more rep like you? isn't 10K rep already open all privilege?

That's why I don't need more rep
4k opens everything on beta
So other people should answer instead of me
Once we graduate I'll need 20k for everything, but I'll probably keep going past that unless there's a good reason to stop.

HAMMERTIME!

@HoiHoi-san Yes, good job.

@HoiHoi-san nice
@LoganM 20k? that's... a lot rep -_-

@ShinobuOshino Not really. It's pretty trivial to get 1k per month when you try.
20k wouldn't even take 2 years at that rate.
but most of the current top users are all less active now, so we've been getting less recently.

12:09 AM
well PeterRaeves is the most promising user so far, since he almost get 1k in 1 month
but that's only one user

@ShinobuOshino You've only been here 7 months and are already in the top 20 users. That's pretty good in my book.
But there are other promising relatively new users.
Just so long as people coming here still have avenues to gain rep, I'm not really worried.
that's why I'm actually happy about the fact that we have a few hundred unanswered questions, which tend to be biased towards lesser known series (where IMO we especially need more experts just because they aren't as well covered).

well thanks, I'm pretty excited since my knowledge about anime can be actually useful for other people, it something that I never thought until I found this site really
I don't know that we have that much unanswer question

@LoganM gotta figure out which are needed and which are not
Arise and original GITS are different enough

I think we had some debate about SAC at one point or another
Keep in mind though that new tags should be based on how helpful they actually are. If there's a lot of overlap between them (to the point that someone who only knows about GitS could still answer a lot of Arise questions) then it's not worth a separate tag. Also, if the tags are low enough volume anyway, then it's saving everyone the work of adding 2 or 3 separate tags to favorites/ignore list by combining them.
But I'm now more in favor of something like tag self-determination. If the top users in a tag want it to be a single tag, then keep it as a single tag. If they want a split (and are willing to manage it being split), then split it. That's the only way I can see this scaling as our number of tags increases.

12:28 AM
the guys in sci-fi has lot double tag for series tho, they separate it even if it's the same story

I don't think Scifi's tagging scheme is very good
Nor is Movies & TV

separate tags for everything distinct are better in long term perspective
if lots of questions are gonna appear, users will have to specify which series they mean in every question with a shared tag
and as for favorite/ignored tags, I'd rather have a 1-click ignore option
my question list is always transparent with a few exceptions

@LoganM lol I didn't even read the question.
I just saw the title "depressing" and I knew it was Clannad.

12:45 AM
every time I see an unnecessarily capitalized word in a question title, I hate the op a little
and when I have power, I decapitalize it
example: Need Help on Finding The most Depressing anime I've Ever seen

@ton.yeung why you hate leet tok?
wut?

on arqade especially nonsensical
that would instantly get a mod flag from me

Q: Which Is More Fundamental, Fields or Particles?

jpbrooks-user153707I hope that I am using appropriate terminology. Of course, you can't really do it, unless there's a flaw in Andrew Wiles' proof. I mean fake it, by...

Q: Why do xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE use mixed casing?

Memor-XAs you can see in the title and from the xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE Anime News Network Pages pages, the titles for these 2 use mixed casing, on the wikipedia page they have the japanese name as ツバサ-RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE- Tsubasa: Rezaboa Kuronikuru I am wondering if there is a r...

@user1306322 this because of title I guess?

I wasn't serious about the last example

1:15 AM
@Eric lol the OP even said it isn't Clannad.
> Hopefully it ring some bells to someone, every time I hear that Clannad is a sad anime I think "not really" and think back on this one. But I simply do not remember the name, so I can't give them an example of a truly sad and depressing anime.
I thought you were saying Clannad to be ironic but if not that's even funnier
@user1306322 There's an argument both ways. In one case, it's a question itself, so by standard English it shouldn't be capitalized. But it's also the title of the post, which should have most words capitalized.
Because of that, I always have trouble titling my questions.
Recently I've been avoiding capitalizing it, but I'm always wary that I might be breaking fundamental rules of grammar by doing so.

1:43 AM
@LoganM Nope, wasn't being ironic. lol
That's hilarious

grammar rules that result in text being less readable can go "do" themselves imo
I've seen some newspaper front pages that have all words capitalized, and that kinda looks sensible
but on a page with only the titles it just messes up character height balance

I do have to say that anyone who says Clannad is the most depressing anime they've seen probably hasn't seen much anime. I mean, there are parts that are sad, but it has a happy ending. Pretty much any utsuge ever is going to be more depressing than it.

what's up with these spelling mistakes anime.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/7688

It fixes about as much as it messes up.
I'd go through and correct everything but that would require effort.

Is Sabagebu basically going to be C3-bu without the strange Gainax plot and with more cute moments?
If so I'm 100% on board.

There's nothing wrong with this limited, self-contained use of goto. But beware, goto is a gateway drug and if you're not careful you will one day realize that no one else eats spaghetti with their feet, and you've been doing it for 15 years starting after you thought "I can just fix this otherwise nightmarish bug with a label ..." — Tim Post ♦ Jun 26 at 14:12
(looks at his feet tangled in spaghetti) well, shit

I've used fortran code so old that its main flow control was computed gotos.
Goto itself is something that is okay at times; in fact, there are cases where it's faster than literally every other option.

I somehow managed to confuse my c# teach with my use of gotos, he had me rewrite it in all unique cases in form of an algo diagram branching outwards from a giant sheet of paper
I wrote it as a joke, but he didn't appreciate it
now I never use it, I just return if something isn't true
I know my code isn't fast, but it's more readable that way
all variables and methods have descriptive names, which is always good for when you're tired and don't know what you're looking at

Readability of code is secondary to accuracy and speed in scientific computing.

I code for fun, only

5:45 AM
The number of people who need to understand any given code can usually be counted on one hand.

it's usually me every next rewrite or debug

But it has to be fast, because basically every nontrivial simulation needs as much computing time as you can give it, and then you just hope you get something remotely correct.
Anyway I don't do any scientific computing any more, but it's pretty different from software engineering in terms of considerations (from what I understand)

my pc is seven years old, it doesn't compute as fast as modern ones :p

My laptop is almost 5 years old.
But that's why we have computing clusters in the first place
because it would be stupid for everyone who needs to do any kind of simulation to have dozens of CPUs which are idle 90% of the time

I once bought 8GB ram for my pc to do some heavy multiboxing in a few games
used it 2 months, never had the need in it afterwards
but it was fun, and for science :p

5:51 AM
For one project I was doing, we had a comp with 32 GB of ram. The professor bought it with a grant. I think he had like $10k to spend on a computer.

I bet you could've come up with a more efficient solution and saved $8k

Nah the ram wasn't the expensive part

the motherboard that supported 8 ram sticks?

Also I don't think he spent the full 10k on it. That was the total value of the grant, but there were other expenses.
Keep in mind he also bought it 7 or 8 years ago.

now that I think about it, a single university student's year of education costs approximately $10k in some unis

5:54 AM
I think the most expensive thing was the software.
@user1306322 In the US, it's easily more than $60k at some universities. Which is rather outrageous IMO

shit that's too much
who even has that kind of money

yeah way too much
only rich people
but they do have some financial aid, and people take out loans

I imagine only yakuza boss' kids could afford it

Its about 10k in Ireland if its not your first time at university
First time is subsidised to about 3

I hope they include a course of "How to pay back all these loans" for all that dough

5:56 AM
Even at $60k per year, it's still worth it to go to college. Though not if you go into some fields

aww I wanted to go into some field >.>

For example, an English degree doesn't help you at all.
It does open some career paths, like being an English teacher, but they're all low paying. So financially it's a bad decision, though if it's something you want to do then finances aren't the only consideration.
In any case, I got a full scholarship for undergrad, so I ended up actually making money by going to college. But if I hadn't had that, being an out-of-state student at a state school, I would have probably been spending $30-40k per year.
At my current school, the undergrads are all spending over $50k. But grad students (at least in physics and most other sciences) don't pay anything.

Why do grads not pay anything?

It's a job, so we get paid, though it's not particularly good money.
@ToshinouKyouko Officially, the department pays my tuition. But in reality, no money changes hands.

Hmm
Grad students here are more expensive that undergraduates

6:02 AM
Do you have teaching/research assistantships?
I'm a teaching assistant, which is why they pay me

Until you get to doing your PhD and then you get those

Well I am a PhD student so I guess that makes sense

But if you're doing a masters, its not great

In the US, at least, universities have to report the fraction of their graduate PhD students who are supported to various grant organizations like the NSF. If it's anything less than 100%, that can hurt chances at getting funding even for professors.
So in the sciences, virtually every PhD student is supported somehow
But in humanities that isn't the case.

Well, I can understand why research investment in Art History or etc isn't as valued
Not of great commercial benefit

6:07 AM
I guess the real distinction is that in the US there are very few terminal masters programs in a lot of scientific disciplines. For my current program, I couldn't even apply to be a masters-only student. You apply as a PhD student directly after undergrad, but during the course of that (5-6 year) program you essentially do everything for a masters as well.

Anyhoo, I have to go to work so I'll be back later

See you
I should probably go home soon since it's 2 AM here
lol

lol maybe

Q: In the 2003 anime FMA, what is the ingredients for a Homunculi to be made?

アズーサReferring to the 2003 anime FMA, what is the exact process to creating an homunculus? I haven't watched the anime in a little while but if this makes sense I am looking for the ingredients that are put together to make a Homunculi in the 2003 anime. I do remember that Edward used the composition...

@ShinobuOshino Also waiting for it? :P

yeah, but still, I won't watch it until it finish airing

@ShinobuOshino Hahaha, it'll be 24 episodes, so you'll have a while to wait :P

I'm fine with that, it only takes what, half year?
it's not that long

6:36 AM
You either live slowly or are very patient, I would not be able to wait that long xD

@Magikaas you do other things!

@user1306322 Like what?! For half a year! D:

watch… anime?

@Magikaas both actually, t's not like I don't have any other anime to watch

@user1306322 Like SAO 2?
@ShinobuOshino Good point I guess :P What're you watching week by week then this summer season?

6:40 AM
I won't wait a week for next episode, I rather have to wait half year for whole series than wait one week for next episode
and when it finish airing, it's time for my torrent to shine
I'm not proud to say I'm a pirate

@ShinobuOshino I download anime, but buy them if I enjoy them, I don't watch anime I don't enjoy more than 2-3 episodes usually anyway. 3 episode rule :P
@ShinobuOshino Might as well dl them as they come out to help seeding and so you won't have the problem of one of the episodes losing seeders

@Magikaas If I download it now, I have a temptation to watch it immediately

@ShinobuOshino Hahaha, good point :P That won't work if you are weak to that sort of temptation

I remember there's one anime that takes me 11 episode to started to get interested with

@ShinobuOshino I'll usually ask the guys I hang out with on teamspeak who may have watched it or know other people who have watched it, if they enjoyed it or thought I might enjoy it in later episodes, I'll give it another go

6:46 AM
I usually looked it up at some anime rate site, if it's good and have a lot recommendation, I usually tried to watch half way through before I decide to finish it or not
sometimes it takes 3 eps, sometimes 6, and one time, it takes 11 eps

@ton.yeung Am now, what's up?

@ShinobuOshino If I have time to spare and nothing to watch but anime I am not sure I'll enjoy I'll look at those, but I do still have a backlog I'm trying to work through, so there's that :P

that's what I usually do, I have at least 30 anime in my hard drive, waiting for me to watch
I download it because they have high rate, but I couldn't find myself interested with any of that though fast look in first episode so they're all in my waiting list now
hmm,, there's no match today, I guess I can sleep early...

Hehe

7:02 AM
I just hope they don't screw GGO like they did in ALO

@ShinobuOshino What do you mean by that? I see so many people hating on ALO, but I enjoyed it (thought that could be because I wanted to see if it looked like what I imagined to look like when I read the Light Novel)

I was gonna give SAO 10/10 but then there's ALO
I dont read the LN but watched the anime I must say I'm dissapointed
it's not that bad but watching SAO arc I expect something more from ALO

@ShinobuOshino Yeah, I guess not nearly as much happened in ALO compared to SAO, but I think GGO will be great, if they don't f**k it up immensely
xD
@ShinobuOshino And with a little luck they'll add Mother's Rosario

7:20 AM
@Magikaas and what is that?

@ShinobuOshino A sort of sidestory-esque arc, don't want to say much more about it to avoid possibly spoiling
@ShinobuOshino If they do that one right, though, it'll have plenty of nice action scenes at least and also quite a lot of feels

ahhh,, thanks... I hate spoiler
thats sounds nice
but there's a temptation to google it

@ShinobuOshino Sorry ._.
@ShinobuOshino SAO Wiki has a nice spoiler-free description of it though, if you can't resist
It explains it quite well imo
But without adding too many details
If this 24 episode batch goes well enough for them to make more, I'll be even more hyped for what's next xD But I can't get ahead of myself :P

I think I can hold it right now
because I need to go home

hehe, then I'll stop for now :P
Ah okay, have a good trip then =)
And gnight :P

7:29 AM
good day!
:p

Thanks :P

7:54 AM
@ShinobuOshino I thought the LN was decent, dont really want to watch the anime though
also there is like 7 novels or something, i only got through 1 and a bit

@ToshinouKyouko :o
@ToshinouKyouko I'd recommend it, enjoyed reading it on the train from and to work :P

Its a bit too shounen for me

@ToshinouKyouko I see, hehe :)

needs more cherry blossoms :D

Hahaha :P
Oh man, Daimidaler OP again xD
A lot of repetition, but some good music on anime internet music station :P
