As you might imagine it was a Very Bad Situation, but I'm curious
> …the adults will be charged with three counts of child abuse and 66 counts of animal cruelty
Apparently the "95 mice, 60 rats, 23 baby rats" did not count
Presumably they just showed up to the uh, party?

Husky Energy layoffs underway in downtown Calgary beta.ctvnews.ca/local/calgary/2019/10/22/1_4650072.html
> In a statement, Husky Energy confirmed the layoffs but said the company "will not be sharing the number of jobs affected."
> Alberta Energy critic Irfan Sabir issued a statement Tuesday afternoon, pinning the blame on Premier Jason Kenney and a reduction to the corporate tax rate.
> “The Albertans who came to work today at Husky Energy only to be handed a layoff notice know that Jason Kenney’s corporate handout has failed them," it read.
> "Husky made $233 million from the corporate handout, but not a single dollar has gone toward job creation. Even before this bad news, Alberta lost 15,000 oil and gas jobs on Kenney’s watch. He has nothing to offer these energy professionals beyond more finger-pointing and giveaways for corporate shareholders.”
This is why corporate tax cuts don't work, and why cons don't care about the average joe. All tax cuts do is help the rich stay rich.

The NY Times, employer of Bret Stephens, has eliminated its newsroom security role

Remember when the guy who did the endowed toilets was the Attorney General? chuckles "Abuse of power is not illegal"

5:06 AM
@TimStone how do we rate this compared to "Truth isn't the Truth"?

5 hours later…
10:20 AM
BBC News - Essex Police: 39 people found dead in lorry container

The Herculean task for Scheer — or any successor — is how to formulate a climate change plan that is friendly to the party's base, but also convinces voters across Canada it will actually be effective. cbc.ca/news/business/conservative-climate-election-1.5330347
Maybe you should stop lying to your base about climate change then. Just a thought.
I'm sure they'd better appreciate things like a carbon tax if you weren't constantly spreading downright lies as propaganda

11:12 AM
> To the majority of voters in Alberta and Saskatchewan, it appears that the economics is clear: Attempts to control the growth of these provinces' fossil fuel outputs is an unreasonable attack on an industry crucial for their collective welfare.
> "Albertans are upset because after being the economic engine of this country for so long, we feel like our issues are ignored, and that we are being caricatured as people who don't believe in climate change," argued Nenshi.
> There are still plenty of Albertans who refuse to accept the simplest principles of climate change, including the mayor of Medicine Hat, who recently insisted carbon dioxide is not pollution but rather one of life's building blocks.
> But at least a few oilsands executives have repeatedly said they are willing to move toward a low-carbon future. And scientists and businesses across Alberta have schemes to cut carbon while creating local jobs.
That photo above was defaced in Alberta
>
The difficulty for the federal Conservatives is partly one of their own making: By pointing fingers at Trudeau as the author of their misfortunes, and by provoking the party's right with anti-carbon pricing rhetoric, it becomes really hard to step back.
> By almost all measures, carbon pricing, vilified as the carbon tax — charging consumers money for producing carbon, but giving it back so it can be spent on something else — is one of the easiest and most business-friendly ways of demonstrating you are taking baby steps away from climate change.
Fuck the conservatives, seriously. I hope this issue continues to kill them as a party.

12:06 PM
Presumably the whole thing is a quote from Ratcliffe? But one with which he agrees
And…someone did not properly explain the scope of the issue to these folk, huh?
Withholding the aid Congress approved for any reason was not okay

@TimStone Oh, I'm sure they understand the scope.
They're just twisting it so that it's Not a Bad Thing.

12:58 PM
Remember that little girl from 2017 who completed a bucket list before she died at 7 year old? Well, it's fake news and the mother has now been charged with 1st degree murder

1 hour later…
2:13 PM
@Nzall it's fucken disgusting this person could be called a mother
i just hope that the death was because of the medication the girl wasn't supposed to have, as opposed to the "mother" flat out killing her daughter to keep up the farce

2:50 PM
@GnomeSlice Yeah, this whole case seems like someone who went way too far on the whole "Trans women should always be treated as cis women". I agree for the most part, but not when it comes down to parts that are still male

I really dislike this sort of thing because it damages the credibility of everyone who comes after.

@Yuuki I mean, if she were to still identify as male, would she still go to a women-only waxing place?

I'm going to go ahead and strongly suggest that we don't go down this path

Seems like a smart option

@Unionhawk what happened?
What's the point of a news room if we can't discuss news hue

2:55 PM

C'mon, Trump, where's the idiocy when we need it?

@Yuuki I think everyone dislikes predators but I know what you mean

@GnomeSlice Considering the current discussions on SE and around the world around various aspects of transgenderism, I think it's not a good idea right now to bring in news articles that handle the more controversial aspects

It only takes a few bad and vocal actors in the spotlight to give a bad reputation to all kinds of groups
Because people are too dumb to form their own opinions a lot of the time

Yeah, I think that's enough on that one.
Well meaning or not, the topic is charged enough that we can just leave it alone for now.

3:00 PM
@Nzall noted I guess? Idk man there are like pins about these things in multiple rooms here right now I don't think it's off topic

@GnomeSlice Can we just stop about this please? I know you wanted to bring attention to the topic, but there's nothing good that can come from discussing a transgender person getting punished for abusing their gender

Relax Jesus
Nobody is going to ban you
I'm discussing the attitude of the room now not even the topic

> South Carolina Senate Republicans strip exceptions for rape, incest out of heartbeat abortion ban
oh great
so now even the moderately sensible parts of this dumb legislation are gone

@Yuuki I guess it wasn't stupid enough to challenge the precedent it was supposed to.

The question now is whether it's an attempt to put a case before the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade or whether it's one of those "designed to fail but at least we can say we tried so we can whip up our base" things.
When your support is based off fear, you always need a boogeyman. And it's cheaper to keep an existing boogeyman alive than to make a new one.

3:16 PM
courts have previously struck other similar heartbeats so
but yeah every state republican party wants so badly to be the case that overturns roe
they fantasize about being put into some history book like "oh, ACLU v. Ohio, the case that made forced birth the law of the land"

I think this discussion is too charged

> Hong Kong officially kills China extradition bill that sparked months of violent protests.
I feel like I've seen this before.
Multiple times the past couple of weeks.

@Yuuki what was in the bill? Do you know offhand?
Unless "extradition bill" means something specific, I may not be well versed

3:37 PM
I don't know what, exactly, was in it, but it was enough that many feared it was the start of China re-exerting it's influence on the city.
Granted, that may still happen, as China is not known for allowing challenges to it's authority.

@GnomeSlice IIRC, defendants in Hong Kong could be extradited to the mainland for trial.
Or something like that.

@Unionhawk Wtf resign

Currently, Hong Kong has no extradition agreement with mainland China (despite Hong Kong ostensibly being part of China, it's part-and-parcel of the whole "one country, two systems" thing).

@Wipqozn :'(

3:48 PM
@puzzlepiece87 Yeah it's sad. Also really fucked up.

@Wipqozn Exactly, though the real base is donors and rich companies who profit from fossil fuels.
@Unionhawk Definitely stealing this for future use, thank you.

4:37 PM
@puzzlepiece87 classic gif
Has a special place in my gif keyboard as well, haha
@Wipqozn are there any details on what happened with the shipping container? That's pretty fucked up
Like why or how?

@GnomeSlice No idea. I haven't read about it since I posted the first version of the article

5:19 PM
I was away at a farm so it's my understanding something really dumb has happened
Naturally Matt Gaetz is behind it

Yeah, I read about that.
"Oh, hey, we hate what the Dems are doing, let's crash their super secure space to make a point."
"Oops. We forgot the space was super secure. Our bad. But we totes are following the rules."

oopsie woopsie, just accidentally breached the SCIF and caused a major disruption

How were they even allowed into a SCIF with phones?

@murgatroid99 They ignored all the deputies and processes. Turns out, lots of it is based on the honor system.

Remarkable amount of the system predicated on mocs not being tools and yet here we are
Now they've ordered pizza
Domino's guy rolls up to the SCIF
Maybe Papa John's but they fired Papa John for being racist so idk

5:33 PM
shaq's pizza

Liberals will NOT be forming a coalition

@Wipqozn Bold move, cotton. Let's see if it pays off.

Anyway definitely put Matt Gaetz in jail and not just for DUI but they won't so actually this is quite a good stunt
0 consequence and the "DEEP STATE" folks will just eat it up because nothing matters

is this news fresh out of the SCIF?

Just your typical Senior White House officials leak
> Colleagues grew alarmed after hearing that Mr. Trump had referred to Kashyap Patel, a National Security Council aide who figured prominently in Republicans’ efforts to undermine the Russia investigation
> Mr. Patel, who is known as Kash
Of course
Anyway remember that time Nunes disappeared on the White House grounds or whatever? Never really got a satisfactory answer about that

@TimStone hmm, reminder to self next time i'm in NYC: don't go to 5th avenue

@TimStone Probably not a reputation they wanted to keep.
It's gotta be expensive for it to keep happening.

6:08 PM
I doubt the city is liable for people constantly crashing their rental trucks into a bridge

Liable, no. But somebody's gotta pay to fix it.
And it'll get expensive to defend all the lawsuits and insurance claims.

@Wipqozn I looked for a news article about this but didn't find one. Are they saying they don't need the NDP or something?
@Unionhawk I saw three Enterprise rental trucks get ripped apart in one 15 crash video alone.

@puzzlepiece87 It means they'll be trying to get parties to vote with them on a case by case basis.

I mean good luck forming government I guess
let me know how that works out for you justin

Canada sure does love its minority governments

6:22 PM
@Wipqozn Ah yes, this approach will definitely be the one where a minority government lasts all 4 years.
Well said @Unionhawk

lmfao
Everyone was like "Ahhh u see I am relaying these tweets that I am definitely not writing on my phone inside the SCIF to my staff outside the SCIF which is why this is all in first person"
Rep: Alex Mooney: "LIVE, FROM THE SCIF"

Buttery males
(Since this is again about breaking classified information security rules)

1 hour later…
7:49 PM
@TimStone it should be noted that normally Capitol Police love zip tying people and dragging them out of congress
I wonder how this situation is different
weird

8:00 PM
It's been awhile so I'll say it instead of @GodEmperorDune - qwhite interesting heh
(But yes, plenty of women/disabled people/non-fash people who have been arrested by Capitol police have been white as well)

8:20 PM
Halifax councillor seeking ban on bull riding in municipal buildings cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/…
> A Halifax councillor is urging the municipality to ban the use of animals for entertainment at government-owned buildings and properties, after receiving complaints from residents about an annual bull riding event.
> Animal rights activists have argued the sport is cruel and unethical, saying uncomfortable straps and prods are used.

8:34 PM
> in municipal buildings
what?

@Yuuki Probably arenas and such.

@Frank Yes. I left that part out intentionally since I had the same confusion at first, and it's hilarious.

@Wipqozn I'm just imagining that bullring in Real Steel.
Rock'em sock'em bullfights.

9:09 PM
@TimStone I'm just reading up on this now, and this whole thing is fucking wild
@TimStone He's so obviously guilty. It's just wild.

@TimStone I generally don't have any need for detailed knowledge about US states, but isn't Colorado pretty much dead center in the US?

@MadScientist Exactly.

How did that get a standing ovation?

@MadScientist Unless Trump wants a border wall with New Mexico...

9:24 PM
WTF just doesn't seem to cut it anymore, I've no idea how to react to this

I like that one older guy who doesn't stand, and just looks kind of confused
"Colorado...what..."

I mean, that's like if Boris Johnson says he wants to move the EU border checks to Leeds

@MadScientist Is it?
Ugh, I need to check a map.
Huh. I always forget that Texas dips south quite a lot.
My mind just goes "New Mexico is west of Texas and Colorado is just north of that".

@MadScientist Yeah, I don't even know. I guess he confused it with Arizona or New Mexico
He had been talking about New Mexico I think so it's "just" his inability to keep a coherent thought

It's quite scary that the president of the US is essentially a raving lunatic that has a very tenuous grasp on reality at best.

9:44 PM
> Well they have to deal with the in—the—look, there is institutional segregation in this country. And from the time I got involved I started... dealing with that. Redlining, banks, making sure that we are in a position where—look, you talk about education. I proposed that what we take is those very poor schools, the Title 1 schools, triple the amount of money we spend from 15 to 45 billion a year, give every single teacher a raise so they equal, raise so getting out of the, the 60 thousand dollar level.

At least that's internally consistent.
Good lord, that's a low f--kin' bar to clear.
It's no "Wharton school of finance, the best nuclear" for sure.

10:13 PM
@TimStone wait, if this is something that has to be even debated then what the fuck is wrong with America?
like i don't want to imagine what will happen if Trump thinks he can get away with murder just because he's the president and he gets his way to confront the whistleblowers because then what's going to stop him taking out a gun and shooting them because they are "spies" and that's what do you do to spies "back in the day"
@TimStone ^ i think he thinks New Mexico = Mexico as well
and also that part of Texas
that or he's think about making all state borders as walls which is even more stupid because he hasn't even properly costed his original wall

10:37 PM
My local paper just reported on that container full of bodies
Sounds like human trafficking :(

11:11 PM
@GnomeSlice Shitty, but I suppose not surprising, sadly.

It's a bigger problem in Canada than the media lets on
@Wipqozn ooo. Huh. We don't even have digital datastrips up very many places yet. Seems like a big investment

11:27 PM
This is actually a really cool innovation. I expect this might make waves once they start rolling it out in more locations but Mississauga is where the grocery experience changes always get the test
