@Memor-X The only rebuttal I have is that if he had that much power all on his own, the magical girl system wouldn't need to exist to reverse entropy. It seems probable that Kyubei at the very least needs a sufficient energy source to grant such a powerful wish, and you'll note that while granting the wish his ears go directly into the magical girl to be, to tap into something. However, its been a long time since I saw the series, so the exact words used to explain the rules elude me.

Even if I did remember them, it'd only be the Aniplex translation rather than the original japanese which is probably necessary to understand for something as subtle and complex as this.

@Tonepoet to reverse entropy i think you'd need to alter thermodynamics which would require probably rebooting the universe. while for all we know the "impossible" that a wish causes can be explain by Incubator Science since they can rip a soul out of a body and turn it into something else that maintains the body

and either the Incubators can't do that so won't grant a wish like "i want to alter the laws of thermodynamics" or they do know how to do it but the amount of energy they would need to do so is so great that it's nigh impossibly to accumulate before the universe dies

from my understanding the Incubators were just trying to maintain the status quo of the universe to prevent universal heat death

@Memor-X The latter seems much more likely to me. The whole point of the Magical Girl system was to harvest human emotions as an exceptional source of energy if I recall correctly.

@Tonepoet more or less though they targeted humans because Incubators consider emotions a metal disorder and correct it if i recall what was said to Madoka

@Memor-X I think part of the reason for that was to emphasize just how exceptional it is for an incubator to have emotions in the first place. I don't think they'd care much about what humans do in their own isolated lump of dirt if it wasn't for the whole human battery thing, esp. since Kyubei strongly indicates that they'd be nothing but savages without the historical intervention of the Incubators.

it's about the only period i know of in japan which used both melee weapons like sword and spears and also guns

@Memor-X It just seems like society wouldn't have progressed beyond the stone age at all, so I'm not sure how it's related to episode 11. I suppose there was a brief tour of history, but I don't remember any feudal japan imagery.

@Tonepoet if i recall Episode 11 shows a bunch of historic scenes which is implied that Magical Girls were involved in and thus the existence of that history is because of the Incubators

@Memor-X Speaking of Mami's guns, I vaguely recollect that a Magical Girl's special abilities are linked to her wish. I wonder how Tiro Finale relates to survival...

@Memor-X Conveniently enough, I only watched the television show and read volume 1 of kazumi Magica, which is distinct enough that I know it's not from that...

@Tonepoet well actually Kazumi Magica does explain all it's inconsistencies and ultimately is one of the timelines Homura terminated

@Memor-X Now I'm trying to remember just what happened in the final episode. I remember that the witches were replaced with something else (wraiths?) and that Homura's discussing her memories with Kyubei....

I also remember, that quite strikingly, Tatsuya seems to remember his sister even though nobody else other than Homura seems to be able to do that...

@Tonepoet more or less that's right. if you're thinking why Homura still didn't try going back in time to stop Madoka becoming a god and disappearing there would be no point. Madoka became apart of the universe that would have to exist since the dawn of time (remember that the Incubators have been messing with us since the stone age) and i think if she could Homura would go back in time further to save Madoka

one thing is one of the Drama CDs which is also a Manga now is about Mami and Kyoko before Homura left the hosptital, when they were together. Homura's terminated timelines all start from the moment she wakes up in hospital so despite the chnages in each timeline Mami's and Kyoko's meeting and separation is constant

@Memor-X I thought Homura could only reverse time by resetting the whole universe to the point when she actually made her wish, so that's an interesting plot point...

so more or less it kinda does but i assume when we see Homura start school at the start of the anime, that morning she wakes up in hospital

which is why at the very start Madoka has that dream of Homura fighting Walpurgisnacht by herself

one can conclude that was the previous timeline terminated

or maybe not. i just remembered in episode 10 it was that timeline Madoka killed Walpurgisnacht in one shot and Kriemhild Gretchen looked like a giant tower that was about to destroy the world. Homura then shoots the Incubator and the next scene she is outside Madoka's window warning her while holding a dead Incubator

I might be misremembering everything actually. The moment Homura made her wish must've been after Madoka died in the first timeline. However with that having been said, the point is that it only goes so far back and no further. It vaguely reminds me of the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in that regard, with the whole three years back thing.

and it is also that morning that Madoka was probably made into a Magical Girl too, by guess on her way to school when she sees that cat die

Madoka says she's new to being a Magical Girl and given Mami and Kyoko's past isn't altered by Homura's terminated timelines and before Homura is saved she's been bullied since starting school Homura must then hunt down the Incubator that makes Madoka a Magical Girl and kills it or prevents the cat being killed

This series is going to end with Homura and Madoka never even technically meeting. >_>

@Memor-X Well there's good reason for that! Most video disks go down in price after they go out of print, but in the obsessive anime marketplace it's just the opposite. I recollect that the Pioneer Cardcaptor Sakura DVDs were going for over a thousand bucks on ebay before N.I.S. secured the rights.

@Memor-X I'm not sure about that. I know before the blu-rays were released, that the Funimation dvds were also expensive. It seems to me that usually online retailers try to sell a series for at least double M.S.R.P. once it's out of print.

@Tonepoet locally in Australia DVDs sell for about AUD$60. buying Sailor Moon Crystal DVD Set 2 in the US sells for USD$35.99-39.99 and when you convert the upper value to USD it's still cheaper but that's not including postage and it would be cheaper postage in Australia (and less risk). but Australia rarely has Limited Editions which is what is sold in the US

@Memor-X I wouldn't take now as a good time to gauge value anyway since it's still licensed.

Try to see what happens to the price after Madman Entertainment loses distribution rights.

@Tonepoet they don't stock it. it's what happened with one of the Negima anime series

You know, I never considered a Youki/Rinnosuke pairing predicated on them being the only practical pairing based upon the rule that everybody in Gensokyo is homosexual, because the supposed rule was a fandom joke based upon the fact that there were only females pictured in the series at that time.
