@DJMcMayhem Not sure this is what I'd call 2nd person, but that mission was a really fascinating concept.

6 hours later…
2:31 PM
Needs more 4th person games
Also, I'm pretty sure Lifeline qualifies the best as a 2nd person game.

2:53 PM
Wouldn't a lot of text adventure games fall under 2nd-person perspective?

Yeah

4:03 PM
Yeah, he does give choose-your-own-adventure books as an example of 2nd-person narration, and text adventures are pretty much the same thing.

4:46 PM
@MartinEnder Yeah, it's not exactly the same, but I think that's because it can't really be. Like, the idea of forcing a grammar concept to also apply to a camera explanation isn't always possible
It works great for 1st/3rd, but 2nd would have to be a text adventure

I've sort of always felt that what we call 1st person in games is actually second person.

@SriotchilismO'Zaic Because you're still getting narrated a story where you then make (sometimes minimal, sometimes impactful) decisions?

Nah, because you are the one doing the action, not the narrator.
Video games put me in the eyes of the character just like second person story telling puts me in the eyes of a character.

Speaking of video games, Sony (rather quietly) announced the PlayStation 5, alongside terse specifications of the new (allegedly-named) DualShock 5 controller. Any thoughts?

It most likely will be the 5th Playstation

6:28 PM
@AdmBorkBork the few pieces of rumour I read about the DS5 sounded pretty cool. But I don't think I'll be getting another non-Nintendo console any time soon. (There really aren't enough permanent PlayStation exclusives that I absolutely need to play, and I've never been interested in getting an Xbox.)
I've had a PS4 for three years... I've played maybe three or four games on it, and Horizon Zero Dawn is the only exclusive among them (tbf, I'd really regret not being able to play this one, but one game isn't really worth getting a console for).
The other exclusive I'd really like to play is God of War, but I've been thinking that since the original God of War and still haven't played a single game in the series...
(I've also bought PS2 and PS3, but I haven't used the PS2 in eight years and I sold the PS3 to a friend last year after also only playing maybe 5 or 6 games on it.)

Funny, I picked up a PS3 exclusively to play The Last of Us and wound up grabbing the Uncharted series, too. The only game I have for my PS4 is Uncharted 4 (until February, when The Last of Us Part II is released).

Uncharted was one of the series I picked up the PS3 for, but like God of War, never actually played any of it.
I guess there's The Last Guardian for PS4, but I don't think I'll actually ever end up playing that either.
Though if the PS5 actually does end up being backwards compatible, I might consider selling my PS4 to get a PS5 (provided it gets any exclusives that I really want, but I suppose HZD2 is on the table).

@MartinEnder That's a shame. They're really good.

Hmmm, it's possible to play the entire GoW series through PSNow... I might have to look into that.

6:44 PM
That's the Sony streaming service, right? I wonder how the latency is on that.

Is that the streaming service thing? I feel like the input lag might feel like ass considering GoW has pretty tight controls

ninja'd

Heck :'DDDDD

Yeah, no clue how bad the lag would be.

9:27 PM
@NathanMerrill What language(s) do you use with godot?
I'm seeing that it supports a variety

9:47 PM
@DJMcMayhem gdscript
Primarily because it is the default language, and so you will always find the most resources on it
@DJMcMayhem I actually commented on this video: I think they got it totally wrong
2nd person gameplay is actually really common. It's what we typically call 3rd person game play
For example, when the character dies in Dark Souls, what text appears?
"You Died"
When you are looking at the character, and controlling the character, that character is "You". That is 2nd person game play.
3rd person gameplay is when there are characters that you don't personify. Like units in a Civ game.

@NathanMerrill Can you create bindings so that you can call C++ classes or functions in gdscript?
@NathanMerrill That's a good perspective

C++ can expose a function to GDScript pretty easily
but you don't go the other way, you can't call any function in GDScript
In fact, that's largely what my C++ plugin code I wrote does. It takes an existing library, converts it into Godot-friendly objects, and exposes that to GDScript
(And by exposing it to GDScript, you also expose it to all other languages)

Recently I've been playing around with QML for game dev. Pros: I already understand QML very well, because I use it all the time. Cons: I have no idea what should be implemented in QML vs what should be implemented in C++
QML is fantastic for layouts and menus etc., but it doesn't have much along the lines of sprites or cameras
At least that I'm familiar with

yeah, I don't know anything about QML, but at least for Godot, my rule of thumb is to do as little as possible in C++

QML is basically just JSON/JS/C++ callbacks

I'm loving these modded bosses

11:19 PM
Why are their health's linked?

that's part of the mod
to make sure it's difficult the entire time
