12:05 AM
@Krazer There actually isn't much that can be done about it.
If they subscribe to the RSS feed or bookmark a question... I mean like. They probably don't have much intention to visit the rest of the site.
Unless they find it interesting enough.

@Mysticial And that's the hook, how can we make more interesting questions?

@Krazer That's tough... Most of the interesting ones are asked by us... lol

@Mysticial so how did you little "trip" go?

@Krazer Still in progress. I interviewed at Google yesterday and a startup today.
I fly back to school on Monday and I have another interview in Chicago on Wednesday... helluva ride.

sounds like fun xD
do all of your interviews have NDAs?

12:19 AM
Only the Google one. The startup one had an implied one.

how did you think it went?

Interesting should I put it.
I have a pending offer at Apple. It seems that the manager that pulled me in is trying to steal me from Apple.
IOW, I have a good chance of getting an offer at Google.

Ah taht explains ;)

And I have to thank Stack Overflow for both of these.

@Mysticial xD nice. I hope you have enjoy the beanie.

12:25 AM
Both the engineering managers at Apple and Google who pulled me in found me from Stack Overflow.

Nice :)

Best part is that 3 of the 4 companies I'm looking at are within driving distance from home.

That's always good xD

@Krazer I'm not sure if it's an appropriate use of mod powers to convert @JonLin's answer to a comment here. It's true that he didn't completely answer the question, but if he thought that was a complete answer and it actually wasn't, it seems to me like it's better to leave your own answer and a comment on his answer and let him delete it if he wants.

Q: Who is Sasakura's father?

coleopteristIn the manga, Bartender, there have been a couple of oblique references to Sasakura Ryu's father being well known. Who is he?

It's not that he didn't completely answer the question, but rather he merely referenced that it has not been revealed in the in the recent scanlations. If the answer truly was that he has not been introduced yet, then it would be acceptable. I felt that the answerer could have done a bit more research before coming to his conclusion, it I believe it was more appropirate as a commen than an answer.

I guess for someone established like JonLin it's ok. But be a bit more lenient for newbies.

Alright, I'll keep that in mind.

12 hours later…
3:40 PM
@MadaraUchiha How come my answer text box turned gray here ? anime.stackexchange.com/questions/2532/…

@Dimitrimx What are you trying to do?
Where is it grayed?

These?

yes
how did they suddenly turn gray :o ?

That's a code block, it's because you have 4 spaces before it.
What were you trying to do?
Spoiler blocks?

3:43 PM
just normal > blocks :|

So remove the spaces and have one before every line.
Or just use the button in the toolbar after selecting the text

okay

Q: Shouldn't we have just one "retag" tag?

Deidara-senpaiThe manga-retag and anime-retag have been added to enable new users to request for a retag, but isn't a single retag sufficient?

5:56 PM
meeting starting in 4 min right ?

@Dimitrimx right

k good :) got the notice starting in ( insert giberish here)

hey

hey jnat

hello

5:58 PM
hi

Oh, look. A meeting.
... Maybe? xD

yes ;)
no @Mysticial or @MadaraUchiha yet ?

Doesn't appear that way. Hence "maybe"...

I'm here. Lurking as usual.

AHHHHH!
It's alive!

6:01 PM
:O!

All that's left is to summon Madara-sama. Who shall we use? xD

Super ping

@madarauchiha it's meeting time! XD

In any case, we're discussing the copyright stuff right?

Yeah, I think that was the main topic.

6:04 PM
And where we draw the line with fansubs in questions and answers.

and meta tags
yesterday, by Madara Uchiha
I don't think these are good tags at all.

I'll be a few minutes late
Start without me.

Ok
Let's start with meta tags.
I have one thing I want to bring up.
Fairly important.

@Mysticial speak up

6:06 PM
SE automatically appends tags to the title.
If anybody hasn't noticed yet.
If none of the tags are already in the title, it will take the most popular tag and add it to the title.
However...
This is great if there's only one tag. (the name of the show/series)

Like "android - Broadcastreciver triggered at Start - Stack Overflow", you mean?

@Eric yeah
But if we add an additional tag such as
It will append that to the title instead of the name of the show.
That is going to severely hurt SEO.
Search Engine Optimization
If you're gonna ask about X character, in Y show. You want both to be in the title.
You don't want the title to be like "Character Abilities - How can X destroy blah blah in 10 seconds."

Yeah, good point. "characters - Who was Archer? - Anime and Manga Beta - Stack Exchange" is not great.

exactly
I've been careful with tags for this reason. But I think now's a good opportunity to bring it up.

so there has to be some meta post about tagging

6:09 PM
I haven´t seen any tag get appended to a title before hmm

It's only in the title of the page.
(Which appears on search engines, of course.)

Right now, I only add meta tags if the name of the show is already in the title.

aha

@Dimitrimx Some examples if you're interested.

For example, here's a question that is not good for SEO:
2
Q: Why isn't Gildarts one of the Ten Wizard Saints?

BlueHe clearly is powerful. Makarov even said that Juro's (One of the 10 Wizard Saints) power was close to Gildarts, which means that Gildarts is more powerful than Juro. So why isn't he a wizard saint? Does he have to do something magnificent? Or is he just not popular enough?

Since the name can't easily be added to the title. I'd say get rid of the tag.
Which of course we lead to inconsistent use of these meta tags.

6:12 PM
It would be nice if moderators or the posters could pick the "main" tag.

@Mysticial so firstly we should debate about whether or not to keep meta tags

@Eric I've wanted such a feature for a while. My top answer on SO would benefit a lot from it actually. Since the key word is in a minor tag and is not in the title.
@JNat First, where do we draw the line between meta tags. Is a meta tag?

madara has brought up the issue of meta tags here

I'd say we do away with .

I think we should also discuss how we use new and current mata tags, esp for new users

6:14 PM
Along with .

I agree on that

Alright, I'm here

Me, too.

What have we begun on?

@Mysticial and
@MadaraUchiha meta tags

6:15 PM
As it is right now, meta tags are hurting our search engine visibility.

I dunno about character abilities

Since almost nobody is aware of the issue I brought up here.

@Mysticial Even more so, the twitter tweets (which also depend on the most popular tag)

I'm tempted to vote in favor or ridding of all meta tags for the sole reason of SEO.

then shouldnt the focus be more on easy to recognize tag´s ?

Alright then, since we agree that meta tags are harmful, which do we kill?

I'm a little unsure of though.

how do i post nice buttons like you do ;o

6:18 PM
No
@Dimitrimx [tag:tag-name]

thanks

I believe is a decent tag

is a hard one. It's definitely a directly applicable category, but it is somewhat meta.

The only way I'd want to allow meta tags is if we make it clear that the name of the show needs to be in the title. (or we aggressively edit them in when appropriate)

Yet how often would be used. I dont think allot of questions will surround it

6:19 PM
In some cases, it's obvious enough since "Misaka" is so well recognized. (possibility more so than the name of the shows themselves)

I think we should hold off on killing all meta tags, some should be gone but we can try to leave others for now if we mention the title rules

Actually, Dimitri is right. Probably all posts relating to anime physics will have that in either the question or answer.
There's only two posts there now...

@Krazer I think that is a better approach too

I agree.
The most obvious ones should die
The rest should remain under watch to see if they spread too much

@MadaraUchiha those are which exactly?

6:21 PM
@MadaraUchiha , , ...?

@MadaraUchiha ok

Those three go first

In in favor of getting rid of those.

6:22 PM
What about ?

@Eric that too

i say remove .

Probably too

Yup. I'm in favor, then, all those 4.

Same

6:22 PM
Same

I'll take care of these, if we are in agreement.

While I think they are useful, they're too inconsistently used and it hurts SEO too much.

Alright then

As for the rest, there should be some guidelines for tagging, and we keep a watchful eye for those that hurt the search engine visibility

Final call, any objections?

6:24 PM
We have an agreement then, we will burn , , and
4

Burn away.

burn it

I shall burnicate them now.

@Krazer IIRC you need to speak with the community team to do it properly, see if there's any of them on TL

mods can't burn tags?
I thought they only can't blacklist.

6:25 PM
@Mysticial No, sadly.
A note, don't forget to star helpful messages
2

@MadaraUchiha I'll get on that.

Interesting though. The SO mods seem to be able to eliminate tags just like that.

They are kept in the bookmark, and display a helpful summery of the conversation

And in the meantime, now that we all know the tag appending works with SEO, we should just manually fix anything that needs to be fixed.
Our traffic is small enough for this to be manageable.

@Mysticial Hmmm, you mean manually adding tags to the title?
"naruto - Question here?"

6:27 PM
@MadaraUchiha Not to every one. By evaluate on a case-by-case basis.

I think he means more like "What is ______ in Naruto?"

Alright then

So either remove unnecessary tags or somehow add the keywords to the title.
@Eric Yeah, pretty much.
@Eric Of course that's not necessary right now since is the biggest tag.

@Mysticial Indeed. Was just running with Madara's example.

Bookmark ends here. Let's move on.

6:30 PM
For each question ask yourself the following questions:
1. What would I be searching for to end up here?
2. What search terms should bring me here?
And if it needs to be edited, by all means do so.

Don't be afraid to edit and suggest edits, worse case we can always reject/rollback/improve

@MadaraUchiha FB/G+ contents? or do you have something else in mind?

@JNat Alright, begin

Somebody ask the meta question about meta tags. I'll answer with a summary.

@MadaraUchiha we should do one of these at each time, so that our attention is more focused
but basically, we need to improve contents in our Facebook and Google+ pages
both to get more followers and more interested passer-bys

6:34 PM
OK, any ideas?

First, I think we need more activity in the G+ account. Last message was 8 days ago.

@Eric so far, the pages have not had any content updates, other than the pokemon question

Correct.

I just made it on. Sorry for being late.

@MadaraUchiha firstly, anyone here that has facebook/goole+ should follow us there

6:36 PM
I think we should nominate a manager for the FB and G+ pages.

@MadaraUchiha that's a good idea

Someone with a bit more free time than us (me?), who's well versed in a lot of anime, and is capable of posting interesting stuff

@MadaraUchiha also someone that can easily use these sites (I'm new in both)

@Mysticial No, they ask the comm team for burnination. Or they put up a meta post and crowdsource the power of meta to manually burninate

@Manishearth ah that's good to know

6:37 PM
I have free time, I'm just limited to only a few anime in experience. But I'm very active on G+ (I pretty much spend 1-2 hours a day on there, browsing interesting things).

@MadaraUchiha a note: if you're running an FB/G+ page, be sure to make it visibly unofficial

@Manishearth We know, we've been there already :)

ah good

@MadaraUchiha maybe we should make a meta post asking for nominations on this, and then discuss it on our next meeting

How do you spread on social media right now ? just posting messages look at this question know the answer come here ?

6:39 PM
@Dimitrimx We currently don't have a very developed social spread.

@MadaraUchiha An idea: why don't you guys start a community project? Many sites are doing it (for example, Raspberry Pi has some of its community members collaborating and writing something-or-the-other). You guys have a rather active chat, utilize that :) For example, collaborate and make some anime. Or something :)
2

Twitter could be a good potentional. Loads of people ask questions about anime as a tweet. Maybe refer people to a page that answers the question they asked ?

@Dimitrimx we cannot manage our twitter account
right @MadaraUchiha?

@JNat We can start an unofficial one though

6:42 PM
@MadaraUchiha and have it linked to the official one, ok

@JNat you can actually, later on. Gaming does it. You need to request it and show that you have enough members dedicated to keeping it alive.

one of the many sample's

@MadaraUchiha unofficial-all-the-things.gif

@Manishearth That idea could work, but making an anime or even a manga requires skills not many of us have.

@MadaraUchiha true
that particular one was just an idea

6:43 PM
One community we haven't tapped is deviantArt. But I don't even know how we'd tackle that.

scanlations is another one (dunno how legal that is)

I have it noted, however. We'll discuss it later (or in the next chat cast)
@Eric What do we have in common with them?

Ping me when we get onto the topic of copyright.

@MadaraUchiha Little in terms of content, but obviously a lot of anime fanatics will hang out there.

@Mysticial ok

6:45 PM
I'm currently typing up the meta tag SEO summary. So I won't be looking here.

@Eric Be ...careful when "tackling" communities.. You may end up lowering the quality of your site in favor of quantity. Reddit can be...dangerous at times
But a small nudge never hurt

@Manishearth Agreed. But not all communities are created equal, after all. :)

shouldn't we first focus on the pages we already have first?

Yes, we should

@JNat yep

6:48 PM
@JNat Yes. It was probably a little off-topic of me.

@MadaraUchiha AnnaLear recommended we post a meta before they actually take action so I made one outlining most of what we discussed.

ok, so about the managers, how do we choose/elect them?

@Krazer OK
@JNat I say a featured meta-post
Much like the pro-temp nominations

@MadaraUchiha I agree

6:49 PM
I'd agree on that

Agreed also.

and then we choose and debate it next session?

Yes

or do we simply let the voting talk?

@Manishearth If you think Reddit may be scary, you'd love to know that we have 4chan as a possibility too. :P

6:51 PM
We should at least debate how we plan to manage theses sites

A discussion would not hurt, so I'd have no problem doing that in addition to considering the vote count of each nomination.

Yes
Our model should be this, interesting questions should be posted here and there
But much more importantly is the stuff that'll catch the eye of people
Interesting stuff, anime/manga news, releases, funny stuff
Something people would want to follow.

@MadaraUchiha like eating Pokemon xD

@MadaraUchiha yes, that is more important

@MadaraUchiha Emphasis on "funny stuff". This is the internet, after all.

6:53 PM
Exactly like eating Pokemon.

@Mysticial runs away

Funny/shocking stuff attracts the most people.

@Dimitrimx but not too shocking

@Krazer has to stay Q/A not a horror show :)

Everything in measure. The Stack Exchange policy is that users should be 13+

6:54 PM
@Eric The problem is that we have maybe a dozen posts that are funny. We'd run out quickly if we only post those.

@Dimitrimx too shocking and it attracts even more people, except they don't know that they're being attracted (think goatse)

@MadaraUchiha 13+ for stack but anime/manga attracts people under that age aswel.

@LoganM That's right. Not only those, of course, but the Pokemon question caught quite a few eyes.

@LoganM currently we need to hook as many as we can so ppl at least know we are out there

And there will be more funny questions. I still see funny questions come up on SO now and then. (Uncatchable ChuckNorrisException was my favorite, I think.)

6:57 PM
@Dimitrimx If they lie about their age to use the site, that isn't our problem. But anyway, FB and G+ are both 13+ too IIRC.

We cannot force people to join us.
But we need to make people aware of our existance

Reddit and 4chan is a great place to make people are aware of our existence. :P

@MadaraUchiha Not just that, though. We don't want to appear as a community of stiffs that don't have any humor or fun at all. People wouldn't want to join that.
2

maybe poke ourselfs into a Yahoo question ?

@Mysticial Indeed, but we need to be careful with who do we attract.

6:58 PM
@MadaraUchiha Hence the ":P".
Uh... I didn't realize Krazer already made the meta post.
Can someone merge mine into it?
Or the other way, doesn't matter.
