4:00 PM
@KyleKanos Fine, fine, currently procrastinating actually doing things for my master's thesis

2 days ago, by Bernard Meurer
@heather I hate it, love it, like it, and dislike it
(Go to the log, the joke comes next)

@BernardMeurer, it was funny once I understood it =P

@ACuriousMind Are you writing your thesis in German or English?
Or Italian, I dunno

@BernardMeurer English

Oh...WTF happened with Chris White, since it was mentioned after that comment

4:01 PM
@KyleKanos Left forever
Deleted account

I noticed that, but he leave any reasons why?

@KyleKanos No, he didn't state any reason.

Also, I did get a chuckle out of the OpenMP joke

@KyleKanos Got in a fight with JD, said something no one knows what but apparently horrible, got suspended and lost room owner stats, quitted

@BernardMeurer Ouch.

4:02 PM
There's, let's say, well-founded speculation, but nothing for certain

He was usually so rational, not sure I can believe that though

@KyleKanos Not saying the fight is why he quit, but those were the events as they happened from what I got after reading the chat log
He's now listed as user15something I think

Though I guess I'd feel pretty bad if some guy kept talking incorrectly about stuff I did for my doctorate

@BernardMeurer He didn't "get into a fight". He just made a comment he shouldn't have made and got chat-banned for that.

@ACuriousMind If it's bad enough he got banned I can argue it's a one-comment fight :P

4:04 PM
A one punch fight.
And the mods snapped his neck

But we don't know whether that was the reason he deleted his account or if there was something else going on, so let's not speculate further

@BernardMeurer, user10851

I actually wonder what he said, is there a physics equivalent to saying "Voldemort"
@KyleKanos He left because he and ACM were dating and ACM cheated on him with @JohnRennie. So then Chris tried revenge by going to bed with JD, that didn't work well though so he snapped on JD and it was all over then

Well that escalated pretty quickly

@BernardMeurer lol, your mind is a strange place

4:07 PM
@ACuriousMind Deny all you want, we know that it's the truth

(::insert non-mainstream physics theory here::) @BernardMeurer

Wtf your phone randomly clicks

MOND is pretty mainstream

@BernardMeurer It conflicts with the story of me being an AI, though

Wtf Apple

4:07 PM
ACM is an AI

@ACuriousMind There is a downside to the "Find creative solutions to problems" philosophy we programmers have
@ACuriousMind Ever seen the movie "Her"?
Jesus my whole house is shaking what is going on

@BernardMeurer nope

It's like I'm living in a vibrator, I bet it's that bloody hungarian
Her is a 2013 American romantic science fiction drama film written, directed, and produced by Spike Jonze. It marks Jonze's solo screenwriting debut. The film follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a man who develops a relationship with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an intelligent computer operating system personified through a female voice. The film also stars Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, and Olivia Wilde. Jonze conceived the idea in the early 2000s after reading an article about a website that allowed for instant messaging with an artificial intelligence program. After making I'm Here (2010...

I program a lot these days. I also write a lot of documents too

@ACuriousMind the guy dates an AI in it, it's a pretty cool movie

4:09 PM
@BernardMeurer You sure it's not an earthquake? :P

@ACuriousMind It stopped, whatever it was lol
@KyleKanos Do you know Ackermann's function?

@BernardMeurer Yes

@KyleKanos Want to see my arbitrary-precision, multithreaded, iterative, implementation of it in C++? :P

How high can it go to?

@ACuriousMind I don't understand PhD set theory. Is $f^{-1}((f(U^c))^c)\subset U$?

4:11 PM
@BernardMeurer That libels so many people I think it just created a flag event horizon. Flags just fall into it and become causally disconnected.

@KyleKanos I don't have enough computational power to get past (4,1) I think

@0celo7, that is nuts...
how do you even solve stuff like that??

you ask ACM and hopes he takes pity

Isn't F(4,3) = 2^16?

::humbly goes back to Naive Set Theory::

4:13 PM
WOOHOOO
DIE COMPUTER DIE

Nope. F(4,1) is 2^16-ish

@JohnRennie Lol, hope you liked my story

@BernardMeurer, I feel like I do that to the online Python interpreter I use every time I run a program =P

I've been doing a lot of Project Euler lately
It's like the only "fun" website I'm allowed to visit at work

Project Euler is awesome.

4:15 PM
@BernardMeurer Have you listened to Denzel Curry?

CPU usage 695%
That's what I'm talking about
94C on the CPU
Time to stop

"htop"
TIL computers do homotopy theory

I'm actually kinda terribly at Proj Euler. I usually get the brute-force solutions and optimize them and then pass it off to my co-worker who is a math PhD

@KyleKanos I've heard of this project euler, are the problems cool?
Like, do they make your PC cry?

I'm currently stuck on problem 574
@BernardMeurer They're awfully mathy (mostly probability theory and number theory).

4:17 PM
@heather In my experience the TI-89 series of graphing calculators are differentiated from most other calculators by the their insistence on correct parenthesis in expressions. Where "correct" means "more than humans use when scrawling down math in a context then understand" with the result that users of the damn things often get numerically incorrect answer because their calculator interprets it's input differently than they meant it.

Bah, they're just maths problems

The problems are designed such that there is a solution that can be done in less than one minute using a "standard" computer

@dmckee What's your calculator of choice? (Say a slide-rule and we'll fight)

Bob uses a slide rule

Students who are not thoroughly comfortable with numbers often fail to notice that this has happened and then submit incorrect problems.

4:18 PM
PARI/GP is the only answer to "what is the best calculator"

@BernardMeurer Nah. The slide rule is just for show.

Though Sage is coming close

I run a HP 11C.

@KyleKanos Can't use that on my chemistry exam

@BernardMeurer Debatable.

4:19 PM
you don't need a calculator for grad quantum mechanics usually

Can't use as per their rules. You are not physically incapable of doing so

@dmckee Jeez, you are old school :P
@KyleKanos I can run Linux on my calculator though

@0celo7 I actually think so if you mean subseteq - but wait for ACM

So I guess maybe I could put that on Linux and run it from inside the calculator
That would be funny

@Sanya I think so too, but I get lost trying to verify it

4:20 PM
@BernardMeurer Yeah, and it's slow. HP made a faster version of the 12C (a business and accounting calculator from the same era) available, but they have steadfastly refused to update the 11C, 15C or 16C.

@0celo7 I do, I gotta calculate like the E of a single photon being ejected out of my profs ass

$\subset$ means $\subseteq$

Everyone I know who uses them keeps tabs on the others: so we can get their calculators when they die.

@dmckee Does it solve integrals?
@dmckee Lol, that's pretty hardcore

@BernardMeurer Nope. Though it doesn accumulate population statistics for you.

4:21 PM
@dmckee do you remember what calculator I told you my dad uses?
You were impressed

@0celo7 Was that the 15C? I wanted one, but couldn't afford it.

I smell burnt plastic
Time to stop the ackermann calculator
JESUS 103C

@BernardMeurer Stop thinking so much then
2

STAHP

@dmckee HP41

4:22 PM
@KyleKanos Lol, smart

Random guy from Space Exploration SE here. There is an orbital mechanics question that has been up for a couple of months (regarding if a type of transfer orbit is always of a certain type or not). Our community is not that large, so we may not have people who are able to answer it. To finally get it answered, I have offered a 500 rep bounty. </bothering physics people>
6

@KyleKanos Do you have a super-computer i can run this on?

@0celo7 My wife has one of those. Good machine, but it doesn't fit in a short pocket and almost no one actually know how to use most of the functions.

@BernardMeurer, build a raspberry pi supercomputer! =D

why would you put a calculator in a pocket?

4:23 PM
@BernardMeurer the laptop has a Dell warranty till March 2017, so you're fine :-)

@BernardMeurer I've got a 12-core blade at work that I use daily

I don't think number theory violates the terms of the warranty.

@heather I'm a college student. I am poor
@KyleKanos Please? :3

@BernardMeurer Do you want my access to the ORNL cluster?

It likely will not get to A(4,2)

4:25 PM
@JohnRennie Be honest, what did this computer do to you so you'd send it to me?
@KyleKanos I dream of one day getting there

You saw the video ...

There's like 19 thousand digits in that answer

@0celo7 YES
Let's break the university!

Not the university
Oak Ridge National Lab
3rd fastest computer in the world

@BernardMeurer, maybe I can ask my dad, because he's got 4 Pis hooked up and they run Wolfram Mathematica in unison. So, if you can, you know, transfer it to Mathematica =)

4:26 PM
Yeah, yeah, let's wreck it

@0celo7 let $a \in f^{-1}((f(U^c))^c)$ then it follows that there is a $b \in f(U^c)^c$ with $b=f(a)$ which means $f^{-1}(b)=a \in U$ ?

@BernardMeurer Whenever I log in I have to agree to the ToS

@heather No clue on how to write what I did in C++ in mathematica :(

which includes prison time if I misuse the server

I also need a better multiprocessing implementation

4:27 PM
@BernardMeurer Almost guaranteed that it's Ackermann[m,n]

@0celo7 You're already imprisoned by your insecurities, you have nothing to lose
@KyleKanos But then it's lame :/

What the hell

@BernardMeurer, I'm terrible at Mathematica, but my dad knows a bit of C++ and he's good at Mathematica, but I don't know how in the universe to persuade him to rewrite the code and run it for you =(

@BernardMeurer That's Mathematica for you

They probably use recursive implementation, losers

4:27 PM
@BernardMeurer losers

Takes the fun out of programming by making dumb

@0celo7 Fixed

They probably have the answers hard-coded

@KyleKanos Lol, indeed they probably do

@BernardMeurer you need to listen to DC, got a light 8 from Fantano

4:28 PM
@0celo7 Bah, the man gives 8's away to anything nowadays
only 9's are special
I can't believe fucking Xiu Xiu got a 9
@KyleKanos Are you feeding me or not?

didn't he give to pimp a butterfly a 10?
Did you listen to that?

I'm hungry man, I only have beer

@BernardMeurer Negative. Feeding 4 kids is difficult enough

@0celo7 Yeah, he gave it a 10. Didn't listen to it yet
@KyleKanos :(
WILL TEACH CODING FOR FOOD

what are you feeding them?

4:30 PM
I can teach my kids coding. They probably should learn to do multiplication first though
@0celo7 Hamburgers

@KyleKanos Bah, nonsense

learn set theory first

The girls like them with mustard. The boy does not

then ring theory

@0celo7 Possibly useful for discrete mathematics

4:31 PM
No, first topology, @0celo7, you've got it all wrong, and then Banach spaces =P

Put Scratch in front of them and say "You only get food once you make a hello world"

@heather That's the unreasonable analyst in me
It's more reasonable to learn algebra first

Your wife may not be on board at first
@KyleKanos 3 girls one boy?

@KyleKanos No, there's no built-in Ackermann

you can add, wonderful

4:32 PM
My kids are 7, 5, 3 (x2) years old. Half of them can't spell
@EmilioPisanty Disappointing to hear :/

@EmilioPisanty Am I still blocked by you?
@KyleKanos 7?! How is this one not hacking the FBI yet?

@KyleKanos It made for a fun exercise on my MM course

@KyleKanos, that's why you do Scratch, there's drag and drop blocks, you don't have to spell

memoization on MM looks really weird at first go

@BernardMeurer Because that's illegal and I'm trying to raise law-abiding citizens?

4:33 PM
@EmilioPisanty If you still have Bernardo blocked, he is really sorry and would like to talk to you again

@heather Never heard of Scratch, assumed it was an IDE

@KyleKanos Nonsense

@KyleKanos, it is an MIT project, let me see if I can find it

@0celo7 I don't. If he's got interesting stuff to say I can respond.

4:34 PM
Besides, real programmers use either Vim or Emacs
Or Visual Studio

@EmilioPisanty So you aren't ignoring him?

@KyleKanos I used to use this to teach kids (~10) coding, it's a good first touch with programming
@KyleKanos I use Atom and Vim

There's also StarLogo Nova slnova.org

@0celo7 I don't have him formally blocked, but I won't discuss this further.

@EmilioPisanty jesus man

4:35 PM
I wonder if JD is still blocked

who is JD?

Duffy

@KyleKanos Banned from chat for a year

So I guess I'll probably not find out then
Was he chat-banned due to the CW event?

@KyleKanos Are you dancing?

4:36 PM
@KyleKanos He's alive and healthy, I think

@KyleKanos No, he hassled Shog9
and got ass-blasted

JD is alive and well, I talked with him earlier.
@KyleKanos No, CW was clearly in the wrong there.

Please do not discuss the reasons for other user's suspension. Thank you.

@BernardMeurer TBH, I never really ever celebrated anyone being banned or anything

A: Why does the Pauli exclusion principle not apply to bosons?

John Duffield Why does the Pauli exclusion principle not apply to bosons? Because a boson such as a photon has an E=hf wave nature, and two waves can be superposed. For a example you can grasp intuitively, think of two ocean waves. They can ride over one another and keep going, no problem. Two waves can o...

4:37 PM
there's all these users I've never heard of, but seem to have magical qualities

@KyleKanos Meh, you're a better person than I am

lol

@heather JD has the magical qualities of a sea cucumber

´@KyleKanos btw, what's your profile picture?

@EmilioPisanty :)

4:38 PM
@BernardMeurer, ?

@ACuriousMind a transformer

@heather Sea cucumbers are the most boring animals ever. That's my point

what????
they explode their insides as as defense mechanism

@BernardMeurer, oh. I guess everyone talks about Chris White, and Ron Maimon, and stuff.
@0celo7, seriously? Cool!

4:39 PM
@BernardMeurer their defense mechanism is pretty interesting, don't you think?

@ACuriousMind I just said that

@heather Chris White is an amazing guy. Wish you'd met the man
@ACuriousMind Meh, I do the same thing

@0celo7 Closer to Voltron than Transformers
I think I had a chance to meet him IRL, but I prefer my anonymity

@heather Porn isn't allowed here

4:40 PM
sea cucumber of awesome

looks like a rotten cucumber
moldy

Looks like a moldy slug

@BernardMeurer, what...? It's a sea cucumber!
You know, I'm not going to ask, nevermind.

@heather Yeah but it's naked

uhh

4:41 PM
I'm just confused now. Nevermind.

@Sanya where was that message you sent me?
I lost it

@heather That happens often?

Anyways, @KyleKanos, what brings you down here? Long time no see.

this chat is not exactly 14yo material

@KyleKanos, me being confused? Yeah, it happens a decent amount.

4:42 PM
@EmilioPisanty Uhh....boredom actually. Kids were watching TV, wife is out & I was cooking lunch

@KyleKanos fair enough

@KyleKanos Be honest, you just missed us

You don't need to find excuses :P

@BernardMeurer Eh. On occasion.

4:43 PM
@heather DON'T CLICK ON IT
@KyleKanos aha Called it

But then I remember that I've got a (fairly) pregnant wife and a few kids and an awesome job, then I forget about missing things that aren't that

@BernardMeurer, okay, I accidentally did so and then I exited the tab, so.
@KyleKanos, but I'm in middle school, so I'd like to think that I have an excuse.

@KyleKanos 5th kid coming your way? You're my hero man
@heather Don't listen to any of the crap @0celo7 links to you. Even his girlfriend can't handle it
@0celo7 Did you listen to brain tentacles on your way to Alabama?

@BernardMeurer Yes. Next week-ish

@BernardMeurer, I really need to stop trusting @0celo7 =P

4:45 PM
@KyleKanos Are you naming the kid Bernard?

@BernardMeurer Ryan has a girlfriend? Like a real one that people have met and interacted with?
@BernardMeurer Our choices are either Thomas or Elizabeth

@BernardMeurer We listened to The Book of Mormon and talked the rest of the way

@KyleKanos yep, he does. She's really nice actually, met her over Skype a while ago
@0celo7 Lame

@KyleKanos Since January, where have you been?

@KyleKanos Ah, because one of them is already called Bernard? :p

4:46 PM
@0celo7 Not here.

@0celo7 He has more children than you have kidneys, give the man a break

@BernardMeurer Nope.

@KyleKanos Heartbroken

@BernardMeurer I have a disease where I have 6....

@KyleKanos Honestly, those are good names though :)

@0celo7, not clicking...

@heather Smart

@0celo7, at least do it on a new line so I can see what video it is

okay, yeah, definitely no

4:48 PM
???

@KyleKanos Hope it all goes well next week(ish)!

What kind of girl are you

Who doesn't like Taylor Swift?

@heather This

4:49 PM
@0celo7, I enjoy electronic/alternative/rock myself.

electronic, aha

@0celo7 plenty of people

@heather Try that too

same as with any other genre

4:50 PM
Also, EVERYONE, any idea how they make those lights do that?

Ratatat, I think I've listened to that

@KyleKanos I don't think you ever did mention what your new job was

he's a quantum

@EmilioPisanty I'm a quant with a US bank

What's a quant?

4:51 PM
@KyleKanos ok

He quantizes people who can't afford the interest

yeah, not for me

@KyleKanos Is it Citibank? Can you fix my debt? Please help

@BernardMeurer Quantitative Analyst. I write software so traders can make better decision about how to gain or lose money
@BernardMeurer I'm pretty sure a trio of guys from Citi got fired and arrested for doing crap like that

@Sanya you there? I think one needs $f$ to be surjective for it to be true.

4:52 PM
loud pipes, that's it

@KyleKanos Badass

@BernardMeurer, try Loud Pipes by Ratatat

@KyleKanos Dammit, I had hopes

@heather electronic

@heather listening to that

4:53 PM
@0celo7, you have lost my music trust

@BernardMeurer Yeah, jail time is not something I'm interested in
2

what the hell

@0celo7, Taylor Swift?!

@KyleKanos Nah, I can't afford you going to jail until your kids all have a college degree

Who is Taylor Swift

4:54 PM
@KyleKanos She's a track runner

what kind of music do you even like

@KyleKanos, nobody worth listening to

@KyleKanos politician, I think

I wish taylor swift ran track, it would be funny

@heather wow
I take back what I said

@0celo7, wow what?

Heavy metal, but they replaced the guitar with a Sax
It's pretty fun

oh no

cool

the only good thing about that mess is the cover art

4:56 PM
If anyone wants to give me a christmas gift

@BernardMeurer Sounds like a weird idea

@KyleKanos It is, it's very weird

And I listen to some weird-ass music (pretty much all of it is video game remixes because it's free)

@KyleKanos I have what is almost unarguably the weirdest sounding CD of all times in my library

@BernardMeurer, also try Making Me Nervous and Dropping Out of School, both by Brad Sucks

4:59 PM
@heather You shouldn't be listening to a song called "Dropping Out of School" :p

@BernardMeurer, it's got a good beat =P
