@Zanna I've been away from the site for a few days except for short(ish) bursts of reviewing, but I think it's time I finish writing that Q&A. Do you want to see the most recent draft? I do not like it very much and I might throw out most of the changes since you last saw it, so I'd be interested in your input.
It would be easier for you to give input if I kept working on the section I might totally throw out. But since I might totally throw that section out... :)

For years, Ubuntu has [shipped a patched version of `sudo` that preserves `$HOME` by default][1]. Besides Ubuntu and its derivatives, [very few other operating systems (perhaps no others) do this][2]. It has been [**decided that this causes more problems than it solves**][3], and [starting in Ubuntu 19.10][4], `$HOME` is no longer one of the few environment variables `sudo` preserves.

I don't know how valuable the detailed rundown of the history is.
Normally I don't explain changes to Ubuntu in ways that include that level of detail.
I'm just not sure the historical behavior will really make sense without those details.
