Someone made a mini metroidvania in SMM2: 12S-2DH-NXG

4 hours later…
2:46 PM
AMID EVIL is pretty alright. It's basically Hexen with Painkiller's soul system grafted on

3:05 PM
Why does SMM2 have to be linked to the Switch. I've been following SMM (and SMM2) for the longest time, as it's easily a game I would sink massive amounts of time into, but I'm struggling buying an entire console for a single game. And yeah, I know the other games are good, but it's still hard to justify the price point.
I'd buy it (full price) in a heartbeat if it was on PC

Yeah, SMM2 is getting pretty close to tipping the scales for me getting a Switch. Other games I would get are Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Mario Odyssey.

Just get LittleBigPlanet and pretend it's SMM

You're not a True Gamer until you purchase a console just for one game. ;-)

I'm fine without that label :)

hehehe

3:23 PM
Just a reminder but ESA Summer 2019 starts on July 20th esamarathon.com/schedule

@Veskah on this note, I remember watching a video where a guy reviewed a video game where you make other video games. It's in 3D, and all assets you make are automatically shared with others. I wish I could remember what it is called

Is it the PS4 one? Dreams?

oh yeah, that's it.
I mean, SMM2 has much more appeal, because I enjoy grid-based games, especially when it comes to creation, as I really love a good layout challenge

Have you see any of Ceave's videos about funky stuff you can do in SMM1/2?

Yeah, of course.

3:30 PM
@DJMcMayhem Yes

I'm not sure whether those kinds of shenanigans would appeal to me more or more flowy/speedrunny levels.

I'm all for the shenanigans :). There are plenty of flowy levels, and not enough unique levels.

As long as it's not "Hurr, Kaizo" or "Hurr, here's a star and 3 million Boom-Booms"

I binged Ceave's "Dangerous List of Evil" playlist yesterday...

I recommend Icay for more shenanigans. His videos have some overlap with Ceave's bugs in SMM2 video, but Icay actually posted his first :)

3:33 PM
Yeah, I've seen at least one of his.
Pretty amusing how often he saved Ceave's no-left-stick run of Odyssey.

oh yeah, I forgot about that :)

"So it looks like this run is over. :( .... *fanfare* Wait what?"

1 hour later…
4:48 PM
I'm strongly in favour of all of you buying Switches for SMM2 :P

Send me $300 and I'll definitely do it. ;)

I've already got a switch, now I just need to convince myself to get SMM2
But the more often you post your level codes, the harder it is to resist :P
It also doesn't help that nearly every YouTuber I follow has been doing almost exclusively SMM content for the last two weeks (which I'm completely ok with)

Shoot, I picked up a set of lockpicks and a cut-away lock because of the LPL and BosnianBill I've been watching

3 hours later…
7:47 PM
I caved

Oh, thought you were Nathan.

Nope, not Nathan (last I checked)

Just what a Nathan would want me to think

The conspiracy truly does run deep

8:09 PM
That's why you never see us in the same room at the same time

o:

[squints at people-in-this-room list]

8:32 PM
@DJMcMayhem \o/
I still need playtesters :D

If Caveas is to be believed, you don't get entered into Endless mode without a play and a like
So you need stat boosters :D

I do have a bunch of plays and likes and even a few clears, but what I'm looking for is constructive feedback :P

Needs more coin cannons. Always more coin cannons

8:46 PM
@MartinEnder I'll try it out with now!
Although I think it's kinda ridiculous that the online features cost extra :/

hm yeah it's kinda weird. at least now I can also get all the Smash achievements that need online play

Oh, I was going to ask: Is sharing levels considered an online feature? Or just the coop/competitive play?

I think sharing and playing levels is considered an online feature

that's crazy. That was free in SMM1, right?

probably? I've never had a Wii U, but my impression is the online subscription is a Switch only feature

8:55 PM
My gut feeling is that this is in line with other console online services, yeah? You need to pay to be able to play with/against others.

I think it also makes more sense to just view it as a platform thing and not something specific to the game.

Does SMM2 require the online subscription to play at all?
I know there's a story mode
and local coop, and local building

no, you can play local multiplayer and story mode and just build your levels without uploading them

huh. I'm surprised that uploading/downloading (or the various types of runs) require the subscription. I mean, that part of play surely isn't that expensive
I may be totally wrong though :)
oh, actually, uploading does take more processing power than I'm giving them credit for.
because they have to validate that the level is legit

that is primarily done by you having to beat it yourself

9:01 PM
right, but I imagine the server has to replay your run to make sure it is legit

that's possible

I know that's the right way to do things. Perhaps they simply have safeguards to ensure the level comes from a real machine, and ban people that break the rules

9:30 PM
@MartinEnder I finally got it!

awesome! :)

It'll take me a minute to write out my thoughts

sure, no rush

Anonymous
@NathanMerrill Sure, but it does the bare minimum. Dev blocks are frequently used to subvert the verification.

source?

9:35 PM
@NathanMerrill I've been watching a lot of Ross from Game Grumps (who is renowned for making ridiculously hard levels), and he frequently uses dev exits.
Which I guess is just one person

oh, you mean a hidden dev exit

Yeah. Or even a non-hidden one (like in this level, which is because nintendo is dumb about not sorting multiplayer vs single-player levels)

Sure, but you can't expect the server to do anything except follow the run to make sure it works

@MartinEnder Levels 2 and 3 were probably the most frustrating, although I think that's because I had the wrong solution for 3 (I tried trggvat fznyy fb V pbhyq trg gur pbvaf ol gur rkvg, naq gura tbvat onpx sbe gur sver sybjre. Guvf jnf ernyyl uneq orpnhfr V unq gb pnershyyl whzc bire gur gjb cvenaun cynagf thneqvat gur ragenapr, juvpu xvyyrq zr gur svefg gvzr).
2 was frustrating because the timing to get the koopa down was fairly precise, although it wasn't super hard to execute once I figured it out (and having an easy reset was great). I also sound a sort of soft-lock for level 2...
Level 4 was great, and probably the hardest of them all. I figured it out purely by accident TBH, but the solution was fun, and having a checkpoint right before was nice. Level 5 was thankfully straightforward, I liked how obvious the solution was even though it's not necessarily easy to do.
I also think I don't entirely understand the intended solution for 2, particularly with the claw

yeah it sounds like you had a weird solution for 2, there shouldn't be any precise timing
I'm also not entirely sure what you were trying to do for 3 :D

9:39 PM
But it was fun! I like puzzle-ey levels, and the super coins were a nice little extra challenge

what's the soft-lock you found?

@MartinEnder I was going back for the fireflower after getting small. The piranha guards made it hard to get the fireflower

oh I see. yeah the rooms are meant to be self-contained so the retrievable fireflower is only meant for if you mess up
but getting back shouldn't be too hard? just jump straight up after exiting the pipe.

There were a couple levels where I took advantage of everything but blocks respawning.
@MartinEnder That killed me once
@MartinEnder It's not quite a soft-lock, but it took a couple tries before it let me out. If you get small and then hit the on/off block in the upper right corner, mario will get stuck in the blue blocks directly underneath it. To get out, you have to hit the on/off block again, which turns the blocks blocking the exit red.
I hope that's clear enough

oh, I see

9:43 PM
But I was able to get out, so it wasn't too bad

I figured there'd be no reason to hit that block once you're small :D good catch though

If you haven't ground-pounded the bricks by the exit yet

ohhh yeah, good point

Was the intended solution for 4 to jnyy whzc jvgu gur fbsg uryzrg obhapvat ba lbhe urnq fb gung lbh pna xvpx vg guebhtu gur fcvxrf?

yep
I think in hindsight, puzzle 2 is too hard for where it is in the level.
Intended solution: Trg gur xbbcn bhg bs gur cvg. Fgbzc gur svefg fjvgpu. Qebc gur furyy vagb gur frpbaq cvg naq obhapr ba vg gb uvg gur frpbaq fjvgpu. Tb qbja gb gur obggbz naq oernx gur oybpxf. And puzzle 3: Gur vqrn jnf gung lbh arrq gb trg uvg gjvpr ohg gur ynetr cvenaun cynag vf ninvynoyr gbb fubegyl gb fcna lbhe v-senzrf. Fb lbh arrq gb fgbc gur pbairlbe orygf jvgu gur C-fjvgpu. 10:04 PM
yeah, I got that for puzzle 3 after I beat it it made more sense. My solution for puzzle 2 was waaaay different
@MartinEnder Ubj qb lbh trg gur xbbcn bhg bs gur cvg jvgubhg guebjvat vg?
Oh wait, can you just set shells down?
No wonder I had such a hard time with level 2 XD

@DJMcMayhem haha yes. Wow that would have made that level a lot a harder.

10:35 PM
@MartinEnder Feel free to ping me if you make any more levels :)
