quiet in here today

11:14 AM
morning

@toscho afternoon

@Brady I just woke up. So it must be morning.

@toscho nope you overslept ;)

11:33 AM
GitHub: Instantly Beautiful Project Pages – oh, nice. Some are quite beautiful.

11:51 AM
hi everyone

1 hour later…
1:03 PM
@SolomonHenry hi

1 hour later…
2:12 PM
@Brady You should really set WordPress Stack Exchange as your parent site in your chat profile. You miss the mod messages right now.

"Good documentation is a waste of time and energy." ...this explains Codex I guess.

2:44 PM
thinking about doing WP doc site... but existing ones mostly suck miserably (xrefs and such) so I am not sure it's worth a try

2:57 PM
@Rarst Something like the PHP manual would be cool.

I am thinking taking PHPDoc as foundation (it's already written and there is plenty of it), build pages for functions (like Codex pages for individual functions) and then add a layer of organizations - build calling hierarchies of functions, families of functions related to specific functionality... this is something Codex could have but won't because it's work and owners don't give a damn to have this :)
after automated stuff is done can think about taking user-submitted content, like PHP takes highly curated comments

3:12 PM
+1

1 hour later…
4:32 PM
Is to disable registration through wordpress but still allow people to sign in through twitter and facebook?

2 hours later…
6:43 PM
@Rarst Surely since the existing ones suck, that's even more reason to make your own :D

@StephenHarris yeah, but it's also a sign that no one cares enough to try and make one that doesn't suck

7:00 PM
@Rarst Do you know if I can use conditional tags safely inside parse_request?

@kaiser seems to early to me
actually since it's end of parse_request it might work already... never tried
template_redirect is right after and is definitely safe for conditionals

@Rarst I'm using the filter.

parse_request is not a filter

0
A: Different number of posts in each category

kaiserNot shure if this will work - it may be that the conditionals are not working at this point... // inside functions.php function wpse47861_intercept_main_query( $wp ) { // default $nr_posts = 10; if ( is_category( 'CAT NAME' ) ) $nr_posts = 4; if ( is_category( array( 9...

@Rarst yea, sry. action

7:29 PM
@kaiser Why not use pre_get_posts ?

8:15 PM
@StephenHarris right pre_get_posts would be better and conditionals work too.

8:40 PM
@StephenHarris Want to try that over there?

2 hours later…
10:23 PM
@kaiser done :)

@StephenHarris No! Just answered the same! :D
Even linked to you in chat here! :)

@kaiser sorry! :S

@StephenHarris Burn in hell! :)
The comment I added on my A
> Don't mark this one as solution. @StephenHarris and me just posted at the same sec. Go down to his one and mark this one. Thanks

would have answered sooner but I was away from the computer...
... that or I was waiting for you to start answering to jump in a second before hand :)

;)
@StephenHarris I wanted to work on my blog theme a little bit today, but found myself lost in continuous improvements. Therefore I thought "let's search for a free theme - again". Now I found some, which are not too crappy, but still have some solid drawbacks. Therefore I wanted to write a Q about "Where to look at a theme when I want to use it for my site". Point is that I think this will get some attention and I need a well spelled english title for that. Could you lend a helping hand?

10:34 PM
@kaiser sure... So the question is about where you can find (preview-able) free themes?

@StephenHarris No, it's more like "How to judge a theme" or "At what files in a theme shall I look first" or "What is a no-go for a theme that I want to use". Something in the line of that.

@kaiser That's a difficult Q to answer - it could depend on what you wanted the theme for. Maybe, 'Best Practices for Theme Development'... might be a bit too wide.

@StephenHarris For me it was more about code. So "open file" > "search for mistakes"

The more I work on themes the more I think a theme should do as little as possible.

@toscho Agree. Most of my "theme code" has become a mu-plugin in the last half year or so.
@toscho Any idea for a title?

10:45 PM
@kaiser Title of what?

@toscho For the question regarding theme code. The question I asked S.H. before

Hm … How to judge a good theme?
But open questions aren’t so welcome here.

@toscho Not that bad, but I wanted it the other way round: "What's the most no-go for a theme?"

@kaiser Easy: Build-in custom post types.

»What is a complete blocker for a theme?«

10:48 PM
@toscho yup, anything where the theme interferes with producing content rather than displaying it.

@toscho Unregistered styles, custom seo functionality. The list is long. But I need a Question title before the answer :)

Still … there is no objective best answer.

@StephenHarris And anything that the theme adds that is non-overrideable.

@kaiser Providing shortcodes - particularly when they are simply there as html place holders

10:50 PM
@toscho That's what wikis are therefore

@kaiser No, wikis are not trash cans for bad questions.

Not seen this, but I know CB was thinking about doing a series on his blog about theme development:

@toscho »Objective best practice for furchtbar bla« < Wiki :)
@StephenHarris Slidedeck slides slideshare.net/chipbennett/…
@toscho So: Mod says no?

@kaiser Narrow down the question. Otherwise we just get a flame war.

@toscho Thought about sneaking Q in - beyond mod-radar to actually start a flame war against all those »premium« and »freemium« crap :)

10:55 PM
@kaiser I know.

@toscho Ok, to stay serious. Any suggestion on how-to narrow it down?
@StephenHarris Adding 4 additional image sizes and not using the built in ones.

@kaiser How do I make my theme developer friendly?
Probably still too open.

@toscho 'Objective Best Practise....' - worked for plug-in development...

IMHO there is billion ways theme can suck, so there is no way to enumerate them in one answer

@Rarst Exactly, that’s why I don’t think it would be a good question.

10:59 PM
@toscho It shall not be a good Q. It shall be a good Q about bad habbits.

@kaiser Asking bad questions is a bad habit.

@toscho then just give me a good title :P

@kaiser This is not about the title. It is about the possible answers.

@toscho It is a little bit about the title, because it implies the possible answers. But, ok. I give up. Just wanted a counter part to all this "this is great" answers, that people love so much.

@kaiser You’ve got already more flagged posts than SANS780730. restrict yourself. :P
