4:01 AM
bonus Mo-Chan and Fran

@Hakase yeh it sucks ass because of how vague the wording is

black flagged ships never stopped sailing

because while you'd think it would be just the super extreme stuff it can be used for just about anything

guess it's easier to ban than to regulate and tax

@Hakase not so much the ships but more the stores set up on clouds which force Australians to use shitter versions of the storefront
Steam banned Valkyrie Drive: Bhikkhuni for just Australians
Playstation Network has a separate store for Australia and UK, UK has Battle Princess of Arcadia and Black Rock Shooter, Australia doesn't
and given how consoles now need to be linked to an account, account swapping is more of a pain

4:41 AM
Is porn banned too?

@EddieKal porn sites, no

Hmm that's weird

after finding out that japanese studios get pennies on international sales and that the official versions sold are usually inferior to what you can find on black seas, I don't get why anyone would knowingly buy from localized stores

infact while SAO has been banned in Australia, you can still buy it digitally

if it's supposed to stimulate the economy, it's clearly not working
just support artists on patreon directly
and studios on kickstarter

4:44 AM
but as i said, the issue isn't so much if it's banned now or not, it's how vague it can be. J-List now wont ship +18 items to Australia because some kept being sent back but you can argue Shikkoku no Sharnoth ~What a Beautiful Tomorrow~ Fullvoice ReBORN isn't extreme in any sense but still +18

but do you have to disclose what sorts of books you're trying to ship in overseas?

so the issues the store fronts that export to Australia face end up being more than they are worth and easier to just ban it all which is a save from the government who would have to say that themselves
@Hakase when ordering, no. that is on the sender to declare which there are huge fines for incorrect declarations

of all the things to distinguish between - books
who cares what's in them
bad time to be a physical media collector I guess

so i can buy Sono Hanabira Games but it's the person who send it to be that has to declare they are Games. whether Customs opens up the package to see is random

what sucks is that customs has the right to even tamper with the packages

4:47 AM
like when i got my Madoka Kami statues, i had a note in there saying that Customs had opened the box to inspect. i never get that for my games
@Hakase well if they didn't you could sneak drugs in

yup, inside figurines, inside books

or things that could harm our environment like pests
@Hakase you'd be surprised

no, I know
but it's just dumb how they can't x-ray packages or something

one episode of Border Security had a VHS Cassette that was hiding small bags of cocaine
and there was another one where a package was importing pirated japanese urination porn. japanese and porn aside they said the urination was banned
(i assume it was pirated because they were just small plastic pockets)

@Hakase X-rays are not all-powerful, and are quite limited.

4:51 AM
^ and what they can see doesn't tell them too much
it generally comes down to hunches and logic with what was declared

@Memor-X The craziest one I saw was on "Nothing to Declare", can't remember which version, UK or Australia

ie. if you declare computer parts and there is organic matter showing up in the scan, there's already a warning sign
@EddieKal would be UK, never saw it called that in Australia

Customs opened a package of a couple of huge nuts (mechanical nuts). One of them is heavier than the rest by a few grams.

as per the wiki, we call it Border Security: Australia's Front Line or Border Security: International

They weigh like 500 grams each, one of them is like 505

4:54 AM
@EddieKal and that one had drugs right?

x-rays don't show much. So they opened the nut up
@Memor-X You guessed it

it would be easier if all the rest of them did

hollow inside

@Hakase no because the market packaging would have the weight

ah well it just soaked in some moisture in transit then

4:56 AM
i think the idea would be to use only a couple to get under the radar
anyway, while i don't think porn itself is banned, the wording could target any porn and stores like J-List take measures themselves already
infact i would not be surprised if what happened was that people just kept buying stuff they know is banned and was using the "privacy" packaging to try and sneak it in

3 hours later…
8:10 AM
@Hakase Because otherwise they couldn't get paranoid with a 400$ package labelled "traditional dolls"
because a doll can't cost that much, right?

@Derpy actually my Madoka Figures i mentioned before cost over $400
and i got about $700 worth of Pins coming in the mail now

8:26 AM
@Memor-X dolls, not figures

@Derpy in that case, high quality porcelain dolls
easily over $500 from overseas

@Memor-X exactly. T'was a present, and apparently they couldn't believe the cost. Desisted when they realized that "you break it, you pay it"

8:49 AM
Anyway.
@EddieKal just wondering, I assume you aren't familiar with Lum?

Q: Is fanservice good in anime?

TK-421I have watched the first episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion and at the end, after the credits, there was a short teaser of the next episode, ended with the sentence: Tune in next time for lots more fan service! I have watched much more American tv shows and movies than anime, so for me, the word "

10:27 AM
Mornin'

bit of a late mornin but sure :)
@Derpy I'm wondering when will be the point when someone invents physical goods cryptography so that you can order a mess of dust, dirt, oils, grease and smelly goo, and then decrypt it at home into the original object
of course even the slightest disturbance in the mass of random particles will result in an undescipherable mass of useless matter
so... quite useless for shipping

@Hakase don't give them ideas. We don't need "3d printed figures you have to print yourself"

I mean... isn't that basically what 3d printers are for?
you can extract models from games like Genshin Impact and with a few minor adjustments have them in physical form
and if you have artistic skill, create your own, better ones

@Hakase ... and then paint them since 3d printer == no coloring

does this meet your production requirements?

10:39 AM
A) price?
b) size?

the ideal 3d printer should be able to print me a Myth Cloth.

12 x 12 x 20 inch build volume
7.5k usd

as in... real size Myth Cloth.

alright that would be a custom-built arbitrary size printer then
as always, the best things are the ones you can't buy but have to make yourself

11:02 AM
@Hakase nonsense. The best things would be the ones you don't have to buy because you have an amazing cosplayer friends that will craft those for you.

5 hours later…
3:40 PM
@Derpy Lum Invader? Not really. Why?

4:07 PM
@EddieKal Based on the analysis you were doing for Toradora, I was wondering what you would think of "Lum The Forever"

@Derpy I will have to watch it first. :)
But I did find some interesting things when I put Urusei Yatsura in the Google Scholar search engine
Susan Napier is a very interesting and very prominent scholar knowledgeable about anime and Japanese fantasy
I believe she's written about Sailor Moon. Not sure about Urusei Yatsura.
Found it
@Derpy You might find these passages interesting. Sorry I know it's a lot of words. In case you are interested...

4:40 PM
Fun fact: Lum never was intended to have Blue/Green hairs in first place.
Despite popular belief her REAL hair color was an iridescent, changing color. The green color was actually a limit of the animation style in those years
This is also why the recent QPosket figures are available in two colors
The "anime" one and the "manga cover" one.
Would be cool to see some recent animation actually trying to give her the original planned hair color. Probably, she would look like MLP Celestia.

@Derpy I like the one on the right better

second point second page..... Lum tries to invite Ataru to bed only in the first issue of the comic, where she has a personality quite different from what she show in the rest of the serie.
Third, Ataru NEVER wanted to "get rid of her". He claims to, but even in the first example of her leaving he isn't really happy. After that single incident (again, first issue of the comic, probably even before Rumiko decided if Lum was the protagonist or the antagonist) he actually get quite mad every time she gets away.
As for the chaos, yep, that was what made Lum a great show. Ignore the ones who tell you it was a fanservice-only show. Lum is not an old version of Love Ru.
The name was there for some reason.
The may have tried to call her "Lum Invader" in the west, but the original title Urusei Yatsura.... was a double meaning pun
"the ones from the Uru star" but also "those noisy people"
@EddieKal Anyway more seriously, interesting reading, if not a tad cherry picked. The coffee-shop episode plays that way yes, but one should also mention the episode where she tries to apply dog-training to Ataru by going to the past and giving a five years old version of him a small doll that would electrocute him every time he just get close to a girl.
@EddieKal Anyway, to be fair, I wasn't looking for an analysis of Lum. I was hoping to find someone who actually saw that specific movie.
Without going in detail, that movie is quite peculiar, to the point it is often regarded as "a puzzle" without a clear meaning.

5:14 PM
@Derpy From what I read in Napier's writing, the series does sound very interesting. I will for sure watch it when I find the time. I am always open to discussing themes, tropes, social implications of anime.

@EddieKal to be fair, it is not directly a tropes nor social implications that some see in the movie. It is mostly an hidden message than some see and a second meaning for the story.

@Derpy Not sure I understand what you mean

@EddieKal the movie has a very odd plot, that doesn't really make much sense.
But if you look at how the movie is crafted, a sort of second meaning emerges
a reason for the movie to be played out in that odd way.
It is not about the role of Lum as a female character or other similar considerations like the article you linked before.
In this case it is a sort of "message" to the one watching the movie
But it is quite cryptic, to the point that most fans won't probably even notice
There is a quite famous article that goes into analyzing the movie and this second meaning, but reading it without knowing the series would probably feel quite empty.
@EddieKal does this make more sense?

5:50 PM
anyway...
in Not a bar, but plays one on TV, Apr 1 '19 at 13:28, by Derpy
@BESW I will just keep pretending this year April Fool "toy" was the knitting game on the winter bash site (which still works by the way, did a Lum out of it)

Q: Name of manga involving multiple ghosts/spirits possessing a girl

PetomJLThere's this manga that I read some time ago that I really liked. The main characters are a boy and a rich (school) girl (eventually they become couple I think?). The details that I remember (vaguely) are kinda long so bear with me. The girl was from a rich family and 'locked' up in a mansion by ...
