@Wipqozn Hmm this is pretty interesting but I'm always so wary of automated check-outs :|
Like I've never had a better experience at self checkout than I have with a real person

12:13 AM
@TimStone likewise, and i can't see supermarkets just having clerks at the counter accepting money as people pass them buy

12:49 AM
@TimStone In my opinion self checkout is inherently better because I don't need to interact with anyone

1:09 AM
Wouldn't it make the most sense to just order everything in that case?
I've just found the tech to always be poor and mostly an excuse to eliminate positions that are already underpaid as it is

1 hour later…
@TimStone if i didn't think it before i do now, the GOP are acting like fucken children

2:46 AM
@Memor-X its been their goto move for some decades now
@TimStone hue
@Wipqozn we have something like this near me but its with baskets and you scan the barcodes as you put things into the basket

@TimStone Apparently, in that same speech, he complained that curvy roads are hard to drive on when you're drunk

@TimStone from a business point of view, probably. For me it's always way faster. Either because I'm now in a queue which has multiple exit points, or because I'm just faster than most cashiers anyways (I used to be a cashier myself). I still use regular checkout occasionally if one happens to be empty.
Besides I don't believe in not letting robots take over jobs. to me it's just further evidence we need to properly tax the rich and have a universal income. Which, you know, Ontario was trying out (successfully) until Ford killed it.

11:12 AM
@Wipqozn There are actually a couple supermarket chains in Belgium that support in-store selfscanning: you scan your membership card at the entrance and get a handheld scanning device. while you're collecting your goods, you scan in the barcode of everything you get, and at the end you plug in your scanner, scan your card at the self-checkout counter and then pay
so you don't even need to unload your cart at the end. Just put your reusable bags in the trolley, put your groceries in directly after scanning, and then just pay and leave at the exit

> In 2010, Penny Arcade posted a comic strip that involved a character describing being "raped to sleep by dickwolves."
> Whether or not the strip was offensive isn't really relevant at this point: More than the comic itself, what made the most impact was how Penny Arcade responded to the readers – including rape survivors – who said it upset them. F
> irst, they mocked their critics with a series of posts and a flippant non-apology. In a subsequent "make a strip" demonstration at PAX Prime, Krahulik further needled the issue by drawing a dickwolf, and Penny Arcade even monetized the discomfort over the rape joke by making and selling "Team Dickwolves" shirts and pennants.
> And then on Monday at PAX, in front of an audience of thousands, Krahulik told business manager Robert Khoo that he regretted pulling the Dickwolves merchandise from the Penny Arcade store – merchandise he had created as a "screw you" to rape survivors who had had the temerity to complain about a comic strip.
> While the audience burst into applause, Khoo nodded sagely and said that now they knew better; now they would just leave it and not engage.

@Wipqozn fuck them, honestly. Into the sun.

:-( Damnit people why can't you be good people so I can keep enjoying your content.

it's not even like a good joke to stand behind, like, imagine writing that and also having your cowriter be like "that's the funniest thing I've ever seen"
one guy to not think of something funny, and another guy to think of something not funny

@Unionhawk Yeah, it's one of those "let's take a horrible thing and use it to make an absurdly implausible hyperbolic motivation so we can tell a shock based joke about a game" things. They tend to do that more often
Like, I think in one of the earlier comics they make a joke about someone hanging themselves as a punchline

check this out man, so, wolves, right

Oh wait, it wasn't a hanging joke, it was a joke about psychic powers

@Nzall to be fair, psychics would be a joke if they weren't also scamming people out of their livelihoods and worse

@TimStone He did not just support genocide, did he?

@TimStone wait, is that an actual quote? Because that sounds like a war crime if it is.

Yes

good news John: they do plan this

Former Bridgewater police chief convicted of sexual exploitation involving teen
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/sexual-assault-bridgewater-former-police-chief-1.5333184

@Wipqozn "17 year old" Isn't the age of consent in Canada 16?
Or is this straight up sexual exploitation of someone who didn't consent? Without it being statutory because of the age?

1:59 PM
@TimStone gimme a p, gimme a r, gimme a o, gimme a j...

> The complainant testified at trial that Collyer asked her an inappropriate question while the two were driving in May 2016 before putting his hand between her legs and assaulting her.

@Nzall Still a minor.

@MBraedley Is this another one of those weird interactions between legal classification of minor and age of consent where you can be convicted of sexual exploitation of a minor even if they legally can give consent?
And yes, I know she didn't give consent here

@Nzall No, it's more that minors cannot consent to sex with people older than 20 in most instances.

@MBraedley I see. And even if the assailant was younger than 20 himself, she seems to not have given consent anyway, so it doesn't matter in this case

@TimStone They were trying to find the real m&m

1 hour later…
@TimStone You need to learn to be more trusting.

@TimStone "But they're not crimes! That call was perfect!"

> And reflecting on the previous vulnerabilities in White House IT operations, he noted, "given all the changes I've seen in the last three months, I foresee the White House is posturing itself to be electronically compromised once again."

From income taxes to AirBnB rentals: How Alberta's new budget will affect your personal finances cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/…
> Albertans will pay more for everything from income taxes to user fees to tuition to smoking under the budget unveiled by the United Conservative government on Thursday.

> The budget aims to balance the books by 2022-23 and relies heavily on tax reductions and streamlining for corporations with the assumption those benefits will trickle down to individuals.
> The only signs of relief for individuals will come in the form of child benefits for families, or in the form of reduced taxes on corporate dividend payouts if you happen to own profitable stock.
How do people keep buying into and voting for this nonsense
Trickle down economics doesn't work. I mean, unless your goal is to keep the rich rich, which well

Even if you assumed it did work how is it supposed to make sense with increasing personal income tax? lol
