@ton.yeung Right now, I have a 16 hard drive setup in two external towers which I use to test IO-intensive code. They can sustain about 1.5 GB/s of bandwidth.

They are connected into the box through a pair of PCIe x8 SATA cards - each with 8.

Price aside, I can run 4 of those - each with 4 x m.2. Still 16 drives. But assuming there's no bottleneck in the either the SATA cards or the PCIe, we're talking almost 8 GB/s bandwidth.

@ton.yeung The SATA m.2s go for the same as 2.5 in. SSDs.

I'm thinking sometime later, I might get one of those with 4 x Samsung 850 EVO 500GB. That's about $650. And it will already have more bandwidth than my entire 16HD setup.

Pretty good.

It lets me code on the road. But compile times are still annoying in the 30+ min. range.

That's not something that can be fixed by throwing money at it since that's already the highest end CPU.

@ton.yeung When I'm on the road, I code on it. Otherwise, I run benchmarks on it since it's the only Skylake box I have.

I plan on adding a 500GB m.2 SATA SSD to it as well as Linux.

If my dad needs a 1TB notebook HD, I'll give him mine and put a 2TB in its place.

That laptop has more ram than my storage workstation. (48GB vs. 32GB)

My storage workstation is the one that I'm toying with the idea with that m.2 SSD thing.

PCIe 2.0 x8.

PCIe 2.0 x8 is 4 GB/s.

Each SSD maxes out at about 500 MB/s. With 8/card, that's also 4GB/s.

So no bottleneck there.

If there's no bottleneck in the controller either, I think it might really be possible for me to see 8 GB/s IO bandwidth with 16 m.2 SSDs.

@ton.yeung No. I write and run a lot of code that uses a lot of disk-IO.

In the past I stayed away from SSDs because of the write wear. But for dev purposes, I'm not writing to them 24/7 at full load. I maybe do something smallish once a week or so.

So the SSDs aren't gonna die that easily.

It's that stupid Pi program that I still maintain as a hobby.

I regularly run computations of 100+ billion digits of various things as an integration test.

Those runs easily require terabytes of memory which is a tad too much for ram.

I tell everybody who uses my program not to use SSDs since they will die. But I don't necessarily have to follow that rule myself since I'm not hammering them 24/7.

There's also some bragging rights to having 16x SSDs. Especially in a relatively small form factor.

Did I tell you that 2/4 times in the last month I got held at the airport?

That laptop is fucking huge. And they didn't recognize the logo or name.

Since it's not a Mac, a Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, etc...

They were like, "What the hell is this thing?"

It only became obvious once they opened the lid.

I'm actually starting a new job in the latter half of March.

Same industry though.

That last one was a bit of a death trap. I can't go into details because of the NDA.

I actually have two offers on the table right now. And I'll be picking one in the next day or so.

Since I live in the heart of downtown which is literally next to everything as far as work goes.

But it's expensive.

My rent in increasing to 2400/month. So I'm moving out after one more year.

I can afford it no problem - along with my computer stuff. But that's not a good use of money.

The last 2 months for me have been endless traveling and interviews. In the end, the best ones were still in Chicago.
