@Zanna Yeah, root has special powers.
@Zanna Well, I think that's to protect root. Aside from setuid executables, execute permissions on non-directories are really more to protect the users whom they constrain than to protect other users or the system from those users.

@Zanna I've commented.

66 messages moved from Raiders of the Lost Downboat‌
@karel I take it the system automatically invited you back to this room, as a result of me having moved messages here (which included at least one of yours)?

Uh-huh. there's a lot to catch up on as long as I'm here though.

Well, sorry to bother you. I suppose it's best that people are notified when their messages are moved, though, in case the move is in error or whatnot.
@karel Sorry, I just noticed your edit. Feel free to hang around, to reply, etc., as always. Btw, I've posted some messages in the Downboat, in case you're interested in casting any close or reopen votes or critiquing/disagreeing with any of what I've suggested.

That's what I'm reading right now.

@EliahKagan awesome! I love the part where it reminds you to type exit when you are done. Maybe other ways of starting a root shell should do that XD

@Zanna If you want that in general, you could put it at the end of /root/.bashrc.

:)

It seems not everyone likes it. :)
I think I can understand that, though. I'm assuming the downvote expresses that the method is not worth using, rather than a flaw in the code or presentation that I am unaware of (or, if the latter, that they'll comment).

8:16 AM
The downvote expresses my fingers being fat O.O
worries about how often that might happen I noticed because I got +8 instead of +10 and thought "didn't I only downvote one answer this morning?" But what if I accidentally downvote questions that I intend to upvote or vice versa? Sorry about that!

Ha! No problem. It wasn't really necessary to re-edit though (though the small punctuation edit did slightly help the post). You could've waited for me to eventually edit it for unrelated reasons. :)
@Zanna Are you sure it doesn't express that Tim Post lost his keys? :)
Interestingly... I don't seem to always get notifications when my posts are edited. Is that normal? For example, neither of your edits on that answer notified me. I don't just mean that I didn't get a red icon, but also that there's nothing for them in my SE inbox. I would've figured that the first edit, which changed code (thanks for fixing that typo btw!), would have notified me.

@EliahKagan it's definitely a case of TPLHK
@EliahKagan I would have thought so, too. I am still trying to work out exactly when an edit causes a notification

Is that to say you've experienced mysteriously absent notifications when others edit your posts, too?
Is this current?

A: Notify us when one of our posts is edited

animusonWith the new notifications section in the global inbox, this is now done for substantive edits to your post and for any pending suggested edits to your post. When an edit is made to your post: When the edit applies to code: When an edit is suggested on your post:

A: No notification was received for an edit to a post

SklivvzIn order to reduce noise sent to users, we only notify when "substantive" changes are happening on their posts. There are a few rules in how "substantive" is defined, but typically one of the following should be enough to trigger a message: edit to a question title the edit in the post body sh...

If so, that seems to explain it.

Yes I find that I sometimes get notified and sometimes do not. Thanks for the links!

I think it would be better if we got notified of every edit
I don't envision my inbox being swamped with notifications of minor edits...

@Zanna I agree. I think it also sends kind of a bad message, that comments on a user's post always notify, but edits don't. Edits change the content of posts, which are what the site is all about.

true :)
