@DJMcMayhem Do you know the YouTube channel The Sound Test? The guy does these crazy long in-depth podcast/interview things about video game music. I started following him because the current season is going to contain videos about Hollow Knight and Ori (though those aren't out yet), but he just released one about No Man's Sky a few days ago and it's really good so far.
I guess since they're podcasts they might be available on other platforms where they get more attention
for some reason I've never bothered to actually look at the playlist of season 1 but it's got Banjo-Kazooie (with Grant Kirkhope) and Donkey Kong Country (with David Wise). I absolutely need to check these out :D
@MartinEnder ooooh...this gives me a really good idea. You know how No Man's Sky has procedurally generated levels by randomly picking particular elements and putting them together: you can do the same with music
A simpler form of this is Eluvium's Shuffle Drones album. It's 20-30 short ambient segments that all start/end on the same synth chord so you can put it on shuffle/repeat and get an endlessly looping and never quite repeating ambient track.
The (non-)seams are actually quite noticeable, but it still works really nicely for background music. For a game where you could have your own shuffling logic, and even dynamically mix different tracks together you can do much more elaborate stuff.
