@PhiNotPi Yeah, I'm not sure why either but I've been playing Minecraft with some coworkers over the last few weeks.

@EricTressler Do you still work on Tametsi? I have a small feature-request, on high-resolution displays the UI for the color picker for drawing doesn't scale with the rest of the interface and it's a little annoyingly small.
I realize this is a really minor issue but it seems like it would also be a really easy fix, so....

10:41 AM
@Pavel I do still work on it, when there's a problem.
the code for the color picker is actually a little bit tricky, because of potential off-by-one errors between the checkered / greyscale / color region, and also because the L/R selected color boxes look really bad if they're not identical
i had to go through a lot of iterations on the exact dimensions of that thing to make it functional and also not ugly. I'll take a look this weekend to see how hard it would actually be to fix that, though
other UI elements also don't scale -- do they also cause problems?

Do you guys know of a game that does interesting quest generation?
I had an idea of generating random missions by:

Generating a goal(fetch a flag), adding some preconditions (you cannot step on a flower), adding some world state (bunnies are hyper aggressive), and then perhaps adding additional segments to the quest.
This doesn't really work for story-based RPGs (as generating interesting dialog is tough), but it doesn't even have to be an RPG, you could do an RTS, or roguelike, or strategy game, etc

i think the reason most auto-generated quests aren't that interesting is because, in your example, you'd also have to simulate solving the quest (or something) to find out how hard it is -- are you fetching something in a desert town, or in the flower fields? or maybe it's in a cave with no flowers, but the only entrance is in the flower fields

Oh sure, calculating difficultly (and the impossibility) of the quest is really hard.

so you have to check that every set of conditions is reasonable, and at some point why are you spending so much time on this instead of just scripting something
i don't know how much time bethesda sank into its "radiant quests", but I don't think they amount to anything more than "grab X from this list of safe dungeons that aren't tied to the main story"

I can think of several solutions: 1. train an AI that trains itself on each of the conditions and the goals, and then solves it. (hard, time intensive, but potentially powerful) 2. Don't ensure success. 3. Ensure that conditions are orthogonal. (There's no area that is impossible to cross through without touching a flower)
Bethesda was also creating a story-based game, which is a problem. Trying to make up interesting quests from a story point of view is much much harder

12:30 PM
I was thinking of 1; and yeah, it would definitely be more interesting if you could be sure that your auto-generated content was always reasonable without going through it manually

@EricTressler Oh you made it Tametsi? Cool. For UI issues, I would say the line generated by the row mine count is either too thick or has too much alpha

I've actually been thinking about this in relation to roguelite platformers; they all get built from a set of pre-designed rooms that are stitched together. If instead you had a simulation running underneath, you could just make anything and see if the AI can beat the level
but that would have to be in the design from day 1, I think
@Veskah you mean the toggled lines when you click a column hint?

Yeah

@EricTressler oh yeah, for sure

It seems like it's easy to blot out a tile's number, especially if it's hit by multiple lines
For reference, I usually play on 1280x960(I think it's 960) windowed.

12:37 PM
I think I tried a variety of settings for those lines; I think at one point the numbers were also on top of them
I don't actually remember why I didn't like that option, maybe it just looked inconsistent
but anyway, obviously if the line is too small then it isn't helpful either. Is this something that's causing you a lot of problems?

Huge problem? Not really but I do find myself being slightly annoyed in especially dense puzzles where the individual tile is small and doubly hit (I like to light up all the hints so it might be a self-inflicted problem)

ah; i only light them up 1 or 2 at a time, when i think they're immediately relevant
well, I will check out slightly narrower lines one more time -- it could possibly depend on the number of tiles in a puzzle, but i'm not promising anything

I'd say look more into making them slightly more transparent first than width
Oh also, good job on the puzzles, you fiendish bastard
I've spent way too much time staring at the same set of tiles

12:56 PM
hah; thanks. time for work for me. ttyl

Adios

I'm getting back into Tametsi. Colorblind mode is a godsend

1:38 PM
@Mego I agree

I saw that Google Stadia has gone up for preorder. Anyone going to be picking it up when it comes out this autumn?
Looks like it's going to be 1080p/Stereo for the free edition and up to 4k/5.1 for the $9.99/mo Pro edition (plus the cost of controller/Chromecast/etc. hardware).
Pro edition also gets you a free game per unspecified time period (like Xbox Gold or PS+).

3:11 PM
@EricTressler Honestly there aren't a whole lot of other UI elements, so I never even noticed that they're pretty small too.

@AdmBorkBork Free edition if you buy the hardware?

@DJMcMayhem Yeah, free once you buy the hardware.
But that's only releasing "next year" sometime.

It doesn't even seem to be available in my region yet, but I also don't really see the appeal.

Honestly, everything about stadia seems to good to be true except for not being able to play offline. I'm slightly skeptical that 60FSP 4K over the internet is even possible

@MartinEnder It's significantly cheaper than purchasing a new $500 console -- the hardware will likely be around $75 -- I think that's the big appeal.

3:22 PM
I already have my gaming hardware. I'm on it right now :)

Sure, but consoles that aren't a Switch don't really appeal to me any more either. The only reason I'm not selling my PS4 is because I still wanna finish Horizon Zero Dawn at some point.

I'm assuming Switch appeals to you due to the exclusives?

Mostly. And the hybrid handheld/home console thing is pretty neat.

And the versatility I'd assume. (It's like a console and a super high-end gameboy at the same time)

Sure, but stadia gives you versatility as well

3:24 PM
Provided you have a Pixel 3

If you have an internet connection :P

Right, both have conditions attached to them.
The switch requires you to bring an additional device around with you
I guess that's true with the controller
My argument is that both have a bunch of versatility, so in my mind, it really comes down to the games

Yeah. I wonder why it's specific to the Pixel 3/3a

which, so far, I've only heard about Nintendo games, so there's way more pull to get a Switch than Stadia

@NathanMerrill I guess, but they're versatile in different ways. "Be able to game anywhere you bring this small device" appeals to me much more than "Be able to game anywhere you bring this device and have an internet connection"

3:27 PM
@NathanMerrill yeah, the main sell for the Switch for me is Nintendo's exclusives. I very rarely get non-exclusive games for the Switch instead of PC, unless it's something I'd rather play on the couch like Baba Is You.

@DJMcMayhem oh sure, internet connection absolutely does decrease versatility. No argument here.

But compared to other major platforms, they are far ahead of the competition
@AdmBorkBork I don't know most of those games, but of the ones I do know, they all look like existing games

3:29 PM
Yeah. Doesn't seem to be anything "new"

so, how do you get gamers that already play their favorite games to switch when they can already play their favorite games :)

Oh, speaking of pixel, any recommendations on android phones? I'm thinking about upgrading some time. I've got a pixel 1 right now, and the battery is kinda giving up a bit and I'd like more storage. I don't really want a new pixel because to me an aux port is a deal breaker
@NathanMerrill I think the main appeal of stadia is that you won't need a 900 dollar PC to play those games. If you already have one, it's not that much of a competition IMO, but the lower bar for entry is great for casual gamers who are just trying to get into it

@DJMcMayhem so their target audience isn't hardcore gamers?
Then why are they fussing so much about FPS and resolution?

Hmm

@DJMcMayhem pixel 3a? I don't know, after having a Nexus for a few years, I don't think I could ever move away from vanilla Android again

3:32 PM
Does that have an aux port?

I've always gone OnePlus, but the reason I buy them (cheaper than the comparable phones) isn't true anymore
To me, the versatility argument does still hold true for players with big beefy desktops that want to play the same games elsewhere. That's absolutely a target audience. But I don't really see any other target audience.

the 3a also has much lower specs than the 3 though, apparently

A 3a is only 400? I was imagining it would cost way more than that

Both pixel and samsung have been decreasing their prices for a while now
People aren't upgrading their phone as often, so they are decreasing their prices to have a bigger appeal

3:40 PM
For what it's worth, I got to see a coworker play MK11 in the browser a couple days ago.

Oh, speaking of MK11, this was hilarious (and just a bit disgusting too)

@DJMcMayhem How many flying eyes in that video? (The joke is that like half of the fatalities have a flying eyeball)

4:04 PM
@NathanMerrill Can confirm. I bought my iPhone 7 Plus two years ago and see no reason to upgrade anytime soon.

I might have to upgrade soon if my headphone jack is jacked up

right. The phone as a device is pretty mature. The OS doesn't change much, there aren't any big new features, etc.

As an aside, how many people game on their phones?
I've dabbled in it, but don't see the appeal.

@AdmBorkBork I do in heavy spurts. I typically play light games with lots of strategy. Games like StS
so, right now, it's been weeks since I've played, but there may be a week where I play a bunch. It depends how bored I am, and how much time I'm spending in the car

@AdmBorkBork I have a time-killer mobage but beyond that, I usually browse /tg/ or /vg/ or check discord

4:10 PM
Yeah, I'll play a lot when I find a game I like, and then I'll get bored of it in a week
I played an idle game a crazy amount for a while, but I'm getting pretty bored of it now (especially since a recent update that made it more monetized)

Right. I figure if I'm out of the house, I'm not on my phone, and if I'm in the house I'd rather play on console or my laptop
Speaking of, I don't need a new laptop, but the Razer Blade Pro sure is slick

I don't play a lot on mobile, but I do play the occasional really good exclusive (Monument Valley, Alto's). In fact, I just bought a mobile game last weekend but haven't had a chance to play it yet (Witcheye).

you like those polished peaceful games

Don't know what drew me to Alto, but I like Escher (hence Monument Valley)

dunno, they both seem really similar. Atmospheric, casual, pretty

I think I care enough about gameplay that they don't seem to have a whole lot in common to me :D

Sally's Law as well is like that

6:40 PM
Sure, but again is a completely different game.
Actually, I think initially I just downloaded Alto because I was impressed by this article: gamasutra.com/view/news/274137/…

I agree, they all have totally different gameplays, but doesn't that support my argument?

Maybe? I guess polished games make it more likely that I check out what the gameplay is about, but I normally decide what to play based on the latter.

Ok, fair enough. I wasn't actually a huge fan of the actual gameplay of Sally's Law (and it's been too long since I've played monument valley to remember). I still really enjoy Alto, though.
The 3 missions, the changing environments, the different characters
it's all so good

Unfortunately, my tablet can't run Odyssey smoothly

7:11 PM
Alto's is just so simple and relaxing

By far my least favorite addition to Minecraft is the phantoms.
