX by itself does not make this easy at all.

Alright
I'll be waiting ^^

Very good then.
I will work with utmost speed.
I might even turn on comments for this post.
might

@DanielSank DO OR DARE
(wait, do = dare!)

Wut?

I don't know why I said that

6:50 PM
Neither do I.

By the way, Daniel, would you consider running for PSE mod?
Perhaps @JohnRennie ^^?
Oh, jk ACM is not doing that I guess
Reading the chat in more detail, I guess he might
@ACuriousMind But we can destroy a user :D

@Danu I thought about it for a whole microsecond before I figured my occasional emotional outbursts in chat probably make me unsuited to the job.

@DanielSank Okay---for the record I think you'd make a fine candidate and I don't think the outburst are much of an issue.
I noticed on HSM (there is not as much going on there, but okay) that it's much easier to keep your calm when you know you're supposed to be a mod on the site.

Ha!
Interesting.

?

6:56 PM
@Danu It was an expression of delight mixed with surprise as your statement brought unexpected and interesting information.

@DanielSank Okay :)

It was not "Ha! That's stupid and you're stupid for saying it".

If neither you nor ACM runs I might consider running---if you both do then I think I'd be happy settling for you guys as mods.

I feel perhaps I'm on the opposite side of the "ha" issue as compared to last time it came up XD

lmao

6:57 PM
It's true.
Man, the internet is terrible for shades of meaning.

In any case, I'd say you should try it out

Is @ACuriousMind running?

Starred message seems to suggest not
But reading the chat around that message shows "I haven't said yet [...]"

Which?

So not decided
The one with 4 stars.

6:58 PM
That message makes it sound like he'd be disinclined.

Read my above messages :P

Hey @dmckee @DavidZ how much time do y'all spend per day on mod duties?

I'm also curious
On HSM it's pretty light---about 15 minutes per day suffices---but I wonder how it scales

Also, while we're on this topic, if anyone around here is going to be a mod, I vote for @ACuriousMind.
6

Obvious :P

7:04 PM
Oh jeez. Now I'm getting out of band messages saying to go for mod. @Danu what have you done?

@DanielSank I honestly have no idea. I do it in little batches throughout the day - whenever I get distracted with work, I'll pop in and clear a few easy flags, close any obviously close-worthy posts I see on the front page, that sort of thing.

@DavidZ Indeed.

If I had to guess, probably between 15 minutes and an hour per day.

@DanielSank Out of band?

@Danu Not in this chat room.

7:05 PM
@DanielSank Oh. Lol

@BernardMeurer Have you seen the lamp dance from Naïve Melody?

Lamp dance?
Or lap dance? ;)

@HDE226868 Not sure

@Danu I meant what I typed, and I typed what I meant.
@BernardMeurer It starts at around 4:30 here.

HOME
Is where I want to be
But I guess I'm already there
I come home, she lifted up her wings

7:09 PM
@DavidZ Thanks.

I guess that this must be the place

So what's the deal, @ACuriousMind you gunna run for office?

@DavidZ That's significantly less than I expected

@Danu 1) How does one run? 2) Is there a description of being a mod?

@DanielSank 1) It'll be obvious when the elections start. THere is a first round with (self-)nominations.
2) There is, I think, but I don't know if I can find it right now.
Lemme check my SE bookmarks

Q: Moderator Cheat Sheet

user149432As an alternative to the other FAQ format being fleshed out here on Meta Stack Exchange, I'd like to propose something far more terse that covers the bare essential mechanics of being a moderator. Feel free to add more questions, but keep them short: this isn't the place to get into complex mod...

@Danu well, like I said, I'm just guessing.
For the record, I believe that the people best qualified to be moderators are generally those who don't want the job.

@DavidZ Well, unless they actually don't want it ;)

The Buddhist attitude is the best one ;)

7:17 PM
Oh well. @Danu one of the mods' jobs is to correct sock-puppet voting. Since I run this entire site through sock-puppet accounts, I think I'm automatically disqualified. Conflict of interest and all that.

@DanielSank Lel
The sockpuppet stuff is the most fun part of the job, IMO :D

Polite cough. Guys, guys. We all know who you really want as your new moderator. Polishes fingernails.

::wonders how fingernails are related to being a mod::
@JohnDuffield You should know, I love that banana.

::contains explosion::

@JohnDuffield Bananas? I like your views!

7:20 PM
LOL!

It's one of my favorite things on the internet.

@DanielSank The routine stuff can be cleared up in 15--30 minutes most days. But there is sometimes some not-so-routine stuff to look after,and that can add up.

@dmckee but that's also the more rewarding stuff (in my experience)

I'm onto chapter 10. How a magnet works.

@JohnDuffield Chapter 10 of what?

7:21 PM
Until fairly recently it was common for one of us to have the time to cover that less routine stuff even if the other didn't. But it's been getting more troublesome.

Reading or writing?
@dmckee Hence the call for more mods?

@dmckee Right.

@DanielSank : The Physics Detective.

@JohnDuffield Reading or writing?

It's kind of a book. Written in word. Hence the equations.

7:22 PM
@JohnDuffield Are you reading it or writing it?

@JohnDuffield Please, write in LaTeX instead of word.

@DanielSank : writing it.
@Danu : sorry, I'm writing it in word.

@Danu Dude, people gunna do what people gunna do.

@JohnDuffield MathML?

@JohnDuffield I see. Intended for lay people or scientists?

7:23 PM
@DanielSank ?
I hope you address the concerns of the ICP...

@Danu -_-

@DanielSank 10/10
I vow to never pass up an opportunity to reference that song.
"Magic everywhere in this bitch"

@ACuriousMind We can nuke brand new accounts, but not established ones. And even that action is reversible by the team in case we go off the reservation.

@BernardMeurer : yes. I was telling Obliv how you display the latex equation as MathMl code, then copy it, stick an XML header line in, then paste it into word. Paste this into word.

Also I don't own Word

7:27 PM
@JohnDuffield That better be an impressive equation!

@DanielSank : I intended it for scientists, but now I'm thinking I intend it for lay people who are interested in physics.

@JohnDuffield This is a great example of why I never use Word.

^

@JohnDuffield Indeed. Perhaps I will acquire a copy and review it on Eightfold Way, my new blog.

@Danu : it isn't. It's from this answer. It's long-winded like all XML, but that doesn't really matter. You're just copying and pasting.

7:30 PM
@DanielSank After the 60's pheno model?

@JohnDuffield Hey man, whatever floats your boat.

Or after Buddhism? :P

@DanielSank : I'm thinking I'll just put it up on a website.

@DanielSank So pheno it is :P

7:31 PM
@Danu Did you miss the part about octopuses?
@JohnDuffield Very good.

@DanielSank Yeah yeah :P

Then I can perhaps link to specific sections.

@JohnDuffield You just just create a blog

Wat?

I didn't know you were interested in QFT pheno

7:32 PM
@Danu I'm not.

Okay :) So octopi after all ^^

I'm interested in physics and octopuses. "Eightfold Way" makes nice contact to both.

This name was subject of long discussion, and the other options were much, much worse iirc
I still think "Daniel's Blog" was the bets name though

@BernardMeurer Well yes I did reject your suggestion of "Linux 4 Lyfe".

lol
I remember I gave a stupid suggestion, but now I don't recall what it was

7:34 PM
@BernardMeurer You should write one called "Super Potato".

@DanielSank dude, good idea
OH
MY
GOD

It will chronicle your path toward installing Linux on a potato.

PotatOS!

hahahahahaha

How could this have escaped me for so long

7:36 PM
"Super Potato" also makes contact with the famous retro video game shop in Akihabara

Did you go there?

Yes.

Sweet

@ACuriousMind Why would an absorb/reemit scattering mechanism not work with monatomic gases?

8:29 PM
@johnD thanks, I'll give it a try.

@Obliv No tex2png for you, eh?

@DanielSank My QM prof said Griffiths is terrible

i dislike using png if possible. @daniel
i mean images in general not just .png lol

8:52 PM
I've already complained before, but I still hate the U.S.
I've spent seventeen years confused on whether pounds are a measurement of mass or force
Today I found out it can mean both
Our country makes no sense whatsoever

yeah
I had to give an answer on a mechanical engineering final in pounds mass

@SirCumference Oh indeed, and measuring body weight in "stone" is more sensible?

don't know if I got it right or not.

@0celo7 It is.

@0celo7 I've heard people say "a 15-newton object" and a "1.5kg object"

8:59 PM
@DanielSank He said the people doing bad on our homeworks have had QM in undergrad, but using Griffiths

When they say "15 pound" object, what am I supposed to think?

so he has to go very slowly for them

Also, I don't know why we define a second by the natural periodicity of the radiation of a cesium-133 atom. Couldn't we just divide the length of a day into 24, then by 3600, as we used to? Why come up with that nutty definition?

what's a day?

The time it takes for the Earth to completely rotate about its axis?

9:04 PM
haha implying that's constant

haha implying that's gonna change significantly any time soon

it varies from day to day

Average it out
Standard deviation can't be much

it changes every time there's a large earth quake
also how do you even measure it precisely
it's a nutty definition for a reason.

@0celo7 24 hours. Is that better?

9:06 PM
@0celo7 It changes by microseconds

@Obliv what's an hour
@SirCumference are you being stupid on purpose

@0celo7 Dude, give me a source

blah blah what are minutes blah blah seconds something about half-life of an isotope blah
@0celo7 you're like an 8 y/o

@sirC what are microseconds?

9:07 PM
@Obliv That thing we're trying to define!

@Obliv what?
@SirCumference it's not worth arguing

@0celo7 I guess the amount of time until a distant star in the night sky reaches the same right ascension and declination

I thought you were going to say, "What's an 8 y/o?"

if you don't think the duration of a day being variable when you're trying to define a second with it is bad, then I don't know
I just don't know

@0celo7 i didn't know we still used that definition. Don't we use something a bit less arbitrary these days?

9:10 PM
@0celo7 Giving a source isn't arguing...

Is there a way to help users like this?

@SirCumference oh lol didn't even see this post. now i see why @0celo7 is ticked

@SirCumference you're too far gone

@0celo7 Explain dammit

@DanielSank Depends I suppose.
Some people seem to feel they are entitled to go through life without encountering any criticism. That makes it pretty hard to help them because they have to recognize that feeling as a fault before they can grow.

9:15 PM
Pot. Kettle.

Since when did you care about geology?

But we don't, at this point, actually know if that poster is among them.

@0celo7 At this point I hope you're trolling me

@Obliv But to how many decimal places can you determine the halflife of a sample?

@dmckee I love you

9:17 PM
Keep in mind that you have to deal with counting statistics when you do that.

9:50 PM
What is going on in here
@dmckee I'm being trolled by a basic nuclear kinetics problem

@JohnDuffield making tea, are you?

@dmckee part c makes no sense
Don't I need to know the energy of the initial thermal neutron first?
a) and b) are easy
is the 160MeV just the two daughter atoms or the the two atoms + the 4 neutrons?

@JohnRennie don't seem to remember saying LaTeX were easy. Then again, neither is Word.

why it's so important to use which one of the software packages/languages to prepare docs??

@2physics One of them lends itself to easily sharing content, editing, version control, is open source, and works on Windows, Mac and Linux.
The other has none of those properties.
As a member of the scientific, nay, technical community of the world, I am interested in people using tools with the set of properties listed above.

9:59 PM
@DanielSank after having had to write a thesis in word as my supervisor isn't willing to use TeX, I can also say that although word is not too bad anymore, TeX IS more comfortable to use if you have gotten used to it a bit ...
