@Tonepoet well how many do they have now? they already started trying to make Pokedex Pokemon

@Memor-X I don't even know how many pokemon there are anymore. Last I remember it was over seven hundred.
That was a couple of generations ago though.

1:44 AM
@Memor-X I'm pretty sure Hitmonchan would insist to be called Hitmonsama.
In fact, Hitmonchan was probably a nickname name invented by Hitmonlee while Hitmonchan was still a tyrogue that he won't let die, to tease Hitmonchan. XP

@Tonepoet or the Hitmons are just names for her they want to fight all the time, Hit-More- Jet -Li
Hit-More- Jackie -Chan
and then there's their lost cousin, Hitmonnorris

@Memor-X Probably more along the lines of hit monster, but the reason why you don't find hit monster norris is because the appropriate name of the pokemon is hitgodnorris. =P
It's responsible for the big bang that created Arceus.
It looks like a hitmontop, except with three of Chuck Norris' almighty legs.

Just dropped $520 for a bunch of SSDs that I'm not gonna need for a while because of this:

@Mysticial what are they?

2 of each of these:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820331115
Seeing as it takes years for a price hike cycle, I'm just gonna horde some SSDs now and hope it'll last me for 5 years.

@Mysticial I'm glad I don't really rely on SSDs. :P
I prefer good old spinning rust.

@forest I lost my patience for HDs after my 2nd SSD. (my 1st SSD sucked) lol

@Tonepoet And yet of the 6 Pokemon you listed that those were derived from, I only recognized Mudkip, Whooper, and Squirtle... I gave up after gen III.
@Mysticial I use a small caching SSD and 3 HDDs in RAID 5.

I use a moderate size SSD (500GB) as a boot drive and put all the bulk on an HD or external(s).
Most of the my "bulk" is actually over the network on my laptop/NAS.

Caching SSDs are nice because it automatically optimizes.
So I don't need to waste SSD space with boot files that aren't accessed frequently.
(Hardware hybrids like SSHDs are garbage though)

How big is your SSD?
My first SSD was 64 GB. Not really large enough at the time. But enough to play with.
It was one of the original write-bricking SSDs. So I hated it.

7:37 AM
I have two 512 GiB SSDs kept in RAID 0 (caching three 10 TiB HDDs in RAID 5).

Oh that's pretty good.

It's quite excessive. I could have gotten away with even 32 or 64 GiB.
But I wanted that extra space in case I needed a lot of swap. I do have plenty of memory (64 GiB), but I also run a lot of heavy virtual machines and the like.
So it's bigger than I need, but at least I don't have to worry about write amplification!

I have a ton of SSDs. Mostly because I have a ton of machines. Interestingly, my main machine is using a SATA3 SSD while my laptop and my other desktop have NVMe SSDs. I don't use the latter 2 that much.

I have a (likely irrational) bias against SSD reliability.

All my SSDs are around 500 GB large except for a 120 GB one that came with my laptop.

7:41 AM
When I was first exposed to SSDs back when they were measured in megabytes, I had so many die on me after heavy use that the relatively recent trend of SSDs being able to outlive HDDs is hard for me to accept.
Also, HDDs are a lot cheaper for huge amounts of data.

I primarily have 3 uses for storage.
1. Boot drive. (SSD)
2. Bulk drive. (Anime, music, etc... all on external HD over NAS)
3. Workstation. (16 x 2TB HDs)
As much as I'd love to use SSDs for #3, I can't because they'll all die in a year.
So I have these two ugly towers under one of my desks.

My boot drive is a floppy disk. :D
(really)
I like keeping an external bootloader, and floppy disks fit it perfectly.

wuut
lol

I kind of want to get an LTO tape drive for bulk storage...
Since the tape itself can be so cheap.
LTO-12 is supposed to support 192 TiB of storage!
And should be dirt cheap.
But only LTO-8 (12 TiB) is available right now.

7:57 AM
Tape storage has terrible seek latencies though. So it's good only for backups I'm guessing?

Yeah. Very good for incremental backups (e.g. duplicity).

@forest I haven't played since Gen. III myself. I was terribly disappointed that I couldn't transfer my level 100 Pokemon from gen. 1 and 2, after the expectation that I should be able to do that had been set. Then they made significant changes to the battle mechanics in diamond and perl too, which also put me off. I still kept up with some of the most notable ones though. Buneary was featured on the show for a while as one of Dawn's pokemon for instance:
Dawn being the playable female character of the diamond and pearl series. Ash has had a strange tendency to team up with the female playable characters as his traveling companions ever since Misty left the show.

Q: How could the girl in spirited away tell which pigs were her parents?

MissfunnyninjaI dont remember how she knew if the pigs were her parents or not ;-;

Meanwhile Pachirisu is one of the ever so popular pikaclones:
lets keep swimming, lets keep swimming ~ #Pachirisu #pokemon #finneon #nintendo #beach
Chimchar was a starter pokemon, and Torterra was the final evolution of a starter pokemon. Strangely enough, I suspect it's all Gen IV stuff, but don't quote me on that since I'm not sure.

12:48 PM
@Tonepoet awwww, isn't that cute
@Tonepoet how do you mean changes to battle?

@Memor-X Sure is.
@Memor-X Mostly how the stats. work. In Pokemon you have two pools of attacks: Regular attacks which were affected by the attacter's att. and the defender's def., and then you have special attacks, which are either entirely determined by the special stat (gen 1) or special att. and special def. (gen 2 onwards).
Before you used to be able to determine what kind of attack belonged to which pool simply by knowing what type of attack it was. Rock, ground and fighting type attacks belonged to the regular pool, whereas water, electric and fire types belonged to the special pool.
From Gen IV onwards, this was changed to be determined on a per attack basis.
So whereas fire punch, thunder punch and ice punch were special attacks before, they became physical attacks after gen III.
I prefer the old system 'cause it's much easier to remember the 15 or so types than each of the hundreds of attacks.

@Tonepoet i always considered any attack that you physically have to touch your opponent to be regular while anything that doesn't is Special

@Memor-X I think that's the general principle they were going with from gen. IV onward, but it's hard to be sure, especially since there might be exceptions: Like what about earthquake for instance?

@Tonepoet i assume special because it's the ground doing the damage

1:06 PM
@Memor-X Hmm, well let's see: Aparently it remained a physical attack, according to Bulbapedia. I think the idea there is that making the earth shake is a feat of strength there...

@Tonepoet so then all rock moves would be physical then? like Rock Throw?

@Memor-X That's how it would've worked in Gen I, II, and III.
I couldn't tell you anything beond that.
@Memor-X Apparently, Ancient Power is a special type rock move these days.
So yeah, I don't want to have to memorize every move.

Q: fate stay night unlimited blade works ending

LegendsNeverDie21Why do saber and archer choose to fade away rather than staying in the real world with Rin and Shirou? This is one of the most confusing things in Unlimite Blade Works for me to understand. I just cant get a grasp on this and have searched and thought about it for very long.

Q: Who is faster Flashy Flash or Speed of Sound Sonic?

PabloAt some point in the webcomic the speed of Flash Flash attack is given, it takes centi seconds to perform each attack. I suppose his speed can be calculated if you know the distance of his attacks. I dont know if Speed of Sound Sonic speed is given or it can be calculated (though probably has to ...

Q: Why is calling Tohru amazing an insult to her?

J.CIn the first episode of the new show, after learning more about Tohru's life, Yuki says she's amazing. In response Shigure tells him it's an insult to call her that. Yuki agrees, but I frankly didn't understand what they meant by that.
