@Alenanno Will you make a rap song for us next time?

Some of these 'resource-type' questions. Like "Where can I watch anime? (restricted to legal sites)", and "Where can I find a list of current anime series/past seasons?" are probably best served with a single, massive FAQ entry. A bit like what we did over on JLU for learning resources.
21
Q: Resources for learning Japanese

ジョンHere at JLU, we have been seeing a constant stream of "Do you know any books/programs/websites that would help me learn XYZ in Japanese?", even though we (and the stack exchange network in general), are specifically not setup to handle those questions well. Inspired by Chinese Language and Usage'...

@jkerian Should we start compiling resources for this SE?

Note that we didn't do that until we had argued about it for ~6 months, so we had a very clear idea of what kind of question we were trying to answer

@jkerian damn... that's a lot...

@Mysticial There's a tremendously wide variety of learning resources out there

8:10 PM
@jkerian Normally, I wouldn't care how many drives my collection was distributed on, but I travel too much. I kinda want to consolidate as much as possible.

Xeo
@jkerian You might have misunderstood to which message he replied.

@Xeo I did indeed
haha
@Mysticial Rather oddly, I stopped watching much, around the time the collection went beyond 10TB
I'm honestly more into jdramas at this point... much better to be able to watch the body language at the same time (for language practice)

But yeah, 3TB internals are still a mess to deal with... Don't touch them for probably another 5 years.
I dunno what the manufacturers have been doing. 3TB has been out for a long time now and still support is still complete shit.

@Mysticial It's not the manufacturers
The problem is usually the partition system... either your OS or your BIOS are causing you trouble

I mean, understand the hardware limitation in it. But the fact that the it's been more than 3 years now, and the enclosures still have trouble taking them.

8:16 PM
Yeah, that's just crappy firmware on the enclosures
(btw... I'm a firmware programmer for HDs)

reiterating my question from earlier: can I rename tags (or at least submit a rename for review) or do I need to go through someone with more power?

@jkerian ah... that's good to know. :) I shall listen then.

I do work pretty far away from that stuff though... closer to the hardware controllers than the SATA/SAS interface

The scary part is the silent data corruption you'd get for moving the 3TB drives around if one of the ports happens to not support > 2TB.
And the enclosures that have USB3 + esata.
esata uses the motherboard's controller.
USB3 uses the on-board controller in the case.
So if the motherboard supports > 3TB. And you setup your drives like that.
using esata.
Then you switch to USB, and the enclosure doesn't support >2TB... BAM
data corruption.
address wrap around of the >2TiB portion down to the bottom.
Silent wrap around too.
I only discovered that when I was playing around with a spare internal 3TB that I had.

@atlantiza which tags are you referring to?

8:20 PM
@grasshopper anime.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/kingdomhearts should be kingdom-hearts right?

yes

so I'm trying to figure out how to rename it but... I can't seem to find it which leads me to believe that maybe I need to ask someone with more power?

maybe a tag synonym, followed by a merge?

@atlantiza Only mods can rename. But if there are few enough questions, just retag them.

8:23 PM
@jkerian that seems kind of roundabout... same to @Mysticial too

also can mods delete obselete tags?

@grasshopper Tags automatically die when they are orphaned for a week.

@Krazer Why? :P

ok good, because the tags that where out phased in beta shouldnt be used by new users

@Alenanno For fame~

8:25 PM
well here's a dumb question: do we have any mods since we just opened yesterday?

@Krazer If I have something to say, I'll do it. :P

not yet, only the community mods

I haven't been on a private beta SE before

@atlantiza Nope. :)

for example and can easily be replaced with

8:26 PM
what's the difference between community mod and normal mod?

community mods are 'global' to the whole network
(somewhat confusingly)

@atlantiza There is the Team, which Jkerian is referring to, and then you have the diamond moderators.

ah, yes it is a bit confusing

@Alenanno Which ones are cooler?

so since we don't have any anime-specific mods, should I just go through a roundabout method to fix this tag? or should I go through a community mod?

8:27 PM
@Krazer The ones living farthest from the Equator, I guess. :P

@Alenanno depends on the season xD

@Krazer Ahahah

@atlantiza I think the anime mods will do a tag sweep once they've been elected

@grasshopper so I shouldn't do anything?

@atlantiza To do what?

8:29 PM
I'd retag it to the new, correct tag if you're feeling helpful :)

@atlantiza nah, the question is still searchable and I think it will get standard tags later on

@Alenanno I'm talking about fixing a tag (kingdomhearts to kingdom-hearts)
@jkerian yeah that's what I was thinking of since it's not that hard
oh well, I'll just retag it

@jkerian its minor but having standard tags when the site expands will benefit the site, as I dont really want synonyms when all it takes is removing a dash

"You are attempting to create the tag kingdom-hearts ; however the tag kingdomhearts already exists!"

@atlantiza already tried

8:33 PM
so there's not really a way to fix it for now without mod intervention?

yup

@Shog9: re the above tagging issues, any advice?

I think code geass should be the standard tag, agree?

@jkerian yeah, fixed. Next time just post on meta asking for it to be renamed.

instead of code geass r2

8:35 PM
@grasshopper agreed

Ah that reminds me. How should we deal with titles with really long names... like "Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai" (My Little Sister Can't be this Cute) or "Oniichan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne" (I Don't Like You at All, Big Brother!)

@Shog9 so we should make a meta topic for every rename to fix formatting...? or should we make a meta topic to post all such requests

By the way, if you are not sure about what you can do, you can check your Privileges. 100% means you have the privilege.

@Alenanno I already checked my privileges (lol) but didn't see anything about renaming tags - just creating tag synonyms

@Krazer is there a limit on tag lengths?

8:36 PM
I think in general, you probably only want a tag for the "overarching" storyline... which, of course, gets complicated by series like Gundam (where 0080 and Seed have basically nothing in common)

@atlantiza Yeah. But it should be included in one of those, I guess.

@jkerian I could understand 0080 and Seed having different tags, but I don't think we should have a tag for gundam-00 and gundam-00-s2

@grasshopper yeah 25 characters.

@Krazer mmm.... thats troublesome... many animes have looooonng titles

@Krazer if it's too long then I guess go with a popular shortening (oreimo) and include the full title in the tag wiki?

Xeo
8:38 PM
@grasshopper OreImo? :D

Yes, that's the best way.

@atlantiza but if we do with the english tags, how to we shorten them?

@Krazer I'm not 100% sure of what you're asking... like if we decide to use english titles for tags?

8:39 PM
@atlantiza aye

@Krazer even the official dub calls it Oreimo animanganation.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/…

@Alenanno concerning the animes with different adaptations, I think core tags should be used, because many animes have 5 or more different variations, then the OP can specify which one they are referring to, thoughts?

correction: there is no english dub but just an english release with subs

@Xeo You'll want to use the -'s... just for SEO.

8:42 PM
@grasshopper If the adaptation can be considered an entirely different version (major plot difference, etc), it should have its own tag
If not, it should not.

@grasshopper Can you name some examples?

Xeo
@MadaraUchiha Can you stop with the PHP-specific "tags" to communicate intent, please?

For instance, there shouldn't be , but there should be

(or just 俺の妹) :P

code geass, FMA, naruto, gintama etc

8:43 PM
@Xeo Why? What's wrong with it?

Xeo
Not everyone understands it?

@MadaraUchiha I see the existence of that tag, though...

It's not communicating intent, it's requesting assitance in closing the question.
I'll make sure that they will though :D

"fullmetal-alchemist-2003-anime" is kinda wordy/clunky/not nice to look at...

@atlantiza That's might be fine but if we want to be consistant with this meta what should we do with my second example: "Oniichan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne" (I Don't Like You at All, Big Brother!)

8:44 PM
@atlantiza Agreed actually. :P

Xeo
sigh, can't you just say what you want instead of using cryptic methods? [tag:cv-pls] vs close votes

I guess I'd think "Full-Metal-Alchemist" (or is that "Fullmetal-Alchemist"), and "FMA" should be tag synonyms... "FMA" is pretty well-established

@atlantiza But since it's almost entirely different from the manga/brotherhood, it should be tagged as such

anyway I mentioned it here meta.anime.stackexchange.com/questions/84/… not sure if we should treat it case by case or have a general rule about it

Xeo
@jkerian Fullmetal Alchemist is the right name.

8:45 PM
@Krazer I just see people go by

@MadaraUchiha I would say assume 2003 anime unless specifically noted that they are talking about brotherhood

@Xeo It's horrible though. :P

Xeo
What?

@atlantiza And I would assume differently, because Brotherhood is the one which conforms to the manga.
Brotherhood is what you call "canon", while the 2003 anime is what you call "filler"

@Xeo I mean the name written like that. Not the Anime which is fabulous.

Xeo
8:46 PM
@MadaraUchiha Atleast Brotherhood has a different name in its... name, already.
@MadaraUchiha Eh, more like "alternative story"

@MadaraUchiha I would be fine with separate tags really but I think the one you suggested could use some improving

@atlantiza Sure

@atlantiza Preferable to just get the tag names right the first time ;-)
But yeah, make a post for each such request

@Shog9 I'm not the one making them :P (the poor tags, not the requests)

8:47 PM
Is there a serious need to separate the two FMAs by tag?

I don't think there is honestly
but I could see points supporting it

@jkerian I'd argue that yes, there is.

Xeo
@jkerian Sure is. Different plots require different answers.

ok so for FMA it should be and , and the other series?

They're two entirely different stories.

8:48 PM
@Krazer Agreed with that.

Same characters, but an entirely different plot.
@Krazer If any, fullmetal-alchemist-brotherhood
with fma-brotherhood synonymous.

Xeo
Synonymize ALL the tags!

But @MadaraUchiha insists that the first FMA anime have a tag other than "fullmetal-alchemist" or "fma" since it does not follow the manga nearly as much as brotherhood, correct?

hahaha

@Xeo is ... of course!

8:50 PM
@atlantiza I'm just saying, it'd be rather confusing for 2003 to be the default
We'll live though.

@MadaraUchiha I think that confusion only exists for people who have seen both series (and the manga)
but that's more a thematic criticism, not any real confusion

Well, Brotherhood will inevitably have "brotherhood" in the tag name so I think that'd be enough to distinguish them.

I do see it as the default if someone talks about FMA anime without specifically mentioning "brotherhood" or "second season"

@jkerian Which is probably more common than you might think

my worries is when do we only use core tags and when does a series continuation credit a new tag? does Code Geass or Gintama get core tags or new tags, guidelines will be helpful

8:51 PM
speak of which how do we reference the FMA manga?

@Krazer fullmetal-alchemist, manga

Xeo
@grasshopper Brotherhood is not really a continuation, so...

@atlantiza That

@grasshopper seems like a series 'reboot' like FMA had, probably justifies a new tag

Xeo
Alternative versions? New tag. Second season? Same tag.

8:53 PM
@Xeo continuation/adaptation/new series, just which deserves new tags and which dont...

@atlantiza the problem is that the story is more tied to brotherhood than to the original, so shouldn't it be something like fma-brotherhood, manga?

@Krazer but the manga isn't called that. brotherhood is used as a way to differentiate between the two anime series.

Xeo
@Krazer Eh, the manga is the original, so it for sure shouldn't get the brotherhood part.

@atlantiza But then you get a contradicting situation

I must admit that I'm not happy with the meta-tags 'manga' and 'anime'... I'd be much happier if, for example this question was badgered with "anime or manga?" in the comments until they changed the title

8:54 PM
Where without the tag, refers to the 2003 anime

Xeo
So? Let it be like that, it was called FMA

^ agree with @Xeo

But with the refers to the manga, which is an entirely different story

Xeo
Brotherhood is differentiated through its name already.

I'm sure it happens for some other series where the anime does not directly follow the manga but is still called the same thing

Xeo
8:56 PM
Majikoi, Novel vs Anime/Manga

@atlantiza say it ain't so! </sarcasm>

@jkerian it happens but rarely... e.g. Medabots, Legendz

one other strike against the manga tag is the whole SEO thing... the included tag depends on popularity (apparently). [manga] and [anime] are going to be far more popular than hikaru-no-go
But the anime title is the one you want to snag google hits with

@jkerian this is very true

yay the questions reached the 100 mark...

8:59 PM
@jkerian I'm not really following what using [manga] or [anime] has to do with getting google hits

Indeed
@atlantiza He's referring to the single tag that would appear in the title.

@atlantiza The page title is modified when indexed in google, the most popular tag is prepended to the title.

ahh ok

@atlantiza JLU sees a massive improvement in SEO hits when I go around killing the [grammar] tag

but wouldn't anime be in the title anyway since we are anime se?

9:02 PM
@atlantiza It's not a matter of getting 'anime' or 'manga' out of there... it's a matter of keeping the series name IN

@atlantiza That's the point. You'll lose "hikaruo-no-go" for instance, if [anime] is tagged
Well fellas, I'm off to bed
I've reached my cap today :)

cya Uchiha

@jkerian aren't most people including series name in the question anyway?

Just remember, Madara never really sleeps. I'll keep watch... from the shadows...
Night night :D

@atlantiza Not really... just looking at the front page

Xeo
9:04 PM
@atlantiza No, and we should discourage that.

@Xeo really? some of these questions would look weird without the title

It looks like the more obscure series are always including the name... but... browse this list: anime.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/naruto

"Cowboy Bebop: Connection between anime and movie" would look really vague without the title
imo at least

Xeo
@atlantiza That's what tags are for.
Same on SO: "How to reverse a list?" is also "obscure" without looking at the tags.

@Xeo I understand, but I still think it looks oddly vague
it keeps the series name in the page title as well

9:07 PM
@atlantiza I actually side with you on this one... the title should make sense... but it shouldn't be essential due to obscure SEO issues
having the anime/manga tags around actually MAKES it essential

and I think the anime/manga tags can play an important role even if they are, uh, drowning out the series tag
if the anime and manga are vastly different then I can't answer questions about the manga if I've only seen the anime

who cares? post the answer with your source
even in the FMA case, if the questioner doesn't specify, they SHOULD get the manga/anime answers

well I was talking about in a situation where the person is specifically looking for manga answers

If that's what they want, the question should be "In the manga..."

if they just want to know "in general" then yeah I agree they should get both

9:15 PM
consensus on rouge tags? tag cleanup? anime.stackexchange.com/questions/188/…

@grasshopper I saw that question earlier and wondered how often most of the tags would actually be used...

Xeo
@grasshopper *rogue, surely?

@atlantiza I think more than half the tags should go, most are too general and localized

lol, same here, pretty sure thats the only one that will use those here

I would say get rid of everything besides "anime-production" and MAYBE leave "culture" as well
we'll probably end up getting some culture questions spawned from anime (especially since Japanese culture SE is still in definition stage)

9:19 PM
maybe one all encompassing tag that can be used for the business side? but I'm sure it will rarely be used

@grasshopper I think the financials of making anime fall within anime-production

ok its still up for tag edits just need a good fit for the social impact questions

9:35 PM
Naruto is the most asked right now.

I think something needs to be done about the title of anime.stackexchange.com/questions/195/…
It's way too spoilery at the moment

and is it really appropriate to have both the japanese and romanized name in the title?

I'm inclined to say "sure"... on that

@Krazer It's taking a bit of unnecessary space...

I'd suggest the romanized name should be a requirement here... but don't see a reason to remove the kana version
long titles are betterer :P
has a reputation at work for having full-sentence length bug-report titles

9:42 PM
lol
:P

personally I think having both titles is redundant as well, but I think the spoiler is a bigger issue

So is naruto better in shoyu ramen or miso ramen?

@Krazer The ninja? Trololol :P

@Krazer shoyu

@Alenanno the roll xD

9:49 PM
@Krazer ahah I know, just joking lol
Don't you love it when Naruto goes like う・ず・ま・き・ナルト連弾!!!

@jkerian add some tonkotsu and I'm there~

I still need to taste Ramen. :(
Let's go to Ichiraku's!

@Alenanno don't you mean Ichiraku? xD

fixes it... That's what I wrote!

this guy know his (instant) ramen

9:57 PM
What's it made of?

I finally managed to log in to chat. Yay.
@atlantiza what do you think about "Can someone explain what happens at the end of Clannad After Story?"

@LoganMaingi Hello :)

@Alenanno Hello :)

@Alenanno words and pictures

@Krazer lol
So you put the ramen inside words and pictures and then in the microwave?

10:04 PM
@Alenanno no all you need to do is add hot water and wait ~3m. words and pictures come after. Shall I send you some?

@Krazer No, don't worry, but thanks! :D

@LoganMaingi thanks, that's good and definitely implies that there will be spoilers within :)

@Alenanno aw I've always wanted to seen an Italian in Italy eating ramen

@Krazer Why?

@Alenanno no reason it's like an eskimo eating fried dumpling, exotic

10:13 PM
@Krazer :P
I need to learn how to use chopsticks yet.

@Alenanno hold both sticks in one hand, jab into bowl, twist, twist some more, extract, eat.

@Krazer I read instructions and saw videos but the best is use them I guess XD

@Alenanno it's like eating with giant stick tweezers

LoL
XD

10:51 PM
I'm off, see you soon!

@Alenanno bai
