Q: Help tracking down birth of James Spencer Ward circa 1830s in Wrenbury

CharlieI am trying to find a birth for a James Spencer Ward in Wrenbury, Cheshire, sometime in the 1830s. I know that James Spencer Ward lived in Chester as of the 1901, 1891, 1881 and 1871 censuses. His wife was Mary A, which I believe to be Mary Ann Davies (who married a James Ward in Chester in 1864...

This may be him on the 1861 census.

@sempaiscuba yes I think it might be; I've seen that record but it unfortunately lends no more clues. It strengthens the 1837 figure I suppose

Does the 1861 address match the 1864 marriage?

@sempaiscuba I don't have the certificate yet, so can't check. If that's the best avenue I can order it but I'd rather not as the expenses all add up.

Looking at the Bishop's transcript it seems the addresses don't match. Ah, well ...

@semapiscuba they're both in Chester, just a different part of town. He may have moved

That was my thinking too. That's often the way when you're following a paper trail through the records.

@sempaiscuba there are a few James Wards living in Cheshire in the 1851 census, but none born on Wrenbury from what I can find.

@Charlie I did wonder about this one from Offerton in Cheshire. Probably worth checking the original image,

@sempaiscuba yes I saw that one. Problem is the image is so unclear on Findmypast that I can't see what it says. A second opinion would be welcome

@Charlie I don't have a subscription at home atm. Can you post an image?

@sempaiscuba I don't have one either. I can send one tomorrow when I go up to the library

@Charlie OK. :)
Probably also worth checking the possibility from the 1841 census

Here's the 1851 census we were talking about, bottom one is the right one ignore the top one

Ancestry's copy is a bit clearer

@AndyW much appreciated. I think it says Stockport
My bad, that's James Barlow. I don't know what it says for James Ward

@Charlie: Ancestry's transcription is "Rovie", but that's not a real place. It does appear to begin with R though, or possibly P.
Peover, perhaps? Probably quite a few possibilities though.

@AndyW I'm trying to find a link here en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_places_in_Cheshire
Either way, not Wrenbury unfortunately, which is what I'm looking for

People weren't always consistent with census birthplaces. They sometimes said the next town over or the nearest large town or city. Might be worth zooming out around Wrenbury to look for some possible places.

The difficult thing also is James Spencer Ward's YOB is not consistent either on census records which makes things difficult
