tl;dr 90% DR is better than 90% evade (90% chance to take 0 damage) in the average case with a 1HK (10 hits with 90% DR), but evade has a ton of variance

2:08 AM
If you're defining "better" as "more expected rounds until death", they're equivalent

Anonymous
@EricTressler In terms of EV, yes. But the high variance of the evade option makes DR more appealing for the consistency.

I would probably agree, but what about the enemy I just made up that's immune for the first 10 rounds

Anonymous
If it's immune for the first 10 rounds, you're probably going to die anyway, unless it has hilariously low HP compared to your damage output (or some other condition like it dies at the end of round 10, like that one enemy in StS)

ok, so you have a trolley and 2 track segments, and the people tied to track segment 1 have 90% EV, but...

@Pavel Sold a foil for 80c yesterday. Boom shaka

@Feeds Had no idea this was a feed :O

Yep, I just added a couple feeds recently

@DJMcMayhem Can we also get Extra Credits
Also how did you get two of the only three channel's of subscribed to in the past, like, year

4:16 PM
Wooo, Hollow Knight up next!

@MartinEnder In what?

Boss Keys
So I guess the next leg of the series will be modern indie MVs. Probably stuff like HK, Axiom Verge, Environmental Station Alpha, Ori, Guacamelee. I wonder what he's going to pick since there are so many these days.

4:37 PM
@Feeds This was a really good video, and nailed why MP3 was the worst game of the trilogy IMO: it repeatedly and systematically broke the basic storytelling rule of "show, don't tell"

Anonymous
Now to binge the entire channel

Haha, enjoy!

In general I get lost extremely easily in games that don't just give an objective marker and a path to get there, but yesterday I played through the entirety of firewatch and I think it has a good middle ground

Anonymous
Thankfully I took today off

You have a map with an objective marker, but you can't really walk with the map out and it doesn't show most of the trails you can use to navigate unless you copy them from sketches you find in supply caches, so you pull out your compass and start making your way in the general direction of where you need to go.

Anonymous
4:41 PM
@Pavel I think MP1 does it very well. At any point in the game, you have one clear path to follow to progress, a few side paths you can go down for optional upgrades, and a few blocked paths that tease you with stuff that you can't reach until later.

So you don't get completely lost but it still feels like you're discovering new places

@Pavel I turned the minimap off in BotW because I wanted to get that feeling

Anonymous
I wasn't a big fan of Metroid Fusion's linear narrative, nagging computer, and constant waypoints (though the actual gameplay was great).

In general Firewatch was a great experience, but given how short it was I'm not sure it was worth even 20$
By the time you get that feeling of, I know this place, here's how I can get through it, the game is over
I wonder how if you can make a Firewatch navigation system work in a metroidvania, where it's usually more about "Where do I go", not "How do I get there".

Anonymous
Metroid Zero Mission did that fairly well. For most of the game, you have a partial map, and waypoints pointing you toward your next major objective. However, it wasn't just simply going from waypoint to waypoint - you still had to explore and find the powerups that enabled you to get to the next waypoint.

Anonymous
4:49 PM
So you always knew where you were going to end up, but you had to explore to find the tools necessary to get there

I much prefer that to just having no idea where to go
MP1, like you mentioned, does in general give pretty good clues about where you need to come back later with what powerup, but I for me it only needs to fail at this one time for me to get to that point and just give up.

Anonymous
I like MP1's style of having the environment and obstacles direct you toward your goals, but I can appreciate the compromise that ZM made

Anonymous
It's a shame that there was a 10-year gap between Metroid games

Anonymous
And that the 10-year gap was after the release of MP3, which left a bad taste in a lot of mouths

You know what else is a shame?

4:59 PM
Speaking of Zero Mission, GBA emulation on Linux you don't get any option other than RetroArch, and RetroArch is hot garbage :/

I have never played a single metroid game

hey neither have I!

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem Fix that right now

wait, are we talking genre or brand?

Anonymous
@Pavel I like RetroArch well enough, but I only use it on Windows, and only for N64

Brand

I think I've played some of the very first one, while I was at someone else's house. Nintendo Hard™ though, so obviously I didn't get far.

Anonymous
Definitely not genre, because I know DJ has played a ton of HK :P

Oh yeah, like 100 hours
I also tried out axiom verge, but didn't really like it

Anonymous
HK is probably my favorite metroidvania game that's not a Metroid or Castlevania game

Anonymous
Axiom Verge was kinda neat, but it didn't hold my attention very well

5:01 PM
Does Dead Cells count as a metroidvania?

@Mego I'm guessing rebinding keys actually works properly on Windows, then

I'm not sure if you're trolling or not, lol

The character is Samus

5:02 PM
I'm not trolling. I literally know no lore :)

I spent an hour a few days ago trying to get GBA emulation with RetroArch, didn't get the select button to work

except for the scraps that people leave around the internet

Anonymous
Metroids are the raspberry jellyfish that like to be deadly hats

Anonymous
Samus is the main character, and is female

@NathanMerrill I don't want to laugh at you for not knowing the lore of a game you haven't played, but at the same time this message is the funniest thing I've seen all day

5:04 PM
I don't care :)

Oh boy I sure do like playing as my favorite green-hatted adventurer, Zelda

Anonymous
"SaMuS iS a GiRl?!?1" is a meme because, in the original Metroid game, you didn't learn she was a girl until the end credits, where she took off her helmet. Even the manual referred to Samus with male pronouns to keep the secret.

Anonymous
And then, as the games went on, they made it more and more obvious, sooner in the game

@Mego Samus is trans confirmed?

Anonymous
@Pavel No, Nintendo is just a bunch of trolls

Anonymous
5:06 PM
Samus being a girl is a slightly worse-kept secret than Sheik being Zelda

I should replay <every zelda game>

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem TBF, Zelda wears a blue dress and is really fast in Smash

If you can't trust the manual, then what is the source of truth for game lore?

@NathanMerrill Game Theory

@Mego Not to mention that Super Smash Bros Brawl had Samus's final smash transform her into Zero Suit Samus, where is very obvious that she's female.

I played a bunch and quickly gave up when I was in elementary and middle school and I like to think I'm probably smart enough to get through the first dungeon in a lot of them by now

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman Yep, and they even made ZSS an unlockable character in Brawl, 4, and Ultimate

@El'endiaStarman Doesn't sheik transform into Zelda in Brawl
Or in one of them

@Pavel You can go back and forth between them in Brawl, yeah.

5:08 PM
@El'endiaStarman That always annoyed me. Samus's ult is awesome, and then zero-suit's ult is just going back to samus mode

Separate characters in Ultimate though.

Anonymous
@Pavel You can switch back and forth in Brawl. Not sure about 4, but in Ultimate, Sheik and Zelda are separate

@Mego you're talking the youtube channel? Totally doesn't count.
What is canon in the video game world?

......did I ever mention that I got a Switch? Like, two or three months ago.

Overwatch did it much better with D.Va for example. Her ult is awesome, and then her ult charges up faster if she's out of the mech (Or as me and my wife call it, Baby D.Va mode)

Anonymous
5:09 PM
@DJMcMayhem If you have a Switch and Nintendo Online, Super Metroid is on SNES on Switch, and is an excellent starting point :P

Only the text in the game?

@El'endiaStarman Nice

Anonymous
@NathanMerrill Yeah, naturally. The manual doesn't exist in the game (except for games that break the 4th wall, which is 0 of the Metroid games)

So, I'm assuming the original game never refers to Samus using him/her in the text

Anonymous
@NathanMerrill What text?

5:11 PM
@Mego I'm a little bit worried to go back and play classics like Metroid or most Zelda games (or almost anything by Nintendo). I'm afraid that I'll be spoiled by playing newer games and not enjoy them

oh, there's no text? So, what's stopping Samus from being a long-haired male?

Anonymous
There is no text in the original game, other than stating the name of the item that you just picked up

Anonymous
And "METROID", "START GAME" on the tital screen

@DJMcMayhem That happened to me with Sonic 1. No ability to spin-dash (introduced in Sonic 2) == UNPLAYABLE.

Anonymous
5:12 PM
@NathanMerrill The fact that she's also wearing a one-piece swimsuit with the JUSTIN BAILEY code, and is noticeably female

Anonymous
My recommended playing order for Metroid games is Zero Mission, the Prime trilogy, AM2R or Samus Returns, Super Metroid, and Metroid Fusion

Right, but that's no longer text. That's what I'm getting at. That's based on looks, which is far more vague. And in the case of Metroid 1, misleading

Anonymous
That's the actual canon order of the 4 main sequence games and the 3 Prime games. Metroid Prime: Hunters is skippable, Metroid and Metroid 2 don't stand up to time and their remakes are significantly better, and there are no other Metroid games.

GMTK made a video on AM2R vs Samus Returns and why Metroid 2 is still worth playing despite those two existing

@NathanMerrill Is design/aesthetic not valid for determining lore? Mario isn't canonically called a man in the original game text I don't think
Or any of the Slay the Spire characters

5:17 PM
@DJMcMayhem I don't know. On one hand, that's a huge amount of information you are just ignoring. On the other, it's vague and potentially misleading

Or sometimes characters are more androgynous

And as far as being "Canon", you don't want people making guesses when putting things as canon

Why can't Metroid crawl?

@NathanMerrill Would you consider word of the creators/designers canon?

yes. I know many people disagree with me on that point, but I do :)

5:21 PM
Mmm, telling authors they're wrong about their own characters.

I wouldn't be surprised in the case of Nintendo that they've clarified genders :)

Really? I feel like it would be hard to disagree with that
To clarify, it would be hard to disagree with considering the designers word canon

Think about Harry Potter and the many things that JK Rowling has said after she wrote the books

Oh sure. I was still just thinking about video games
Or even Fahrenheit 451 for that matter
Ray Bradbury: *It's a book about TVs making people stupid*
Everyone: *Nah, it's about censorship*

Anonymous
@Veskah The actual raspberry jellyfish? They don't crawl because they fly.

5:24 PM
(I know, let me wallow in my ancient memes)

Anonymous
If you're talking about Samus, she doesn't crawl in her armor because Morph(ing) Ball is always one of the first upgrades

Anonymous
But she does crawl as Zero Suit Samus in Zero Mission to get through morph ball tunnels

ZSS getting the worst nerf in Smash 5, a true tragedy

@DJMcMayhem My English teacher brought this up in class as her introduction to New Criticism literary analysis, which says context and the author's intent don't matter, only the actual words on the pages.

Yeah, it's something I've wondered about. On one hand, I feel like the author's intent is extremely valuable, and it's kinda presumptuous to claim you know what something is about more than the person who made it. On the other hand, if everybody interprets your work a certain way, you kinda failed to communicate something
And also who's to say media can't mean different things to different people?

5:29 PM
Author's intent means much less and do whatever. However, people trying to slip in character ships or sexuality, I think author has the final word
Granted, everyone looking for DEEPEST LORE in everything can really grate
Except for Rowling. She's desperately trying to stay relevant. Quit it, JK. Get off Twitter

> The author has the final say on sexuality
> Except for Rowling

I stand by my hypocrisy
2

The issue seems clear to me: "Canon" is basically a fancy word we use when we want to be factual when describing facts about the world. Because the author created the world, they absolutely have full rights over what is canon.

However, in terms of "meaning": this 100% depends on the audience. The author intent doesn't matter. Whatever you experienced/learned is 100% dependent on you and your personal interpetation
This is why Fahrenheit 451 is a book about censorship. Because censorship is not lore. It's what the audience is learning from the book.

When are they going to bring out the Kelvin edition of that book?

But also why JK Rowling can say whatever she wants about her world. You can imagine your own world with different sexualities, but that's no longer the original HP world

5:35 PM
@DJMcMayhem I always feel bad for how much I dislike this game :D

@NathanMerrill TBH, I generally try to avoid imagining Dumbledore's sexuality :P

oh so do I: The only time it ever comes up is when I discuss this sort of thing
like, I'm not that big into HP

It's hard to picture him naked. Because the beard getting in the way, mind you

The only thing that bothers me about HP is that people dying can be made essentially insignificant when you consider you can just make a painting of someone with their personality and memories intact

@NathanMerrill Same. Also, the Fantastic Beasts series is a mess
@Veskah Out of context quote of the day

5:40 PM
Even with context

( ',')b

Actually, worse with context

Yeah, context does not help.

@MartinEnder That makes me feel better
Also, I should really finish Guacamelee

:D ... like it's developed by one guy and he's clearly put a lot of effort into it, and many people seem to enjoy it, but every time it comes up I have this urge to just rant about all the things that didn't work for me. I don't even know why I care so much about it, I normally just forget about games I didn't like.

5:46 PM
Haha, that's very different than my experience. It was more like plays for an hour. "Meh" never thinks about it again

I did actually finish it

Unrelated note: I'm trying my hand at game development, and getting a character to follow my click was surprisingly exciting. Like, it's just a couple lines of code. I've written thousands of lines of code, but for some reason, this was way more fun.

Haha, nice! What are you using for that?

Godot
Open source, highly recommended when I read about it, and the script is pretty slick. Feels like python

@NathanMerrill Frankenstein effect.
I remember taking a class on intro OpenGL and hooboy, I haven't laughed that hard in awhile when the animation kicked in and everything went to hell

5:54 PM
@NathanMerrill What style are going for? (game/art/whatever)

I don't know theme. I've done a lot of back-and-forth. The game is a rogue-lite RTS (but with time control) and no unit control. The rogue elements come from the ability to select classes/races you want to join your army.
If you've ever played Majesty, that's the game I'm trying to replicate the most, but with randomized races

6:09 PM
@NathanMerrill nice. I've been thinking that I should give Godot a try for my next game project (if I ever finish this one...). It's a weird trade-off though, since I already know Unity quite well now, but it's architecture often annoys me a lot. So I'd basically throw out the annoying stuff, hoping that Godot does them better and I'd have to learn a whole new engine for it. :/

I still think you'd be better at it than I :) I know nothing about game development, except for random SE excerpts I've read

I mean, I'm also just kinda winging it and am really unhappy with large parts of my architecture. I wish I had someone with actual game industry experience to learn from.
Unrelated note #2: You can now opt into the new steam library beta if you want to.

Anonymous
6:29 PM
@MartinEnder What does it involve?

Oooh, pretty
+1 from me
I have thought that Epic's library was much easier to navigate. It's hard to actually do anything besides run the game, but for finding a game to play, Epic definitely is better
This looks like economics at work!

I always enjoy looking at what games get "highlighted" by features such as this.

I should really improve the organisation of my steam library. So far I've only had "completed" and "played" categories (that weren't very well kept). Some genre categories and a "want to play" category might be helpful...

Isn't genre one of the built-in views?

6:35 PM
You can filter by genre, but it's not exactly the kind of genre categorisation that is useful to me.

You can...organize your Steam games?

I mean... you could...

@El'endiaStarman Right click a game in the menu, there's an option to set categories
Speaking of which, Beta steam library no longer puts games owned by someone else through library sharing in a separate category

7:00 PM
@Pavel TIL. I'mma go home and do nothing about it 'cause I'm already used to the alphabetical listing I've had for a decade. :P

I use the recent ordering

Alphabetical ordering is nice when you know what you're looking for. :D

I have Favorites, Multiplayer, Completed, and Backlog as my categories.
Then I look at my Backlog and go play game X for the hundredth time instead.

I used to have a bunch, then steam updates like a year ago and they all got deleted

oh damn
that's weird

7:05 PM
I spent hours categorizing by genre, series, completion status, good for parties, stuff like that
Just all gone

I probably have far fewer games than y'all. With not even a hundred games, the sidebar listing is really only like two pages long.

yeah... I have... a couple more than that.

<-- 396

I can't seem to get a count on the Steam app on my phone.

Yeah, I stopped buying games many years ago when I realized that I wasn't really playing them. I've bought some more since then but always with intent to play them sooner or later.

7:09 PM
@AdmBorkBork just open your profile

So is anyone going to play the modern warfare beta?

@MartinEnder ? Like via a webpage? Blocked at work.

no, within the app

ah derp
<-- 176

380, according to my profile, which is 385 entries in the list (presumably due to separate versions of a single game)

7:14 PM
Think I got 4 and change.

Got to have two copies of every call of duty
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare - Multiplayer
Both launch a main menu that lets you select campaign or multiplayer
Why

Man, I'm still mad at younger me for not playing more CoD1 and UO. I played it as it was dying out and had some mad fun

People hate on CoD a lot but I think it's just the general conception of 'everything popular is bad'
Not every game needs incredible depth and complexity, incredibly tight gunplay and some huge explosions are nice too

Eh, they got a bit Madden-y for a bit. Game comes out christmas, has 3 map packs, new one comes out next Xmas, repeat
I'm sad CoD:WW2 was shit.

But unlike Madden, each CoD does actually play distinctly
Absolutely loved Infinite Warfare

7:21 PM
True compared to Madden, Slightly less true on the whole. IW was a wildcard
Or was it AW that had the thrust packs?

That was kind of the thing that people got mad about that there were three games in a row with variatiouns on the jetback
AW, then Blops 3, then IW
I personally like flying around ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I will say however that mad props to the Audio Engineer for MW that picked the hitmarker sound of a generation

I recently was reading a thread on reddit about NVG in the modern warfare series
There were some army guys discussing how over time they went from wishing their NVG was that amazing to hoping they never have to go back to the old NVGs that look like the CoD games
Apparantly modern night vision goggles have full color with essentially no blurriness

Man, now I want to go find my old CoD1 disk and replay it. Gotta go hang out with Sgt. Moody and the boys

MW1 or actual CoD1?

7:28 PM
The latter

I should play some of the pre-MW games

1 and United Offensive are sweet and there's a reason the franchise grew to what it did. 2 was a beautiful game on release and still pretty good but was the harbinger of the modern era. 3 was 2 but back when Treyarch were kinda shitty devs (I think they might've still be Gray Matter Games)
Not to say modern era is bad or that 2 is bad. 2 was damn good fun and also featured the British in Egypt
Random aside, didn't know ProZD (chubby Asian YT dude who makes good videos) was the VA for FL4K in Blands 3

I still need to finish bl1
>.<
It's fun, just... for some reason, something comes along to distract more for a while every time I come back to it

I find the Borderlands series fun, I just find other games more fun.

yep

7:40 PM
I think I cleared NG+ for both 1 and 2. TPS was a slog and a rehash. Seeing friends playing 3 is giving me an itch. Blands' skill tree + looter shooter formula gets me good
Gotta pump them numbers

Thoughts on Tales?
Got it from a humble bundle, never played

7:57 PM
Oh, Tales of the Blands? Never played it either. Heard it was alright. It is canon and plot stuff from it does show up in Blands 3

8:27 PM
@Mego Just discovered retroarch was using 98% (!) of CPU after I thought I closed it with no windows for it over, quietly doing fuck all in the background
So you might want to check if that's a problem
