12:00 AM
Sooo it turns out those pentesters were probably arrested because the county sheriff is a jackass who has it out for the state and is pulling a "I'm the law here" move

12:16 AM
@TimStone yeah., Singh responded to it here: cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-brownface-arabian-nights-1.5289165
Trudeu is supposed to address it tonight, I think
Oh he's responding now
> I did something I shouldn't have done, and I'm disappointed and pissed off at myself
Exact quote. Pretty much what I expected him to say.
I'm just catching the end of it.
they just asked him if he considered it racist, and he said "yes. I didn't think of it racist at the time, but I was wrong."
He sure did dodge that question about "Have there been any more offensive costumes"

@TimStone probably a closed question tbh
@TimStone Trudeau: "I've always — and you'll know this — been more enthusiastic about costumes than is sometimes appropriate."
Fucking WHAT

12:39 AM
I just saw that my dude what
C'mon now
That was like "Well let me give a half hearted response here and then veeeeeeer off into the weeds"
@Unionhawk I will only be accepting this as a follow-up no further questions please

I really hope they hurry up and figure out how to bring Jack Layton back from the dead.

I hope they bring back Professor Layton

Or failing that sir John a MacDonald, so we can get some drunken debates.

Canada is now a puzzle game, I don't make the rules

> One of the most famous stories has a visibly inebriated Macdonald take the stage during an election debate, likely during a January 1864 by-election. He shocked the audience by vomiting on stage mid-debate.

> "Is this the man you want running your country?” asked his opponent. “A drunk?”

> " I get sick (…) not because of drink [but because] I am forced to listen to the ranting of my honourable opponent,” Macdonald retorted, according to the story.
Election debates sure were more interesting back in the day

> He also occasionally got violent: the Daily British Whig newspaper reported him slapping his opponent’s face at a campaign event in 1872.
@TimStone I'd be fine with this. Maybe he'll make it illegal to not wear a top hat.

4 hours later…
5:03 AM
considering he's never had a consistent costing for the wall and his lack of understanding how tariffs work this isn't surprising
however bet you his base would love the idea of imposing tariffs on Mexico to make them pay for the wall

@Stormblessed i think i only know No Mas = No More

@Memor-X Approximate translation is “no more false asylum”, “no more {two unfamiliar verbs}” and “more racism”
hits cymbal

@Stormblessed is that last bit accurate?

@Memor-X basically (but not actually)
Oh I think I figured it out
It’s “no more false asylum, no more catch and release, no more illegal entry into the US.” I’m Stormblessed, and I very much do not approve this message.
This new campaign he’s just started seems to think that just saying all the same stuff plus “oh I love Mexicans, I never ever said many horrible things about them” is going to do anything
Remember Blexit and Jexodus?

2 hours later…
8:07 AM
@Memor-X Thing is, most extra money you gain from tariffs is counteracted by the fact that it means people need to spend more money on the things that have a tariff and can't spend as much on the things that have higher tax rates
Like, if people need to pay 6% more due to tariffs, that's 6% they can't spend on American cars

2 hours later…
@Wipqozn Nah, everyone knows Layton is a libertarian

2 hours later…
11:32 AM
This whole Trudeau brownface thing is such a joke
Who cares, it was 18 years ago
Scheer is saying it shows he's "unfit to govern" lol like are you kidding me
Classic Canadian politics.
And gee I wonder why this photo surfaces during the election campaign
I think there are more important issues on the table than what Trudeau wore at a Halloween party 18 years ago

@GnomeSlice sorta true. if he's grown up and no longer believes those things are a joke/grown out of being a racist then that's a good thing. however smear jobs like that on any person is generally to peg them to one moment and that it defines them for the rest of their life

And anyone trying to argue the guy is an actual racist is just kidding themselves
I think Trudeau himself is a bit of a dope but I'm probably still voting liberal and this is just dumb

12:46 PM
> Intention of @POTUS is to have "cleaner, safer cars," @EPAAWheeler tells reporters. t.co/7kb0qiA1Vh
That makes literally zero sense
"Our intention is to have cleaner cars, by having less strict standards"
I mean that's because it's obviously a lie, but still.

The Free Market Will Do It
tm

True. I should never questioned the power of the glorious free market. I'm sorry @Unionhawk. Please forgive me.

yep, because car manufactures can obviously be trusted to be honest *continues to disable emission cheaters*

no, see, the market will decide whether it is important for cars to be clean or not
that's why everything is decarbonizing
is because it's profitable to
lol
haha
we're so fucking dead
international climate strike september 20

The less-negative side is that it's unlikely to have any short term impact

12:59 PM
true
you gotta figure the 2020 and probably 2021 model years are pretty much fully developed

A lot of the companies signed on with California's plan already and they're not going to bet the farm on whether a Trump plan will survive the courts

right

So it'd have to be decided definitively down the road at some point to matter
And we'll likely have been killed for some even more dumb reason by then anyway

I mean I'm sure justices lawyer brain 1-9 will come to a good conclusion here

I mean at best they can decide the administration can do what it wants but then the next administration could just do it differently so a lot of factors where the safer bet is to make more efficient cars so people don't get too excited about the real solution of just largely not having any

1:39 PM

@GnomeSlice Ed's not wrong. Unfortunately, many of Scheer's supporters will be like "We may be homophobic, but at least we're not (openly) racist."

Scheer is a shit

2:34 PM
@Unionhawk lol the third instance in under 24 hours, amazing
Also he was being asked a question about Ben Carson with regard to the homeless so 🤷‍♂️

Mike Pence has hired checks notes the woman dating Stephen Miller ?? as his press secretary
let_them_fight.gif

@GnomeSlice Oh yeah, The Cons trying to take the "higher ground" on this is just nonsense.

@TimStone The Trump administration isn't your average cronyism. This is advanced cronyism.

I was thinking of that yesterday, actually. Well not that specific example. But contrast Trudeaus response to this compared to things like Scheer or Trump (i.e. It's just locker room talk).

2:43 PM
I know I'm just surprised that anyone is dating Stephen Miller

2:55 PM
@Wipqozn Oh, there's video now?

Video of a third, separate incident, apparently
Kind of giving context to that "costume enthusiasm" remark, heh

Maybe this brings out some sympathy votes for Singh and the NDP

I expect the main impact of this to be swinging some folks over to NDP and Greens.
I doubt anyone legit concerned with racism will switch from the Liberals to the PC
I will say all this does make me all the more upset at Trudeau for killing election reform :)

Of course, thanks to our fucked up electoral system -- which I owe Trudeau and my MP more angry letters about -- pulling voters from the Liberals to the NDP and Greens is functionally equivalent to adding Conservative votes in most ridings

@Wipqozn If anything, it would swing the other way (except for, you know, the whole sincere apologizing)

3:05 PM
Unless the Liberals implode completely

I sure do wish we used a non-stupid voting system, at least ranked ballot, so I could just vote NDP or Green followed by Liberals as my "well fuck at least it's not scheer" backup :)

@Wipqozn yeah, same
I am still furious at the Liberals

@ToxicFrog Same. My anger slowed down for a while, but all this election has done is made me more furious.

I'm also starting to see signs for the "Christian Heritage Party of Canada" pop up around my riding, which makes my skin crawl.

Fuck FPTP

3:06 PM
Yeah.

@Wipqozn tbh, at this point, he's possibly upset with himself

I'm going to yell at my MP some more which won't fix anything but is at least cathartic

unless I'm misreading the Liberal Party's preferred second place as being Green/NDP etc
which is possible
instant runoff ballots aren't even hard to count!
you take first choice votes, see if there's a majority, if there isn't, eliminate last place and transfer those ballots to the next choice, and repeat until somebody has a majority

IRV has some super weird edge cases where a party getting more votes can make them less likely to win

@Unionhawk I think his official objection to it is that it's confusing for the voters

3:10 PM
But it's far from the only way of implementing ranked voting
And there's also approval voting

Approval is pretty good too, just don't do a borda count lmao

Which is just "tick the box next to everyone you'd be ok with winning, don't try to rank them"
@Wipqozn his official objection is dogshit~

literally the worst of all possible worlds

yeah that's why I used italics :P
He intentionally sabotaged it. IT was a fucking shitshow.

parliament by sortition, prime minister by thunderdome
imo

3:13 PM
I'm not a fan of approval voting for an election

I tend to agree

SE, wtf are you doing. I can't send this message. There must be some hidden character it's choking on.

It feels like it would favor tacking towards the center

Anyways, was going to say I like MMP, but MBraedley has pointed out that does result in just the big provinces being the only ones that matter.
haha wtf. It was choking on me trying to ping MBraedley

It does do that, which is perhaps a bit of a benefit, but it's pure compromise

3:15 PM
Yeah I literally can't send a ping to you

like, do I check ndp green liberal, or do I leave liberal off because they'll get a lot of votes and I don't actually like them,

Had the same problem. Still do

It's a legit concern

Yeah pings appear to be broken

3:16 PM
More than pings

I voted libertarian last year lol
I don't want to vote for want of these people

e Yes I heard about that, but that headline is trash
> UFOs Are Real — and You Were Never Supposed to See Them, Military Official Says
Of course they're real. People always seem to forget what UFO actually means.

Any*

3:42 PM
Oh okay, I finally figured out why Trump thinks canning the California emissions standards makes cars safer. He thinks to make them efficient they're as light as possible, and that a heavier car is safer because it has more material

That's not, typically how strength of materials works
or at least not all of it

Right, which, par for the course here. But I was confused what he was even getting at, so Now We Know™

they should make cars with solid steel hoods again because folks
the stuff we use now?
it just folds right up!
really bad
(editor's note: the design change I am referring to was made to prevent the hood from fucking decapitating people)

That is actually basically where he went, lol

@TimStone Heavier cars mean the same force causes lower acceleration, and it's the acceleration that kills. But forces applied to a car in an accident usually isn't independent of the mass of the car.

3:45 PM
"They make them now like paper mache, somebody touches 'em and the entire car collapses"

@Unionhawk this is the correct response

lighter cars are cooler anyway

He seems to also believe that the change will result in a cost savings on vehicles that will suddenly make everyone who owns a 20+ year old car go buy a new one that's much more relatively efficient

@MBraedley Can we make the car heavier only after it crashes?

3:47 PM
Which again, based on absolutely nothing, par for the course
@Ronan That's only for the autonomous cars after they scoop up pedestrians

@Ronan Well, find me some gravitonium or element zero and I'll get right on that.

What if after the crash the car katamaris up other nearby cars?

@Ronan but mass is conserved in that instance

4:01 PM
@TimStone All that collision energy has to go somewhere and if it's not going to crumple the car, it's going to crumple you.
DISCLAIMER: I am not a physicist.

That's pretty much how it works, yes.
There's some great videos of collision tests between old and new cars, and usually what happens is, the new car, and the test dummy inside the old car, are both destroyed

I mean, you have to figure that a car that's rigid on the outside is typically rigid on the inside.
So if things break when they collide against it from the outside, you're going to break when you collide against it from the inside.

4:27 PM
@Wipqozn exactly lol

@Unionhawk test
Okay it's fixed now

5:00 PM
Colt Firearms is ending production of the AR-15 (because they've been priced out of the market by the abundance of similar, cheaper guns)

I couldn't even chat earlier, it just said unknown error
@TimStone why isn't it called the CR-15 then?
I didn't know colt made that. Also that gun is stupid
Sorry for pings mobile editing

ArmaLite licensed the plans to Colt at some point in the past and then went out of business for a while if I remember

5:18 PM
@Unionhawk Principles are good, but not being able to see the value in being able to model accurately and make informed decisions is a deficit for sure.

user15026
@ToxicFrog yeeeeah, that's a thing. :/

5:35 PM
@Ash They've been around for a while, but have never received a large vote share, let alone a seat in parliament.

user15026
5:48 PM
@MBraedley I know, there's a woman in my parents' area who has been running for that party pretty much my entire life.

I can't remember if they were on the ballot in my former riding last federal election. I haven't seen any signs up this time around, but there's also a municipal by-election going on with something like 10 candidates crowding out the federal election signs.

user15026
6:15 PM
Right now in my riding there are a LOT of Green signs and a lot of Conservative ones and a handful of Liberal ones. The Conservative guy's signs say "re-elect" even though he's not the incumbent or whatever, because apparently he's "reusing old signs to save on cost" but it's still weird.

o.O
Was he in office a few elections ago or something?

user15026
He was, yes

user15026
Apparently it's not against the rules: cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener-waterloo/…

user15026
(also oh hey apparently we have someone running from the "Animal Protection Party of Canada"...whatever that is)

@Ash They try to keep people from savaging the Conservatives too hard on Twitter /s

user15026
6:26 PM
snortgiggles

6:50 PM
The current belief in the media seems to be that the whistleblower is referencing a call in which the President reportedly told the new Ukrainian President Zelensky that if he wanted relations with the US to improve he should reopen the Biden investigation

7:09 PM
(supposedly, there's some concern in the article)

7:33 PM
@Ash interesting. In the provincials in my area we had the liberal candidate (who was re-assigned to our district after some map redrawing) cut out the "re-elect" part of her old signs, leaving holes, and the NDP signs still had "re-elect" even though he hadn't been elected the past couple times.
Although I'm saddened that the liberals in our area didn't get creative with the signs when changing from provincial to federal... They could have just stapled "Kevin" over the "Cindy", as they are both Lamoureux.

1 hour later…
8:53 PM
@Unionhawk but there’s the silly quota thing, which in edge cases can mess up things
@GnomeSlice I still am quite disappointed in him, and I think someone should replace him. It’s not quite Ralph Northam with the KKK costume, but this was way too recent
but he’s a good guy, and many Republicans (and many Democrats) could get away with this and worse in the US, with about zero repercussions
Northam and his Lt. Gov. both still have their jobs...

1 hour later…
10:03 PM
lol Marianne Williamson once "ah how interesting"ed at a 9/11 truther, good stuff

10:59 PM
Also lol Rod Rosenstein really hated those leakers except I guess when he wanted to be one
