@Wipqozn is there any other civilized country that allows life without parole for children?
reading a bit more about the specific case just makes this much worse

11:42 AM
@MadScientist tbh "Is there any other civilized country that does this?" should just be the national slogan for the USA at this point.
Going to be asking that more and more with the current supreme court

11:59 AM
life without parole is considered too cruel for adults here, and is essentially impossible. For children the maximum sentence is 10 years

A handful of uncaring narcissists brought us to lockdown; why aren’t they facing consequences? halifaxexaminer.ca/featured/…
Yuuuuuup
> The Halifax region is under lockdown, thanks to a recent surge in COVID-19 cases. The apparent root of this rise in the deadly virus was a social gathering involving travelers who refused to quarantine. Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia’s chief medical officer of health, struggled at Thurday’s news briefing to avoid being bolted down on the matter.

@Wipqozn I usually fall more in line with The Coast, but this is spot on.

@MBraedley It's very accurate

2:04 PM
@MadScientist In Canada, every inmate is guaranteed a chance of parole after 25 years. That's why we have the phrase "25 to life".

It's after 15 years here. And there's some additional version intended for very dangerous prisoners, though even these have a chance if they are not considered dangerous anymore at a later point

US Justice system has always had very harsh prison sentences.
I THINK it got way worse under Nixon, too?

and clinton, and probably just continuously for decades

Generally speaking, sentencing leniency is not a very popular platform
Like, I don't think you're going to gain voters by saying you're going to reduce sentences for violent crimes. maybe for weed offenders, but not for something like rape or terrorism

And I don't think we should be sentencing people to death by imprisonment
And to be clear, for juviniles, neither does any other country in the world
None of them. Though it is possible in a handful, the sentence has only been given to juveniles in the united states.

4:38 PM
Honestly, for most people a long prison sentence would be enough, I agree. But there is that 1% or .1% of extreme criminals, people on the scale of a McVeigh, a Little or a Coe, who show extreme depravity and no remorse
Like, I'd hesitate to put the max penalty for the most heinous of crimes committed as an adult below life imprisonment
