@Elva According to her story, She was hiking and ran out of water, so she thought she'd drink from a puddle, but that puddle was contaminated with bear urine. So she first tried filtering it with a tea bag and then wanted to boil it, but she couldn't start a fire because the wood she had was too wet to start a fire well, and when she saw smoke, she called the fire brigade

@Elva Cant you sanitize a lot of shit in water by boiling it and capturing the steam in some way?

Like when you take the steam and recondense it in water it becomes pretty clean (but not perfect) water

@Fredy31 just boiling water (no evaporation/condensation step) is a straightforward way to eliminate pathogens, although it won't help with non-pathogenic contaminants. It's a common safety step when you're drinking potentially-tainted water. Distillation will help with more contaminants but requires considerably more apparatus to do effectively.

If I were desperate enough to drink bear urine I would definitely boil it first if I could.

Wouldn't' a "mostly effective" distilation thing be basically uuh, a plastic bag with the water condensing and running out into a second container?

@Elva That is indeed a rudimentary water harvesting tool they use (or used to use) in certain parts of the world: dig a shallow wide pit, put some rocks in it with a container in the middle, then lay a dark tarp over it, weighed down with rocks around the edge and above the center. Water will evaporate from the rocks, condense on the tarp and drip into the container. Of course, this really is something mainly used in the desert, and I don't think this really works in a forest

@Nzall It can, but you usually have a large surface area container with the untreated water and just a cup at the center for the distilled water, and then use saran wrap instead of a tarp.
