6:08 PM
@0celo7 what the heck are you working on anyway? sounds like sexual harassment training
have you heard of the concept of "triggering"? a mostly american construction, mostly recent... very controversial

@vzn Yes.

vzn
@0celo7 for a school admission?

@vzn Yes.
It's quite infuriating.

vzn
@0celo7 college? US? do you have a url? is it open or not?

@vzn Yes. Yes. Yes. No.

vzn
6:10 PM
not too long ago had to do something like that for the "big corp" working for (which shall remain nameless). just like what you said earlier. "soap opera". quite dramatic! even more drama than some movies/ soap operas!
also online training tool... they had a (fictional) scenario where a man/ woman at work have relationship, breakup, & then (iirc) the woman blogs about it. lol! most excitement at work have heard about in yrs :P
there is a ton of stuff on the net about "trigger warnings". very "PC". eg this

> These texts, wrought with histories and narratives of exclusion and oppression, can be difficult to read and discuss as a survivor, a person of color, or a student from a low-income background.
Is this satire?

vzn
@0celo7 welcome to america! aka melting pot... have you ever visited? what state are you going to?

@KyleKanos The very act of setting a limit to the number of cigarettes per day however high renders the person de-addicted, doesn't it ?

@vzn Visited?
Literally in America.

He means have you visited the college...or not?

6:17 PM
TN

vzn
@0celo7 do you have foreign background? this stuff is new to you for some reason? (did not know you were in US... nobody says anything in their profiles these days)

The college seemed fine, but this bullshit...fuck. I just noticed the U San Fran watermark on the bottom of the applet...

@Gaurav Uh, I wouldn't think so

vzn
@0celo7 (oh right TN remember now. sorry so many on here are outside US & foreign hard to keep track)

@vzn I grew up in Germany. I live in NOVA, we don't give two shits about PC here.

6:18 PM
It would really be a measure of how addicted one is

vzn
@0celo7 right seem to recall you or others mentioning german bkg

My econ teacher said "slaves were great, they built the nation".

@KyleKanos What I mean is that the issue is more about how much per day is healthy than being addicted per say

vzn
lol yes your dialog is decidedly/ distinctly non PC on here sometimes! leads to colorful chats/ transcripts at least!

Wow I wrote 2 as to

vzn
6:20 PM
@0celo7 what is NOVA?

@Gaurav What issue are you now talking about? I'm a little confused here

NOrthern VirginiA

NOVA = Northern Virginia?

vzn
@0celo7 ok, you may find college culture a bit different wrt eg these issues

@Gaurav No amount of smoking is healthy.
FFS you're inhaling burning plants...

6:22 PM

vzn
@0celo7 surprisingly explicit-yet-realistic example/ language/ scenario! so what are the best positions anyway? lol

That's not fit for this chat.
Otherwise we will fulfill the Sophia prophecy and become a porn site.

Were you even around here for her?

vzn
@0celo7 ah, sofia broke my heart, snif :( caliente seniorita

@KyleKanos Yes
For the latter part.

6:25 PM
Okay
I forget when things happened (who was here, who left, etc)

vzn
quite memorable as one of the rare females around here, & ofc you guys had to drive her off with your harsh/ uncaring ways :P
(speaking of PC!)

Well, it was more that some people felt her argument against FTL communication via entanglement was weak & she thought that it meant that people believed it was possible

vzn
@KyleKanos ah geez yeah go ahead focus on the negatives/ technicalities lol

cries I could be playing Oblivion right now
lol, her idea of PC was complete abstinence

vzn
@0celo7 how do the points work? this is reqd to enter the school? what is it? does it have a title/ what is it called?

6:29 PM
@vzn it's required to pay tuition
I'll give you the details when I finish this
should be almost over

vzn
← coincidentally just did ~90m of (online) corp training a few moments before. different stuff! far less exciting! except maybe ... the "anti money laundering"... o_O

I need to know what it is...i.gyazo.com/b6b60151e60f534c5b7fe8d2f373b94c.png (in the second box)

And what happened to Dr. Sabre tooth? Did he finally find the right place to vent out his anger against his state of life ?

They made us grad students do some "training" like this last year. Even the ones who had been there for a few years

vzn
@0celo7 are you having trouble with these exercises/ questions but are nearly literally a rocket scientist yourself? seriously? :P

6:32 PM
I got to make a comment in the session that elicited a few looks from the girls in the class

@vzn No
I got the badge for getting everything right in that section
Some things I've gotten wrong: heroin is not more addictive than nicotine
pot use is not increasing among teens

vzn
@0celo7 those tests with more than one answer are hard :( ... just had to do that too... is it more than 1 here? ... nothing says "it" though?

e-cigs are more popular than traditional

The leader asked what stressors grad students faced, I (being a guy) said Pregnancy. Like 4 girls sitting towards the front just snapped their heads at me. I then said that my wife went through 3 pregnancies to that point

@vzn only one
how do you get to be a "gender expert" i.gyazo.com/1e9dce9184db8ef3a74551710a49be77.png

vzn
6:35 PM
@KyleKanos ooh it seems to be a big no-no sometimes to talk about other's stress even though obviously pregnancy is highly stressful for both sexes... its not a criticism but some take it as something like that...

@0celo7 Spend 10,000 hours as a male and another 10,000 hours as a female

vzn
@KyleKanos caitlyn? lol
@KyleKanos was he asking about academic stressors or possible stressors or "other/ all of the above"? maybe that was the misunderstanding... you have 3 kids?

@vzn I was sorta aiming to cause a stir (it's a bad habit of mine). It was a dumb class that we were forced to do
@vzn It was generic stress that exist in life
I have 4 kids

vzn
@KyleKanos what kind of class? yes sometimes play "loose cannon/ devils advocate" in classes myself... :) its been a long time now though

It was a training class for grad students. I don't even remember what it was really about outside of causing that stir--so you can tell how much of an effect it had on me ;)

vzn
6:39 PM
@KyleKanos sounds kind of unusual anyway. have not heard of such a thing.

It was something new they were trying. The girl running it was actually getting a PhD in on of the social sciences with studies of grad student stress

vzn
@KyleKanos file in category "dumb stuff required/ mandatory"... now that is everywhere...! actually had to take a few psych tests as undergrad in psych class.

@vzn Yes, that's basically the gist of it.

@KyleKanos Were you the only guy in the class?

@Gaurav No, there were others

vzn
6:47 PM
K hows the job hunt going? dream job still not yet materialized?

A few phone interviews followed by a We're going with a different candidate... email

D:

@KyleKanos Don't know about American girls, but here girls voluntarily put their studies on hold at the advent of pregnancy due to stress and other factors (my cousin as example). That's why I thought it's strange the girls you mention reacted with surprise.

vzn
@KyleKanos basically a career change. not easy/ no fun sometimes.

I'm currently crafting an email to a cousin who works in a BI company w/ hopes that he'll be able to direct some work towards me for more experience (probably the biggest thing that's holding me back)
@vzn Agreed

vzn
6:53 PM
@Gaurav they might have interpreted the comment as sexist, when presumably there was no intent.

Decisions are reached:

using the "preponderance of evidence" standard, which means it is more likely than not the respondent is or is not responsible

vzn
@KyleKanos didnt you previously work in academia? looking to get out of it?

Wait

@Gaurav I think that depends on the girl, but these girls, I think, were surprised that a guy was saying pregnancy caused stress

College in-house courts don't have to abide by "beyond all reasonable doubt"?

6:54 PM
@vzn I just finished the PhD & wanted to get out of academia for the last year or so

vzn
@KyleKanos its kind of an assumption that women get pregnant during grad school or whenever...

@0celo7 Yes, see UC Santa Barbara for an example of the idiocy that follows

@KyleKanos possible

@KyleKanos Follows what? Beyond all reasonable doubt or preponderance of evidence?
Link?

vzn
@KyleKanos so whats not great about academia? long hours? low pay? no promotion? etc? "looking for a change"?

6:57 PM
@0celo7 The idiocy that follows from not abiding by "reasonable doubt": latimes.com/local/lanow/…
@vzn Mostly interest isn't there

vzn
want to "do science" but also "make money" & alas the two dont seem to mix that great

Interest for teaching, I mean

you could teach people how to read horoscopes :P
I'll read that article later
almost done with this crap...

vzn
@KyleKanos ah yeah teaching can be a real drag sometimes, forget who-it-is on here that talks about his students without the most reverence...

Writing love letters to a professor is not harassment?
wat
why does my male crush make me feel uncomfortable? why am I a woman? what the hell?
what kind of question is this?

user54412
7:32 PM
@Danu Interesting. Did you read his followup post and the Physics.SE question he linked?

user54412
I actually found that question to be very interesting, but I recall being unsatisfied with the first answer he posted. I hadn't noticed the second one til today.

user54412
BTW one of the areas of tension in galaxy astrophysics now is trying to explain growth of supermassive black holes -- they were produced very quickly in the early universe, and we certainly don't need mechanisms around that break them apart during collisions.

@ChrisWhite Why does everyone resort to entropy and thermodynamics when talking about black hole splitting. What is wrong with the non-bifurcation theorem?

user54412
One hopes that BH thermo captures all the relevant physics, in which case it should yield the same results but more intuitively.

I see.

user54412
7:42 PM
@0celo7 My undergrad left all internal justice to a board of undergrads. "Trials" were held in secret, sometimes without the defendant present, always without the defendant able to bring witnesses or cross-examine. This group had complete power up to and including expulsion.

user54412
Yeah, pretty scary stuff.

:(

user54412
They actually had two groups, one for academic infractions and another for everything else. I forget which was which, but they were the "Conduct Review Committee" and the "Board of Control." It's like a cross between the French Revolution and some near-future dystopia.

"Board of Control"

8:05 PM
@0celo7 what kind of a course was that?

@gonenc A bullshit one.
Taught me how not to be a fuck I guess.

@0celo7 I really wanna take that now to see what it is

You don't.

@0celo7 I don't what?

Exactly.

8:08 PM
@0celo7 really was that about some sexual education?

@gonenc In part.
I got my ODE book!

@0celo7 a new one?

@gonenc My college one.

@0celo7 first year boring stuff then

Second year.

8:11 PM
@0celo7 right people gotta learn calculus first
I have a feeling that a lot of stuff will be pretty boring in lecture halls

I doubt that you could answer all of the problems in this -- I know I can't.

@0celo7 not all of course but mostly it'd be boring

Go read Carroll.

I mean I don't want to listen a lecture on how to solve $\ddot x + \beta x = 0$

I can't solve that.

8:15 PM
@0celo7 I'm utterly busy now can't do that
@0celo7 I doubt that

@gonenc Then you're here because...?
@gonenc $\beta^x$ or something like that?

@0celo7 I meant in general. I'm here because it is 23:15 here and it is too late to learn new stuff

At 800+ pages, this book is a monster.
I could kill a rat with it.

@0celo7 who is the author?

user54412
8:18 PM
Do you do ODEs before complex analysis?

vzn
8:31 PM
@0celo7 the earrings seem to have something to do with it :|
@0celo7 boxing gloves! nice touch! how symbolic! and notice (ofc) its the woman who feels uncomfortable! sexist! :P

@ChrisWhite Yes, I'll do complex my junior year.

vzn
Feb 25 at 21:00, by Stan Shunpike
@Danu this sounds like it belongs on Chemistry SE lol

8:47 PM
@0celo7 Except for the "triggered" stuff, you've been awfully good at not complaining about your college curriculum...

@NeuroFuzzy Why would I complain?

@0celo7 ~shrug~ because (from my experience) the classes go slowly and what doesn't go slowly is too basic.
but maybe I'm just a pessimist!

@NeuroFuzzy Maybe. I have no concept of how fast or slow things will actually be.

YESSSS GOT A NEW GRAPHICS CARD and pc fan which should make my computer waaaay quieter

I can't begin to hear anything external with these puppies on.

8:56 PM
Ahh, that's an approach to it too.
I spent the $300 on a non-stock fan (mine is old/crummy), a new graphics card, and a solid state drive.

vzn
hi/ so NF whats your fave class right now?

NF should be on break

Correct!

vzn
oh right. ok. so then, last fave class?

My favorite class WAS group theoretical methods of physics, but I had to drop that b/c I wasn't keeping up with my lab classes.

vzn
8:59 PM
ah! a theoretician weighed down by application(s) so to speak.

The rest (electrodynamics, qm, circuitry lab, aaand... computational physics) were mostly meh!

vzn
yeah... writing any new code/ simulations these days?

circuitry lab?
hell I don't even have to take that crap

Electrodynamics used hand-wavey arguments to derive energy conservation/flux so it mostly turned into looking in the back of the book for PDEs/boundary conditions, QM "covered" things like fermi energy and ladder operators but not in a satisfactory way...
@0celo7 oh the circuitry lab was actually very cool/practical. It covered op amps, FETs, timers, lots of cool stuff at a cursory glance.
@vzn Oh yeah! I just got some trivial multithreading on my gravity-for-fun simulation. So the computation runs on eight threads (resulting in an 8x speedup because it was easy to parallelize) AND the interaction runs on a separate thread, so you can scroll/pan around in real-time while 25,000 particles interact mutually also in real-time :D

vzn
@NeuroFuzzy nice! is that python or...?

9:04 PM
@vzn oh C++

Real programmers use COBOL

vzn
@KyleKanos ugh, had 1 semester of that in highschool, not fond memories... IMPLEMENTATION SECTION... got B prob because instructor lost assignment...!

(had to throw in a wrench since I normally advocate Fortran 90+)
@vzn I saw a job posting where they requested someone with knowledge of COBOL

vzn
@KyleKanos COBOL will never die! once saw estimate that something like ~40% of all code in world was COBOL. yrs ago. some staggering number. it kept a lot of Y2K devs busy.

@KyleKanos How do I join the thieve's guild?
How do I join the legion?

9:08 PM
@0celo7 Look for a Wanted poster for Gray Fox and ask around about him in Waterfront District
The posters should be in the Imperial City

looking...

vzn
> There are over 220 billion lines of COBOL in existence, a figure which equates to around 80% of the world's actively used code.[1]

found one!
@KyleKanos what about the legion?

@0celo7 Okay..then go start asking beggars in the Waterfront about Gray Fox & they'll eventually let you know about secret meeting
Legion as in Imperial legion?

si

9:14 PM
@NeuroFuzzy Have you optimized your code for SIMD? Or tried CUDA/OpenCL now that you apparently have a new GPU?

@KyleKanos was there anything wrong with killing those pirates?

@0celo7 IDK about pirates. But you can't join the Imperial Legion

shame

9:35 PM
@KyleKanos Can't find beggars...

9:51 PM
@KyleKanos found one!
got the quest

10:05 PM
@alarge Oh nope, but that's definitely next on my list.

@NeuroFuzzy Which one?

10:34 PM
@KyleKanos I do stand by my right to use the word "fuck" :)
@dmckee Ohh, you're into whisky too? :D
@ACuriousMind It annoys me... More than it should
@0celo7 Really? Not in some places I've been :P
@ChrisWhite Yeah, pretty cool stuff!
@ChrisWhite This sounds interesting too

@Danu That was one I got wrong, so I can't personally vouch for it.

@ChrisWhite This seems pretty standard to me

@Danu I found that question to be curious as well.

user54412
10:55 PM
@Danu @0celo7 My curriculum had a single course that went complex analysis -> ODE -> PDE over the course of the year

user54412
The beautiful thing about it was how first you learned how to solve integrals by differentiating (Cauchy Residues and all that), then you learned how to solve ODEs by integrating, then you learned how to solve PDEs by turning them into ODEs.

user54412
(Also, this course was taken by ~70-80% of the student body)

Heh, okay
In Amsterdam it went ODE -> PDE -> complex analysis
Complex was only in the 3rd year.
It made sense because you kind of need differential equations during the first semester of the second year already.

Mine is ODE -> Analysis -> Complex Analysis -> PDE

(calculus and linear algebra came before this chain for me, and I never had proper analysis courses lol)

10:58 PM
@Danu I'm taking linear algebra this semester.

user54412
this was applied math

user54412
there was also a real analysis -> complex analysis chain in pure math

@ChrisWhite Ah

user54412
they couldn't be bothered with differential equations though

@ChrisWhite I'm doing that for my third year.
Second year is "advanced calculus", whatever the hell that means. Course description makes it sound like an intro to proof writing.
