1:54 AM
It's like a skip away from a North Korean golf story

2 hours later…
4:19 AM
Err no BuzzFeed, he shot his brother with a gun he knew was loaded because his brother didn't want to play, then put the gun back and called 911 to report his brother "fell"
Narrator: Yeah like they said he was playing cops and robbers
Fair, but still

2 hours later…
6:25 AM
How much money could one make from betting on PredictIt against ridiculous predictions like Hillary Clinton being chosen as VP?
99¢-1¢ on that one

6:38 AM
@TimStone trying children as adults is still stupid

6 hours later…
1:02 PM
> The 13-year-old told arresting officer Erica Polcha that he retrieved one of the two loaded 9mm handguns that their father kept in the living room couch to use during the game. The boys' father, Mark Snyder, later told police that he kept the guns loaded and unsecured "for home protection."
To use during the game...?
Also, aren't weapons in the home supposed to be secured behind a lock add unloaded?
As in, legally. I know that's what countries with sane gun control laws have.

1:21 PM
@MadScientist I agree but he also definitely just murdered his brother on purpose, so I dunno what you do with that

@TimStone trial as adolescent/child, here in Germany that still carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, though there is a much stronger focus on rehabilitation compared to trial as adult in the sentences

1:34 PM
@Wipqozn afaik storage requirements vary by state but I assume this guy sits down on his couch and watches news that tells him someone might come for him that he needs to shoot and that's why he has loaded guns in his couch

1 hour later…
3:17 PM
@BradC this without a vaccine method (single shot or regular booster) correct?
i thought i saw an article a couple of days ago saying, i think Spain, was showing how herd immunity wont be possible without a vaccine. but if even a vaccine wont help, then we're fucked

Given that we don't have a vaccine yet and that isn't a hypothetical story but an actual story
=p

@Memor-X Right, this is someone who verifiably had it, recovered, tested clear, then was reinfected by a difference source.
Clearly has implications for how effective a vaccine might or might not be, of course
> Fauci has become the enemy, of course, because he has prioritized his efforts to understand a pandemic that has killed nearly 135,000 Americans and sickened millions over the imperative of protecting Trump politically at all costs.
> Fauci’s efforts may have been flawed at times, but by all appearances they were undertaken in good faith. And that’s the cardinal sin here: Since handling a public health emergency in good faith requires a sincere — if sometimes tactful — effort to inform the public about it, this has inevitably put him in Trump’s crosshairs, because it has reflected badly on Trump.

@Memor-X Let's be honest here: even with a vaccine, it's already uncertain whether enough people would voluntarily take it for herd immunity, especially in the states and other low-vaccination rate areas. However, if we can get an effective cure, we may not need herd immunity

@Nzall As politicized as this whole pandemic has become in the US (which is a pretty twisted sentence to write), you may be right that lots of people won't be willing to get vaccinated
But just as much, I've heard people talk about how low the supply of vaccinations might be, at least at first
And who exactly gets the few that are available
(Trump's rich friends? Just a coincidence??)

@Nzall to be honest with the bragging Trump does i wouldn't trust US made vaccine unless i have the assurance that's it's been properly tested, which i hope doctors would do aswell (not suggest it unless they think it's been tested properly). elsewhere i have a but more faith and a Queenland University has said that they're wont be ready until mid next year (started phase 1 clinical trials)

3:28 PM
Didn't the US also make a lot of contract to have time limited monopoly over most places that make vaccines?

@Elva i think they tried with a German lab, not sure if that was successful or not. but they did horde medical supplies of a treatment drug because of the monopoly that the patent owners have
@BradC another thing i wouldn't trust current America on. honestly you would think that front line health staff should get it so they can keep treating those who get it without fear but got a feeling that Trump will want vaccination in the federal Stockpile and we know who those are not for
@BradC i feel that his actions is 21st century book burning, just the books aren't actually books but people
like rather than gathering followers to collect books to burn, he just starts trying to smear an expert and his core base will do the same online when then feed back into real life

@TimStone I assumed it was this:

@Stormblessed The (not the) Onion headlines write themselves

4:20 PM
@Stormblessed he is what he has always appeared to be

4:30 PM
giving the Lincoln Project too much credibility is a bad idea

4:42 PM
@BradC I mean, vaccinations already are a political issue because everything's fine.

@Yuuki true, but up to Covid, my perception is that vaccine deniers were spread more evenly across the political spectrum. There is plenty of homeopathy/naturopathy/alternative medicine/woo on the political left
Now the anti-"liberal left" contingent on the right is overlapping and amplifying the anti-vax contingent
(I'm sure you could weave the climate denialists in there, too)
At least in my Facebook mentions, there is a third overlapping group: the Christian conspiracy theorists
(part of that is driving the now-mainstream Covid conspiracy theories about Bill Gates)
Wrap in the "Mark of the Beast", the end times, and libs coming to take your guns, and you've got yourself a nice little tinder box

4:58 PM
@BradC Due to current events, I have honestly considered getting a gun myself, though I have yet to pull the trigger.

@Yuuki so to speak

@MadScientist Pretty sure US justice system doesn't care about rehabilitation at all.
Looks like Ontario is moving into the next stage of reopening for only part of the province cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/…
Greater Toronto area being the most notable exception
Tbh Ford is handling this way better than I expected
> The province says it will allow indoor gatherings of up to 50 people in Stage 3, and outdoor gatherings of up to 100 people. However, according to the plan, physical distancing remains a requirement for all people who are not from the same household or established social circle.

5:25 PM
@Wipqozn A lot of people have surprised me with their leadership against coronavirus.

6:02 PM
@Yuuki I have no problems with responsible gun ownership, for the record: licensed, trained, safely maintained and stored and proper trigger discipline

1 hour later…
@Stormblessed It is, however, emblematic of how disagreement works nowadays.
Don't like what someone said? Go dig through their entire history and surface something to make them look bad.

another bad one is that if you watch TV in the right place you could both get ads saying "Joe Biden put too many people in jail" and "Joe Biden wants to let all the criminals out"

1 hour later…
8:21 PM
California governor shuts churches, businesses as COVID-19 cases surge reut.rs/38WIfLg
They weren't already doing this...?
Glad to see they're taking action... But these regulations should've already been in place.

@Wipqozn At least California is taking some actions now
It does seem that companies take it more seriously than the government even in California. I spoke with a friend in California earlier today, and she wasn't in the office for months, and just now she is back but alone in an office and working in shifts.

@MadScientist Yeah, but it may be too little too late.

@Wipqozn There's not really a too late. Of course the lag between reporting and the actual infections and deaths means that it'll always get worse for a while until the measures take. But it's still better than letting it run entirely unchecked

8:43 PM
Trump is doing the "If only we tested less" thing again, but he extended it with "if we did half the testing we'd get half the cases" which is even more not how any of that works than before

@TimStone How does the math not add up? I'm confused

@TimStone What Trump says is incredibly stupid, but even the more general "we're having more cases than everyone else because we're testing more" is such a blatant lie

9:02 PM
So they've posted the clemency order for Stone. It does in fact do away with the prison sentence, the supervised release, and the $20k fine

9:20 PM
@Nzall There's nothing to say that testing half as many people would produce half as many cases, because who was allowed to be tested would change if there was even less available testing
