the correlation between economic distress and trump support is weak to nonexistent; the correlation with feelings of xenophobia, fear of change, and fear of loss of status is strong. If you pretend it's all down to economic factors you will keep running face first into the problem that making life better for bigots will not actually win their votes unless you are also making life worse for the people they hate.
