4:00 PM
ffs I'm not going to the doctor for a cold @MAFIA36790

user116211
Maybe it's not cold.

user228700
@0celo7 Huh. You know, u not being hungry may also not have anything to do with ur cold or anything-that's just acidity.

user116211
Maybe it is the sign of some severe disease.

In any case, I feel way better than yesterday.

user228700
@MAFIA36790 Are u a hypochondriac?

user228700
4:02 PM
@0celo7 If you chest starts hurting, that's also acidity, since u haven't eaten in awhile, so don't freak out BTW.

user116211
No. I do extrapolate a situation.

user228700
@MAFIA36790 Clearly :-P

@MAFIA36790 What is an "isolated point"

user116211
Hmm. Well, let $x\in A\,.$

user228700
@JohnRennie I will check this out when I next feel like procrastinating :-P

4:05 PM
@JohnRennie You have less computers than I have books
I think you're fine.

user116211
Take any $\epsilon \gt 0: (x-\epsilon, ~x+\epsilon)\cap A = \{x\}\,.$

the hell are you doing

user116211
$x$ is isolated.

that's clearly False for all $\epsilon>0$.
You want $\exists\epsilon>0$.

user116211
;(

user116211
4:06 PM
I have not said $\forall$

"take any"
that means $\forall$

user116211
yes.

user116211
That does not mean for all positive quantities.

@Kaumudi, that video was pretty funny!

user116211
@0celo7 What?

4:06 PM
It has some good points.

user228700
@heather I know, right? :-D

user228700
Yes, yes it does.

user116211
I need to learn grammar ._.

user228700
The next time you feel like procrastinating, u can just tell the monkey in your brain to stfu :-P

=P

user228700
4:08 PM
It won't always work, but sometimes, it does :-P

user116211
But why do you need it? Are you working on a problem @0celo7?

user228700
I also like to remind myself how little time I have left using that chart of how many weeks I have left in my life :-P

I always become way less flexible when I'm sick.

user116211
ohh.

@Kaumudi wtf
@MAFIA36790 I am, actually.

user228700
4:09 PM
@0celo7 To stop procrastinating, dude.

@JohnRennie to make you feel better I will show you my addiction
at least part of it

user228700
I'm not that macabre, on most days :-P

user116211
@0celo7, I have an exam on probability theory tomorrow. I wish some heavy rain occurs.

user228700
@MAFIA36790 Classic Indian student XD

user228700
Did u hear about the Chennai floods last year @MAFIA36790?

user116211
4:10 PM
yes.

user228700
We had like two weeks off.

user228700
It was brutal, and was no fun at all...people were dying everywhere, but yeah, loads of holidays, obviously.

@JohnRennie

user116211
@0celo7 WoW!

user228700
My school sucks. They sent us pre-board papers to write at home and submit during the floods :-( @MAFIA36790

user116211
4:12 PM
@Kaumudi WTH.

Jesus
India is honestly crazy

Cool :-) You on a GR binge at the moment?

@JohnRennie No, GR dry spell
I'm so busy with school and Fallout 4 that I have no time for other stuff

user218912
@0celo7 help me plz

user228700
@MAFIA36790 Yeah x(

4:13 PM
I just got out my books to show you
Oh, I forgot one
oh well

Jesus I hate to think how tall the GR stack would be when you're actively working in it :-)
There is another laptop on ebay tonight that I'm thinking of buying ...

@JohnRennie I think I'll do mathematical GR for my senior thesis

user218912
@0celo7 can you skype for a sec please?

no

user218912
please? :(

4:16 PM
You can ask me here.

user218912
it's not qft

What is it then?

user218912
life related.

ask it here

@Kaumudi, being on the TED website reminded me of randall munroe's ted talk, so I just watched that
and now I'll do what I'm actually supposed to do lol =P

4:17 PM
Mojn

oh please @heather
in middle school you have nothing to do

user218912
@0celo7 alright fine.

user116211
No girl talk, please.

user218912
no it's not

user218912
it's physics related

user116211
4:18 PM
:)

@0celo7, yeah I do! I've got social studies homework and I have to do some stuff for the new site Physics Problems Q&A. Besides, I procrastinate on my own projects as well.

user218912
basically I'm fucked

@MAFIA36790 What is wrong with you

@obe, I'm sorry

@MAFIA36790 Aha
A point is isolated if $\{x\}$ is open
Says it right above the theorem :P
@obe why?
@heather social studies?

user218912
4:20 PM
the department wants me out of qft

@0celo7, history and all that

user218912
because i did something bad

user116211
@obe Why?

Huh? What did you do

Call me stupid, but does qft mean "quantum field theory" in this context ?

user116211
4:21 PM
yes.

user218912
I dropped my freshman physics course and said it's useless... because I got into an argument with the prof.

what was the argument?

user218912
though I still have A+ in qft as of right now.

what was it about ?

user116211
@obe So, your prof doesn't like argument?

user218912
4:22 PM
mostly because I made a dumb move and decided to drop it

why would you do that?

user218912
Idk what I was thinking at the time

@MAFIA36790 If a compact Hausdorff space has no isolated points, it is uncountable.
Corollary: R is uncountable.

user116211
Ohh, that's what you are working on.

@obe so what about the department?

4:24 PM
@obe profs are human too. Go back to the prof and grovel.

user116211
The weather is clear tomorrow, just when I wanted the rain more.

wait, so you were arguing about compact Hausdorff spaces with your prof, you ended up dropping the class, and now the department wants to kick you out?

user218912
@0celo7 they're like I was only allowed to take qft if I take first year physics bla bla bla.

Seems reasonable

user116211
@obe Why did you drop it then?

4:25 PM
^

You need first year physics to graduate, presumably.

user218912
yes

can you re-add it? or maybe take the tests outside of the class, or whatever? make it up within some deadline?

@JohnRennie If I do GR for my thesis, should I do geometrical or analytical stuff?

user116211
At any cost, stick to geometry.

4:26 PM
@0celo7, whatever you'd rather become very familiar with =P

@heather both
but in a ~60 page document there is hardly room for both

@0celo7, do both anyway =P
Seriously, though, whatever is more "fun" for you.

The analytical would be way more work

user218912
@heather no

@obe, can you re-take the class ever?

4:27 PM
Hyperbolic group = down, currently reading small cancellation theory and hopefully after that I can go back to the finite group article

Just today I have spent 15 hours nonstop reading group theory

@Secret, sounds like a good day =)

user218912
@heather I don't want to.

@0celo7 I think beauty lies in geometry ...

It will be a lot more relaxing if I don't procrastinate for 4 days starting from yesterday

@JohnRennie wth

4:28 PM
now I am trying to catch up "progress"

@obe, but how then will you graduate? is there any equivalent class you could take? or could you take the final exam? or, I don't know...darn, this is bad.

@0celo7 what?

"progress"= that nagging feeling of falling behind despite there is rally no hurry at all

@Ocelo7 How would you show that $\left( T_{p}^{\ast }M\right) ^{\mathbb{C} }=\left( T_{p}M^{\mathbb{C} }\right) ^{\ast }$ on a general complex manifold ?

user116211
@Secret Good!

user218912
4:29 PM
basically my only choice now is to do math undergrad or beg them to do something for me.

@PhysicsGuy $T_pM^\Bbb{C}=T_pM\otimes_\Bbb R\Bbb C$?

user116211
@obe Hmm; I would say join math undergrad course.

@obe, begging is good

@JohnRennie it's geometrical analysis

user116211
@0celo7 As I said.

4:30 PM
@0celo7 still beautiful

I hope my memory correlations will continue to stitch together all those wikipedia articles when I am asleep or daydreaming, as it is found that my present performance on group theory is not very good in the maths chat answering two basic proof questions wrongly

@Ocelo7 I don't know whether it can be written like a real tangent space tensored with the complex numbers. Should that be proved first ?

why can questions with an open bounty not be closed :O that's kind of a shame

user218912
@heather that's pretty low

@PhysicsGuy how else are you defining the complex tangent space?

4:32 PM
@obe, it seems like although you could move to math undergrad, you really excel at QFT.

user218912
I'm doing ok.

@Ocelo7 Wait wait, who talked about compact spaces ?

I'm ill, apologies.

user116211
@obe, maths is a good option.

@obe, so I would arrange a private meeting with whomever is the head of the department and explain the situation as best you can, and explain that you regret your decision, and ask if there's anyway too make up the class, as some sort of exception.

4:33 PM
@JohnRennie Doesn't stuff like this excite you?

and when i say beg, I mean act polite, sorry, etc because you are, not bowing before them and pleading and crying - it isn't low, it is what's only appropriate

@Ocelo7 It's the tangent space of a complex manifold. A complex manifold isn't just the tensor product of a real mf and $\mathbb{C}$

user218912
they insulted me though, I didn't tell you that.

@obe what did they say?

user116211
@obe What?

user116211
4:35 PM
You should definitely not go then.

user116211
Just apply for maths.

@PhysicsGuy Bruh, what does $(T_p^*M)^\Bbb C$ even mean unless you define $(\cdot)^\Bbb{C}$ to be $\cdot\otimes_\Bbb R\Bbb C$?

@Ocelo7 Wait.....

A complex manifold is also a real manifold

@obe, yes, what did they say? if it was severe enough you can complain to a higher up person

4:37 PM
@Ocelo7 Yes, it's defined like that, my mistake

@MAFIA36790 he hates math
@PhysicsGuy ok then

user218912
@0celo7 it's kind of funny, the freshman physics prof said I'm a crackpot. (he actually said it) and he said that with no evidence of anything. (I didn't show anything in first year physics and he did not know my mark in qft)

user218912
i'm like wtf?

lol

@obe You sound like a typical smart young guy who thinks he knows everything (no offense intended), fresh outta high school and on top of the world. This might have annoyed some people.
4

4:38 PM
@PhysicsGuy so, you just need to find a natural isomorphism between those two things
@obe If you called my class "useless" I'd rip you a new one too.

@obe, I think, no offense, you kinda need to swallow your pride here and just apologize. Don't let some dumb prof mess up your college visit, I mean, you paid money for it.

user116211
@obe He said that out of nowhere?

I'm not sure "crackpot" is the correct thing to say though.

user116211
I was thinking of Lumo.

user218912
@MAFIA36790 that was the first thing he said lol and then I left

user116211
4:41 PM
Okay, then there is some issue here; you need to report it in the Physics Dept.

user218912
it get's worse

user218912
freshman physics prof is also the chair of the dep :o

oh (::some expletive here::)

user218912
@Danu my qft prof supports me though, he knows i'm doing well and trying hard and I guess he's my only hope here.

that's too bad

user116211
4:43 PM
@obe What? How?

@obe You're obviously not telling us the whole story.

I think we need some more background here

user218912
like what?

user218912
@Danu scroll up?

user116211
I'm not aware of US universities, that's right too.

4:44 PM
@obe No professor would even bother talking to you unless you said something first.
So he definitely didn't just walk up to you and say "yo you're a crackpot"

user218912
@Danu yes, I called his class useless and dropped it then he wanted to talk to me and called me a crackpot when I came to his office, then I left.

user218912
that's the whole story.

I don't believe that he'd say "crackpot" unless you said much more than "this class is useless".

@Danu I have seen worse by professors ... but well, hard to tell from afar

user218912
@Danu why?

user218912
4:46 PM
I was surprised too.

calling a class useless to a professor is however not the most intelligent thing to do either

user218912
@Danu I didn't say anything else, that's why I'm saying he based that off of no evidence.

user218912
which is surprising.

it seems like you need to talk to your QFT professor and maybe someone higher up, outside the department, and get some things straightened out here
@obe

user116211
@heather The Freshman Prof. is in the chair.

4:50 PM
@obe I still don't believe that you're telling the full story. In any case, calling the class useless in his face was a big mistake and now you'll have to make it up to him. Just remember not to do something like that ever again.

@MAFIA36790, I know, I said the QFT professor, who is on @obe's side, and someone outside of the department, as in, not the chair of the department

user218912
@Danu hmmm... I don't know why you think this but can you give an example of what you think I did to make him say that?

Who knows what you said
But "crackpot" is not a response to "this class is useless"

user218912
@0celo7 no these are on separate days.

which might make people (me included) think that you said something else

user116211
4:56 PM
Anyways, what happened is not good; either apply for maths or ask him for some time to clear between you two the concerned issue. Also, I would mostly avoid dull/bad classes; but dropping from the course is not the answer @obe.

@obe, yes, but you don't just walk into someone's office and get called a crackpot! yes, you called his class useless and he asked you to talk, but that doesn't equal crackpot.

user218912
@heather also dropped it.

@obe, right, but that isn't like "oh, you're a crackpot" that's more like "you're making a dumb decision" (from the professor's point of view)
which, why are you so upset with his class?

user218912
because they don't accept advanced answers and force you to buy a $300 book to be able to do the problem sets (assigned from book)

Did you say "this class is useless for CMT" or something?
I think there was more to that useless comment
wtf is an "advanced answer"

user116211
5:00 PM
@obe What advanced answer?

user218912
@0celo7 well I also said I don't need it for what I'm doing.

user116211
Also, how can one force you?

user218912
@0celo7 like using something they didn't teach in class.

@MAFIA36790, they require the book to do the sets, right?

@obe aha

5:01 PM
Stupid question: How does Liouville's theorem, that $\int_V dP_i dQ_i = \int_v dp_i dq_i$ under canonical transformations, i.e. that the Jacobian is unity, galileoandeinstein.physics.virginia.edu/7010/… relate to Liouville's theorem that $d\rho/dt = 0$ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… ???

you're right, it is a stupid question

user116211
@obe my prof also gets pissed up when I write some thing that he didn't cover.

@obe, but okay, that is stupid, but still, how is that such a big deal? Why did that cause you to call his class useless to the professor's face and drop it?

did you check Arnold?

user218912
I was acting autistic... I do that a lot.

user116211
5:03 PM
@obe What? Really?

user218912
what do you mean?

He has some mess, like a mix of both but it's not clear how they really link

@obe, well if it's something like that, can't you be excused from it? (I don't mean to sound offensive at all here, but if it is a medical condition, can't you make a request based on special circumstances?)

user218912
lol

what? did I miss something?

user218912
5:05 PM
no I just think it's funny.

I don't think you can claim autism as a medical reason for being a dick

user116211
^

@0celo7 Schematically, the curvature tensor is $- (abc - acb + ab^ec_e - ac^eb_e)$, i.e. $R^d_{abc} = - ( \Gamma^d_{ab,c} - \Gamma^d_{ac,b} + \Gamma_{ab}^e \Gamma_{ce}^d - \Gamma_{ac}^e \Gamma_{be}^d)$ so now you can't forget it.

oh...then ignore that whoops
just trying to help and clearly failing =P

user218912
I'll just switch to math

user218912
5:07 PM
force myself to like math

user116211
@obe yes.

user116211
But you can go for a last talk with the Chair of Phys. too.

user218912
because if I stay in physics I will have to retake freshman physics next year which is ridiculous :p

@bolbteppa I can remember the curvature tensor

user218912
nah I don't wanna see him.

user218912
5:08 PM
I'll switch to math

@obe, I think that's exactly the wrong thing to do (switching to math)

@obe For once in your life, stick with something.

you paid for this! Don't "force yourself" do what you actually want to do!

user116211
@obe okay; maths is good; you will do set theory now.

@MAFIA36790, why are you recommending this?! It's a bad idea

user218912
5:09 PM
tell that to 0celo7 :o

user116211
I hate my place as they don't teach set theory in undergrad course ;(

@0celo7 your derivation of the Jacobi equation in some answer, following Straumann, is woefully over-complicated - you can derive the curvature tensor directly by just writing out $\frac{D^2 v^{\mu}}{Dt^2}$ for $v^{\mu} = \partial x^{\mu}(t,s)/ \partial s$ as a sequence of obvious equalities, giving the best derivation of the Curvature tensor I have now of 4

user218912
I think I should stop being so close minded and have respect and interest for all fields like math.

@obe, come on. Talk to your QFT professor, see if he'd be willing to help you out here. There are solutions other than switching
It's not about being close-minded, it's about not letting one mistake get you out of what you want to do

user218912
I heard mathematicians work in CMT too

user218912
5:11 PM
i'm fine with that

@obe, SO WHAT?! (sorry, I don't mean to yell, but you're acting kind of the wrong way here)

user116211
You want to be mathematician or physicist, @obe?

2
Q: Are the Jacobi equation and the geodesic deviation equation related?

Stan ShunpikeOn page 111 in his book Riemannian Geometry, Manfredo Do Carmo states what he calls the Jacobi equation \begin{equation} \frac{D^2J}{dt^2} + R(\gamma'(t),J(t))\gamma'(t) = 0 \end{equation} where $\gamma$ is a geodesic. Note, here we are dealing with Riemannian manifolds. Here's the Wikipe...

user218912
@MAFIA36790 I don't know.

user218912
I'm having an existential crisis now.

user116211
5:13 PM
That's not good.

@bolbteppa it's rigorous
I know you despise rigor so of course you don't like (understand) what I wrote there

'First we consider this thing, next we consider this other thing, and magic, it worked'
Even a calculus student could work out $\frac{D^2 v^{\mu}}{D t^2}$ without knowing what they'll get and end up with the curvature tensor

@obe, here's what I would do. i'd let yourself and the professor calm down. After around a week, I'd talk to the QFT professor and explain the situation and ask him for help. He can give you better advice because he knows more about your university and professors. I would NOT switch to math because of this.

5:36 PM
30 messages moved to Trashcan

$R_{fbcd} = g_{fa}R^a_{bcd} = - g_{fa}(\Gamma^a_{bc,d} - \Gamma^a_{bd,c} + \Gamma^e_{bc} \Gamma_{de}^a - \Gamma_{bd}^e \Gamma_{ce}^a) = - \frac{1}{2} (g_{fc,bd} - g_{fd,bc} + g_{bd,fc} - g_{bc,fd})$ you can see a similar pattern if you write it this way I guess

1 hour later…
6:55 PM
where could one find information about superconductors and how magnetic they are?

@heather u mean like a way to determine the strength of magnetic fields of superconductors?

@heather CRC Handbook

@Obliv, I think that is what I want, yes.
@Loong, okay, thank you, I'll look into that.
I just need to figure out which superconductor has the following properties:
1. is the least magnetic
2. is fairly machinable; i.e., can be etched
3. operates as a superconductor at 2mK

@heather i'm guessing by 1. you're referring to the meissner effect?

@Obliv, I have not heard of it by that name, but yes, I believe so.

7:03 PM
@heather they don't seem very challenging requirements. Lead, tin and mercury would all fit.

@JohnRennie, yes, but #1 is very key, there has to be no magnetic moments in the material.

@JohnRennie Does the powdery tin allotrope still exist at those temperature? If so tin in probably not suitable for any application involving mechanical stress.

7:17 PM
@heather in the superconducting regime won't the magnetic behaviour be dominated by the superconductivity? Things like the magnetic susceptibility above the transition will be irrelevant.

@JohnRennie, the reason it can't have unintended magnetic moments is so that it doesn't interfere with other delicate processes.

That's awfully vague ...

@obe dude it's annoying af to have to take classes where you learn almost nothing from, paying for txtbooks,etc, just so you can meet some b.s. requirements. I get that. But, you gotta play the system or else you won't be able to do what you want, probably.

@JohnRennie, for example, if there are magnetic moments that were there because of some ion, it has a not insignificant probability of ruining the calculation then occurring. (I suppose I neglected to mention that this is in the context of quantum computers.)

@obe I'd go with the advice above and try reconciling things with the department being as least sperg as you can. If that doesn't work you could always transfer uni's like you said you wanted before. you'll prob end up graduating a bit later than usual but that shouldn't be a problem i think.

7:42 PM
can you upload, say, a pdf or another form of text file into the chat?

It's possible to post a link to anything if you can upload it to another site, but you can't upload a PDF the way you can upload an image

@DavidZ, okay, thanks

P.S. "text file" typically excludes PDFs

okay...can you upload text files?

No, at least not in the same way you'd upload an image , but you can copy and paste them into the posting box
If they're not too long

7:46 PM
yeah...it's 23 pages.

Ah, I'm pretty sure that's too long :-P

right? =P

You could use something like Pastebin, or a Github Gist, or put it in a Dropbox public folder

but I need to share it somehow. darn. thanks, though!
okay
thanks!

What do you need to share in chat that's 23 pages, anyway? Just out of curiosity

7:50 PM
for the new physics problems site, I wrote a draft Terms and Conditions/Privacy Policy/Legal stuff that I need to go through with @Mew and @S007, and when it's done we'll need to post it to the site.

ah, gotcha

yeah, it took a while, and was incredibly mind-numbing.
=P

Nobody wants to read 23 pages of legal text to sign up for a website either!

yeah...it's more like "you agree to terms and conditions (link) when signing up" and then in some never-visited spot, there's the 23 pages of madness.
just have to have everything covered, I guess.

I guess so. Though I often wonder how much of it is really necessary.

7:53 PM
it's mostly based on stack exchange's policy, obviously with the necessary changes
but reading through it, most of it seemed like common sense stuff for the people that don't have common sense =P

Yeah, exactly. I figure most of the stuff is there because of the slight possibility that somebody makes a stupid complaint, but it's irrelevant to ordinary members.

yep. hope @Mew sees it soon, because there are a few changes to be made that I'm not sure about.
stuff like address and country and all that.
anyway, now I've got social studies homework to do (because stack exchange always comes before homework, lol)

oh of course :-P

@heather sometimes I have a hard time believing you're a middleschool student. lol

@Obliv, why do you say that?

8:05 PM
Well, it's not a bad thing at all but you're very intellectually developed at a pretty young age. Coming from where I grew up, I didn't think it was possible to be like you @heather

@Obliv, (::red-faced::) thanks =)
sweet, now that homework is done. time for coding...the 12th Euler problem awaits =P

8:40 PM
@0celo7 do u know the proof for determinant of hessian matrix resolves the local extrema test for multivar functions?
like it makes sense without a proof kind of. I tried building it up myself by doing the 2nd derivative test for single var functions for each 2nd partial of f(x,y)
kind of contradiction in logic somewhere can't quite find it

Q: Manual tag ordering

Effervescenza NaturaleAfter I put some tags in a question in a certain order, the site sorts them as it finds best (sort of 'from the more to the less general', probably). At the same time, it seems that the order has importance. For example, the very first tag is prefixed to the question title in my browser bar. I do...

9:54 PM
@dmckee Are you around LaTeX wiz?

@BernardMeurer What sort of LaTeX help do you need?

@Obliv are you asking why the Hessian matrix tells you whether it's a minimum, maximum, or extremum? The idea behind that is exactly the same as in 1D, where it's the second derivative that tells you that.

I used to get nice titles like this using maketitlw
\title{Lógica \& realimentação proporcional}
\date{4 de Novembro de 2016}
\author{Bernardo Meurer\\
        \texttt{86242}
        \and
        Maria Adelaide Ambrósio\\
        \texttt{87064}
        \and
        Inês Coelho\\
        \texttt{87022}}
And this as the code
I'm trying to get the same result, but without the maketitle
so how do I get text lined like that manually?

I'd probably use a tabular environment

@ACuriousMind Teach?

Three center-aligned columns, no lines

Well I wonder why it's the determinant that lets you know whether or not it's positive-definite or not

You can also use \hfill to push things around. I do that a lot for quickie jobs.

but I did some snooping and figured it'd take a lot of algebra before i'm comfortable understanding the generalized local extrema test

@ACuriousMind Let me try

9:59 PM
(involves determining if a multilinear map is positive-definite or something I think)

Something like
