@user709833 I would read through the threads linked above. I hesitate to speculate, because the only information I have is at least third hand, but my impression is that SE is planning on rolling out a new code of conduct. There was some heated discussion among the moderators, after which a moderator was demoted. There has since been a wave of moderator resignations, posts on Meta Stack Exchange, and general sturm und drang.

i tried reading through the threads but it was a little confusing
no one seemed to have any actual details on why the demotion took place

No. There does not seem to be anyone who is both willing and able to elaborate. Those who are willing are bound by NDAs, and SE (the corporation) is not communicating.
Further speculation seems unwise.
