saw this on Phillip DeFranco yesterday. he almost brags about how many people he's arrested and what the youngest was
> He also had allegedly admitted to arresting a 7-year-old boy when he spoke to school officials in footage of his arrest of Rolle.

“Now she has broken the record,” Turner said in the video.

1:43 AM
I saw that too and almost brought it here. What. The. Actual. Fuck. 6 years old, restrained and arrested for "acting out".
If I were her mother, I'd be out for blood.
Now the twitter feed says she attacked a teacher. I'd like to know the full truth.
But short of her using a weapon, restraint and arrest is total overkill.

> According to the newspaper, Turner and another officer, Sergio Ramos, had been called to the school last September after Rolle reportedly threw a tantrum and hit staff.
a part of me feels that there's no weapon

2:02 AM
A six-year-old throwing a tantrum? Sounds like a job for the SWAT team.

2 hours later…
3:49 AM
stares directly into camera Folks
Maybe it's a strategy to get us to appreciate that we'd all like to throw a binder every now and then?

@TimStone .....out of a cannon
@TimStone was as in former employee before picking up a gun or was as in former employee before dying
before the former could speak to motive

3 hours later…
7:52 AM
for lent: give up religion
Actually just do that anyway

8:31 AM
for lent: commit to stop doing something for longer than just lent. it's not a purge

8:44 AM
But it actually is isn't it?
> The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer for Easter through prayer, doing penance, mortifying the flesh, repentance of sins, almsgiving, and self-denial
Yeah it is
Business as usual afterwards again

2 hours later…
Tim
10:26 AM
How are you doing?

Hey @Tim, this is the news discussion offshoot of The Bridge - If you wanna talk about random stuff you're welcome there :)
(MUAHAHAHA THREE LETTER PING ALL THE TIMS)

Tim
oh, ok
In the first minute, is there ink or birthmark on Christ Cuomo's forehead?

3 hours later…
1:40 PM
@Tim yesterday was ash wednesday, so it was ashes

Christianity: The first virtue signallers (probably not actually the first)

It's such a weird day because like, literally the gospel for the day is Matthew 6:1-6,16-21, "Jesus said, "Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven."
then 4 seconds later
It doesn't make any god damn sense

...
I shall refrain from commenting :D

(reading 1 is similar because that's how the structure works: reading 1 and gospel are related, reading 2 depends): "Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing."
it's a dumb day

.. YOU ARE MAKING IT VERY HARD TO NOT MAKE FLIPPANT COMMENTS

1:55 PM
Unrelatedly
huh weird
you really think the OAS would just go on the internet and tell lies?
I could search for "coup" in this room and have my I told you so revenge but I'm not going to you know who you are

2:32 PM
I wonder what will happen to Steyer after he gets possibly second in SC
he only polls well there is the thing
but almost as well as biden in some polls
like is he going to get all the oxygen from the media and make Biden just completely get destroyed in the rest of the states?
I hate that this guy with no political experience can stay running for so long
but like Inslee, Booker, and others who have actually done things don't have the money to get poll numbers

This is a pretty big deal; it means, in all likelihood, that there are other cases out there, undiagnosed and still spreading
plenty of other related reporting on this, including from the NYT:

2:47 PM
Uuugh :(
I'm especially sad because my girlfriend lives there >.>

There is every reason to believe that this could get bad in the US, potentially fast.
Especially since tests for the virus are not widely available yet

And because the US charges 4 grand for testing sometimes
And doesn't have sick days guaranteed
And and and

@BradC I'm only marginally less worried then if trump was on the case

mike pence oversaw a HIV crisis in Indiana

2:54 PM
I've actually seen explicit speculation this morning that Trump is throwing Pence under the bus by putting him on this case, so he can dump him for a different VP candidate (specifically Nikki Haley)
when things go spectacularly wrong
Regarding my comment above about the actual status of the disease in the US:
> Problems with a government-created coronavirus test have limited the United States’ capacity to rapidly increase testing, just as the outbreak has entered a worrisome new phase in countries worldwide. Experts are increasingly concerned that the small number of U.S. cases may be a reflection of limited testing, not of the virus’s spread.

@BradC I think it's going to. I think it's going to get bad everywhere. Between Trump underplaying it and Iran doing whatever it is they're doing, we're going to see a significantly younger average population before this is done.

Fun fact, local public media just did a story on how Chinatown restaurants are basically deserted right now (and have been since coronavirus started being a thing).

@Jolenealaska inb4 Trump blames the Democrats for releasing the virus so they can make the general population younger and more progressive

Historically, our species can thank the Black Plague for quite a bit.

3:04 PM
@Nzall that would be just like him. He's already flipping on his "the stock market is a reflection of how awesome I am" this morning:

Of course, of course

Saw that one coming miles away.

Gee, in a brewing international crisis it sure would be helpful to have a thrustworthy leader that doesn't habitually lie about everything, including about telling lies from a week ago. Such a shame they're super rare

@Elva 100% yep. There is a cost for his untrustworthy reputation, and it may be paid in American lives.

Yeah, it was hardly an original comment :p
It's just so utterly dumb I can't wrap my head around it

3:13 PM
@Elva but still an important and necessary observation
I thought that this reckoning on his credibility might come about during an international crisis of some sort (if Iran had escalated further, perhaps)

Like the fucking sharpie thing

Perfect comparison

He is seemingly literally incapable of processing the idea that he was wrong

He is. Unfortunately, I know the phenomenon pretty well. My stepbitch (ahem stopmother) is a massively malignant narcissist.
She and Trump are cut from the same damn cloth.

@Elva people are already joking about Trump building a sharpie wall around the USA on CDC maps to keep the virus out

3:22 PM
Heh

3:33 PM
> coronavirus
> brewing international crisis

3:58 PM
> Coronavirus makes clear what has been true all along. Your health is as safe as that of the worst-insured, worst-cared-for person in your society. It will be decided by the height of the floor, not the ceiling.
I know that everyone I work with in my office is under the same (good) employer heath plan. But my wife is a substitute teacher in a public school, and regularly attends services at a large local church.
My kids attend large local public schools. My oldest son attends a large university
We are all vulnerable

@BradC And there will always be that person who imagines the worst-insured, worst-cared-for person in society and instead of thinking "we should take care of that person", they think "get them out of the country". And that person is in the Oval Office.

@Yuuki And that person is in the Oval Office. QFT
One of those things that is so stunning, and yet has become so normalized its no longer news. Guess we can't live in an constant state of jaw-dropped shocked amazement; its just not sustainable

One of the interesting things to me about the effects of the coronavirus in the US is that Houston's Chinatown restaurants are seeing a major drop in Chinese customers while at the same time, there's a slight increase in white/non-Chinese customers.
> In another corner of the strip mall, Mala Sichuan Bistro was about half full. Owner Cori Xiong said that’s not typical for this time. She estimates her business has dropped anywhere from 35 to 60 percent since the social media rumor started.

“We have had to decrease the shifts of our employees,” Xiong said, “and then had to temporarily lay off two of the kitchen crew.”

But the issue doesn’t seem to be with people outside of Chinatown shying away. Xiong said it’s that fewer Chinese people are coming. In fact, Xiong said, since the coronavirus rumors started, more non-Chinese people have

4:47 PM
@Yuuki There was that story (I think it was posted here) about a Chinese restaurant in Sydney, NS that wouldn't serve Chinese (or more generally, Asian) customers, who are predominantly exchange students at the university.

1 hour later…
5:56 PM
If you'll remember, Trump pardoned him before he was sentenced so his argument was that was basically like not being convicted at all, and obviously that's dumb so no

2 hours later…
7:51 PM
> "Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, one of the country’s leading experts on viruses and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infections Diseases, told associates that the White House had instructed him not to say anything else without clearance."
From this NYTimes article:
> [California] Gov. Newsom says 28 people in California have tested positive for Coronavirus. About 8,400 people are being monitored because of their travel. "We knew this was inevitable," he said.
On the lighter side, check out this mess of a map someone made:

IIRC, there's an unknown origin case (tl;dr someone who wasn't evacuated from Wuhan nor had been to China recently) and there's a likelihood that they contracted coronavirus due to proximity to the air base that the Wuhan evacuees were sent to.
so yeah, maybe bringing disease vectors stateside wasn't a great idea

@BradC I didn't know Idaho was in the middle of the pacific or that Maine was on the gulf coast.
Makes me question the veracity of that map.

I mean, you could possibly argue that "UT" stands for "University of Texas".
You'd be insane but you could do it.
I mean, chances are that the sign means "don't touch the things inside the cabinet" but come on, man.
Oh, it's not a cabinet.
Come on, man
> Sorry @NASA...@MarcoRubio dared me to do it!
> Tweeted by Mike Pence

8:10 PM
@Yuuki That's at least a few years old

8:31 PM
@BradC Some more information about that: the real map is here: cnbc.com/2020/02/26/…. The filename of the image in that article ends with "(1) (2)", so it's probably not the first version
And, if you look at the two maps side by side, the colors match up with the state labels. The one on Twitter is not just edited with the wrong state names

1 hour later…
9:54 PM
> Officials at the Department of Health and Human Services sent more than a dozen workers to receive the first Americans evacuated from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, without proper training for infection control or appropriate protective gear, according to a whistleblower complaint.
> The workers did not show symptoms of infection and were not tested for the virus, according to lawyers for the whistleblower, who is a senior HHS official based in Washington who oversees workers at the Administration for Children and Families, a unit within HHS.

2 hours ago, by Yuuki
IIRC, there's an unknown origin case (tl;dr someone who wasn't evacuated from Wuhan nor had been to China recently) and there's a likelihood that they contracted coronavirus due to proximity to the air base that the Wuhan evacuees were sent to.
welp
i suppose we can tie a ribbon on that "unknown origin"

2 hours later…
Tim
11:36 PM
I was wondering if this is true and what impact it will have
Looks like some tech people are unhappy. But I am not sure what it is
Are tech people mostly supporting Bernie, or not?
I have seen quite some are not. They either like Biden or Bloomberg
or Pete
Have there been some famous figures in tech industry openly supporting Bernie, except Richard Stallman?
Richard Stallman isn't in industry actually

The problem with asking about "famous figures" is that that correlates with "rich people", which kind of correlates with "not supporting Sanders"

Tim
right.
Do regular software engineers think that Bernie will tax them too much?

11:52 PM
I don't think I've heard anything specific about that before that article. My understanding is that most of the plans about taxing the rich mainly impact people making a lot more than the average software engineer
But honestly, it's probably hard to tell without actual polling data.

Also, giving stock options is mainly a start-up thing. And most software devs aren't employed at start-ups.
Like this wouldn't affect me at all.

Personally, assuming that he can implement both his tax plan and and the programs he would fund with it, I think the benefits would far outweigh the downsides even if my own taxes increase significantly.

Tim
I fully support Bernie.
But I have seen too many twitter users working as software engineers in big or small companies dislike him
