I agree with the sentiment, but they do claim to lose $215M to fare evasion annually. Plus they used money they took from other people via asset forfeiture which is bad for different reasons but not in regard to breaking even tbf

@TimStone That does seem a realistic number. A ticket costs about 3 USD, and they have roughly 1.8B transits per year. So if 5% of people doesn't pay, that indeed means 215M lost

@Unionhawk And if New York City is going to do a wealth tax or a big company tax or whatever, a LOT of those companies are likely to go elsewhere. You don't get rich and/or successful by putting up with high taxes

you're right I'm sure these companies would simply pick up their skyscrapers and move away from the financial capital of the world

let's criminalize the poor instead better things aren't possible

if I were the governor of a state I would simply set the corporate tax to 0 to convince huge companies to move away from new york city because tax rate is the only thing to consider when deciding to move hq and not population transportation infrastructure etc

at some point people have got to stop saying "it can't be done" or "this won't work because of this" and start saying "well this is the problem with this idea, but when we do this, the problem is a little bit smaller...let's try it"

I don't know if anyone here has heard of The Venus Project but that is the single biggest problem with it: no one is willing to try it, which means any problems it has can't be worked out. The critics say "there is a loss of individualism" or "the citizens have too little voice in society" but they never offer a way to fix the problem and never get behind the idea of trying it to see if the problems they point out are actual problems...

...and if they are, how they can be fixed.

I'll give a tl;dr:

Syrian migrants in istanbul are being forced to return back to syria

many of them have families and jobs here

they will separate these families.

We may see concentration camps here in a short while.

Sadly I don't think that any group of people will organize against them. Many people, on both left and right, in lgbt circles, in progressive groups etc... sadly do hate syrians.

I will use my legal rights and speak up, but I don't think that anything will change. This is not okay.

To compare, I have a single room apt in istanbul and pay 1100 TRY/mo (plus hefty fees) for it, and my mom has a mid-sized house in Ankara and pays 1000 TRY/mo (plus fees) for it.
