life without parole is considered too cruel for adults here, and is essentially impossible. For children the maximum sentence is 10 years

@MadScientist In Canada, every inmate is guaranteed a chance of parole after 25 years. That's why we have the phrase "25 to life".

It's after 15 years here. And there's some additional version intended for very dangerous prisoners, though even these have a chance if they are not considered dangerous anymore at a later point

US Justice system has always had very harsh prison sentences.

Generally speaking, sentencing leniency is not a very popular platform

Like, I don't think you're going to gain voters by saying you're going to reduce sentences for violent crimes. maybe for weed offenders, but not for something like rape or terrorism

And I don't think we should be sentencing people to death by imprisonment

And to be clear, for juviniles, neither does any other country in the world

None of them. Though it is possible in a handful, the sentence has only been given to juveniles in the united states.

Honestly, for most people a long prison sentence would be enough, I agree. But there is that 1% or .1% of extreme criminals, people on the scale of a McVeigh, a Little or a Coe, who show extreme depravity and no remorse

Like, I'd hesitate to put the max penalty for the most heinous of crimes committed as an adult below life imprisonment
