@MartinEnder But is it more worth your time than, say, Super Metroid?

3 hours later…
5:10 AM
@DJMcMayhem and now the optional content ;)
@Pavel I don't think Super Metroid has aged all that well (mostly the controls). It's a great and groundbreaking game but I don't find it as enjoyable as many modern MVs.

2:37 PM
Explains exactly what I think is so amazing about Hollow Knight's world design (using the most prominent example, but there's a lot more like that in the game). Also contains mid-game spoilers for the game though.

@MartinEnder Yeah, it'll be tough getting the stuff from early game that I need though :|
I've got all the berries from chapters 1 and 2, and the first super special secret thing

You don't need any strawberries to unlock content. They only affect the endings and your street cred.

I need my street cred though

And if the super special secret thing is the one you about which you asked for a hint then you also don't need that for now.

@MartinEnder Uhhh, yeah I do? Try it online!

2:47 PM
There are other kinds of levels to unlock first. I'd be surprised if you haven't unlocked a single one in the entire playthrough.

I've unlocked most of those, haven't played any (except for a bit of the first one, but it was ridiculously hard)

yeah those
hope you don't consider this a spoiler, but completing those will also help you unlock that other door

Oooh. Huh

if you want, I can also give you some hints where to look for the other kind of collectible in each level

@MartinEnder I think you're much more anti-spoiler than I am. I don't like story spoilers, but gameplay hints I don't mind as much

2:51 PM
and I think the bonus levels shouldn't seem quite so ridiculously hard any more after beating the main game

@MartinEnder I'll keep trying on my own for now, but I'll probably take you up on the later
I do remember finding birds in a later level (with the thwomps)

yeah :)

I think the mechanic that you used a joystick for is my least favorite mechanic in the game, followed by wind.

Y'all are making me want to get Celeste and try it out. I'm not even halfway with Baba Is You yet...

@El'endiaStarman Do you have epic games store? It was free last week

2:55 PM
Nope. I've been eschewing Epic. :P

@DJMcMayhem I think the only thing I dislike about it is having to switch to the joystick. My least favourite mechanic you haven't seen yet :D ... but also not my favourite mechanic so there's that ;)
Btw, if you liked that one fourth-wall break you mentioned early on, I highly recommend Chapter 5's B-side just for the dialogue :D

@El'endiaStarman I don't think I'm a fan of super hard platformers in general (although it's not quite as hard as super meat boy yet), but the art and music is absolutely gorgeous, and incredibly relaxing. The gameplay/controls are super tight and well refined, I really like the characters and story, and it's brings out the completionist in me. I just "beat" the game, and I've probably seen less than half of it
So I definitely recommend it
@MartinEnder Is it this one?

not sure whether you mean favourite or least favourite, but it's neither.

I could see why those might be considered annoying, but I also think that's a really clever twist
I was wondering if that was your least

3:00 PM
oh no, I also think it's an interesting twist on the game's core mechanic.

Just looked it up, I have every B-side but chapter 4

that's pretty good!

@DJMcMayhem I like the wind mentally. It makes for some really interesting puzzles. I just wish it wasn't so incredibly hard to platform with

A room in the latest content update also combines it very cleverly with a mechanic from a different chapter.

@DJMcMayhem Actually, that's a common pattern I've noticed. I'm not a completionist, but every now and then I play game that's me go "I have to see absolutely everything this game has" and I obsess over it and play it like a completionist. Terraria, hollow knight, dead cells, and a lot of Mario games do that to me
Although I'm pretty sure I'll never 112% Hollow Knight lol
Celeste is really nailing that feeling for me right now

4 hours later…
7:11 PM
@DJMcMayhem Mario fits all the challenge in after the end
It's like the main game is a training exercise for the really fun bits

I 100%'ed New Super Mario Bros (The OG for DS) and New Super Mario Bros Wii

I've done all the NSMBs and also Galaxy 2

@Pavel Celeste is a lot like this too.

Galaxy 2 was so good. I didn't 100% it, but I did enjoy it a lot

Except Celeste is already actually hard

7:20 PM
I loved Galaxy 1 but didn't really get into 2

@DJMcMayhem I liked the first one more. The second one had better mechanics and all, but the story and theme of the first one in my mind totally makes up for it and I enjoy it so much more.

I never played Galaxy 1, so I wouldn't know

@Pavel I don't know. I mean sure it's harder than your average Mario game but you get a checkpoint every 20 seconds of successful gameplay.

I think Super Mario World for the SNES was the last time I played a Super Mario game.

And the controls are much tighter than Mario's
Btw @DJMcMayhem are you aware of the special strawberry in Chapter 1?

7:22 PM
@MartinEnder Agreed. It's definitely not an easy game, but no individual section took very long other than 2-3 sections, usually during a boss fight

@MartinEnder I guess that's because I haven't tried playing in a way that doesn't involve getting all the berries

Especially if you're not going for all the berries
@Pavel Even getting the berries is easier than star coins in a way. To get a star coin you have to get it and then survive the whole level. Strawberries are instantly counted once you get to safety, which I appreciate so much
(In a way, strawberries are still harder overall)

Come to think of it, other than NSMB and the new Donkey Kong Countries, I don't know of any platformer with more time between checkpoints

@MartinEnder No I'm not. What exactly do you mean?
I've gotten all 20

Oh nevermind, it doesn't unlock until much later in the game. I thought it unlocked after beating the chapter once.

7:25 PM
huh
@Pavel Oh man, nostalgia. I loved Donkey Kong Country for Wii years ago

@DJMcMayhem Tropical Freeze is out on switch

Tropical Freeze was great

I literally suspended out of it to have this conversation, calling it nostalgia feels so weird to me

Especially on my second playthrough when I no longer wanted it to be DKC4.

I'm too young for the OG DKCs
Never played any of them

7:27 PM
(I still want my Kremlins back)

I probably last played that game like... idk 7 years ago probably?

I literally typed 'kremlin' into my search bar just now and was greeted by what you might expect in the results :/

Did anyone else here ever play De Blob? That was awesome

yeah there's a g that got lost somewhere lol

7:29 PM
Sorry for the typo

@DJMcMayhem I got it off the discord nitro free games thingamajig

I didn't even know it was on PC O_O

Well the PC port is shite

@Pavel you should try them and tell me how well they've aged :D (especially DKC2)

@MartinEnder What system are they even for?

7:30 PM
I really hope they'll add them to the SNES games on the switch

SNES

Wow, SNES? I thought they had better graphics than that.

They had prerendered 2.5D
Pretty groundbreaking at the time

7:32 PM
Well sure I can check them out later

And also the reason Yoshi's Island ended up with that amazing crayon style. It was supposed to be prerendered 2.5D too but then DKC came out and they didn't want it to look the same.

Today I have an exam and a five hour drive though

Oof™

I drive home every weekend so I can catch up on sleep

DKC is one of the greatest games ever

DKC2 is also great. DKC3 is just good.

11:30 PM
DKC2 > DKC > DKC3
