@JackJohansson I don't believe @ handles exceptions, you can always avoid the need for @ with basic checks, e.g. checking if a file is writable/exists before opening it
keep in mind though that it's a silencer, not a suppressor, the error still happens with @ and isn't handled
So I have this simple honeypot spam protection idea. What if you replace the input tag username and replace it with something else. But you keep the username one there, hidden, so that when bots autofill that field, it will create a shadow account.
Generally, honeypot scripts tend to add a new field, like "URL" and when that gets filled, it flags it as spam. This is why I am thinking of going the username route, as only a human would type into the "new" field and leave the hidden field alone.
some of them are backwards compat issues where there was no way to handle errors without @ in an older version of PHP, I remember gzip being an example that got fixed with exceptions in newer PHP

A lot of major platforms remove certain backward compatibilities at some point. I get that it would break sites, make people unhappy, but you know, stop caring about a server than has php 1.

Could be. The way it keeps getting described sounds like a custom endpoint. It sounds like they're trying to process a given ID in the URL to output some kind of data. I can't tell if they're looking to build it or debug it but if it is a custom endpoint they ain't giving us the code :/
