Wrong field. XP

@Memor-X That's a good heuristic, but it's not always like that. Ghost moves (including those that don't make contact) use regular stats, whereas Dragon moves (including those that make contact, like Dragon Claw) use special stats.
It's based on the primary move type only, so all moves of a given type will have use the same kind of stats. So for example, all Poison moves use regular stats (including non-physical ones like Smog). You don't have to think "is Poison Tail physical or not?", you just have to know that it's a Poison type.

@forest They changed that in Gen. 4.
That's what I was trying to explain. XD

I think there's also a separate "physical" status which determines whether or not using the move will result in the attacker getting hurt by things like Rough Skin.
@Tonepoet Yeah well, Gen IV is stupid.
I remember training up a Salamence to have high attack before realizing that Dragon type is only boosted by special stats. It kind of sucked.

1:54 AM
@forest I only learned because it was explained in the Earl's Pokemon Academy of Pokemon Stadium 2. I would've never known otherwise. XD

If I recall, move power is based on the move's individual power, the attack stats that affect the move, the defense stats of the target that affect the move, whether or not STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus, triggered when a move type matches the Pokemon's own primary or secondary type) is in play, and how effective the move is. Plus a small random variable to make it less deterministic. Also status of the enemy (Burn, etc.).
But newer Pokemon games have made it less easy to understand.
While simultaneously being less intuitive.
@Tonepoet I found it out when in Battle Tower or whatever, when a high (>90) level Salamence used Dragon Claw and it barely did anything to its opponent.
I was like wtf, I had an Adamant nature and high EVs!
I think the opponent was one of those Normal type with extremely high special defense but extremely low defense (the marsupial monotreme one whose name escapes me), so it should have taken it out in one hit. But it barely scratched it.

@forest On the bright side, your Salamance might be more useful if you buy Gen IV. I think Dragon Claw is physical now.
You can also transfer it using a D.S. with a G.B.A. slot and pal park.

I played Gen IV before and traded over my Pokemon from Gen III. I always regretted it. I have since restarted Gen III and kept my Pokemon, training them all up.

Heh.

Chansey! That's the one I was thinking. Yeah it was a Chansey.

2:03 AM
Chansey huh? How'd you get that?

It was the opponent.

Oh.

The one I foolishly used a Salamence against.

The worst thing about Chansey is that it has some of the highest H.P. in the game, and a very high special def. stat too.
Terrible def. thogh.

Exactly. Very low regular defense though.

2:05 AM
Can Salamance learn fly?
Or Arial Ace?

Yeah it can, since it's a Dragon/Flying type.
Any Pokemon with a primary or secondary type of Flying can.

Charizard couldn't in red and blue (that changed in yellow though).
@Forest Gyarados.

Whereas Pokemon like Flygon can't since they're Ground type only (I think).
I've also been in stalemates against Chansey. I was in the Battle Factory (Emerald-specific area). Both the enemy Chansey and my Pokemon (like a Latias or something) had Leftovers. We both ran out of PP for all our moves. The battle would never end.
And in Battle Factory, you can't quit. You have to either win or lose (or forfeit).
And Leftovers usually heal more damage than a single Struggle can dish...

Including the recoil? XD

The recoil is practically nothing. :P
Even a critical hit only does slightly more damage than Leftovers can recover.
So I'd need something like 100 critical hits in a row to win (or lose).
And crits are something like a 1/16 chance by default.
The worst thing is when you have maximum evasiveness and Leftovers, and the opponent does as well. You just know that you'll both run out of PP.

2:09 AM
Tape and a turbo controller could help with that, but then again handhelds don't have turbo controllers. XP

As soon as that happens, I forfeit immediately.
@Tonepoet Eh, I did the math back then and calculated that I would be dead long before it naturally happened. I don't think the GBA CPU is fast enough to do it either.

Hmm...

Even if a critical hit was a 1/2 chance, and even if the computation in the CPU required a single integer addition and nothing more, having that occur 100 times in a row would not be possible even with all the world's supercomputers combined.

That reminds me of the Dodrio Gameboy: Sanctioned cheating! =P
x4 speed I think?

Never heard of that.
"No093 DODRIO: TRIPLE BIRD POKEMON"
"Apparently, the heads aren't the only
parts of the body that DODRIO has
three of."
Thank you Pokedex!
All it needs is a ;) added to the end of that description.

2:14 AM
@forest It's a feature you unlock in the Pokemon stadium games. They have a gameboy emulator called Gameboy Tower that you can use with your transfer pack.
It gets upgraded as you progress through the game.

huh
Never played the stadium games.
I only played a bit of Gen I, all of Gen III, and Gen IV once.
Everything after that is just foreign to me.
And downright retarded at times. I mean apparently you can go into a game shop and get a couple of legendary Pokemon for free with the purchase of a Pokemon game, before you even get your starts! I mean wtf? How does that even work?

@forest Stadium is for the N64. It greatly extends the life of the pokemon games because it has level matching in some portions of the game, so if you happen to fully train your pokemon you can actually have decently powered C.P.U. opponents.

I spent hundreds of Ultra Balls on Rayquaza and so many saves that the EEPROM is probably half dead by now already. Hours of sweat and tears, finding and training Pokemon with the best moves for catching it all the way from level 5 to level 50 just so it could survive a few moves and use something like Spore... and nowadays kids just get legendaries for free? I mean they literally start the game with more legendaries than actual Pokemon!
Not to mention how damn common shiny Pokemon are now.
Back in Gen III, it was a 1 in 65536 (I think) chance per wild encounter.
Now it's like what, 1 in 20?
And the new games handhold you through the whole game. You know what it was in Gen III? It gave you a 1 minute tutorial on how to select a move and throw a ball, and that was it. Everything else you learned, you had to learn from talking to NPCs.

@forest I remember you had to have at least 40 ultra balls on you to really stand a chance at catching one of the three legendary birds in Pokemon, and even then you might run out, so you had to save before the fight.

Didn't Gen IV also make Flash so much easier to use in caves? Before that, it only illuminated a portion of a cave. You could still get lost horribly easily.
@Tonepoet Those were in Gen II right? I hadn't played that. Never got a legendary bird Pokemon, sadly (as badass as they are).

2:24 AM
@forest Flash illuminated the whole area since the beginning.

For most of the legendaries, having them at 1 hp would still be like 1-in-20 for an ultra ball.

No it didn't. It just made the circle larger.

@forest Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres.

Except for the legendaries that blocked game progress. Those were easy to catch.
In the newer games, I think they made the legendaries easier to catch.

@Mysticial Yeah, and you can get a higher chance by sleeping them.

2:25 AM
@forest You must be thinking of another R.P.G., like Dragon Quest.

Dude nowadays legendary Pokemon are easier to catch than Zigzagoon.

Either sleep or paralyze them in the red.

In Ultra Moon, once I discovered that you can get all the legendaries from Ultra Space, I ended up burning all my money on ultra balls.
Starting from gen 5, the experience gain algorithm significantly hurt my style of play - which is to have my starter be 10 - 20 levels higher than everything else.
So I started relying heavily on legendaries to get through the game.

That's horrible.
@Tonepoet See it doesn't illuminate it entirely.

2:28 AM
I'd typically go into the elite four with my starter at like level 80 or something. And then a party filled with untrained legendaries.

Hmmm..

And then lots of X-stat items to tank up on each trainer's first pokemon.
Otherwise, I'd stand no chance.

> a party filled with untrained legendaries
So much privilege. :P

@forest I forgot about that, but here's how it worked in gen 1:

Yeah I think that's because of hardware limitations.

2:29 AM
@forest In gen 5, after suffering through the game the first run, I traded a Starmie with Psychic, Surf, Bolt/Beam from gen 4.
Made a Staryu egg with all those moves. And traded it into my next run-through early in the game to use as a starter.

(hatched in the new game to ensure it obeys)

(For those who can't YouTube)
Woah I just realized, are those animated PNGs?
I didn't know anyone used APNG.

Oh and in gen7, once I got all the legendaries I wanted, I burned all my money on clothing. lol

2:34 AM
:p

@Tonepoet That was the coolest thing in stadium. Get through the game in like 3-5 hours.

Well of course a lvl 100 Mewtwo will wreck a lvl 62 Dragonite!

@forest Talkin' 'bout the game speed here. XD

oh lol
You can use a homebrew emulator on NDS too.
That way you can run GB/GBC games at nearly arbitrary speed.
Plus you'll never need to worry about the save battery dying.
That's the best thing about the GBA games. They only have a battery for the internal clock, so your save will survive even if the battery runs dry.

@forest Yeah, I'm pretty sure all of my pokemon are probably dead by now. XD

2:37 AM
Whereas replacing a GBC battery was like doing open heart surgery.

@forest You still had to replace it if you wanted the clock to work, and certain game features relied on the clock.

My Pokemon are so important to me that I've backed up the save file and put it on hard drives with RAID 5.
@Tonepoet Yeah but those features weren't vital. It was mostly just lotteries and growing berries, so you could still replace the battery later when you need to.

@forest For me in gen1+2, I once I figured out the GS codes to set IV and EV, I stopped caring.
Since I can just regenerate them whenever I wanted.

@forest You also couldn't go to the mirage island.

I've never been to that anyway.
It's so hard to get to.
1/65536 chance, and you can only check once a day.

2:39 AM
@forest Yeah, I know. It's just that you don't even have hope without the battery. XD

Which ironically means that, for most people even if they check every single day, they'll max out at 999 hours played (which breaks the clock) without ever getting it.

I had to hack to get to mirage island.

Speaking of hacking, you know what's really irksome?

When I hit 999 (I'm at like 400 or 500), I'll modify my save file to reset that.

In the original japanese versions of the game, you got Mew for otherwise completing your Pokedex....

2:41 AM
@Tonepoet fly glitch

Oh god yeah, all the region-specific events.
>mfw I'll never get Deoxys in Gen III

@Mysticial Yeah, but nobody discovered that for years and who would've thought to leave the kid with the Slowpoke alone?

There are technically other glitches later you can use.
But they're a lot harder (more time consuming) to trigger.

@Tonepoet Don't need to. Just fight a ditto.

Since they basically involve arbitrary code execution.

2:44 AM
Heck, even worse is that they cut the best fight out of the game, battling Oak after defeating Gary would've been awesome...
Especially given what Agatha says about him.
@forest Animated PNG and MNG aren't very popular formats. I'm surprised that Firefox still supports them.

Doesn't Chrome support APNG now too?
APNG is objectively better than GIF, anyway.

@forest I'm not sure. I think Google is pushing WebM though, so I'd be surprised.

Well WebM has a totally different purpose.
While it can be used for brief animations, it's really not nearly as good for what APNG and GIF can do (e.g. inline images with arbitrary scaling, low processor usage, etc).

Hmm, apparently there's something called webp now...
WebP is an image format employing both lossy and lossless compression. It is currently developed by Google, based on technology acquired with the purchase of On2 Technologies. As a derivative of the VP8 video format, it is a sister project to the WebM multimedia container format. WebP-related software is released under a BSD license. The format was first announced on 30 September 2010 as a new open standard for lossy compressed true-color graphics on the web, producing smaller files of comparable image quality to the older JPEG scheme. On October 3, 2011 Google announced WebP support for animation...

huh
>a derivative of the VP8 video format
Oh, then it still won't be ideal for image purposes.

2:54 AM
> Google has proposed using WebP for animated images as an alternative to the popular GIF format, citing the advantages of 24-bit color with transparency, combining frames with lossy and lossless compression in the same animation, and as well as support for seeking to specific frames.
They're trying anyway though.

They just want something to be Google-specific, since they don't control APNG.
It'd be better to just use APNG. The code is already out there. Support isn't terrible.

Microsoft's still not supporting it though, and to be honest, until everybody's on board I think we're stuck with .gif.
It's like qwerty: The install base is too large to ignore. XD

Well Edge is going to switch to Chromium's codebase soon anyway.

Hmmm.
@forest Is there some reason they didn't do that earlier? Is there a change in licensing terms, for instance?

3:10 AM
Dunno. I imagine it's because they wanted to maintain it in-house.
But eventually realized that the Chromium codebase is actually really good.

@forest The reason I ask is because more importantly, it'd have been cheaper for them to give up earlier.
And it's not like it's sold separately.

Not necessarily. Moving a major codebase is hard work, whereas maintaining an existing one is a lot easier.

I wrote a comic about Internet Explorer #4

:3

3:37 AM
The Animated Portable Network Graphics (APNG) file format is an extension to the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) specification. It allows for animated PNG files that work similarly to animated GIF files, while supporting 24-bit images and 8-bit transparency not available for GIFs. It also retains backward compatibility with non-animated PNG files. The first frame of an APNG file is stored as a normal PNG stream, so most standard PNG decoders are able to display the first frame of an APNG file. The frame speed data and extra animation frames are stored in extra chunks (as provided for by the original...
Looks like support is actually really good.
IE and Edge are literally the only popular browsers that lack support.
And who cares about those guys anyway?

3:59 AM
@forest Old people who have difficulty grasping newfangled technological concepts like installers?
This is how Yukari explores the internet. =P

Q: Can Sea Prism Stones be cut or broken?

LarssonI know sea prism stones are extremely hard and can't remember any moment where I have seen anyone to cut or break them. If someone is cuffed with them and he or she happens to be extremely powerful and not a devil fruit eater can he or she break it? Can a swordsman cut it?

@Tonepoet for fuck sake don't do this or i will feel sympathy for IE and Bing

I actually like Bing.
Google has begun heavy censorship in the last decade, and Bing is still much better at giving you what you actually want when you search.

@forest i have not notice because i get my yuri from other sources that wont give me Yuri on Ice and generally when i use google it's either for programming or it's a short cut to fining the website i want. ie "typemoon waver" i will always look for the Type-Moon Wikia

Oh yeah there are better places for yuri (specifically not general-purpose search engines). I was just about general searches, especially of a technical nature.
Best places for yuri are Yuri-ism, *booru, {N,ex,e}hentai. I think that's about all.
(More if you include lolicon yuri, then you get more specific *boorus, or ATF)

7:45 AM
@forest there's also Dynasty Scans for doujin and images but it's not as much. also the 百合 tag on pixiv

Pixiv doesn't work for me because I use Tor.
Since a year or two ago, it just gives a weird "invalid request" error.

@forest well a good reason to not to use Tor then lol
maybe install Chrome or Firefox for just that......
holy fuck your avatar just changed as i was typing

God dammit my fucking icon changed again, randomly.
I don't know. I didn't do anything.

ok it's back to what it was before

There, changed it back manually.
It's weird because it switched to using my Cryptography avatar, yet the user page still said the default being used was my Information Security one...
WHAT THE FUCK
It did it again
There, back to normal.

7:49 AM
huh. that is really, really werid
it's almost as if your parent site is getting changed

WHAT

@forest maybe change Cruptography's avatar to be the same?

No I like having different ones.
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 24 secs ago, by forest
Specifically, my default profile picture is my Information Security one, but when I click the "move this convo to chat" button, not only does the convo not get moved (it doesn't create a new post with the link to the chat), but my avatar changes to my Cryptography one on all sites. When I look at my chat user settings, it says the default is Information Security (which it should be, but which is not displaying), so I have to change it away and back again for it to work.
I reported it on Meta chat.
Let's see what happens
This is freaking weird.

@forest yeh. i only expect that when someone updates their avatar but it;s never like that because Cache

I can trigger it (on just one comment thread, at least) reliably.
Can't on another site. Haven't tried yet on another thread on the same site.

8:03 AM
I have finished Netflix's Castlevania
It was fun

@Gallifreyan both seasons?

Yep

@Memor-X Hey at least you're not feeling bad for ME-tan!

@forest ME wasn't that bad. atleast it didn't force you to reset while you was in the middle of something

(I have a guilty pleasure - I like using older Windows OSes)
98 is what I used when I was a kid. Maybe 95 too.
But I remember when XP came out. It was so novel lol
Then Windows 7 came out and I (re)discovered Linux...

@Memor-X looks like it
Griffith gonna conquer it all

@Avka he's not going to conquer anything if the anime just keeps looping how he became femto
we get it already, he made a pact with a bunch of demon sovereign and raped his friend's partner out of spite. can we please get on with it and start seeing some of the fights with the God Hand already

@Tonepoet bastard, making me read that again and have feels

@Memor-X Oh, that's not the worst of it. Have you seen the deepweb arch with Netscape? XD

@Tonepoet no but i assume it's an OS-Tan thing and kinda worried how horrifying sick it would be if deepweb is just another name for the Dark Net

@Memor-X Eh, it's more of Merryweathery's work. it doesn't focus so much on the content as it does on the browsers themselves though.

11:41 PM
@Tonepoet dem Chrome eyes

@forest Y'know, when you say that, I'm more prone to thinking of a metallic color for some reason. XP

I thought of that too when I posted it.

Q: Can Genos do something to increase his power other than changing his parts?

PabloSo Genos follows Saitama as master and Saitama the only thing that knows for increasing a hero power is training. Can Genos do any kind of training to increase his power? Or he just can increase his power when he changes his parts?

@forest Anyway yeah, Merryweather did a good job giving some of the browsers a personality. I do think the best work is for Netscape though. Without making anybody sob more than they already have, I think this is really the only post I can use to demonstrate the look:
Netscape Navigator was one of the earliest web browsers to be widely available to the general public. After the 1990's, its use had disappeared completely.

aw :3
Is there one for WorldWideWeb? :P

11:47 PM
The starry night colored hair is a very nice touch, and Netscape always did have the classiest logo...

It really did. Very professional.

@forest I don't think there is.

damn
