1:19 AM
@PhiNotPi Funnily enough, I have yet to even see the phantoms.

who here would play Terraria with me?

I would
Although I did just start a new world

Right now, or should we plan a time in the future?

1:42 AM
@NathanMerrill I'm busy tonight, but I should have some time tomorrow.

sounds good.

Are you on MST also?

yep
Between 7-10pm is best for me

Same, perfect

do you want to try some mods, or go vanilla?
I've done a single thorium run through, but there's so much I haven't done with Thorium, so I'd be interested in that

1:46 AM
I'm just getting into my vanilla world, so I wouldn't mind trying some mods

2:09 AM
@DJMcMayhem Ok, so the first thing you want to do is Install tModLoader 0.11.4
Then you boot up terraria, and go to the mod browser, and download the following mods:

Magic Storage
Recipe Browser
Thorium Mod
Helpful Hotkeys
Boss Checklist
imkSushi's Mod
Those are the 6 I'm running. Recipe Browser, Helpful Hotkeys, and Boss Checklist are UI only so I don't think you need them, but I listed them just to be safe
Magic Storage gets rid of the "store all of your stuff in a bunch of different chests", and puts it all in one chest, but it takes a bunch of gems to get up and running, and more gems to improve
imkSushi gets rid of the "farm a particular enemy for a particular drop", as most enemies have a chance to drop a token that can be used to purchase key items. So, for example, instead of farming a bunch of sharks, you can buy that Diving Helmet
It doesn't unbalance the game though: You don't get enough drops to buy everything. It just lets you buy the last few items you're missing. And there are different kinds of tokens based on your location and current progression
anyways, if those don't sound enjoyable, I'm willing to forgo them :)

2:33 AM
Magic storage sounds amazing haha

2:45 AM
And if anybody else wants to join, feel free

@El'endiaStarman My first experience with them was when I (briefly) joined an "only ocean" survival server. No sheep to be found, AKA no sleeping and no setting spawn.

Anonymous
The tokens from imkSushi are essential imo. Fishing is so frustrating in vanilla.

Anonymous
Also if your world doesn't have a real sword shrine or a jungle shrine with a lava charm, gg

Anonymous
I've considered getting into Terraria speedrunning

3:01 AM
@Mego But how likely is that? Especially in a large world

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem 4 shrines in large world, 2/3 chance of each being fake, so 16/81 ~= 20%

Anonymous
I don't know the spawn rate of jungle shrines (it's more complicated because it depends on jungle worldgen) or the drop rate of lava charms, but it's definitely possible to get unlucky and not find one. It's even more likely to not find one for everyone playing on a MP world.

@Mego these items are less important with Thorium

Anonymous
Also limited sky loot, so balloons and horseshoes are a limited commodity

^ This matters way more to me. I love my jumps

Anonymous
3:11 AM
@NathanMerrill Arkhalis is always important D:

Dunno, Thorium gives me so many weapons to play with I try to avoid swords
Just because I always go swords

Anonymous
Being able to make all of the balloons from tokens from regular underground enemies and the harpies that harass you while building a skybridge is incredible

Anonymous
@NathanMerrill True, but I still <3 the Arkhalis

Anonymous
o O ( I hope I'm spelling that right )

Also, Arkhalis is well less chance than what you describe

Anonymous
3:13 AM
In any Terraria setup, the first thing I do is rush merchant, collect penguins, and make a statue for the first blood moon after getting the mechanic

9/10 times it's an enchanted sword, only 1/10 times do you get the Arkhalis

Anonymous
@NathanMerrill True, but it feels especially bad to not even get to try the 10% roll because all 4 shrines are fake

Anonymous
The first world I played on, I got lucky and got the Arkhalis from the first shrine I found

Anonymous
Then my friends wanted their own, so we made like 20 more worlds just to shrine hunt

I literally just start digging down when I play. Dunno, I just love exploring caverns

Anonymous
3:15 AM
I make a penguin statue, horde penguins, and go get evil mushrooms for powder so that I can slaughter dozens of evil penguins during blood moons to farm Pedguin's set

Anonymous
And then I wear Pedguin's set, winter coat, and no other vanity items :P

I actually really like the Starfury

Anonymous
The Starfury is a great tool and an ok sword

Right. I'm an explorer, not a fighter :)
I've actually gotten pretty good at aiming the stars for enemies as well
but yeah, it's mostly for the exploration

Anonymous
Wallhack Sword :P

3:22 AM
@Mego perfect

1 hour later…
4:48 AM
@PhiNotPi Oh yeah that would straight up just suck.

8 hours later…
12:30 PM
@NathanMerrill Spelunking is the best part of both Terraria and Minecraft
Give me a few stacks of torches, a decent pick and sword, and some platforms and I'm good

4 hours later…
4:20 PM
Man, now I kinda want to go Minecraft spelunking. Haven't played that in probably a decade

@NathanMerrill I've never even heard about Akhalis before, TIL
Though after looking them up, it seems like the enchanted sword is better than the arkhalis.

5:26 PM

Terraria is one of those games I really, really enjoy playing with other people and can't stand it by myself
The core gameplay loop is really fun but I can never play these types of games where you have to create your own structure and decide what you want next by yourself
So I'm happy if there's just someone telling me go build this or go mine that or go kill that boss

Yeah, I greatly enjoy the "RPG-ish" element (hunt for loot, fight harder and harder bosses, get better gear, etc.) but trying to make a creative house for example stresses me out

@Pavel Kill Skeletron. that's always my goal.
WoF is way easier than Skeletron. Skeletron is easily the hardest boss for me.

These games always have a goal (Factorio - launch a rocket, Minecraft - kill the ender dragon), but the way to actually reach that goal is really nebulous and a task for someone else

At least for factorio, I feel like the goal isn't that nebulous because a smaller goal is always right around the corner, and they balance it so that you're on an ever increasing difficulty ramp that leads you closer and closer to the ultimate goal

5:39 PM
True, it's a bit different in that it gives you the structured tech tree

I've never beaten the ender dragon though, you're right about that one
I mostly enjoy exploring mines and making farms in that game lol

But you still have to plan out how you're going to get there, when I play factorio singleplayer I tick each of the boxes on the progression tree but with systems that are horribly unscalable because I just can't think ahead that far

Actually, I added the mod Boss Checklist to do basically that
I go through each boss, and see if I can do it

I like call of duty campaigns

@Pavel I think that's normal. I made horribly unscalable systems too, and the only way to be able to think that far ahead is to actually get to the end game to be familiar with it

5:43 PM
But it's not nearly as fun to look at a fine-tuned machine you've built than at the pile of hot garbage
Most of my time was spent playing on the server I run for me and my friends where they do a lot of the planning and build the core components like the main bus and I use that to build my own small projects, mostly creating weapons, exploring outward, and murdering all the biters

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem Incorrect - Arkhalis is one of the fastest-hitting melee weapons (I think only Fetid Baghnakhs are faster in vanilla). It also has good knockback for its attack speed, so it's really easy to stunlock enemies with it. Enchanted swords are slightly stronger ice blades.

Ice blades are the bomb
(in pre-hardmode)

So is there a PPCG terraria world or something?
er
CG&CC

You can call it PPCG if you like, I still do :P
And no, Nathan and I were planning on playing tonight (7pm MST, 1am UTC)

Also, why is 'Programming Puzzles AND Code Golf' PPCG but 'Code Golf AND Code Challenges' is CG**&**CC
It should just be CGCC
Way easier to type
@DJMcMayhem Are you guys open to people joining

5:51 PM
15 hours ago, by Nathan Merrill
And if anybody else wants to join, feel free

Oh cool

Anonymous
Best PHM weapons (IMO): Arkhalis/Cascade for melee, Phoenix Blaster/Star Cannon for ranged, Water Bolt/Space Gun for magic, Beenades for throwing, and rethinking poor life decisions for summons

Do I need hamachi or does someone have a server or does Terraria now have built-in peer-to-peer support?

@Mego do you know if summons are viable on Thorium?

Anonymous
@NathanMerrill I think so

5:53 PM
@Pavel idk, but you'll need some mods

It's through Steam

@Mego Space gun + meteorite armor is beuatiful

Yeah I saw the list above

@NathanMerrill Were you thinking crimson, corruption, or random?

Anonymous
The T-rex is a pretty good summon in PHM for Thorium

5:54 PM
Corruption. I hate crimson

Anonymous
But vampire knives

I'm totally fine with corruption, cause I'm doing crimson on my single player world, but that's kinda funny cause I dislike corruption and like crimson way more ha

Anonymous
Though if you're using imkSushi, it doesn't matter

yep, imkSushi

Anonymous
Yeah nvm, Corruption is significantly better in that case

5:56 PM
Also, just beat The Grand Thunderbird. What an easy boss

Anonymous
Because the main appeal of Crimson (vamp knives) is still available

Anonymous
Birb is meant to be an introductory boss, like Slime King :P

Anonymous
Also it's important because its drops are the first real gear that throwers get

Hey guys does this game have ui scaling

Anonymous
5:57 PM
Resolution

clearly. Slime King is a terrible first boss, btw, because it takes so long to get slime rain. And most players don't know to craft the item

Lowering the resolution just put it in the middle of the screen with black bars

Anonymous
@NathanMerrill I think it's intended that it's fought initially on the outskirts of the world

I thought the eye is the first boss

@Mego does he randomly appear there or something?
@DJMcMayhem This is always my first boss

Anonymous
5:58 PM
@NathanMerrill Yep, chance to appear in the outer third of the world

oh I didn't know that.

Anonymous
Eye is the first main progression boss, but if you can beat eye, you can beat slime king

WTF this is actually crap

@Mego Outer...third...?

This game is unplayable with a 4k monitor?

5:59 PM
How does queen bee rank compared to eye? Or brain/eater for that matter?

With all the comparisons between Terraria and Minecraft, I was expecting Terraria to have an unlimited world space.

Nope. Limited (though large)

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman Nope. 3 world sizes.

It's actually a good thing for Terraria as the world edges are actually different biomes

6:00 PM
Anyone else find it incredibly annoying to build on the edges of the world when you have to move your mouse instead of walking?

Ah, I looked it up, UI scaling is only available from the in-game settings, not the main menu

That always drives me crazy

Who builds at the edge of the world?

So how do I install mods?

I do when I'm making a bridge over the ocean for example

Anonymous
6:01 PM
@Pavel Install tmodloader, then go to mod browser

ty

@El'endiaStarman They're actually pretty different. I think Terraria is much more progression focused

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem It's even worse on console

The mod browser is in-game after you install tmodloader

6:01 PM
Ew
It's hard to even imagine playing such a mouse-centric game on console

Anonymous
The lock-on mechanic is the only reason why it's playable

Anonymous
And then the lock-on mechanic likes to not work when there's lag (like MP), so it becomes unplayable

Anonymous
And then you get Daedalus and it's almost playable again, except you aim the arrows with the right stick and the cursor is super slow

@NathanMerrill Also, what were you thinking for difficulty/world size?

expert large

6:06 PM
I'll take some getting used to expert, but ok

Anonymous
Expert is rough

Anonymous
But the mods make it more manageable

oh, I always do expert :)

It doesn't help that the only time I've tried expert was also on mediumcore lol

Anonymous
Can't wait for slimes to have guns with master mode in journey's end

6:07 PM
oh yeah, I hate mediumcore

Anonymous
Mediumcore is a mistake

Then what is hardcore?

you permanently die
which is also terrible
I hate losing items. I hate losing gold, but that's more manageable

I figured out my resolution woes
I tries using 1440p as my lower resolution, but the new nvidia driver uses integer scaling for pixel art games so that the graphics don't get blurry when upscaled, but integer scaling requires the lower resolution to evenly divide into the native resolution

I know how hardcore works. I meant if mediumcore is a mistake, then what is hardcore?
@NathanMerrill Yup, cause it makes you make bad decisions to go try and get them back

Anonymous
6:09 PM
@DJMcMayhem Extra mistake

Anonymous
Ultrahardcore mode: uninstalls the game and removes it from your steam library

Supreme ultrahardcore mode formats your hard drive when you die.

Hi @EricTressler! I'm trying to get Tametsi to work on my work Macbook, and I was wondering if I could ask you for the .jar file to run it directly? I already own it on Steam, and have completed every puzzle already; I'd just like the ability to replay it on all of my computers :D

Anonymous
Ultimatecore triggers HCF

Highest Common Factor?

Anonymous
6:13 PM
Halt & Catch Fire

Which mode triggers nasal demons?

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem That's just vanilla hardmode underworld

HCF seems less bad than your disk being formatted

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem pretty wild

Anonymous
@Pavel The catch fire part is literal

6:17 PM
10
2

Alrighty everything is set up
Also my characters are gone but that's ok

Those stars are going to make no sense to anyone looking back at the transcript

They didn't make sense to me either...
...until I looked at Discord.

Terraria has an interesting mechanic where you can persist characters between worlds

Anonymous
@Pavel Yep, plus piggy bank and safe inventory

6:21 PM
Yeah, I've always thought that was weird, but it kinda makes sense. It's hard to say that it really cheapens anything because you still have to get the good gear in one world first

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem Yeah well, some jokes are worth it :P

Come to think of it, I saw a factorio mod somewhere that let you put items into a rocket other than satellites to launch them to a different world
...the only Factorio mods I use is one that extends reach and a whole bunch that make explosions look and sound cooler

Factorio has a lot mods that make the game way better without really getting away from the feel of vanilla (Far reach, water tiles, squeak through, even distribution)

Anonymous
Bottleneck

Anonymous
6:31 PM
Alright that joke is played out

Came back to some chatty cathys

Anonymous
It's my lunch break and I don't want to go back to work, so naturally I'm chatting here :P

It's my work and I also don't want to go back to work
