4 hours later…
5:38 PM
@EliahKagan I intended to look for IPython questions that need attention while taking breaks from the work I was doing today, but I was enjoyably distracted by other chats and I took few enough breaks that, happily, I unexpectedly finished my work!
But since I was stuck in that unsupportive chair all day (it's all form over function in this house) my back is hurting so I turned off my laptop
So I will look for those questions another time
I did take a glance though
And it looked like the number of unanswered questions with that tag have reduced dramatically in recent days

Cool!
I'm sorry your back is hurting though.

It will be fine. I have moved to a comfortable chair. Our house is not set up for working at all

Ah, cool.
The first part I mean. :)
I take it you're on your phone now?

In contrast, the first pieces of furniture I bought for my flat in Chennai were stools to work on the floor and reach high shelves and then a desk and chair. Even the bed came after
@EliahKagan yes :)

I asked since, if so since you are, I would guess you don't want to do anything with Python or Git at the moment.

5:49 PM
I suppose not, but I must do something about my recipes repo soon.

Do something about it in what sense?
What needs to be done?

Make a remote version

Oh.
You could just put that on GitHub.
You can use a private repo if you want.
This does not prevent you from using a different remote in the future.
You can even have multiple remotes set up at the same time.

@EliahKagan yes I will do that
Actually I'm a bit confused

Have you made an empty repo on GitHub before? Like, without even a README?
If you do that, GitHub shows instructions, including specific commands, for setting it up as a remote for a local repo and pushing to it

6:05 PM
I haven't got my laptop here, but my recipes directory is in my Dropbox

Okay.
Is that unexpected?

So, if I install Dropbox on my system here, I can work on it, I think

So what's the confusing part?

What I'm confused about is whether Git's magic will work hahaha
I guess there's nothing magic about it

Also, why would you have to install Dropbox? You can also access the files on it through the web-based interface, right?

6:07 PM
Yes, yes
That's what got me confused

@Zanna Is the .git directory and its contents synchronized via Dropbox?
If so, that's your whole repository, including all commits in all branches (that existed locally).

Today I added some files to it through the web interface

Through the Dropbox web interface?

Later I realized that those files are contracted by Git...

As far as Git is concerned, those are just untracked files.

6:08 PM
@EliahKagan yes

Contracted by Git?
Did files with those names in those locations exist already?

I wrote untracked, but my phone changed it to contracted
@EliahKagan no they are completely new files I created on my system here

@Zanna Ah.
@Zanna Yeah, that's no problem. They'll just be untracked.
If you want them on the branch that's currently checked out then you can just stage and commit them.

Sorry for the confusing mistakes. I am feeling a bit euphoric and light-headed due to working too hard (hahaha I have a very low capacity for work) and finishing my work

If you want them on another branch you can usually just check that other branch out and do it. (If they don't conflict with anything, the untracked files can remain across a checkout.)

6:12 PM
@EliahKagan ok, so nothing to worry about.

Depending on the kind and extent of the changes, you might decide to stage and commit them all at once or as multiple commits.

I was confused because I realised I can't do anything with Git through the Dropbox web interface, but I felt I ought to be doing something with those files

I'm not sure if you can do anything with Git through the Dropbo web interface or not, but you probably shouldn't. :)

Hahaha yes

(It is possible to edit files in a .git directory manually.)

6:16 PM
I have even more files to add but I think it will make sense to add all of them in a single commit

You might want to install Dropbox. Since then you can sync the changes. Every commit makes changes inside .git. You probably don't want to wrangle that manually in the web interface.
One thing to be mindful of is that when you're using git on another computer, the parts of the configuration that are systemwide or per-user (rather than per-repository) may be different.

@EliahKagan Definitely not. But I could just wait until I get back next week

Like, you'll have to tell git your name and email address again, unless you stored those in the per-repo config (in which case they're in the .git directory synced to Dropbox).

@EliahKagan aha

@Zanna You could, but that sounds simpler and less fun.

6:19 PM
That might be helpful for learning
@EliahKagan indeed :D
