@MartinEnder So I know I'm way behind on this, but Ori is amazing.
The more I play it, the more it reminds me of Hollow Knight
I'm greatly enjoying it
I particularly like how both Ori and HK use a very similar map system. Everywhere you've been is revealed, until you find a certain pickup and then the rest of that area is revealed

5 hours later…
6:42 AM
@DJMcMayhem it is! Can't wait for the sequel.

6:52 AM
I think Ori must have been the first metroidvania I played (not counting La-Mulana where I didn't get very far before giving up).

7:07 AM
Hmmm, Axiom Verge 2 announced. The trailer makes it look a lot better than the original.

9 hours later…
4:16 PM
@MartinEnder Which do you prefer between Ori and ESA?

ESA
Definitely my second favourite metroidvania.

ESA?

It's the only one that gets many of the things right that make Hollow Knight my favourite MV.
Environmental Station Alpha

@MartinEnder Behind Axiom Verge, right? :P

4:20 PM
I think I'm enjoying Ori more than ESA

@AdmBorkBork European Speedster Assembly

It's a really fun game (and the art and soundtrack obviously make it much more easily likeable), but ultimately it's pretty linear for an MV and the combat might as well not exist. (It's got pretty much the best platforming in any MV I've played though.)

@Veskah searching for "ESA game" is an exercise in futility

@MartinEnder Yeah, it is pretty linear I suppose

The trailer(s?) for Ori 2 suggest that it's going to have actual combat though.

4:24 PM
I should really give Ori another go. I stopped playing it maybe an hour or two in because the gameplay didn't hook me.

I'm pretty sure Ori is one of only two or three games that made... my eyes sweat.

I'm not crying, I'm just allergic to the pixels!
@AdmBorkBork I'm not much further than that

@DJMcMayhem Guacamelee and Ori are kinda similar in that regard. They're fantastic games, but just a bit too short and linear for me to consider them top-tier metroidvanias.

@MartinEnder Half-Life 2: Episode 2 for me. It still gets me, even though I know what's coming.

@MartinEnder I don't really know how to describe this, but guacamelee never really felt like a metroidvania. It felt like a collection of levels
Not to say I didn't enjoy it of course
@AdmBorkBork I cried like a baby at the end of Telltale's The Walking Dead, and then again in season 2

4:29 PM
Never played a Telltale game.

They're alright

You only really need TWD s1 and 2 and Wolf Among Us. Everything else is eh at best
Actually, I hear Tales from the Borderlands is also alright

I have Wolf Among Us, via a Humble Bundle, I think, but never even installed it.

[Glass him]

The only other game I can think of that I teared up at was Oneshot which I highly recommend if you enjoyed undertale

4:31 PM
... I didn't. :D
At least not as much as most people seem to, and not enough to finish it.

@DJMcMayhem I actually teared up watching a GDQ of Undertale the other year where they did a full pacifist run.

End of MGS3 almost got me.

Oh, and midway through The Last of Us (if you've played it, you'll know the scene, but I won't spoil it).

I have played it, but I'm not sure I know which scene

Man, the climax of TLoU bugs the hell out of me

4:35 PM
@DJMcMayhem With the guy and his brother.
@Veskah Why so? I thought it was tremendously well done.

I vaguely remember that

I could've gotten that to compile had I wrapped in quotes

> The term 'Forcing' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program.
lol
@Veskah Really? I never got that impression of Joel.
Huh.
Still, super hyped for the sequel coming next year.

I'm gonna have to agree with Veskah here :P
Like, I think it was well done, and interesting, but it felt really weird too

I don't think I've ever cried/teared up for a game (or in general for movies/etc) but I definitely appreciate the somber feel of Halo: Reach.

4:48 PM
I thoroughly enjoyed Reach. Like, I knew what was going to happen at the end of the game (because, spoiler, it's a prequel), but I still felt the whole way through that I was having an impact and making decisions, even though it's a totally linear game.

I think the other games for me (other than Ori) were GRIS and Bastion.

I've heard good things about both of those, but haven't delved into either. (goes and plays another round of Overwatch.)

@MartinEnder I've heard incredible things about GRIS

It is incredible.

4 hours later…
8:44 PM
Steam award nominees are out
How is Total War Three Kingdoms nominated for Outstanding Visual Style but Disco Elysium isn't.
Oh wait they've only revealed one category.
GRIS is nominated though, so I know what I'll be voting for :D

I've never even heard of Katana ZERO, but it looks amazing

9:04 PM
I played it, it's pretty great.
Apart from having great core mechanics, it's got the most interesting dialogue system I've seen ... ever? I think.

@MartinEnder Do you do anything other than play games and work on your game? :P

Occasionally he listens to game soundtracks ...

@El'endiaStarman eat, (actually) work and sleep I guess?
@AdmBorkBork oh yeah, but I can do that in parallel to any of the other things

2 hours later…
11:17 PM
King Knight's core movement mechanic has so much depth it's ridiculous. Essentially he gets a (potentially mid-air) dash, but if he bumps into something on the way, he bumps up slightly (meaning you can use it to climb ledges) and starts spinning. While spinning you can also stomp on enemies and breakable blocks which will keep your spin (and the bounce from spinning on things is fairly high). It's a single button and it does all the things.
And of course then they have walls you can't bash into (i.e. you just bonk off them, and don't start spinning or gain height) and there are floors you can't jump from and there are trampolines that will send you spinning without a bash etc. I think I'm at most 1/3 into the game and I'm pretty sure it's going to be my favourite in the series by far.
