@MadScientist holy shit, 11,000 of them died fighting ISIS and we’re just abandoning them...the US government is cruel
Literally nobody in it supports leaving them except for Trump, yet he has apparently unilaterally ordered the army to

@Stormblessed actually some people do
> Members of President Trump's Cabinet including Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin appeared on the Sunday morning political talk shows to defend the president's decision to remove U.S. troops from northern Syria ahead of a Turkish military operation and the delay of sanctions against Ankara.

@Memor-X well they weren’t elected
They were appointed by Trump

@TimStone what would top this off is if Trump retweeted it himself

So I guess the PC are predicted to win now, and with the bloc likely to pull in more seats, we might be in for a horrifying 4 years
If fully expect them to undo everything good Trudeau did, and just roll the country back to when harper was in charge
I am not looking forward to Oct 21

:/
The last polls I saw were predicting a narrow Lib majority or Lib-NDP minority

If the cons get a minority, then Singh has said he'll form a coalition government with other parties
So basically liberals + NDP need enough seats to basically have a majority
@ToxicFrog This is literally just from today, I think
I personally hope we get a liberal minority with NDP having enough seats to always make it a majority, and then I hope the NDP use the chance to push through electoral reform
It was a huge part of their last campaign, but it hasn't been discussed much this time
But basically I hope NDP would tell the liberals "fuck you, do election reform or we're not helping you push everything through"
Ranked choice ballot would be fine and would completely kill the PC party dead. They literally only exist because of the vote split on the left. They'd still have seats, but they'd never have majority power.
Of course it'll hurt the liberals too, which is why the liberals didn't do it last time

2:23 AM
Yeah.
I should send my MP one more email before the election castigating him for not pushing on electoral reform.

@Wipqozn probably as long as there isn't a big enough PC+PPC majority
🙃

@Unionhawk this is worse than i thought. i thought that Syria and/or Russia was going to take the US's place (there was talk that Russia might be only thinking about doing it to get access to Kurdish controlled oil fields)
> I don't think our soldiers should be there for the next 50 years guarding a border between Turkey and Syria when we can't guard our own borders at home. I don't think so.
old video but i just finished watching it. fuck some governments are pricks and fuck grinder for still taking your location and hiding behind their ToS

1 hour later…
4:36 AM
@Unionhawk shit
Really?
This is so sad
But predictable
We left an ally to either get murdered or surrender to literally the worst dictator on the planet
Basically one man decided to let hundreds die
@Unionhawk fuck this is literally happening right this second
The government is deploying troops at the Turkish border
59 civilians killed in Kurdish area since Wednesday

6:58 AM
@Unionhawk huh, why doesn't something like that have a build-in USP =/ ... Also aren't they generally just like, a thank of oxygen with a teeennnyyyy tiny valve
Maybe this is some different way of giving oxygen

BBC News - Catalonia leaders jailed for sedition by Spanish court
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-49974289
@Unionhawk I'm more worried about the bloc than the PPC.

@Wipqozn again? or is this a continuation from when they sought to get independence?

@Memor-X I believe it's the latter

> New Democrats looking at the polls are probably feeling pretty thankful today.

> That's because the NDP is having a bit of a moment. Both the Liberals and Conservatives appear to be losing steam, while the New Democrats have momentum heading into the election campaign's crucial final week.
> The CBC's Poll Tracker, an aggregation of all publicly available polling data, puts both the Conservatives and the Liberals under 33 per cent support countrywide and locked in the same close race that has prevailed throughout the campaign.

> It is looking increasingly unlikely that either party will be able to win enough seats to form a majority government.

> The New Democrats have jumped to 16.5 per cent support as of the Oct. 13 update of the Poll Tracker, representing a gain of two percentage points since Oct. 7 and the English-language debate (which, according to several polls, Sing
> It now means the NDP — while still on track to lose nearly all of its seats in Quebec — could actually gain seats in the rest of the country, largely at the expense of the Liberals.
I love that our FPTP system means this is such a mixed blessing
I mean also that some of the parties are just objectively terrible

11:52 AM
lol "Phase-1" of the trade deal is so Not a Thing they might need more negotiation meetings

I'm about halfway through it. Netflix didn't have as much to do with it as I thought.
> None of that growth was inevitable. Early video retailers weren’t even sure if their industry was legal. Legislators or the Supreme Court could have killed the industry with a few scratches of the pen, but they didn’t. Video rental was also helped along immensely by the pricing of video tapes, which could run up to $100. That pricing scheme was set up so studios could reap profit from rental indirectly. But the system also created an economic buffer around video rental.
$100 is bonkers.
Capitli$m bababbbyyy
in regards to DVDs:
> “The economics of the business completely changed,” Payne said. Studios were “mining their back catalogue and selling millions of these things to Walmart and Target and everybody for like $3 or $4. And they would retail them for $5. Well, [customers] would go in a Blockbuster to rent it, and they’d want to rent it to them for $4.50.”
And also just general exective incompetence:
> Executives in Antioco’s time may well have underestimated the threat. After all, when Hastings and other executives from Netflix proposed in 2000 that they run Blockbuster’s online business, executives from the video store reportedly laughed at Hastings’ team. Porterfield said it was easy, given the simplicity and counterintuitiveness of Netflix’s model at the time, to “scoff it off.”

> “So you're telling me that a through-the-mail system — the U.S. Postal Service — is going to eclipse my business? That’s really hard to stomach,” Porterfield said, describing how many in the company thoug
Also whales it seems:
> Jordan surmised at the time that a relatively small subset of heavy users accounted for an outsized chunk of Blockbuster’s profit. (A reality familiar to most retailers.)

> “Those customers were obviously willing to migrate over to streaming much quicker than everybody else,” he said. “And if that small number of customers was really important to the profitability, I think that probably accelerated the decline, more so than what people would have expected.”
And huge debt

> All of the company’s attempts to save itself were technological, or product-related, or doomed acquisition attempts. Initiatives flowed out from centralized franchise and corporate authorities. Like a lot of chain retailers, corporate tried to script conversations with customers. If they knew we were playing music at night or heard some of our more freewheeling conversations with customers, our corporate supervisors probably would have had paroxysms.
This last part really reminds me of Gamestop. So many people hate Gamestop because they push pre-orders and warranties so hard, aka employees following some annoying script.
I remember waaaay back when I got most of my games from EB Games, before gamestop bought them and forced their shittiness on them. I was on a first name basis with the staff, and I actually have the manager of the EB games I went to on Steam still.
Heck, yeeeaaarrrss ago, as in, 10 years ago, I strolled into a different EB games and the assistance manager from "my store" was working as the manager at antoher one. It was all "oh hey bryan!". Nice and friendly.
I basically never go now. Maybe once a year. But my word, it's so robotic and annoying.
It basically lost all it's heart and soul, because CAPITLIISMMMM
> It replaces the video store with something social, rather than purely technological. The problem is: social dynamics and genuine human connections are hard to measure and harder, if not impossible, to control. Relationships get passing lip service in the industry, but I have never heard a retail CEO trumpet the value of idle banter between store-level employees and customers in an earnings call.
And yeah I relate to that. I know when I was back at sobeys, a couple customers actually straight up told me they kept shopping their because of me. Because I was just always so cheerful, so it brightened their days.

12:48 PM
They slam a door in her face and it's part of the process

He has an article on toys'r'us too, which I'll also need to read.
US toys'r'us I assume, since the Canadian one is still alive and kicking
@TimStone I'm assuming it's supposed to represent the idea that the Queen needs to request permission to enter parliament?
Which makes sense, but it sure does look weird lol

Yeah lol

I wonder if The Holder of the Black Rod ever forgot to stop walking and actually slammed into the door.

1:04 PM
I love all the replies claiming that any amount of ceremony is the cause of everything wrong in the world

1:16 PM
@Ronan I love the people talking about how it's "stupid and pointless". Okay yes, it's pointless, that's why it's called ceremony? lol
Like instead of bitching on twitter learning some fucking history, my word lol. Yeah it's weird and funny, but there's a history behind why this is a thing, which makes perfect sense.

1:54 PM
🤔

@Wipqozn "a relatively small subset of heavy users accounted for an outsized chunk of Blockbuster’s profit" hmmmm, where have i heard this before *looks at EA*
@TimStone oh it's fine, they've done this before. look, you can see where they've banged on the door all those other times. give it a few more years and she'll bash a hole through the door and get that rod stuck

2:32 PM
@Memor-X I don't really think anyone would sob if EA went the way of blockbuster because they can't profit off addicts and young children anymore

user15026
@GnomeSlice booo for them fining her but yay for her doing the good

4:39 PM
@Ash Wrist slap would be a reason to impeach but not remove
@Yuuki "Give me the keys, Rose!"
@TimStone also on ^^ why impeach but not remove

@puzzlepiece87 Oh, I found the movie that that reminded me of.
Self/less is a 2015 American science fiction action thriller film directed by Tarsem Singh, produced by Ram Bergman and James D. Stern and written by Alex and David Pastor. The film tells the story of a business tycoon and billionaire named Damian Hale, who is diagnosed with a terminal illness. However, he manages to save his life with the aid of Professor Albright, who transfers Hale's consciousness into a new, younger body. The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Natalie Martinez, Matthew Goode, Victor Garber, Derek Luke, and Ben Kingsley. Self/less was originally set to release on February 27, 2015, but...

@GnomeSlice So she's being fined for something she's received multiple awards for doing? Man, some judge wasn't paying attention
Gah
So I have a plugin that darkmodes all websites, but I have it exclude chat.stackexchange.com since PorkChat does that
But Porkchat doesn't affect the transcript, but since it's still part of chat.stackexchange.com it's not darkmoded by the plugin -.-

5:45 PM
> Trump makes 'insane' suggestion Kurds are deliberately freeing Isis prisoners, after hundreds escape during Turkey bombing
US president suggests former allies he abandoned are trying to ‘get us involved’
aaaaaaa

I like the framing as if that were indeed true somehow it would excuse the fact that uhh yeah obviously that was a possibility?

6:04 PM
@TimStone I understood your entire Kavanaugh joke and yes I am Quite Online why do you ask

2 hours later…
Yoooo…they didn't come to play. I thought it would be a raptor officer and was going to make a Jurassic Park joke but it doesn't look like it

I mean absolutely stop Erdogan from doing genocide but the President straight up told him he could do what he wanted
How is anyone supposed to reconcile that?

10:04 PM
@Yuuki You don't say, considering Tencent owns Riot.

> Jagmeet Singh’s favourability has increased 20 points, from 39 per cent to 59 per cent since the campaign began. Meanwhile, CPC leader Andrew Scheer is down six points in that period to 38 per cent, and Justin Trudeau is unchanged at 35 per cent.

@Yuuki Thanks for posting this - I hadn't heard of the movie but it sounds interesting.
