TIL Japanese men mostly don't use "watashi" to refer to themselves
Now that exchange from Your Name makes sense
Japanese pronouns (or Japanese deictic classifiers) are words in the Japanese language used to address or refer to present people or things, where present means people or things that can be pointed at. The position of things (far away, nearby) and their role in the current interaction (goods, addresser, addressee, bystander) are features of the meaning of those words. The use of pronouns, especially when referring to oneself and speaking in the first person, vary between gender, formality, dialect and region where Japanese is spoken. == Use and etymology == In contrast to present people and things...

@Gallifreyan yeh from my limited understanding they can but generally don't

@Gallifreyan Don't forget nice goat. =P

Q: Whats the song at the end of Tokyo Ghoul Re Season 2 Episode 1

AjireWhats the song in Tokyo Ghoul RE season 2 episode 1 just before kaneki meets Hinami and says lets go. Starts at 21:23 when the sirens go off.

@Gallifreyan being Sakamoto is just suffering
Nakamura didn't know anything about how to raise a cat and was feeding him instant noodles
but now Hakase causes him a lot of grief as well
like that time she dragged him out for a walk with the collar leash
that looked super uncomfortable
instant karma tho

Q: How did Trafalgar Law get to and leave Marineford?

Akaisteph7My question is two-fold: How did Trafalgar Law and the other "Worst Generation" pirates get to Marineford? I thought you had to go through the tri-currents? Or is that the tri-currents are just a faster way but you can come any other way since Marineford is not in the calm belt? How did Trafal...

2:06 AM
@Gallifreyan afaik in formal situations, most Japanese use watashi, but in everyday informal cases, they use the pronoun they want to

@ahiijny the white dog remind me of Excalibur

E.g., my bosses mostly use boku or ore
I for one mostly use watashi, but I really want to use ore sometime soon
Oh and yeah, I heard that if you are a foreigner and you use another pronoun besides watashi to refer to yourself, you're signalling to the listener your ability to speak in Japanese
Good morning btw :)

2:36 AM
Hahahaha I remember that video. That probably happens in other places, but in my experience, whenever I ask something in Japanese (e.g. directions to certain places/inquiries about products), I get a response in Japanese as well. However when my friends attempt to do the same (ask in Japanese) they get responses in English.

Trivia: Without looking them up online. Which of these 4 pokemon cards are the most valuable? And why?

I assume that it's because of the way I speak in Japanese, my bosses have praised my pronunciation and intonation as natural-sounding in the past

They are all from the same set and have the same (ultra) rarity.

I'm pretty sure I picked this up from watching too much anime

@Mysticial those 4

2:43 AM
that's not an answer
lol

oh wait your asking which of those 4. i thought you was asking which are the 4 most valuable cards
the third one

So the Lisia?

@Mysticial yes

What's your reasoning?

@Mysticial aside from the fact that you can draw without discarding (or in the 2nd one's case, putting the cards at the bottom of the deck), the character on it is the cutest out of all of them

2:51 AM
Correct. And the 2nd reason you gave is the correct reason.
The playability of the card doesn't matter since the same cards exist in common and uncommon format.
So the value of modern hyper rare pokemon cards has partially devolved into waifu tax value.
When I read about it, I was like really? REALLY?!?!? FFS, reallllly?

@Mysticial it's probably like that for every card game

Oh wow seriously? I thought so as well, but I thought that was ridiculous so I didn't respond
Then again, my most expensive Yugioh card is Dark Magician Girl in her latest art so...

@Keale Same. So I started looking it up and reading around the different forums. No kidding, "waifu tax" is one of the larger factors for determining card value. And there are people who openly admit to "collecting female full art cards". ("full art" cards are the hyper rares here)

Ahh yeah. Got her for 6000 JPY :v
Roughly 55 USD hahaha
Well, can't blame them really.
If people openly whale for digital cards on gacha games, what's stopping them from paying a high price for physical cards

3:06 AM
I've read the Yu-Gi-Oh manga before but come to think of it I still don't actually know how to play any of these card games

Same haha. Though I would like to learn how to play MTG

@Keale That's a lot. Is that an old card? Or just an "unusually expensive" still-in-print card? (I know nothing about Magic TCG.)

I think there are a lot of factors that played into that card's cost. It is an old card, a support card of the main character of the anime, and a waifu card too.
The fact that it is an old card with a new art probably played into the cost too
As well as probably there is a number of fans like me who had a 'crush' on that specific card while watching the anime

haha

Btw, that card is Dark Magician Girl. The anime's mc's signature card is Dark Magician
So yeah, it is a special card
So when I saw the price, I didn't really think that it was overly expensive

3:21 AM
Looks like there's NSFW versions of that card. lol

Hmm I guess that's rule 34 in play

rule 34?

Ohh sorry. Did I just say something I shouldn't have?

no, I'm confused
Oh, it's meme.
I didn't know that.
TIL

Well it was kind of a 'law' of the internet, and unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately?) it seems to hold true
Let's not delve into that topic anymore haha
Really makes you wonder though
Is there some sort of scientific paper discussing the economics of the Otaku market?

3:26 AM
Probably.

I've been thinking about this for a while now, but the Otaku market is so irrational
It's hard to predict its behavior

But pokemon was one of the last places I expected Anime waifu tropes to show up since it's more aimed at kids. But when I look at the modern TCG sets. They've clearly broken it up to target both markets.
All the cards are available in some for in the lower rarities. So that way its playable. Specifically chosen cards are then reprinted at the end of the set with much better art and ultra rarity. Those target the collectors.

Well you can't always trust the targeted audience solely being the audience

And unlike 20 years ago, these modern sets are much more difficult to "complete the set" because of how rare the rare cards are and how many of them there are total. And then you have external factors like "waifu tax" and the "charizard tax" driving up the price of specific cards.

Charizard Tax?? First time I've heard of that hahaha

3:33 AM
@Keale Yes, every single goddamn holographic Charizard or higher is inflated compared to other cards of the same rarity in the same set.
For like all the sets that have existed.
I'm not sure what the appeal of Charizard is. It's probably just a snowball effect of people hording them because it's more valuable.

Hahahaha the otaku market is really interesting
It's like, a product will have an exponentially higher profit if you put Nagato, Haruhi or Asahina's face on it than if it has Kyon's face
It doesn't really make any sense

The Charizard tax is higher than the waifu tax for pokemon TCG.

But for someone inside the fandom, it makes sense for me, but I can't explain it
It's probably the same with Charizard?
Probably nostalgia, or coolness factor. Or as you said, a snowball effect

coolness factor I'll buy. Charizard is definitely cool looking and some of the most complicated artwork.
But I can't imagine it being strong enough to drive a card from $10 to $150.

It's probably like the death of the dinosaurs. There's no one true cause :)
Probably a combination of a different factors
10 to 150 USD, that's a big jump!
15x? Definitely not the coolness factor alone

3:41 AM
I'm talking about this (still in print) card: beta.trollandtoad.com/pokemon/sun-moon-burning-shadows-singles/…
Similar cards in the same set of the same rarity are only like $10.
The playability factor should be minimal (not more than 2x) for the collector rarities since they exist in more common forms.

Pretty fine, solving random issues as usual

Sounds like fun

just came back from a discussion with my manager...
told him that i may be leaving because i got another offer that is more in the direction of project management then pure development
because i kind of lost spark for just programming
and that i am looking for new challenges.
in the end he said he is happy that i am willing to change, that they have the same position for me available here
got a raise?
and he told me if i get a better offer from the other company that they will match it?

That sounds pretty intresting ;o

eh, looks like they want to keep you :p

Q: OST in season 2 of magi episode 7 around 2mins right after the opening?

CarlyleThis I've been searching for this song for a good hour or so, checked both seasons' OST and still left with no trace of this song existing on either of them :( . If someone could find this song that would be dope🙏🏾

10:30 AM
@Sakamoto before anyone asks, no it doesn't ring any bells
though i have heard of What Does the Fox Say and that's actually a Manhwa
if it's a similar style i would think it's a yuri Manhwa

i do not know it is weird situation over all. I would like to try something new, but then again there are to many problems at the current place(i already complained) about them. On the other hand i am not sure if i want to be a "professional" programmer because i am currently burned out but maybe that has to do with the situation at work.

@Proxy hmmm, it does sound like you need a break from it

ye, but maybe the company is the problem... i will have to think about it. Maybe if they agree to what i am asking i can try to remain here and then switch.

@Keale that explains why we exclusively learned watashi in our class

@Proxy well at the rate things are going either that, take the new job or maybe look for something low key and do programming on the side for yourself

12:31 PM
yeah
did you get smash for switch @Memor-X?

@Proxy not yet
but i did pre-order this
and i also pre-ordered the limited editions of the first 2 games on PS4

that plush ;O

i am planing on picking up tales of vesperia

@Proxy my copy came in the other day

would be my first tales game but it looks it takes a long time to complete
have you played it?

12:35 PM
@Proxy it does. Tales of Symphonia took me over 40 hours and Tales of Legendia to be over 70
@Proxy not yet. i had brought it for the 360 and was going to play it after Xillia 2 but then the Definitive Edition was announced
it's still planned for after Xillia 2 but now the 360 has one less exclusive on it
Naruto: Rise of a Ninja and Naruto: The Broken Bond are the only ones left

12:51 PM
besides ms exclusives the xbox was pretty meh. The only 2 interesting games from the original one for me were brute force and DoA 3
brute force had a dinosaur as playable character, i was 13 then :)

@Proxy yeh i remember playing it

1:39 PM
was it any good? @Memor-X

@Proxy i enjoyed the story to it and i liked the missions were i was breaching facilitys. wasn't a fan of the lava world levels
