@JackJohansson I don't believe @ handles exceptions, you can always avoid the need for @ with basic checks, e.g. checking if a file is writable/exists before opening it
keep in mind though that it's a silencer, not a suppressor, the error still happens with @ and isn't handled

So I have this simple honeypot spam protection idea. What if you replace the input tag username and replace it with something else. But you keep the username one there, hidden, so that when bots autofill that field, it will create a shadow account.
Generally, honeypot scripts tend to add a new field, like "URL" and when that gets filled, it flags it as spam. This is why I am thinking of going the username route, as only a human would type into the "new" field and leave the hidden field alone.
Some Friday food for thought for you all. lol

coding horror kept spam at bay for a long time with a captcha that was just the word orange in gothic text

Similar to my custom spam protection. It's simply the exact same word they need to type. Not even a rotation. Blended with the Google Captcha.
We still get like 10 manual spam users signing up on a daily basis.

yeah most anti-spam is anti-machine, it's crazy that people are being paid pennies to do this manually

By all means, join in and add some patches to remove some of these suppressors. Some of em ain't easy

some of them are backwards compat issues where there was no way to handle errors without @ in an older version of PHP, I remember gzip being an example that got fixed with exceptions in newer PHP

Q: Is it allowed to post a link when the solution provided works?

Nora McDougall-CollinsI asked a question that received an answer that worked. Am I allowed to post a link to the page where the answer worked in a comment to help others who may be looking for an example? I used the search function to find an answer to this question, but came up empty.

A lot of major platforms remove certain backward compatibilities at some point. I get that it would break sites, make people unhappy, but you know, stop caring about a server than has php 1.

Another anti-bot idea. Replace the name attribute of email input to url, but keep it visually stating it is email. lol

Someone wanna try to answer this question? I don't think it's solvable and OP is not able to provide whatever customizations they have in place. wordpress.stackexchange.com/q/377360/7355

@Howdy_McGee probably canonical URL redirect filter

Could be. The way it keeps getting described sounds like a custom endpoint. It sounds like they're trying to process a given ID in the URL to output some kind of data. I can't tell if they're looking to build it or debug it but if it is a custom endpoint they ain't giving us the code :/

WordPress 5.5.3 is now available.  This maintenance release fixes an issue introduced in WordPress 5.5.2 which makes it impossible to install WordPress on a brand new website that does not have a database connection configured. This release does not affect sites where a database connection is already configured, for example, via one-click installers or an […]
