@tim - nope. sippenhaft is punishing someone. There's a marked difference - both ethically and practically - between punishment and lack of reward. You don't get punished because I refuse to post a 500 rep bounty on your answer - or even to upvote it. (a downvote is a punishment, lack of upvote is not) — user4012 55 mins ago

@yannis what I've the impression that happens, is that downvotes tend to invite upvotes from people of the same "faction" as the poster. Netting a benefit rather than a punishment.

Nothing wrong with your comment there, just that if you already know the other party aren't going to be receptive to criticism, no point in risking yet another pointless comment fight.

And yes, it's sad how many times that initial -1 prompts sympathy upvotes.
